This was actually Jackson's debut single, in 1972. He had so many great songs in the 70s, and you've done three of them. Next, you could do "Rock Me On the Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", or "The Pretender". Or you could venture into his 80s catalogue, with bangers like "Boulevard", "Somebody's Baby", "Lawyers in Love", or "Tender is the Night". You really can't go wrong with JB. P.S. Can't believe this song is FIFTY YEARS OLD! P.P.S. Your two-year anniversary will be on March 31, 2023. I'll be there...
Lawyers in Love. Yes. Yes. He wrote it after his divorce. Great commentary on the 80s. Is it “That Girl Could Sing”. Great song too. Those are two of his more edgy songs.
You haven't heard Jackson Brown's "Stay" until you've heard it together with its long prelude, "The Load Out". The two go together to make one song, a valentine to his road crew, his band, and his fans.
Oh, I haven't seen their reaction to "Stay." I was hoping it was "The Loadout/Stay", but you're saying it's not? Bummer. I agree, "The Loadout" is the indispensable prelude. They need to do it again, with both songs.
@@toddstevens13 Absolutely! It's like the difference between studio and live versions of "Sultans Of Swing'' from Alchemy, or "Take It Easy" from a late 1970's Eagles concert. It's almost like the difference between seeing a picture of bread and enjoying it fresh from the oven.
@@Dusty999 I'm with you on everything except the Live version of Sultans Of Swing. I can't follow you there, but we still agree on the other things, and that's saying something👍😊.
The Pretender is another Jackson Brown classic with lesson in it. We used to do this in my band all the time. Jackson Browne co-wrote the Eagles hit "Take It Easy."
Bowne's version of "Take It Easy" is on the same album as "Doctor My Eyes," and it seamlessly blends into the next song on the album, "Our Lady of the Well." I highly recommend both songs.
Co-wrote is being a bit generous to Glenn Frey - Browne essentially had it mostly written but hadn't yet finished it, and after Frey's continual bugging, Browne gave him the ok to do so. Frey did a great job on it, but needed Brown's shoulders to stand on.
Jackson Browne tells the story of how Jesse Ed Davis wound up on this record, in a great documentary called Rumble. They actually brought Davis in to play on a different song but when they ran the playback for him he said, . "I don't hear myself playing on this song. What else have you got?" They were a little taken aback but pulled out Doctor My Eyes for him to listen to. He said, "I can play on this one" and then (as someone here already pointed out) he ripped through the solo that's on the record. Not a bad day's work!
Don Henley of the Eagles said (of the Eagles) "If it wasn't for Jackson no one would have ever heard of us." -- He had tons of hits you can add to you list.
I am 58 years old and this is one of my favorite songs that I have ever heard. I think of it as sometimes you stare into the Abyss, and the Abyss stares back...
Yes. It's like it's ok to make mistakes and screw up and such but one day you see the path your on and say to yourself "yeah, that's enough of that'. 'Ive been to the edge And there I stood and looked down You know I lost a lot of friends there baby I got no time to mess around' VanHalen.
Jackson was part of a group of artists who hung out & and helped out on each other’s albums back in the 70’s… that included the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt & Dan Fogelberg. On this great tune, David Crosby & Graham Nash sang backup. Can’t get any better than that!
Next stop: "The Pretender" or "Here Comes Those Tears Again". Jackson Brown is part of that SoCal sound of the '70s that gave us the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and a whole host of other acts. So great...so much a part of my young adulthood.
Prior to The Eagles, Glenn Frey moved to LA where he met Jackson Browne and JD Souther among others. Jackson got Frey and Souther an apartment in his building directly above his. Of course, musicians are usually out late and not morning people. They would try to sleep in, but at 9am, they would hear Jackson's tea kettle whistling . Then, they'd hear Jackson playing piano and singing. He'd play, the opening, first verse and chorus over and over, changing it up a little, adding a lyric until he got it just right. Then, silence until the tea kettle whistled again. Then he'd do the same with the second verse, revisit the first verse again and the chorus over and over and over. It drove Glenn and JD crazy, but they were young and although they wanted to be song writers, they didn't know how to go about it. They listened, begrudgingly, to Jackson Browne write Doctor My Eyes, through the floor. Frey said "so that's how you do it, elbow grease, time, though, persistence".
An amazing song by Jackson! Excellent bass work by Leland Sklar. I saw Jackson and James Taylor in concert last year and they both still sound amazing.
Running on empty is my favorite of his songs. I LOVED riding down the road and that song coming on. It's one of those you have to turn up loud when you're listening to it. ❤️❤️❤️🎵🎶🎼
Always, always pay attention to the lyrics of Jackson Browne (amidst all that great musicality!). Simple words that have profound emotion and meaning. "Late for the Sky" and "The Pretender" will devastate you…
Finally! Someone else mentions my JB favorite forever: " Late for the Sky "..the entire album of the same name is quintessential Jackson Browne. I still have my original vinyl copy from when it first came out, and I still like to listen to it with all the snaps and pops 😁
This is my standard for Jackson. Great story. The late Glenn Fry said he learned to write music living underneath Jackson Brown in Lauren Canyon. He hear Jackson play a few notes on his piano then waits, for his tea to steep. Then after tea he’d hear his boots on the floor above, then Jackson would go back the the piano for the next part - over and over
The best way to really understand where Jackson Browne is coming from in a lot of his writing, listen to These Days. He wrote it when he was just 16, but it could easily have written by a much older, more seasoned man because of how well it makes you feel the depth of emotion in the song. Once you've really listened to These Days a few times, all of his work will start to make more sense when you consider the man who created it.
Nobody has mentioned "That Girl Could Sing"!!! But they have mentioned that listening to "Stay" without including "Load Out" is like taking a shower wearing a raincoat!
Amber, i love your words "don't let the world take the you out of you", something that I sometimes forget. You're a beautiful person, inside and out, with a heart of gold. Merry Christmas to you and Jay, and to your 3 beautiful kids as well. Peace to you all. ✨ 🎄
Oh yes, it seems each Jackson Browne fan has their own favorite tracks… because he touched us on very personal levels and affected us deeply. My favorites are “Before the Deluge”, “These Days” and “Fountain of Sorrow”. Each of these are on surface level ‘sad songs’ but they contain great truths and depth of feeling that you’ll rarely find. These are the songs that can carry you through tough times with grace and dignity. BTW, Doctor My Eyes is also a top personal favorite. Jackson is one of the best!
Agree. Everything from Late For The Sky could be described as a sad song, but also along with the truths and feeling there is a sort of steely optimism. He wrote most of these in the time following his wife's suicide. For A Dancer is my favorite from that one.
God, I love Jackson Browne. So cool and laid back. Knew all the other cool, laid back musicians in the 70s. There are lots of stories about Jackson Browne doing interesting things with other musicians. After meeting SRV, Jackson offered his recording studio to Stevie and Double Trouble to record their first album so they took him up on it.

"Tender is the Night" is a great Jackson Browne song. I also would recommend for a more comic take his song "Lawyers in Love". In addition, I really enjoy his take on the song "Downtown". "The Pretender" a great song too. In fact, I'll just say at this point for more great Jackson Browne songs see the comments from others below or this would be a mile long comment and just duplicating everything everyone else is listing. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
“The Pretender”, which is my second all time favorite song, after “American Pie”, is a lyrical masterpiece!!! I hope that’s the next one by Jackson Browne, that you react to.
Jessie Ed Davis was the one who did the lead on this song. He was an Indian blues player who toured with Taj Mahal and others whose career was shortened by drugs, but supposedly created this lead in about 15 minutes after listening to it on the phone. Also, in the documentary, MUSCLE SHOALS, according to Greg Allman, his brother Duane Allman learned the slide after listening to Jessie Ed Davis on a record.
Yeah, they actually reacted to the movie Fast Times on their movie channel, so they definitely heard that song, although they may not have known who it was at the time.
Doctor My Eyes is one of my all time favorites !!! BTW - The Eagles had a hit with the song "Take it Easy" . It was Jackson Browne that began to write it then got stuck. Glenn Fry took it and started writing more with the lyrics "It's a girl my lord in a flat bed Ford" - When Glenn was starting out he live in an apartment either above or below Jackson. (Can't remember which) Glenn said that he learned how to work on creating a song because. he could hear the way Jackson did it.
Here is another artist that was in Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz. An awesome documentary/movie about The Band. This group back in the 60s and 70s played with the who's who of rock, blues and folk music. This is a must see for anyone who wants to know about our American history of music.
Jackson Brown had other hits and was a great lyricist and singer. However, imo this song stands out as exceptional, and not just among his own body of work. Listen to it again, and keep listening to it. It's deep, truthful, and just a magnificently executed piece of music. It's a special song, an all-time great in my estimation. Thank you for your reaction. Keep it rolling you two.
This was just perfect! A good friend of mine passed away a few years ago, she was a Christmas birthday and her two favorites off all time were Jackson Brown and Bonnie Raitt. Thanks for channeling her for me today 💜
When Jackson was starting out with fellow musicians in CA. he helped them come up with a group called Eagles. And yeah, his 80's tune "Somebody's Baby" for the movie Fast Times is another side of him.
Thank you and Merry Christmas. I’ve been waiting for this one. ❤. Please revisit “Stay” but with the first cut with “Load Out”. Beautiful tribute to all roadies. Also try “Lawyers in Love” 😊
Damn, great interpretation, for all its uplifting beat and rhythm I can definitely see what the lyrics are talking about, "Doctor, my eyes...was I unwise, to keep them open for so long." Sometimes when you realize the complexities of world it makes you feel like you lose yourself and you don't know which way is up and which is down...and then the, "Is that the prize, for learning not to cry?" just the numbness of blocking the emotions out when the pain becomes too much...such a deep song yet such a poppy catchy beat...
"For a dancer", "Barricades of Heaven", "I'm Alive", "Sky Blue and Black",. I could go on and on when it comes to Jackson Browne. I saw him live around ten years ago. Just him, a piano, and several different guitars. He was wonderful!
Jackson Browne's Running On Empty album is one of my all time favorite album. You can listen to any song off it and not be disappointed! My favorite is Nothing But Time, which was recorded on their Silvereagle tour bus. In the middle of the song you can actually hear the bus changing gears in the background.
Sooo many GREAT songs, two others that are in my playlists that pop into my head are "The Deluge" and "For America". I learned as a young teen how evil the world truly is. I quickly learned that tears solved nothing. Now in my 50's I sometimes wish I could just let the tears roll on out once in awhile. Also, learning what I learned has led to me being able to not feel sorry for myself and the disease that ever so slowly killing me. All of my nurses and doctors wonder how I always keep a smile on my face knowing my own immune system is stripping and killing my nervous system. Having seen just how awful life is and can be I am grateful that this disease is inexorably slow moving, though very painful from time-to-time. Enough about me, to EVERYONE out there, FROHE WEINACHTEN!!! (Merry Christmas)
As always, the comments from both of you are so astonishingly insightful for two kids that young (at age 69, I'm allowed to say that), and complement each other wonderfully. The songs you pick so often take me back on memory lane, thanks a lot for that! Keep it up, and greetings from the Black Forest!
Message is wonderful! You guys are so insightful anymore!! I mean way more than most people FEEL! Awww give the kids lots of hugs from your online family ❤❤❤❤❤
🥰🥰🥰 I love Jackson Browne! Try the video of "You're A Friend Of Mine" with Clarence Clemons (from Springsteen's back up band, The E-Street Band). And "The Pretender" and "Tender Is The Night" are great songs too.
"Never let the world take the you outta you" very wise words ! Will spread that message . Thank you both for what you do and allowing us on this journey with you wonderful souls !
In my opinion one of the greatest songs ever. You couldn't change a word or note and make it scan better. Rhymes are effortless and every word fits the line perfectly.
Amber, the soft way is the eternal way. It's the way of longevity and it's the way of peace. Hard=tough but can also be shattered. " Be like water" - Bruce Lee.
Kinda fun… a few years ago me and my mom were at Woodstock and eating at a picnic table and we heard music. A lady said “he must be practicing for his show tonight!” I looked on the website and Jackson Browne was having a concert there. We heard him singing this, having a picnic at the original Woodstock site!!
This is the music of my youth! Love Jackson Browne! Great song, beautiful arrangement! This is a perfect example of what my guitar teacher tried to tell me about not needing to fill up every speck of space with notes. The space between the notes is just as important. Great guitar solo with terrific expression and emotion that mirrors the lyrics. You should really do the Load Out/Stay combo again because Stay by itself isn't the whole experience. Merry Christmas!!!
This is one of my all time favorite songs, pure poetry. You really need to react to "Stay" again, but this time with "The Load Out/Stay" it is so much better together.
His mid-80s duet with Springsteen's saxophonist Clarence Clemmons will add energetic happiness to your day. It's called "Friend Of Mine"! "Somebody's Baby" is one of my very favorites of his.
Such a great singer :) His duet with Clarence Clemons ("You're a Friend of Mine") is one of my favorites, and "Lawyers in Love" was fun. Very 80s :) He just has oodles of really good songs :)
"In the Shape of a Heart", "Lives in the Balance" and "Lawless Avenues". All from The album "Lives in the Balance" are amazing. That may be my favorite album he has released.
Good reaction thanks! My girl loved this song in 1972, and because of that I learned to love it too. Jackson Brown is up there with the top singer song writers. Just because a song is pleasing, doesn't mean its "Blue Eyes Soul." Blue Eyes Soul are creative compositions. Tina Marie, The Soul Surviver's, Redbone, AWB, are just a few. Happy Holidays and New Years to Rob Squad.
My mom and I attended a Kenny Rogers concert (she was a huge Kenny fan) back in the late 70's. Jackson Browne was the openning act. Both were amazing! I can see images of them on stage, as I watch this reaction and hear these songs again. Thanks for the memory! You made me 😊
I've been a fan since this debut album came out. Seen him in concert 17 times. The empathy and compassion Jackson has for this world and the people who live on it never fails. Love your reaction! Merry Christmas to you! PS - try "'Til I Go Down" or "Black And White" next.
Jay you can thank Jackson Browne and David Bowie for the big discovery of SRV. He used Jackson's recording studio at no cost. This is his very best song. Merry Christmas.👍
Jackson Browne is truly awesome! A talented musician, songwriter, and singer. Saw him in concert a few years back ~ it was amazing! So glad you enjoyed this tune ~ Love u guys! 💕
You can't go wrong with any of JB's music. Give 'Fountain Of Sorrow' a listen. Great story-teller song. Beautiful composition. Love you guys! Merry Christmas to you and your beatiful family!🎅🎄🎉
You mention loving Stay. First of all, you should know that it is a cover, not an original Jackson Browne song. Second, it was performed as the coda to a great Jackson Browne original song titled The Load-Out. It was performed live at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland for inclusion in Browne's album Running on Empty. The Load-Out is a tribute to the roadies, who keep the tour moving, and something of a lament about the rigors of touring. But it also celebrates the fans, the audience that gives the band a purpose, and it ends on an upbeat note when it segues into Stay, asking the audience to hang with them “just a little bit longer. You should really react to The Losd-Out and Stay together. They are the final tracks on the Running on Empty album.

For a Dancer is a must listen to. Maybe not at the holidays but soon. And These Days.
Love this!!! All JB is great!! But LOVE THE LOAD OUT/STAY COMBO!!! Oh, the LIVE version Pure fire!!
HE MADE SOME GREAT SONGS. LOVE HIS MUSIC. SMOOOOTH
Any song that can work the word "unfurled" in it's lyrics is an instant masterpiece, in my opinion.
Jackson's favorite song was "These Days" which he wrote when he was 16.
"That Girl Could Sing" is a great song from Jackson, you both will love it.
Late for the Sky is Jackson Browne's masterpiece album - lyrically one of the all-time greatest records ever made.
Late for the Sky is my favorite Jackson Browne song
Jackson Browne is also a very successful songwriter. Lots of artists have covered his songs.
Love this artist and songwriter!! So talented!🤘🔥
This was just perfect! A good friend of mine passed away a few years ago, she was a Christmas birthday and her two favorites off all time were Jackson Brown and Bonnie Raitt. Thanks for channeling her for me today 💜
I love his music and always will. His music brings back memories of when I was a young teenager!!!
When Jackson was starting out with fellow musicians in CA. he helped them come up with a group called Eagles. And yeah, his 80's tune "Somebody's Baby" for the movie Fast Times is another side of him.
Amber, I love your "embrace empathy" message.
He was very active with music all his life. He was 16 when he wrote this i think. He was with a few other bands and their songs hit top 40.
You two have a great Christmas and stay warm. Finding your channel this year has made me very happy and I look forward to 2023. 🎄🎵🎶
Love Jackson Browne. He was my 1st concert back in '78 and got to see him Jun of 2022 ..he still sounds great
My absolute favorite from him! I think David Crosby and Graham Nash from Crosby ,Stills & Nash are providing the harmony.
Thx! Fountain of sorrow and Rock me on the water! Blessings!
Thank you and Merry Christmas. I’ve been waiting for this one. ❤. Please revisit “Stay” but with the first cut with “Load Out”. Beautiful tribute to all roadies. Also try “Lawyers in Love” 😊
"Before The Deluge" or "Take It Easy"! Nice, Amber. These poets! Nice reaction. A great artist to enjoy Happy Christmas!!
FOUNTAIN OF SORROW, THE PRETENDER, TENDER IS THE NIGHT, IN THE SHAPE OF A HEART 😊 4 MORE GREAT ONES YOU GUYS! 😊
Jackson surrounded himself with the best session musicians who were dying to play with him. All in LA.
Jackson Browne's music was frequently called poetry set to music. Always a treat to hear his music.
Not heard this song in years! I loved this back in the day. Thank you for bringing this one back to my attention. ❤🎵
🥰🥰🥰 I love Jackson Browne! Try the video of "You're A Friend Of Mine" with Clarence Clemons (from Springsteen's back up band, The E-Street Band). And "The Pretender" and "Tender Is The Night" are great songs too.
It is amazing that he wrote this song when he was only 16 years old.
You were jamming so much to the sound I thought there's no way you're picking up on the meaning of the lyrics, but you nailed that, too.
Genius songwriter and phenomenal song in the top 10 of all the greatest songs!!!
Because of my age, this song by Jackson Browne just hits me the hardest.
"Rock Me on the Water" Gospel feel, lovely song
This song was released in March 1972. I was 13 and in 8th grade. Loved the song then, now at 64 I love it even more.
"Never let the world take the you outta you" very wise words ! Will spread that message . Thank you both for what you do and allowing us on this journey with you wonderful souls !
Shout out to Guitarist Jesse Ed Davis 💥🔥💥native American brother 👊🏾
This is my favorite Jackson Browne song!! Glad you did it.
Jessie Ed Davis played lead guitar, he is a Native American....From NORMAN!
The bass guitar in this is just spectacular
Minnie Riperton called him "The Poetry Man" for his lyrics and wrote the same titled song about him. Love everything Jackson Browne.
