  • The abortion debate is back in Australia - even though abortion has been decriminalised everywhere in the country.
As reproductive rights become a major talking point in the US election, some politicians in the Australian state of Queensland are also calling for restrictions on the termination of pregnancies.
We took to the streets to ask Queenslanders about their views on abortion.

It's genuinely jarring to hear American "culture war" talking points being used by politicians here, why would we WANT to be like America? It's a $hitshow

I’m 68 years old female, I marched in the 70s for legal abortion and if I have to get out there again on my rickety knees I will !!

I am a grandmother, I want my daughters and grand daughter to have the same reproductive rights as I have. I am sick of men telling us what to do with our bodies.

I remember the dark days of illegal abortions. I went to school with young girls too scared to tell their parents about their situation. How many young women were impregnated and abandoned by the “boyfriend” or victims of a r@p!st or even worse “pack r@pe”? How many married because it was expected and a child grew up in an unhappy marriage or worse was labelled a “b@st@rd”? I do not want my grandchildren to go back to the days when there was no choice … and let’s be real, everyone in those days knew that the rich and connected always knew that money could solve their problems.

It has nothing to do with religion the Bible doesn’t talk about abortion. It only says murder is wrong. Science proves it’s not your body. If that was the case When someone gets pregnant they would just be fat. A Baby inside you is different genetic make up compared to anyone that is alive or lived unless you are a twin. Any line that you draw to choose when personhood starts always excludes someone living.

    Stuff the nay sayers!
Abortion SHOULD be made available as it’s the female’s right to choose!
My missus had an abortion 28 years ago now as she never wanted kids so the decision was easy for her.
    No regrets

Agreed. Just take heart of the fact that most of us men are in total support of women's right to choose. Frankly, the media giving this topic as much airtime as they are does not help at all.

So pleased to hear Australian speak on this. Only two people, and both are men, want to restrict or remove women’s health care choice. One is based on religious beliefs, (no one is aborting babies during the birth, he is watching too much American fox), and Robbie Katter, for political point scoring. Robbie Katter is so irrelevant to the people of Australia he needs to garner attention while riding his father’s coat tails in his rural Qld electorate. I would not be surprised if Crisafulli suddenly sees reason to give credence to the bill if Katter is stupid enough to put it up.

I think politicians should stay in their lane and not be allowed to make medical decisions about the medical procedures of other people. I'm pretty sure Katter wouldn't be too pleased if other politicians tried to pass legislation to ban men from having vasectomies.

I agree with abortion, but no later than 12 weeks after conception. Not late in the pregnancy, when you are taking the life of a fully developed foetus. In my opinion.

So you want a situation where women are dying like in the USA because doctors have to be sure that a woman is sick enough to do one? Maternal mortality has increased phenomenally in Texas, including amongst women who want their pregnancies but gave miscarried- look it up. Most women do not want an abortion but make a decision about the impact on their bodies and lives. You will NEVER have that dilemma.

The majority of abortions is not due to rap* it’s due to carelessness it’s irresponsible people engaging in fornication and adultery .
Wow , WHAT ABOUT THE BABY’S BODY AH 😣 IT’S NOT JUST YOUR BODY ANYMORE YOU ARE CARRYING A LIFE . All those who commit murder will stand before God to account for this abominable SIN.

If your religion tells you not to have an abortion, don't, but don't tell other people what to do with their lives. Stop persecuting and shaming others, it's not your job to judge.

    Where were the Australians?
Every little baby has a right to live and the father has rights as well. The father should be able to have his say. There are many couples who want a baby and can't have a baby.
Some people should be grateful that their mothers didn't have a abortion.
