it was January 29th, 2020 that he stated that. They also left out he said we don't need masks and then later basically said he lied so healthcare workers would have access to them.
As scientific data is gathered and new directions, hypothesis, and information is understood the directives are going to change. If this was completely new. We all wanted this to be no worse than the flu. As you gather information things will change.
Translation -- "I'm only guessing and will continue talking out of my ass as long as I can be on television. Can you tell?"
Then when he's exposed when his guesses are wrong his simply claims "the science evolved"
He IS the problem, NOT the solution and should be held accountable for his part in the destruction being caused.
The level of ignorance in this country is incredible. This is a situation similar to an R&D environment where the variables are numerous so the direction and outcome is loaded with uncertainty. Americans watch too much damn TV....they think there are these miracle solutions always available and obvious, when in reality dealing with a situation like this it's nothing like that. Fauci has taken a step-wise process based on the information available at the time. He's fed a ton of misinformation, yet these teams still have to sort through that along with their existing unknowns and somehow come up with a solution that satisfies everybody.

I'm a CNA in a nursing home in NC and first we weren't "allowed" PPE.
Then we were given cloth masks donated from a church group that had to be hand washed every day.
Then we were finally given ONE N95 per person to wear for a couple of days before being given a new one. (N95s are NOT made to be reused).
I dunno who Fauci was holding on to masks for, but it certainly wasn't the facilities that COVID was intially raging through like wildfire.

Someone asked Fauci if the US should prepare for the virus and Fauci downplayed it. That they shouldn't worry about it spreading in the US.

Because they were likely tested before the meeting or they weren't in a hotspot. The masks are useful because you don't know who is infected. Masks are a mitigation strategy to slow infection in community spreading environments so that the health services can keep up.

Also epidemics aren't uncommon dude, one of the reasons that swine flu (back in 2008ish I think) didn't become a big deal was because it was managed well by the administration.

davids11131113 - It was made a week earlier and that wasn’t what he said. He said people needed to followed the CDC and take it seriously. It was after he spoke about the measures he’d been told (from the WH) were in place to screen and contain folks coming back from China and other known hotspots. But those measures weren’t actually happening and containment did not occur.
A mere week later he’d completely changed his tune as it was evident he’d been lied to about containment.
