  • What does Maundy Thursday mean?
Maundy Thursday is a common name for Holy Thursday, which is the Thursday before Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Holy Thursday is the beginning of the Paschal Triduum, the holiest three days of the Church year.
On Thursday night Christians remember the events of the Last Supper when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. This is a practice many churches imitate today with priests and pastors washing the feet of various members of the congregation.
The word "Maundy" comes from the words Jesus spoke to his disciples in the Gospel of John during the Last Supper discourses:
"I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another" (Jn 13:34).
This is the verse before the Gospel in the Roman Rite on Holy Thursday. Jesus speaks these words shortly after washing the feet of his disciples.
"Maundy" comes from the Latin word "Mandatum," which means mandate or commandment. On Holy Thursday we are reminded of Jesus' Mandatum Novum, his new commandment to love one another as he loved us. This is perfectly expressed by the ceremonial washing of feet to commemorate the model of love Jesus showed for us during the Last Supper.

When I attended a Lutheran School, while we did have typical Passover food (I didn't know it to be Passover food then), we didn't have any church men of any kind (no priest, or in this case, pastor) wash our feet. In fact, because of that, I hadn't known that foot-washing was ever relevant, or what "Maundy" really meant. I figured it was a day of eating certain foods.
I liked every food present except what tasted like a bland cracker, unaware then that it was actually matzah (or unleavened bread). Of course, because we were kids then (except our teacher, of course), we drank grape juice instead of wine. And what we dipped in the salt water was parsley. There was also hard-boiled egg, lamb (well, I thought that was delicious anyway)... I think that was it. I do not, however, recall any bitter herbs then and there.
    Any questions about this memory?

Maundy" comes from the Latin word mandatum, or commandment, reflecting Jesus' words "I give you a new commandment." The washing of the feet of 12 men symbolizing the 12 apostles was done in abbeys by abbots, monasteries by priors, by kings, by fathers. I was also associated with almsgiving. It was a custom outside the liturgy.

How did Jesus treat the disciples? Did he show them anger? Yes he did. Did he show them compassion? Yes he did? Did he cause problems within the times? Yes he did.
When he states those words "Love one another as I have love you." We often interrupt this as he was all compassionate. This is not true he is of the father who was fierce, often, mean, requiring live sacrifices to feed his eternal need of bowing down to him. When this was not done he created Jesus to offer a sacrifice back to him.
This is why people are so confused why there is so much evil in the world. We have been taught this idea in Church and Catechism of Old is "X" and New is "Y" The trinity is all in one.
