I love to flip through these old magazines. I have a lot from the 30s to 60s. I am always amazed at how good the still are: these colours and drawings, no fading. The shorter dresses and skirts for college girls show that fashion is not a quick change. It is not a cut in style from 1939 to 1940 it is more a progress.

Definitely veering very close to what we see as the 1940s silhouette ❤❤
I'm currently trying to sew clothes using the Haslam system to create a thirties/forties style wardrobe. She actually has patterns for nightwear and lingerie for those who want to be authentic from the skin upwards

My mother (born in 1927) told me that obstetricians were adamant that young mothers only gain 20-25 lbs during pregnancy. After the baby was born, you would have perhaps 10 lbs only to lose and that would disappear naturally with breast feeding. That may explain how the maternity styles worked.

That is what my mom told me about her experience in 1959. I on the other hand I had my children in the '80s and '90s which was the era of "gain as much weight as you want because it's healthy for the baby." Yikes! It was so hard to lose weight after having children. It took me years and I still struggle with it

The skirt lengths are quite short by the late 30s. This goes against the commonly held idea that skirts were long throughout the 30s and got short in the 40s due to fabric rationning in the war. We can see that the trend was underway much earlier.

As a mom of 6 kiddos, these dresses are super comfy to wear. I personally hated having a tight shirt around my belly. Dresses like these are flattering for me especially when Im pregnant. I only gain like 25-30 pounds in pregnancy, but theres no way I can hide my belly like these glamourous gals haha But yeah these dresses are very elegant to wear when pregnant.
