Location: Koh Tao (ferry) to Chumpton (bus) to Bangkok (overnight train) to Chiang Mai (FINALLY).
We left the island paradise of Koh Tao to travel overland to the far North of Thailand, Chiang Mai. We took a ferry from Koh Tao to Chumpon. Then we took a bus from Chumpon to Bangkok. After arriving in Bangkok at 9 p.m. we took an overnight night train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
The train ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai took 14 hours, and unfortunately we got stuck in 3rd class! We didn't book our ticket for the overnight train ahead of time, so we when we arrived in Bangkok they only had 3rd class tickets available. It was impossible to sleep on the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai!
By the time we arrive in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we were exhausted. However, we pulled ourselves out of bed and quickly fell in love with city of Chiang Mai! Traveling from Koh Tao to Chiang Mai overland was rough, but it was totally worth it!
Over land travel in Thailand is an experience in and of itself!

I love re-watching your old vlogs and seeing the progression in filming style and editing style. What I love about these ones is the “raw” experience of it - wandering the streets, questionable transportation and accommodation, and also your point of view of it all. I will be so sad when country 100 is reached because... then where will you go? Who will we watch now?!
I'm rewatching too😁 Gotta love some Kara & Nate!!!
This is so far my favorite vlog. You document the real side of traveling. Not just joy but the hectic side of it too. Unpredictability, finding your way in a foreign country. All of them got me hooked up. I very much like Nate's optimism. Yours too Kara.
I’m literally rewatching all of your 700 + vlogs because they are so entertaining :) especially during the whole pandemic thing. Keep it up guys! Y’all are probably not even reading this right now but it’s the thought that counts right?
I’m literally watching this on the Lomprayah bus from Koh Tao to Bangkok 😅 I love rewatching old vlogs now that I’m actually visiting these places myself!
I started the "watch from beginning" playlist and my has your quality of editing improved so quickly.
I just started binging your videos from the beginning. I’m really enjoying seeing the different places you travel to & your interactions with the culture there.
Am absolutely LOVING your vlogs and y'all! Questions: Kara: how in the world do you eat so much and stay in such beautiful shape?? Secondly, how do you fall asleep so quickly, and fall asleep anywhere?? I envy it all, haha! Anyway, y'all are such an inspiration to get out there and see the world; thanks for sharing it with the rest of us! ❤
By walking so much!
Glad I stumbled across your channel!! You guys are awesome....hats off to the 3rd class ride 🙌🏼
Thank you! :)
You stumbled...you didn’t stumble...it’s a car crash...these 2 babies are hopeless
I am so randomly watching your videos as I've been planning my next trip back to Asia, and the expression ya make when your not sure if the driver understands where you want to go and if your going to end up in the right place is how all travel is there for me. It's like what's going to happen next? always a surprise!! Love!
really like the music for the last couple of vlogs, nice choice Kara and great job editing, love it! :)
The train to Chiang Mai. That brings back memories and thanks for bringing them back. I love your videos.
You guys are rock stars. I don't think I could do 3rd class. I would've chosen the hotel. Your ability to endure is an inspiration to me. :-)
The answer is easy never take Seatran but always take Lomprayah lived on the Island of Koh Tao for almost 1 year and was always travelling with Lomprayah is so worth the money :)
Absolutely love you guys. Best channel on youtube 👌 can't stop watching you guys
been catching up to my favorite country now, Thailand, my home 💕😊 p.s. the taxi driver was trying to imitate the sound of a train in Thai, that what he meant but he got it the first time you said it 😊
You got the same things when you travel in Egypt. They're most likely rest stops for bus operators so you can eat and buy stuff. Love them. That actually looked quite cool.
We absolutely love Thailand. Retirement destination for sure
The difference between these old videos and the new ones... I can't 😂
Love you Vlogs.ive watched the more recent camper van vlogs and watch every new vlog but I've started from the beginning. Got to have my Kara and Nate daily fix.
Thanks you two x
Hats off to you for that mammoth 3rd class journey- we did the night train to Surat Thani luckily we got 2nd class. You guys are hardcore! Love it!
Absolutely love watching all these!🙈 but I miss y'all vlogging all your meals lol!
Oh no I'm sorry! We ate lots of boring western food on the island. the Thai food just wasn't the same! Very touristy! Don't worry, the next couple vlogs has lots of eating :)))
Thank you for showing how traveling is a puzzle sometimes-- you just have to figure it out and it's not ideal. The payoff is always worth it, but what a journey!
I love your videos. Keep making them. More power to your elbows!! x
Found myself shaking my head when you were going to go over night in 3rd class on the train. Ugh. I've done this twice - once on my own from Warsaw to Riga and then when I let friends do this in China - over 24hrs on a K train from Zhengzhou to Guilin.
Welcome to Thailand,Thank you very much to come travel in my country .We hope you will happy to this trip.
Oh my gosh, I miss Thailand so much
I loved Kara slapping that sticker onto Nate, it was so funny
From this train ride to the glacier express in Swiss. You guys have come sooo long! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I guess the stop-off place you thought was strange around 5:00 is the Thai equivalent of a motorway service station. Seems a lot less commercialised, which i like, just get what you need without expensive frills!
man i can not get enough of these! I hope to run in to you guys at DFW one day. Its usually where i stop on the way to Cozumel.
Hay guys,at least you had semi padded seats. We took an overnight train from Copenhagen to Oslo when we were students back in 1980. We were very disappointed as the seats were just wooden slats, so sleeping was just impossible. Very nicely shaped and polished, but still…just wood. We had also booked seats on a connecting Norwegian train from Oslo to Voss the following morning, one of the most scenic train rides you can do. Of course, that train had the most comfortable seats ever, so it was very difficult to stay awake for the lovely scenery.
i have been watching you guys for a while now,i really enjoy.great job on the vlog.
I wouldn't mind riding it for a 3rd class - it's not crowded and looks clean.
Thanks for sharing your experience :)
6:00 Is call rest area. Food and bathroom 😊
I salute you guys for going up to Chiangmai on 3rd class.
Same here, salute to yr extreme train ride. I Did a 12 hrs train ride from Malaysia to Bangkok As my 21st birthday present to self. I looked back at What I Did, i was crazy 😊
Love traveling & enjoy my journey. I just return from Angkor wat 3 weeks ago + took the 6 hrs Bus to Phnom phen + return to Siem Reap 2 days later. I cancelled my Bus trip to ho chi ming coz I forgot to apply For multi entry visa , So it will cost me aprox US $80 to visit HCM For 24hrs
Working my way through all the vlogs. The guy on the train was a prediction of what 2020 would be like. He was wearing a mask.
I love how you don't complaint at all for travelling that many hours to get to a place.
you always seem excited to get to a new place, no matter the mean of transport. that is very genuine
Kara! Your hair belongs in a Pantene commercial! Nate, you should be a double for Christiano so he can escape fans! Doubles get paid well!! Lol
Chiang Mai!? We're there too! (vlogs are a bit behind right now, but i'm catching up)
I know a little too well the feeling of these long journeys, Bangkok to Koh Lipe was a pain. About 24h of total travel, vlogging kept me sane :P
+Elizabeth Travels so cool! We've only been here for about 36 hours, but we're loving it so far! How about you?
Love it too :) Are you here for long? I always like to meet cool travelers!
+Elizabeth Travels we'll be here till the 11th. We should grab a meal sometime!
Kara and Nate Awesome! Message me on facebook so we could arrange that :) facebook.com/elizabethtravelsnow/

+Sweety Pul thanks so much!
I hope 7-11 is sponsoring you guys as much as ya'll have commented on them!
No way I had saved those 40 bucks for that. Omg! How was your back after that? Nice choice of music Kara. Way better travel day music. ;) Thanks for showing the real deal travel.
You guys are awesome thanks for sharing. Keep up with traveling
Thanks so much! We'll be traveling at least through the end of September so plenty more to come :)
+Kara and Nate Are you guys going through Vietnam and Loas?
+014aircanada correction December* and yes very soon!! Those are the next two places we'll go after Thailand :)
5:20 its like a service station or a roadside cafe
Pad Thai is my absolute favorite after my husband ordered it randomly from a Chinese restaurant and didn't like it. I would love to try authentic pad thai for once.
can't wait to see the nxt part..
+Pratyush Ghosh The train ride was rough, but we're loving Chiang Mai! The long journey was totally worth it!
+Kara and Nate in India we use to do such a kinda journey so I think I will be fine.. and all day long I use to wait for ur lovely videos.. you guys are really awesome.. I invited some frnds of mine to subscribe ur channel..

+Mikee Lazaro aww thanks! We use the canon g7x
awesome video as usual guys
+Ollie smither thanks! Glad to know you're still following our adventure!
of course i am love you guys
This video is nice as adventure video... as travel tip, I think I need to clarify so many thing.
I'm not familiar with the South (Koh Tao is a place that most Thai feel meh... except for diving which Andaman Sea is a lot better) so I can't comment about that bus. The general rule though, you want to catch the public or private but regulated bus which will leaving from designate directional bus station. Those Khaosan buses are usually a rip-off. In fact, unless you really like that partying style... Don't do anything related to Khaosan. I will give you a bad impression about Bangkok.
Also, Sleeper train to Chiangmai will usually get fully booked like weeks or even months in advance. Try booking low-cost flight from Don Muang is probably a lot better as there are so many flight between DMG and CNX. Tbh, for Thai people, low-cost flight is the way to go. It's usually cheaper than sleeping train anyway unlike those overpriced legacy Airline in the state.
The girl in the background at 1:25 has me dying lmfao
watching them all so many who is with me ? day 6 now
Hey, Guys, Nice video.. I am Pratyush's fiancé, he said that you guys are really 'Perfect couple' after watching some of ur videos.. I certainly admit it.. hehe.. thanks for videos
+Lalita Das Aww! We're so grateful that you and your fiance are following along with our adventure! When's the wedding?
+Kara and Nate maybe nxt year.. it's depends on him..
+Kara and Nate yeah.. hopping to get married in nxt year becoz this year I have lots of work to do to make our married life happy..
+Pratyush Ghosh keep up the good work! Best of luck saving up for the wedding!
Bangkok - Chiang Mai I have taken it both ways by Train and Bus over a dozen times.......
Ridiculously photogenic traveling couple.
Hahaha we appreciate the love! :)
You can fly for about $20. If it’s Bangkok air. You get lounge & hot food even in economy
What size/how many litres were your back packs? Also, were you able to store them safely on your travels?
what do y'all recommend doing when traveling to a country where they don't speak english..do you use a translation app or what?
Download google translate and in it - download the language pack required. Then you can even take a photo of text and it will try to translate

Please do more travel tip videos!
U sweet hubby away bring here coffee to her
Oooh... is that baked Cha siu bao @ 5:49? If so, that is one of my favorite things ever. Baked sweet Chinese pork buns. Yummm....😋😋
Omg I love those things. Oh and you only posted this 13 hours ago... cool lol. I've had a lot of those in my lifetime but I don't think those are Cha siu baos... Unfortunately.
I love them too! I had a few at a food truck several months back, and I have become obsessed. I've literally been dying for them ever since, so I guess I was just _hoping_ that's what they were.
And I just found Kara & Nate's channel right before New Year's. I'm starting at the beginning because I literally can't. stop. watching. :-)
It's not difficult to make it, yeast + flour, meat then steam it 😊
3rd class reminds me of when I had a seat in 3rd class to go from Sydney to Adelaide on the Indian Pacific. 25 hours :D For the reverse route, I took the bus and changed in Melbourne.
Ha! That’s exactly what it was like going to the Gillis islands- 3 hours there (headwind) in a ridiculous tiny boat.. and 1 hour back with the fast boat. I was unfortunately sick going to the Gillis island…don’t recommend! 😂😂
😊😊😊😊😊😊
Yeah I would've risked the $40 rather have missed the train than have to sit in those seats for 14 hours.
loving your vlogs. where else are you planning to travel to?
+happipooh you can view our travel schedule through may on our website at karaandnate.com/. Thanks for watching!
Kara and Nate, I really love your videos and your unbelievable trip. I can't stop to watch your videos since I found your guys. I'm a Asian lives in Virginia, I can't image that I will travel the way as you guys do. How did you deal with the over charge taxi driver? did you pay the 250?
+Kenny Yu Thank you for watching! :) We just gave him what we had, he was definitely adding a "tourist tax" ;)
Is there a second part to this journey as I can’t find it
Do y’all recommend backpacks for traveling in Thailand??
this is probably asked a thousand times but hey what kind of backpacks are you guys using?
was there a toilet on the bus going back to bangkok ?
I may have just gotten off at stop during the 14 hours and waited for a train with a better seats yikes
3rd Class Train, Nate you got to make a decision! I think the 3rd class might be very hot without air-condition, does it? And the traditional train looks very loud noise, can you sleep?
+Manus Roj it actually got pretty cool during the middle of the night with all of the window down. I got very little sleep during the 14 hour ride. It was impossible to get comfortable on the benches.
Did you stay at Poseidon Resort in Ko Tao?
14 hours on that train I would have went insane. I probably would have just got a hotel and went the next day on the good part of the train. But that is just me.
Did you ever try voice translate for cab driver etc?
Oh Dear !! from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by third class train...
+waytaka k.junpan yea... that wasn't exactly plan lol but we survived! We're heading back to Bangkok after Chiang Mai, and we'll definitely book ahead for the the second class sleeper car!
14 hours in 3rd class??? That's nuts!
CR7 doppelganger 😄
+Suhaili Ramliee haha I've been getting that a lot lately. I'll take it as a compliment!
Pretty sure it's called a rest stop😂
Yeah, I don't get why Kara thought the stops were strange. At least they're not any more strange than the stores out in the middle of nowhere that you find in the US!
What's the brand and model of your backpacks?
Osprey
Ps I think I stayed in the same place too when I was in Koh tao
bad choice to choose the train without bed. It's a long long way and the seat is terrible.
Guy behind you on the bus looks miserable you keep vlogging!
11:35 when the mask trend started being “under the nose” like it does any good😳🙄
14 hour train ride in third class ? Not a chance. Poor planning all around on this one. Shoulda had a hotel booked and travelled the next day....
Small 3rd class train seat, hahaha
Those people are telling to advertise or bring people in to buy there products that's why they yell and there saying the price of the item how much per pound.
12:47 Extremely rude to put your foot up like that in Thailand.
Alert! creepy old man behind Kara on the bus. He seems to want this vlog to be Kara and Nate and Creepy Old Man
Too tiring for the two Ásia se don.t see It but climate is bad.
If the driver overcharges you now in this year he will be severely punished!!
Bus stop in no where S for the bus driver comision n free food
Love your editing! Great video. TL Travel just left Chiang Mai to go in the opposite direction haha. I can't wait to see more of your videos & would love if you'd check out my channel and sub if you enjoy as well (you can never have too much travel in your life!) Keep traveling safe!
+TL Travel thanks! Kara gets all the credit for the editing! I just watched your ice castle video! We've always wanted to do that! Bummer we missed each other! It would have been cool to meet up.
The ice castle was pretty cool! I much prefer the beaches over the snow though :P haha
+TL Travel so does Kara, that's probably why we've never been lol
I LOVE your vlogs! But I gotta say count me into "It's worth risking wasting $40 to make sure you have a sleeper car" camp. Oy! This looked MISERABLE.
we just went to Thailand too... Check out our videos too! nice video!
Lots of bad luck, ball n chain can't make a decision good thing Nate knows how to use his brain
May I ask what your Heights are? Thank you
your gf is so cute :3
Sinee Yoobamrung they’re married
