Gotta hand it to Carla, she was amazingly lucid and articulate while being rescued, rattling off the most pertinent details. I wonder if she mentally rehearsed what she’d say if found as a way to keep her sanity.
I initially suspected she was in on it because of how well she spoke during her rescue. I clearly cannot read people all that well, hence why it's a good thing I'm not a detective.

If your kid doesn't show empathy for animals by age 4 you should get them assessed. Add the other two indicators, bed wetting and fire starting, and you've got a problem.
I'm old. I use to tell my friends when I young to stay away from people that hurt animals. If they could hurt animals, they could hurt you I said. They laughed at me. Than the F.B.I came out with serial killer traits: 1 being hurting animals. Than they were just scared of me. I thought it was pretty evident, apparently not. Animals are living beings after all that was my train of thought.
My grandma told me that a lot of people thought it was about the devil but was in fact the singer professing the downsides of fame through song. Or something like that, i didn't pay attention to that convo much mainly due to the fact i don't like songs like Hotel California.
I always thought (due to the time it was recorded) that it was the lure of fame and $ then getting stuck in the illusion that is Hollywood or CA. Which is still true
Just a quick note on the Dreamcatcher topic: I had a dream catcher when I was a kid. I used to suffer from horrible nightmares, and the Aunt and cousin (who are into chakra and all that jazz) gave me one and told me it would take the bad dreams away. Being a kid, I believed them and hey! No more nightmares. I don't believe in that stuff at all, but what I do believe in is the power of the mind. If you give a kid something like that and say it will take away the bad dreams, if they believe it then it will work. I still have it somewhere but more as a momento to the thought and caring that went behind the gift :)
Same with my son. My daughter made him a dreamcatcher and he didn't have any bad dreams for a while. I liken it to a stuffed animal. As adults we don't need one to comfort us but kids do. I say whatever works
I was afraid of monsters in the dark when I was trying to sleep. My mom put Windex in a plain bottle and wrote "monster repellant" on it. I'd spray it all around my room before I went to bed. I felt so safe lmao.
personally, i just used to love making them. i dont hang them up because i dont want my apartment to have the vibe of a live love laugh sign on the wall but theyre fun to make. i allways made them from scratch by tying wool around a soft stick until i had a circle, finding cool tinkets to drill holes through and collecting random feathers (ofc disinfected). i highly reccomend that btw. gives you a better appreciation for your walks if you go around looking for trinkets, even if you only end up with a rock and a few bottle tabs to work with.
thats so sweet. I have a dreamcatcher over my bed, it was a really poorly made one with fake blue feathers and fairy lights that didn't work. I got rid of all the feathers and lights, fixed up the frame, and hung little amethyst chips from the chains on the end and put a moo carm with a wire-wrapped chunk of amethyst I made hanging from the center. it looks much better now, and I like the whimsical, comfy feel it adds to my room. sometimes my fan will blow and make the chains jingle a little bit, its really once to fall asleep to.
It is 100% what you believe. A placebo effect. Because Ojibwes (dream catchers) only work when made by a female "shaman" (that isn't what we call them but there is no other way to explain her position in english) using very specific materials. Decorative pieces are added after and it won't affect anything. This is just one tribe. But a handful more practice this exact thing but just under a different name in their language. It's always a woman because it's given at birth to hang over the cradle. It's just used for more now. Basically...a Native dream catcher bought from 99.9% of vendors are placebos. Hahaha

Really shows that lack of empathy runs in their family when the abusive mother defends her rapist child by saying, "he walked her home." Like, hey, he may have forced you into unspeakable acts at gunpoint, but at least chivalry isn't dead? She needs to be locked up too, IMO.
I love how they just dropped the sexual assault charges as part of a deal and EVERYONE, even Simon seems to just be all 👍. like, it just gets glossed over and there's more concern about this sicko needing therapy . 'my son is extremely sensitive to being hurt or scolded. and so i beat him... wait why is he violent?? what do you mean he grew up to be a serial killer?'
Man, is Nicole ever lucky that she got caught trying to get the last cell phone location! Had she gotten the information and gone out there she would likely be another victim.
It’s possible that she was something of a monster herself, so she may have truly believed his crimes weren’t as horrifying as they were. They seemed to share that mindset, considering he apparently remained a mama’s boy throughout the years, despite her violent abuse. Rolling him down a hill in a dog crate and laughing as he screamed and cried? That’s not discipline. She was having fun coming up with different ways to torment him. When he was fifteen and raped that poor girl, her defense of his actions being “but he walked her back home!” says a whole lot. Something was seriously wrong with her. It’s still a far cry from being a serial killer, though. There’s continuing the cycle of abuse and then there’s this massive escalation of it.
Abuse, whether sexually, physically or mentally, neglect are very common attributes in a serial killer's childhood development. Even being the victim of bullying can create severe trauma for the child. The child will usually repress their feelings until adolescence or adulthood. The actual crime of murder to them gives them pleasure and a sense of control over their victim. This action is how they deal with their P.T.S.D. and it may become an addiction and sometimes even a normal reaction when anxiety or anger are triggered.
You start listing off the shopping list and all my mind can think of is clippy (the Microsoft paperclip) popping up and saying: it looks like you’re planning on kidnapping and murdering someone. We would recommend some duct tape.
interesting how Todd's mother kept defending his actions, from the kidnapping/rape as he was a teenager and then when he got caught as an adult. the way I see it, she's defending herself more so than her son. she does not want to admit that she's the reason why his mind was so fucked up. if she wasn't such a horrid mother, things could have been different.
That's uninformed BS. The killer was a psychopath and today's science knows for sure, that psychopathism is genetically. It still could mean that the mother messed up and contributed a certain degree to it, but it also could mean, she was a normal or even a good mother and still her son became an evil killer.
@@bm-ub6zc Nope - 50/50 on genetics and environmental. You can have the genes for psychopathy and end up as Elon Musk or Boris Johnson with a relatively normal family life.. Or genes plus Inbredistani retardparents and end up like this nutter. Oh wait.
@@bm-ub6zc Did you not heat the story? Extremely strict, harsh beatings, locking him in rooms etc. That's not normal or good. That's abuse and abuse is scientifically proven to fuck up children and make them much more prone to violence, crime, rape etc. as adults. Also the fact she thought him walking his rape victim home meant that he wasn't a bad person shows how mentally fucked she was.
The fact that she said “he’s just sensitive to scolding”, BITCH YOU BEAT HIM FOR YEARS ALONGSIDE YOUR BOYFRIEND, WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PATTERN HERE?! AND VICTIM BLAMING, SERIOUSLY?! And yes I feel ok calling her a bitch, she beat her child for years and let her boyfriend do the same, and blamed a rape victim, she’s one of the influences on this fecker. I wouldn’t be surprised if she tried to frame him in a more positive light just so her morals wouldn’t be examined by the tabloids.
This whole thing is a reminder of why I don't trust people who say they're on sex crime lists for "misunderstandings". Recently had a supposed friend say this about herself & someone close to her, and it turned out she was an accomplice to her friend molesting children. Quickest I ever cut anyone out of my life ever. And sadly, she's not an isolated example.
@@Lieutenxnt_Dxn People don't generally lead with that when you get to know them. You can meet them at say the tennis club, where you, like a fool, went because you enjoy playing tennis. Or if you work at a daycare, because you care about the safety of kids, while co-workers may instead care about access to kids instead. Don't assume the worst but you also can't really be surprised by the worst either.
Point of clarification Simon, the serial Trifecta is actually, arson, animal cruelty and bed wetting. Those are the three most commonly shared traits among serial killers.
“He became independently wealthy through real estate, he can’t be that dumb” You would be surprised, some extremely dumb people can be successful realtors.
Yep. Buying land and doing nothing with it except selling it for profit is just as easy as making money buying toilet paper, PS5s and graphic cards, but for some reason rich people making profits in real estate is considered an "investment" instead of robbery.
My great aunt made her fortune selling homes. She is a hypochondriac, didn't go to college and isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, but she's rich.
Hotel California according to the band that wrote it, is about all the bands who go to LA to make it big and get caught up in drugs, money, agents, contracts and delusions of recording labels. It is about the lost of a bands ideals. Plus the line 'stabbing them with their steely knifes'. Is a reference to Stealy Dan buying into the recording's label sounds and ideas.
@@shitrockandthepurrmonster882 The actual line is "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave." 'Check out' is also slang for death. In other words, you're trapped, and the only way out is death. Very sinister review, looking back on it now.
I knew “one of those kids” in high school. He was my friend. Always dark. Always talked about murdering the guys he hated at school. Wanted to buy a gun. Always carried knives in school. I was always scared that he’d try something. That I’d come into school one day to find out that he’d done something bad to someone or set a building on fire. Turns out he was in a situation where he wasn’t able to live as himself. And he had a lot of hatred for who he was. Like second hand hatred for himself and instead hated everyone else. He’s much better now. Runs a climbing gym, always helping people out if they are seeing hard times, letting them sleep at his place, protecting his friends who are targeted for being POC or gay or trans. Walks girls or even guys to their car. Just very happy and comfortable with himself. He’s my best friend and my partners best friend. We are currently arguing over who gets him for the wedding. Will he be a groomsman or a brides man. We were all friends in high school and he’s always been the loudest in trying to get us together.
That's the thing is you were friends with him. All of these individuals were failed not by one or two people buy by society in large. I grew up in the area Simon's talking about, and I have to say that hearing a British voice use extremely southern town names is highly entertaining 😁😁
I always love people trying to pronounce southern, or worse yet, names of towns etc that are Native American in nature. You’d think that Callum would Google that and put it in the script. 😆 Especially that Simon is a cold reader and can’t pronounce anything he considers foreign.
*southern English. The Welsh, Scottish, west country (imagine an old-timey English farmer) and northerners like me are part of Britain too and our accents are bizarrely different for a small island country.
The part about Todd’s father was difficult for me, my father was absent and I idolised him thinking that I was being prevented from seeing him when he actually couldn’t be bothered. The few times in my teens when I saw him I was taught how best to stab someone to inflict as much pain and harm on them as possible and where the most vulnerable veins and arteries were. He also tried to make me wear an old army helmet while he shot at it with an air rifle. It’s scary to be reminded of my childhood in a video like this. Also don’t worry guys I’ve never made any Amazon reviews

It really disturbs me that real estate agents aren’t required to pass a background check. They’re given keys to clients’ houses! They can come and go in any clients’ property. I hope the requirements for this have changed. I believe in rehabilitation, but dangerous felons shouldn’t have unlimited access to people’s homes.
100% agree! They would have an opportunity to be alone with a potential victim. Background checks should absolutely be necessary for a real estate license!
I have a dream catcher (moved recently, and it's not hung up, but it will be), because I talked to a coworker about the fact that I had chronic nightmares. He told his fiance, sometime after that conversation. She asked him to find out my favorite colors, which he did, and then she made me a dream catcher in my obnoxiously bright favorite colors. I love it, because it was a thoughtful, handmade gift from a person who hadn't even met me, at the time. I no longer have chronic nightmares, but that's because I got medicated for crippling anxiety.
I had chronic nightmares as a kid, and my mother got me a dreamcatcher. Power of suggestion + child = no nightmares! When my son started having nightmares terrors when he was very little, I tried the same thing and POOF! I don’t have an opinion about how real their effect is, but I really appreciate the effect of the story on small children! 😅

Oh my god right, and people wonder why i lean towards gun control! When done right, it's incredibly effective. Take a look at Australia, they USED to have a mass shooting problem but then they actually FIXED IT. Will our country do it right? Probably not but hey, it's most likely a step in the right direction even if it isn't really enforced.
As someone diagnosed with BPD, I can say with experience that the diagnosis is no excuse. BPD may cause extreme emotions, but everyone still has free will and gets to choose how to behave. BPD is no excuse to hurt others without consequence.
They only blamed BPD on the rage outbursts as a child. They never at any point said it had anything to do with murder. Nobody is saying its an excuse or that it takes away free will.
Can’t imagine how you could be part of the true crime “community” and also find it even the tiniest bit surprising that loads and loads of true crime fans were eager to blame the ex-wife. These people take such a special thrill in blaming and excoriating women at absolutely any opportunity
What? It was the cops not the "community" Jesus Christ. The community isn't the people investigating That goes for any crime case, cops look at the spouse, it's not a woman's issue. Holy shit.
@@citizenvulpes4562 Simon was specifically saying that tons of people on the internet were (/are) totally intent on blaming the ex-wife, sure she was involved even after it was clear she wasn’t, and he went on to say that he was surprised to learn of this. I had thought from the title that this would be a murder because someone was mad about a bad Amazon review. I once had TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE AT SEPARATE TIMES threaten me with physical violence over the same one-star book review I posted on Goodreads.
To me, "hotel california" is less of a place, and more of a state of mind. A figurative place, where everyone is afflicted in some manner by their own vices and stuck in a perpetual purgatory of their own making
I wonder if we can start charging psycho parents for "contributions to the production of a serial killer." I'm sure there is at least on serial killer out there with a totally normal childhood, but the number of cases where they are as bad or worse than their kid (this is a helpless child their supposed to love) is just astounding.
I've yet to find a genuine one tbh. People will bring up Bundy, but when you dig deeper, you'll find a lot of twisted sht in his background. Dahmer is also referenced, but again, his childhood was far from normal. I think we can all agree that a child's mind is fragile and precious, and needs to be nurtured and strengthened with affirmation and challenge from their protectors. There's no doubt, among anyone well versed in child psychology, that we need to stop people from hurting kids, for the good of society.
@@Zeberence From my own reading, there exists predisposition for certain tendencies, but they can be nurtured and directed to follow rules and morals. It's so rare to find a case whose childhood wasn't abusive, we can't afford to ignore the correlation. They're terrible people who fucked that kid up but I'm so angry at the mental health professionals that evaluated him at 13. I've seen so many kids with diagnosis and medication when what they need is to get away from their abusive caretakers.
No matter how badly he was abused, he's the only one ultimately responsible for his actions. There are plenty of abused individuals who don't become rapists and murderers, or even criminals at all. That's not a justification for child abuse, nor a dismissal of how the abuse impacted his development and pushed him to commit his crimes. If we hold abusive parents equally responsible as their children for the horrific acts committed by those children, then we have to hold abusive parents equally responsible for any profound successes abused children attain as well. Levelling full blame on the shitty parents is nothing but an attempt to dismiss the element of personal responsibility we all hold for our actions.

On the subject of buying land in the U.S., there's actually a TON of land that hasn't been developed whatsoever, and consists mostly of extremely dense forested areas. I think that's one of the really cool things about the states. Also, in most cases, the further the land is from towns and cities, the cheaper it is. I've got a friend who bought 10 acres that's actually very close (as in 10 or 15 minutes) to a major city here, and he paid just over $19,000.00.
I bought 6,000 for about 850k and I'm about an hour from a major city. I like the closeness and convenience just not being around all the people. Connections to water both waste and drinking and getting power all were very high initial costs. I now have a big ass water wheel generator and over 150 solar panels so the house is good but the fabrication and wood shops both have grid because of the need for clean 3 phase power for my CNC machines and a few other machines. But I can charge both my model 3s and my model x in addition to some recreational vehicles that are electric plus power the whole house 24 hours a day year round with never a hiccup now. She was kidnapped and murdered in the 80's right up the street from where I grew up, my parents would drive me up to her house to hammer home not talking to strangers.

The fact that Simon does not know The Eagles - Hotel California is depressing on several levels. Simon, the thing about that Amazon review for the locks is that it is in reference to the last two lines of the song: "You can check-out anytime you like, but you can never leave."

In the US they generally ask if you've been convicted of a felony, and you're supposed to be honest. It's up to the employer on how much they'll look into it. Of course some jobs require background checks, like those involving being around kids, weapons/security, etc.
Imagine calling the phone company, pretending to be a detective, and demanding records.... as if the phone company can't see who owns the phone that is calling
In 2021, most businesses do actually do background checks through many of the services that have come about since about 2005. Many smaller businesses still may not do them do them because of the cost. While it's been mandated for some types if jobs such as teachers, daycare providers and workers or anyone else dealing with children it's not been something that was widely done. And if they did not do background checks, checking 'no' on the box asking if you ever committed a crime was never usually checked.
it depends on the job for background checks. As a graphic designer I only marked 'no' to the question "have you've being charged with a crime" on the employment form and then I was pretty much good to go, but when I got certified to sell cannabis I had to get a background check and fingerprinted. Normally companies are suppose to check though.
I remember when all this happened. His property in woodruff is about 15 miles from my house. It’s wild hearing Simon talk about my area lol. Another South Carolina serial killer story that is kinda famous and rather gruesome is the story of Pee Wee Gaskins.
I'll never forget the magnet fishing video I watched where one of the items pulled from a canal was a pretty small steel box (like maybe half the size of a toaster, if that) and it was full of ammo. As an American I'm thinking, 'Why did someone chuck perfectly good ammo into a canal?" but this took place in England, so the magnet fishers were utterly freaked out like they found a dead body or something, and called the police. It's so funny because in Alabama where I live and metal-detect, if I'd found as many silver coins as I have bullets and shell casings, I'd be rich. NOW, it would be hard to even count them while listening because they overlap from all directions, and some are semi-automatic so very fast firing. And I would really need to count from about 10 PM to 2 AM, because some people are apparently not content with the actual stroke of midnight. Same goes for fireworks; round about July 1st I'll start hearing them, all the way through the 5th or 6th. Some gunshots mixed in there too, thought it can be hard to tell them apart. What I always think is, if you wanted to murder somebody with a gun and get plenty of 'getaway' time, what a perfect time to do it! Nobody would even call the police about the gunshots!

Hahaha

#elisabethcash #jacobcash
She probably also stayed to keep the family together. Never her fault, right?
This action is how they deal with their P.T.S.D. and it may become an addiction and sometimes even a normal reaction when anxiety or anger are triggered.

interesting how Todd's mother kept defending his actions, from the kidnapping/rape as he was a teenager and then when he got caught as an adult. the way I see it, she's defending herself more so than her son. she does not want to admit that she's the reason why his mind was so fucked up. if she wasn't such a horrid mother, things could have been different.
She's co-dependent to abusive
men and was probably raised like that herself. No defence for her, but she probably followed a horrid family pattern.
That's uninformed BS. The killer was a psychopath and today's science knows for sure, that psychopathism is genetically. It still could mean that the mother messed up and contributed a certain degree to it, but it also could mean, she was a normal or even a good mother and still her son became an evil killer.

I think we can all agree that a child's mind is fragile and precious, and needs to be nurtured and strengthened with affirmation and challenge from their protectors. There's no doubt, among anyone well versed in child psychology, that we need to stop people from hurting kids, for the good of society.
Or its genetic
@@Zeberence From my own reading, there exists predisposition for certain tendencies, but they can be nurtured and directed to follow rules and morals. It's so rare to find a case whose childhood wasn't abusive, we can't afford to ignore the correlation. In every single study, there exist exceptions, but we don't take action or accept theories based on exceptions. Correlations are what we look for ans act upon.

In the US they generally ask if you've been convicted of a felony, and you're supposed to be honest. It's up to the employer on how much they'll look into it. Of course some jobs require background checks, like those involving being around kids, weapons/security, etc.
And since it's often legal to discriminate against felons I'm pretty sure that the truth is rarely spoken.
I, for one, absolutely love the derails!

@@aceofkpop1243 Yeah it's stupid, dangerous, and unfortunately seems to be ever-increasing. My training is in science so at this point I wish I'd thought to start doing a systematic study on it, even if only a personal one. I just know that I NEVER heard gunshots at the stroke of midnight on New Year's until maybe the late 90's, and then it was just a few.
