Love these particular era of GM personal luxury cars; Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Chevrolet Monte Carlo. So many variations and paint schemes. These were everywhere, but my family always opted for a four door sedan for obvious reasons...kids! Nice survivor. Thanks Lou!

I always had a love of the GM A-bodies growing up. I came across a 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham for sale that I bought and loved. It had a 350 V-8 and t-tops. I loved that car, but I sold it after a few years because it was starting to rust. I could kick myself now because as it turned out, they only made about 2,000 of them like that. It was a Hurst/Olds.

Plush Velour seats need to be an option on modern cars. Leather freezes your butt in the winter (I know they have heated seats, but it still has to warm up) and burns it in the summer. Velour is comfortable 365 days a year the moment you get in.

When I was 11, WE were on a family vacation and Dad got me up at 10PM and took me to the car dealership, while my Mom slept. This was the car I wanted him to buy.... I was so damn excited because these cars had just a tinge of European style with all the big car feel of a Buick. I was so pissed when he showed up with a four door, 307, skylark! But, that was it! It wasn't a v8. Two years later, he showed up with a two door LaSabre…… It was all good after that. Love these Buicks. BTW, the feature I thought was so cool was how the radio protrudes out from the dash.... Like a little bookshelf..... Yeah, the things 11 year old kids think are cool! Thanks for bringing us this car! Brings back a ton of good memories. BTW, what you guys said about the interior, is so true. My Dad special ordered both cars with cloth interior.... rather than leather in the LaSabre. it's like sitting on pillow furniture. Loved that car..... From an era when a Buick was still a BUICK! The last of their kind.

One night I was out with friends in my car, and at a red light one asked if my car was running, it was so quirt. I revved the engine to let him know, yes, it was running.

Wow, I totally waxed nostalgic and took a trip down memory lane with this video!
My parents took delivery of a custom-ordered 1979 Buick Regal Turbo Coupe in October '78. It had the optional two-tone blue metallic paint with matching stripe that ran down the beltline of both sides from the front to the C-pillar, and then up and over the roof. Thus, it didn't have the vinyl landau roof. The stripe treatment separated the two shades of blue metallic, and according to the 1979 brochure (which I still have), Buick offered this metallic two-tone paint treatment in blue, burgundy/red, silver/gray, and tan/saddle. I remember the lighter of the two shades of blue was a bit darker than this car's powder blue color, and the darker shade was more of a medium blue color. They didn't want the Limited option with its velour interior, so they opted for the blue vinyl interior with highback bucket seats and center console. It had the sport wheels instead of the wire wheel covers.
These early Turbo Coupes (as well as GM's other turbocharged cars from this era) were not very well thought out. I guess they failed to realize the amount of heat that would be generated from the turbo unit, as it caused the paint on the hood to oxidize and peel within 5 years. They should've incorporated some kind of heat exchanger/intercooler into the design, and realizing their error, GM rectified their turbo powerplant with the '84-87 Grand National/GNX with its integrated intercooler. Unfortunately, oversights like this, as well as ones of quality control, were typical of American automakers during this time period. I can certainly attest to our '79 Turbo Coupe's glaring lack of quality control, as it became a running joke whenever we'd find mystery parts that had gotten loose and fallen down, laying on the interior floor or underneath the car.
When our TC turned a decade old, it started having intermittent transmission problems only whenever my mom drove it. While in motion, the car would do this weird thing where it would lurch forward and shake, like it was slipping gears or momentarily slipping into Neutral and then back into Drive. She was literally chirping the tires without even trying! However, the stupid car never acted up whenever my dad drove it, LOL! Go figure! Until one time about a year later, it finally did, and it was really bad. It was as if the car had dropped its entire transmission as it rolled to a halt. The car was completely dead. I remember we were 40 miles from home, and my dad and I trekked half a mile to a pay phone to call up AAA.
My parents started shopping around, and my mom wanted to get in on the SUV craze. So, just as our poor TC gave up the ghost, they used it as a trade-in for a brand new '91 Toyota 4Runner in November '90, and that's the last time we saw it. We'd occasionally drive by that dealership to see if maybe they had fixed it and set it out in their used car lot. But nope, we never saw it again. My dad joked that "they probably sent that pile of junk to the scrapyard."
These early Regal Turbo Coupes are quite rare and hard to find nowadays. By "early", I'm referring to '78-80, as GM refreshed the Regal for '81. You can find base models and Limiteds, but hardly ever a Turbo Coupe. Yeah, GM may have produced several thousand of them, but 40 years later, they're very hard to find now. I know, because I still look on eBay and other classic car websites, as this is one GM car that will always have a warm spot in my heart. Plus, of the three model years of these early Regal Turbo Coupes, I like the '78-79 with its single headlamps. The Regal got dual halogens for '80, starting the "four-eyed" look of pretty much all '80s cars. It's definitely awesome to see a survivor example still on the road today, as I'm sure quite a few of these early TC's saw the same fate as our TC and became recycled sheetmetal on some '90s and '00s cars.

I remember seeing one almost identical to yours back in 1979 when I was a lot boy at a Buick dealership and thinking that it was one of the best looking Regals I'd seen, and still rings true. I hope you enjoy your Regal for many years. Congrats on finding it. 👊😎👍

Not a big Buick fan but this is a very nice Buick. I love the colors and options on this car and the engine sound was awesome. I am not a big fan of the 231 v/6 never was even when I was younger they had loads of problems with those car engines. The turbo boost is a nice feature but I am old school I love my v/8's. Awesome car and the owner I love his tour of his car and have seen some of his before. A neat guy for sure. I always enjoy listening to him and his cars descriptions. Nice Buick Lou and thanks for sharing.

I believe in 78 it was the second fastest car in America in the quarterwhere would beat the Camaros in the trans am's when the turbo was warmed up... Only thing they could beat it was the vet... I'm impressed that it still has the original engine. Many of them blew up (sometimes while still under warranty). The problem was that the dated ECU's at that time couldn't retard engine timing fast enough under boost when it detected spark knock, with the result being spun bearings and broken connecting rods. This one is definitely a survivor

I actually had one, it was butchered up with a 5 litre Chevy. Bought it from a family member with intentions of fixing it up, but the bumpers rusted off the frame. Not a good thing. I was going to put the interior into my '79 Malibu along with the hood, bit I was commanded to be rid of it or else. I kept the hood and aluminum deck lid, though.
