Maybe DJI could make a ultra low latency mode by lowering the resolution and bitrate and having it set constant. At present it's at 960x720 up to 25Mbps 22 - 28ms when for racing you could still compete with analogue running at 480x360 locked to 5Mbps with a latency of hopefully around 11ms.
Alex is SO consistent that i believe this is as good a test as any would be... when you're chasing the last milliseconds in a race to beat your nemesis, and your Alex level good...stuff like this matters !
I know what you mean, but it just makes Fatshark look worse. The DJI DVR crushes any onboard implementations by a large margin. Even analogue records better on it.
This is good to know. Looking at so much fatshark dvr footage I have always thought that there is no way I could fly with such an awful image, I would hit every branch and powerline in the world, lol. Not to say I don't already do that because I suck.
@@Alluvian567 yeah haha. if you wanna see some decent quality DVR, here's a video: ruclips.net/video/htoVyTmGgfc/видео.html obviously it's still not 100% of the quality it is in the goggles, but it's obviously much better than what the fatshark DVR shows.

Literally unless you are a pro racer DJI smashes all expectations. I have it and there is no comparison. Not only that I crash less because I can actually see where I am going. Its the tech I have waited for almost six years to see happen.
I had problems hitting the ground and getting much lower to the ground when I switched to DJI too. The DJI camera FOV is narrower than the foxeer cams I was using so you are getting less ground in the DJI view making you fly closer to the ground until you get used to it. Also the stick throw is longer on the DJI radio especially if you are used to the tarranis short throw throttle gimbal. That compounds the problem because your thumb needs to move further. Its a bit unreasonable to expect the same lap times and consistency with a system he has had very little time to adjust to especially at that crazy level!
Thank you for your honesty. I fly both and agree with your findings. DJI looks great but variable latency is bad for racing. It feels like the quad is slowing down and speeding up when the latency changes. The variable latency even bothers me in freestyle because I do a lot of fast proximity freestyle where timing is still really important. I use DJI mainly for cruising and taking in the beautiful scenery. Cheers!
I've had an mmcx pop loose like that and while you can fly, it feels like it stutters. I think it's very likely that's why Vanover thought there was variable latency. Neil Camara I agree the goggles screen is way too big for the Fov. Just heard from another channel there is a possibility that a DJI Fatshark module could be in the works
Neil, you can change the DJI screen size to suit yourself. I've been flying RC 52 years and FPV for 10 on quads and wings, I'm no racer just out having fun free-styling and exploring. Since changing over to DJI my flying has improved and has become far more enjoyable. I had Fatshark HD2 and the DJI screens size is similar, I never went to HDO when released because the screen was the size of a postage stamp and when HDO2 arrived I tried them several times also but by then analogue was dead for me, it was terrible and for me would have been a massive step backwards in technology and were the hobby is heading. I've since built from ground up 8 x race/freestyle quads and 2 x scale planes and a slope soaring glider (wings all with head-tracking) all with DJI FPV. My analogue quads are now all hanging on the wall collecting dust.
Great video. It still baffles my mind how Alex flies the way he does. I was on the edge of my seat and ducking through those gates. It is nice to see that digital is getting very close. Looking forward to how it continues.
Hey guys, first nice episode. I wanted to ask u guys on how many mw. do u flown with the Dji ? Because I guess the latancy gets better with 1200mw. Thank you, and keep going like this
Great video! I've noticed the slight video latency on larger DJI drones such as the Phantom series can be a pesky issue when trying to directly line up with an object and thought this might translate into a substantial for FPV racing or freestyle. Very nice to see that it's not much of a concern unless you are competing at the highest FPV race levels :-). Also gooood Lord your fast :-D haha I kept hearing Top Gun 1 "Feel the need for speed!" Replaying in my head while you were flying analog!
There's quite a few settings that influence the stability of the video stream. With a lower quality video the stream ought to be more stable. Wat settings did you use?
doesnt the dji unit weight more than the analog setup on a the other quad ? dji setup would be heavier unless you added more weight on the other quad. both drones should have been weighed and recorded on camera prior to starting the test
Did anyone else see the new episode of MacGyver over the weekend? It started with some FPV freestyle! First diving a building and across an intersection, and then into a multi-storey parking lot! Sadly only mere seconds of footage, but it's still FPV freestyle!
Guybrush Threepwood exactly, so what was the point in even making this video when we all knew before watching it that DJI would be slower because of the extra weight.
@@mkbfpv The DJI's air unit is heavier. In a race situation, you're going for the lowest weight possible. If analog is what gives you that, then that's a point in analog's favor. But from what Alex said, it seems the variable latency was the big killer. He didn't even mention the extra weight being a problem.
I wish you guys compared the Caddex vista to see if it had any extra varible Latency than the air unit. thanks for the great content! I have all of the parts in the cart for a digital racer and was looking at the vista but was concerned that it would have more latency than the air unit.
Dammit!!! How the hell is Vanny soo fast!!??? Love watching this dude fly. I'm Just a witness to greatness over here on my couch lmao. Great episode guys. Love it
You mentioned "variable" latency. Is that because the digital system is constantly modulating its power/packet frequency compared to an analog system that maintains a constant frequency latency? Is that a factor of the VTX power modulation or digital processing? Thanks AWESOME video.
I'd like to know what effect the variable latency would have if you were not using the DJI controller. Does the control signal suffer the same latency as the video or is it given a much higher priority? if not then its double latency image lag and then control lag.
Great video. Thank you so much!! It's good to hear from a professional pilot's prospective. I would also love to hear about how pure analog compares to the Bytefrost setup which is suppose to have constant latency and HD like image quality.
Hey... would be great to mount both systems (analog & digital) on a quad, and then compare the DVR from the analog against the digital (split screen) , and try to see in SLO-MO what that "variable latency" feels and looks like...
This is fun I love Science Lab with RR. Plus watching a racer, especially Alex is is so memorizing and fun. 8:32 this part was interesting, with how the signal struggles going close to the ground. I imagine something similar happens with analog right? Like with static? Would a raised platform for pilots help out both of these systems in that regard?
Good video, I knew variable latency would be the issue when it comes to the consistency top tier race pilots require to shave every fraction of a second on each part of a track but digital does make the viewing experience enjoyable as a spectator. I am seriously considering a digital setup for myself just for the joy of flying freestyle with such an amazing image and the smaller lighter offerings being produced with caddx are making it a lot more attractive for sure.
I Did it, and it is amazing for me. I flew drones in LOS and stabilized mode but just when I wanted to make the jump into FPV DJI came out with their system last year. And I was in great doubt. But it looks like I made a good choice by going for digital and not for analog thanks to JB, LeDrib and all the others in the community ( MaiOnHigh, NurkFPV, Cricket FPV, RCtestflight ) who did their best to explain FPV and show what is possible with a FPV Kwad . A huge thanks to Gábor Lukácsy who assisted me via the internet to help me to finish my beta flight tweak . now I am flying FPV in acro for 3 months and I am very, very happy to Fly FPV how I imagined FPV would be the first time. I am from Suriname and I have not met any FPV pilot here yet. Hope I will meet some, some day :).
99% of people who buy the DJI system can’t even get close to the speed you can fly at. They are people like me who just little around thinking we are FPV pilots lol. I just love the cinematic view. Very jealous of your piloting skills.
When i flew DJI stuff, the scary part was, the degradation would be slow and avoidable, but there were times it'd go from good to frozen. Not sure if they somehow eliminated that, but if the Mavics didn't have auto stability and return to home, they'd be goners. Analog is much more predictable and even in major signal failure, you can still often see ENOUGH to get back or avoid crashing. Gotta wait for DJI to get it better.
Yeah, I would have to practice that course in a sim for days to go 1/3 that speed. Who am I joking, I would be lucky to complete that course at all, lol.
I just don’t wanna ditch my current radio which I’ve now grown to love and know really well. That’s what has me sitting back waiting mostly. Maybe I’ll just go with the air unit or I may just dive in tho and build a freestyle/fun park flying quad with the DJI system tho eventually. This way I won’t need a GoPro to record some footage to show friends and family.
Drew: no bias or sway. Also Drew: Saying EVERYTHING possible to defend the losing system and giving no credit to the winner. 🤦🏻♂️😂 How good it is for freestyle is irrelevant in a race shoot out.
Acronautix exactly lol why in the world would they NOT recommend a product from a company that regularly sponsors them I don’t care what they say when they say “DJI is not sponsoring this video” bahaha wouldn’t make sense unless they don’t want the sponsorship for future videos and I highly doubt that ..
@@smitty6132 Exactly. And that last segment where Vanover stresses one more time he still LOVES DJI regardless...I mean they got to do it. I think their review is fair enough from their perspective, they got to make a living. And they did make the shootout kinda fair. Props to them even if your point stands
Ju Lien I also think it’s irresponsible of them to tell someone to go buy $1000 HD set up and at the same time tell them that the hobby might be going away..which one is it?
Seemed to me like he was just saying it works well for him doing flowy freestyle stuff but then acknowledged that analog was clearly the winner for racing.
@@smitty6132 Fair point. If you are loaded or sponsored then I guess DJI is the way to go, hands down, they proved only the elite racers and freestylers would get disavantaged. For the majority of people, this is not applicable though. This digital signal is only for confort. if you are not racing, analog still is good enough looking (and better in performance). I mean you still need a gopro to get decent footage. Who wants that glitched out video for editing and making cinematic views ? Honestly whether you do cinewhoop style vids or freestyle, you still want perfect 1080p 60fps or 4k footage to check it out later right ? I think what is really cool though, is the claimed 4km range. Interesting, but in terms of law, this is walking on eggs in Europe at least, you are not supposed to go that far, I can't think of any permit you can get allowing you to do that.

Extra weight would've caused a consistent slowness, the times he got with dji were inconsistent but still very close to analogue on a good run
I wish you guys compared the Caddex vista to see if it had any extra varible Latency than the air unit. thanks for the great content! I have all of the parts in the cart for a digital racer and was looking at the vista but was concerned that it would have more latency than the air unit.
Vista was not out yet when this was shot.
@@JoshuaBardwell Thanks JB!
What about dual camera, 3d vision HD? Now that would be wild
Yes! Car racing in VR is so much better... Its so much easier to detect distances in 3d! That will be next gamechanger....☺️
Damn! Vanny is a beast, that course was badass and FPV OASIS IS THE SHIT! Great episode guys!
weights?
Did the drones weigh the same? If the dji system is heavier would that account for some of the difference in the times?
Excellent effort guys, thank you very much.
Where both systems using the same motors props and what was the weight on each system?
A nice well balanced review, digital and analog both have a place in FPV. Their are many variables in them both, and both are becoming cheaper.
This is a great suggestion, I'd like to see that too.
How did they get it to beep like that! 1:34
Excellent test and love the honesty ......somewhere in the future Analog/Digital will be ONE.
And FUN is , what it is all about
13:31 JB's latency XD
I think with any level of competition you need a high and consistent frame rate over a perfect image. Whether it is ESport or racing.
What system did you use for timing Barewell???
Nice vid. Once the groove kicks in.. wow...
Thanks, this helped me decide that I'm definitely getting into FPV on a digital system!
Whenever the rest of the fpv companys start putting out digital, then I'll be interested.
Byte shark already exists and it sucks compared to dji hd
@@carveking soo true, Noone can compete with dji on this, I hear they have over 50 engineers on staff lol
it ain't gonna happen bruh, just give in to the dark side ...ya only got 3 years until all flying is banned so enjoy now
Hoping orca comes up with some kinda hd goggle module.🤷♂️ "hoping"
@@joshtnewby there is a dji module rumor, vid here on yt
Imagine getting into fpv and getting a dji set up right away. What a life
I Did it, and it is amazing for me. I flew drones in LOS and stabilized mode but just when I wanted to make the jump into FPV DJI came out with their system last year. And I was in great doubt. But it looks like I made a good choice by going for digital and not for analog thanks to JB, LeDrib and all the others in the community (
MaiOnHigh, NurkFPV, Cricket FPV,
RCtestflight ) who did their best to explain FPV and show what is possible with a FPV Kwad .
@@binary546 im happy for you. Some of us dont know such luxury
@@evanwest2945 I know, but I saved for it (FPV) and I had to make a choice, Digital or Analog
99% of people who buy the DJI system can’t even get close to the speed you can fly at. They are people like me who just little around thinking we are FPV pilots lol. I just love the cinematic view. Very jealous of your piloting skills.
Ron is Awesome!!!! OAS Hobby, baby.
The speed this guy flies is crazy.
I thought it was fast forward.lol
Yeah, I would have to practice that course in a sim for days to go 1/3 that speed. Who am I joking, I would be lucky to complete that course at all, lol.
As an FPV noob (still building my first qwad) do you have to use the DJI radio along with the air unit and goggles to get digital video?
no. the DJI air unit has a built-in receiver in it, but you do not have to use it.
How do I setup a drone zone in my area?
One unsponsored video does not hide the huge influence that DJI has on RR.
So?
I just don’t wanna ditch my current radio which I’ve now grown to love and know really well. That’s what has me sitting back waiting mostly. Maybe I’ll just go with the air unit or I may just dive in tho and build a freestyle/fun park flying quad with the DJI system tho eventually. This way I won’t need a GoPro to record some footage to show friends and family.
Will they let you run if you show up to a multi GP race with a DJI, system? I heard it messes with analog?
So DJI better for cinematic if its also planned flight?
