  • Many of us have experienced an inability to sustain our train of thought, difficulty focusing, the feeling like you’re living in a daze, and other types of brain fog. So what causes brain fog? The key insight is that your brain is not just some object sitting on the top of your shoulders. Your brain is an organ that’s connected to everything else happening in your body. And fixing your brain starts with fixing your body. When it comes to brain fog, that usually means attending to your gut health. ⁣

    In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating brain fog. They explain why brain fog is so inextricably linked to gut health and how brain fog can be triggered by a range of things from diet to allergies to autoimmune conditions to environmental toxins and much, much more.⁣

    Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣

      The average person believes they are eating healthy… true health is not what most people think! Are you eating sweet potatoes? They are a starch and can cause mucus in your brain = brain fog! Are you eating white rice? Nuts? Unsoaked nuts in the wrong body can cause brain fog! Not all bodies/ guts/ brains are equal! We can all be affected differently! So what is healthy for me might not be healthy for you ✨

If you keep up with the latest health information you likely will know more than your physician in many areas.

    Great episode!! I love 'tincture of time!'
    My daughter, her family and i went gluten free 14 years ago, after she did genetic testing, and found we had genes predisposing us to gluten sensitivity.
    Her issues included adult acne, anxiety and depression, one of her daughters had mild seizure disorder ' these all turned around! For their skin, we also need to watch out for gluten in products.
    One of the things i noticed personally was lifting of the brain fog! As you say - it was often worst after a meal rich in gluten and dairy (lasagna and French bread at a favorite Italian restaurant would send me 💤)
    I'm watching a friend who goes off gluten periodically - and is in a 'i don't really have problems wroth gluten' phase - she's again struggling with brain fog, and in a plantar fasciitis flare up .. i suspect the gluten!

    When I was in my late 30's I had many of the symptoms discussed in this interview. I was given antibiotics for chronic sinusitis and developed severe brain fog. I was finally referred to a doc who correctly diagnosed my condition, but I remained disabled with allergies and chemical sensitivities. I wish I had heard about functional medicine because most doc's only treat symptoms with drugs or tell you you are just stressed. Dealing with the illness was the cause of my stress.

      @@user-kf7vy5yu2v First, you need to find a doc who can test you for intestinal parasites and yeast. Parasites are more common than one thinks. I was treated to kill the parasite (an amoeba) and to control the yeast overgrowth. Recovery requires a complete change in lifestyle. I had to change my diet to only organic safe foods, create a chemical free living space at home and find an environment relatively unpolluted. I spent a lot of time outdoors away from traffic and people. My recovery was a slow process. The body will heal itself given the opportunity to do so. I also had my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with safe alternative.

    Brain fog is caused by sulphites, nitrites and other preservatives that are increasingly present in the highly processed, factory based foods that compete for space on the supermarket shelf. Beer and wine are also full of sulphites. A big problem is getting the treatment across the blood brain barrier. I have had a lot of improvement after “sucking” liposomal glutathione at the beginning of the day. It doesn’t taste very nice but it increases energy production in the glial cells that are detoxifying the brain.

      How do you fix it?

    • @KellyBtech
      @KellyBtech 2 года назад +2

      @@vernaschuler6250 It depends on what's causing it. You may have to try multiple doctors to get diagnoses. I have at least two issues with my brain. Two different doctors from two different states found each one. 1) Candida infestation (I tried to bomb it out of my gut with various old school natural remedies and it backfired on me. I didn't realise until weeks or months afterward that if you conduct a parasite cleanse wrong that they can scatter and travel to other parts of the body. In my case it seems they went to my brain, my left leg (which I had a case of drop foot in not long before), my bladder and possibly near my left bicep(guessing on that one). 2) I've also been diagnosed with a bacterial overgrowth. Doc has me on Oregano Oil(extract from leaf), a good multivitamin, some special supplements and Betaine HCL. There may be other, undisclosed issues as well. It's not just brain fog either. I have a list of brain related issues that have me in various states of disability which makes any attempts to help my employer impractical. Besides that it leaves me dependent on others to guide me through the FMLA and other relative program paperwork application process. It's another life form competing for my brain cavity and as far as it feels, it may actually be feeding on my brain. I don't know, but it seems like just about every day I have a very unpleasant, debilitating feeling in my brain. Often after a meal. All this to say; please be careful and research how to properly treat any gut flora imbalance you may or may suspect you have. You don't want to feel this horrible thing. Find a pro who can guide you back to proper gut flora balance & function.

    • @KellyBtech
      @KellyBtech 2 года назад +2

      @@vernaschuler6250 Oh yeah, the treatment the other doc has me on for Candida is a supplement called Arteriozyme which is an enzyme that cleans the circulatory system of the Candida dead bodies. Apparently, a build-up of dead candida can cause all kinds of brain problems too. He didn't say, but I'm guessing that it also kills live candida. Otherwise I would need to take an additional supplement for that purpose.

I also have a sluggish gallbladder so I add Bilex if I have eaten a lot of fat. Sometimes I take Apple Cider Vinegar before a meal. All of this helps my whole body so much better than any of the purple pills (Proton-pump inhibitors) with no side effects.

    another cause of brainfog might be 'FMO3 dysbiosis'.
    Maybe 50%+ carry 1 FMO3 variant.
    sub-FMO3 ppl tend to have a trimethylamine-dysbiosis, which alters diet choline.
    Also FMO3 seems to be 1 of the redox phase 1 enzymes, but ignored currently.
    ppl carrying 2 or more FMO3 variants tend to be at risk of a transient stink issue, metabolic body odor, indicating they are pretty toxic.
    Cleveland Heartlab and P&G are working on a TMA-blocker for the CVD market.
    Maybe that will also be a therapy for FMO3-dysbiosis. We will see.

    • @TheCalmwaves
      @TheCalmwaves 4 года назад

      @@user-kf7vy5yu2v unfortunately the diet choline gets altered by the tma-microbes in the gut. more diet choline means more trimethylamine.
      A choline blood status study would show us if this theory was true.
      If it was, currently the person would probably need to take e.g. a choline injection.
      In the near future ... P&G (via Cleveland Heartlab product) will be selling a tma-blocker supplement, which blocks the bacteria 'eating' the choline. Hopefully that will be the answer.
