Poirot's "Allergy"

- I found this scene from Agatha Christie's: Poirot to be quite hilarious, mostly due to the different meaning of certain words used. If you're British, you may not get the double meaning as much. Even without that, the scene itself is quite humorous because of Poirot and Chief Inspector Japp's funny relationship.
I have written out the transcript myself but I didn't quite catch a couple parts... and I don't know French so that's probably wrong, too.
Poirot: "It is most kind of you to invite me here, Chief Inspector."
Japp: "After staying with you for a whole week, Poirot, the least I could do is offer you a spot of lunch, ween you away from that... well, let you taste some proper English cooking."
Poirot: "And the good Madam Japp, it is today that she returns?"
Japp: "Yes, about 3 o'clock. There. Now that is what I call food."
Japp places plate of food before Poirot.
Japp: "That's your mashed potato."
Poirot nods.
Japp: "This is your peas."
Poirot: "Oui."
Japp: "Mushy peas, we call 'em. You'll love 'em. And this, the pièce de résistance... faggots."
Poirot: "Faggots?"
Japp: "Faggots. And there's spotted dick for afters."
Poirot: "Dick?"
Japp: "Yes, it's called that because..." Japp released he really doesn't know and stops
Poirot: "This is tragic, Chief Inspector."
Japp: "No, no, it's fine."
Poirot: "I can eat none of this wonderful food."
Japp: "What? Why?"
Poirot: "Because... I have an allergy of the faggot."
Japp: "An allergy?"
Poirot: "Oui. I do not know how you say it in English but in Belgian it is known as... 'le phobie de faggot'."
Japp: "I've never heard of that."
Poirot: "I am so sorry, Chief Inspector, I should have warned you."
Japp: "Well, this is a blessed upset, I must say. Still, you can have some spotted dick. You don't have a "phobie de dick" have you?"
Poirot: "No." chuckles then face turns to dread
Poirot holds up plate
Poirot: "Some cheese?"
Japp: "I'll have a look."
Poirot: "Some Camenbert, some brie perhaps?"
Japp finds something and places it before Poirot
Poirot: "Bon."
Poirot lifts the lid and reveals a piece of very plain cheese, unfit for his Belgian appetite
Japp: "Nothing like a nice bit 'o mouse trap."
Poirot makes a face of disgust
Per Wikipedia: Faggots are a traditional dish in the UK,[1][2] especially the Midlands of England.[3][4][5] It is made from meat off-cuts and offal, especially pork.[3] A faggot is traditionally made from pig's heart, liver and fatty belly meat or bacon minced together, with herbs added for flavouring and sometimes breadcrumbs.

I only watched this episode the other day. I suspect the writers were having a field day writing this.
Poor Poirot. How ever has he survived so long in England? Between the climate and the food it is enough to drive him back to Belgium.
The weather is quite similar...
Priceless
Poirot's so cute when he holds out his plate and: "Cheese...?" AAAAWW.
I absolutely adore the way Japp proudly turns and says: "And there's spotted dick for afters"!! XD
How in hell they didn't corpse,... There MUST be outtakes galore.
One of my favorite scenes in all of the episodes, for sure.
Season 6, Episode 2: Hickory Dickory Dock. It's right at the very end.
I just watched this episode on Britbox. Oh how I giggled. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Absolutely priceless!!
Nothing like a nice bit of mousetrap...
I laughed like hell on this part. Hahahaha 😁
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting.
@jshweid Thanks for clearing that up, I'll add it to the description. I had to look it up myself because I had no idea there was a food called that before this episode, and that the term "faggot" was only used to mean a branch/bundle of branches (in Britain) or a derogatory term for a gay man (America). Even without this language mix-up, I still think the scene is hilarious. I love these characters!
Im dying
nicely done. i tell people about this scene all the time.
Haha..fun with a great taste of class
Oh how precious🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I'm British and got all the jokes!
Totally agree, psammiad! You don't have to look any further than the 'Carry on' movies to see how much we British appreciate the double entendre!
A great scene! LOL!!
Aaaaah.... I wish this wonderful food right now :)))
Poirot may not eat it, I will.
I was hoping the bidet issue would come up again - does he ever find out it's true purpose?
Jennifer Calabrese I don’t think so lol
Can't you just imagine in a deleted scene:
"Hastings, you wouldn't believe the things the Inspector Japp eats!"
I'd love to hear how Hastings would explain it all. LOL
I used to question why Poirot often has Japp over for dinner (in the TV series), but not the reverse. Seeing this clears it right up for me. lol
I'm sure the Belgians ate as much offal back then as we did. But I expect they were a lot more gracious in naming it...
' no, no its fine..' lol :P :P
just coincidental distractions thank goodness :)
Legenda.
This part in the episode is funny, but it contradicts Poirot's culinary tastes. The show made great fun of his taste in food earlier in the episode by having him proudly serving pigs feet covered in goo. In another episode, he happily ate calves' brains fried in butter. In yet another episode, he ate lambs kidneys on a skewer. So, the idea that Poirot would turn up his nose at this particular meal is profoundly silly.
There's my two cents worth.
HAHAHAHAHA😂
thanks mate. sorry i didn't watch it till the very end. thanks anyway, i think i have it somewhere
Glad to hear Poirot has no "phobie de dick". I always wondered.
Hmm, I'm not sure if there is a full Poirot soundtrack available anywhere apart from the title theme, which I was able to acquire from a very obscure website a long time ago. If anyone can find any more, I'd love to know as well!

So are they exploiting the American meanings for some (low-grade) humor, or are those just coincidental distractions?
Spotted dick has nothing to do with Morgan Freeman, I assure you.
