  • Learn how to fix a sagging couch quickly and affordably, and with minimal supplies.
    We bought our sofa brand new, and within 3 months it was sad, saggy, and uncomfortable. When I sat down on the edge all I could feel was the beam driving into my legs. And it was so saggy that it was almost embarrassing to me.
    At first I was very upset. After all, I had done my research before buying a couch. I knew that wood was better than metal, that you wanted the couch to be screwed together and not glued. I had thought of everything...except for the cushions. We special ordered our couch in down, waited 3 months for it to arrive, and signed a form that prevented us from returning it. It had been so comfortable at the store, and I felt tricked. And all I could find myself thinking was how I couldn't wait till I can get a new one.
    Then I remembered that coach cushions are really just like giant pillows. And they sell furniture foam at the hardware store. And just like that, my hope was reignited. A little bit of furniture foam, polyfil, and elbow grease later, and we had ourselves a brand new couch.
    Over all I was VERY happy with how it turned out. It's been so much more comfortable and attractive, and my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.

    Great video. I plan to do the very same to my daughter-in-law’s down couch. A trick I learned along time ago is to use a dry cleaners plastic bag and put your foam cushion in it with the fill on top. Then it’s easier to slide it into the cover. After inside just ripped the cleaners bag and remove it. Waalaa!!

      I did the plastic bag trick, but I didn’t rip it off. For the longest time, every time we sat on the couch it sounded like a big fart.

    You can store the extra poly fill in one of those large plastic ziplock storage bags that have the vacuum hole for removing the extra air from the bag. Great way to store extra poly without taking up much space.

    It being a down couch does not matter. I have a down couch, thick velvet slip cover which cost $8000 from North Carolina furniture craftsmen. Most couches today are JUNK. Even brands like pottery barn or elm Street. My velvet couch has been washed over 20x, and has lasted 24 years of 3 giant boys over 200lb, husband 200lb and 2 dogs. It's FINALLY sagging. But I don't want to part with it because the alternative is spending $3000 for junk that breaks down in 3 months! I'm husband is going to put new springs in. I'm going to get a new cushion of foam and pay for custom slip cover. Even if this costs under $500 still worth it.

    Hi Abigail. How are the sofa cushions holding up and how is the comfort level now that you have been sitting on them for a few months?

    • @Abigail_Halsey
      @Abigail_Halsey  Год назад +11

      Sorry for the late response but, since I made the video the cushions are still much better than before I stuffed the couch. I did end up adding the rest of my polyfill in, about 10 months after I filmed this video, mostly to get rid of the excess polyfil, but also to refresh the couch. All in all, I'd say it is holding up very well and I am so glad I did it! Even before the refresh.

    You also could have covered the foam with a twin fitted sheet in same color as sofa tightening with large safety pins

  • @KellyNeddo
    @KellyNeddo Месяц назад

    I’ve got to ask, did they advertise that couch as a down couch, and then it had quite a significant amount of poly cushion couch Insert material in it? You should contact someone - there they sure don’t make couches like they used to. I’m looking for the feathers and all I see is a little bit of Feathers.
    I bought this very long green couch online and it is not the most uncomfortable crap. Really great to look at but
    Thanks for this video. I’m gonna go try to get some foam at Home Depot today. We tried using wood slats but it made it more un cozy. But I’m kind of mad for you that they sold you a couch made of down and then it was full of regular couch insert

    Here's an interesting thing I've just learned. I had the same problem as you describe, which looks awful and is not nice to sit on a saggy seat cushion. The thing is that after unzipping and removing the seat cover, the old filling can be put back in place, and is very comfortable. Sure, you need to put a luxury throw over the actual cushions that are sans cover, but it is surprising to find out that the fillings are still good to use - if you dispense with the outer covers (that you're packing with extra foam). It's that simple. However, I have paid an upholstery firm to put brand new top quality foam inside the zip open couch covers. And these will be ready in a few days, at a reasonable cost. (And I've not had to order foam online and struggle with cutting it up myself. So, just two alternatives mentioned here, if it helps anyone. Either do without the cover and use the filling with a sheet wrapped round it and a decorative throw on top, or pay a professional, not too much more than the cost of that foam in your link, and no offence, get all new foam into the bargain, professionally done.

    Hello, how has it held up since? I'm watching this 11 months later and curious how it's held up since.... We bought a $1700.00 down sofa as well and I'm having the same issue.

    • @Abigail_Halsey
      @Abigail_Halsey  Год назад +2

      Its held up pretty well! I did end up stuffing the rest of the polyfill in about 6 months later, but it was more to get rid of the rest of it than because the couch had sagged back to its pitiful pre-stuffed state. With that being said, I think the foam helped the most. I'd definitely recommend this diy.
