- ERP and HCM implementations often take longer than expected. In fact, this happens more often than most in the industry would like to admit.
The fact of the matter is that change is hard, and the difficulty of change involved in any ERP or HCM implementation takes time. Forget about cloud solutions, easy-to-use user interfaces, “no training” software, and other industry clichés - ERP and HCM software is the relatively easy part of a transformation. The change itself is difficult.
In this video I explain how to accurately estimate an ERP or HCM implementation time and duration that makes sense for your organization. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but the framework outlined in the video will help you tailor a vendor's proposed implementation project plan to fit your unique needs.

Some variables that I can add are level of organisation commitment and level of experience and expertise for the internal project team. If the organisation is committed and be able to make decision and clear roadblocks quickly, the timeline will be shorter. If the organisation has gone through similar transformation before, the ERP program will be smoother. Great perspectives and another great video! Thanks Eric.
Good points about past transformation experience, Robin. Thank you for the feedback!
Very refreshing and great summary. I’m going through an implementation right now and experiencing all of these issues mentioned and managing the SI partners proposal vs client’s expectations. It’s a tricky one to manage from a PM perspective.
Thank you for the feedback! I agree with your observations.
A topic well-covered. I'm guilty as described at the vendor 'sales' side, however our team always walkthrough the proposed project plan with our customers and highlight the assumptions we've made and highlight items that they need to check and perform due diligence. We do this with a fine balance that will not delayed the contract signature. As we need recurring successful projects from our customers and word of mouth testimonials, we do have a stake in customers' success.
