- 1905 Darracq 200HP land speed record car seriously sideways at Goodwood
The 'engine on wheels' attacks the Festival of Speed hillclimb with some gusto
It makes me so happy to see these old cars actually driven hard instead of sitting in a showroom their entire life
amen
Until they crash :'(
But lets wish luck to any of These ;)
@@fiffbo Just build them again.
They were brought in this world to be thrashed not worry about being all original. Sometimes the historical value can take a back seat to getting wicked on the asphalt. I'd be proud to see my cars tearing it up a hundred years from now lol
@@fiffbo cars like this can be easily rebuilt as it basic engineering. Theres still fabricators ect about who can do stuff like this. It may not be original but they were designed to be used its a testament to the people who built them originally
Amen!❤️
back when the only safety equipment was goggles and a large mustache.
6 ft. long scarf
Funniest thing ever!
and some posh clothing
DrahcirSmada good times!
@Gibbon skills is safety lols
Steering column pointed right at your heart ensures a no-fuss gentlemanly death.
Power steering: No
Steering Power: *YES*
Strong arming. Once coming home from a job in a rod rig, tandom drive and the power steering went. I was sitting passenger and it took two of us to steer it an hour and half home.
Faster you go, easier the steering gets
@@adamsmith5913 yup. Just gotta keep them wheels spinning. My cousins old Saturn had no power steering, you had to be a buff guy to drive that thing when it was just crawling, but as soon as you got some speed it became super easy, and you could really feel the road through the wheel. But no thanks to driving a big rig without power steering, hell no...
People with 100 year old cars: "don't touch it you might break something"
Owners of the Darracq 200: *GAS GAS GAS IM GONNA STEP ON THE GAS*
If I owned this thing I would ask that was played over the PA while I did my run
@@Jack-hg1hq you wouldn't be able to hear it 😂😂😂😂😂
TONIGHT TONIGHT TONIGHT
That's what it was built for
@@alexanderswander8176 Super cars are built to go fast and people still barely drive them.
Goodwood: "F1 cars are dangerous"
Darracq: "Hold my beer"
It should be "Hold my cognac"
The modern f1 cars are basically as wide as this little track
Alexander Power yeah, f1 cars are way bigger than they look
Ít should be " Hold my fuel "
@@MetoFulcurm Ha, the driver has the hyuuge steering wheel to hang on to, he's safe - sort of- but the poor co-.pilot seems to be grabbing the petrol tank cap for his life...
So fucking awesome!!! This is a completely insane vehicle and I'm so happy that the guy who owns it is just as nuts. 200HP is science fiction for 1905, but think about how much *torque* this monster engine must be producing...
Well, this data was apparently never published, but I was able to find out that the 200HP was geared to do 90MPH/1,000rpm in high (2-speed axle). Its land speed record run clocked in at 122.5MPH, which would put it at 1,360rpm; just a smidge below the 1,400pm redline indicated on a tachometer it used to have (removed during latest restoration).
200HP @ 1,400 rpm = 750lb-ft of torque (HP x 5252 / rpm). That means peak torque was easily over *800lb-ft* since it would have come at a lower engine speed.
Now think about that fact while you watch some guy driving it sideways with ancient drum brakes on the rear wheels only!
doctor zaius best comment I’ve read in while.
AutobahnWars There is a small fence mounted on the chassis. this car has no Diff. so that explains the drifting in corners in a way. He is still racing this "flying chassis" .The steeringwheel is super direct 30 degrees max.
I thought it had much higher torque than that. It could pull its 200 hp at ludicrously low rpm. I had read it was something stupid like 1750 torque...
Also, 1526 cui of V8!
For who has the biggest comparisons, go home mountain motors!
Thank you very much. Yes, what a skillful and brave guy, the driver.
I've watched this video a dozen or more times. That thing is SICK for 1905! Can you imagine only seeing horses your whole life then watching this beast go over 100mph!!!?? Nuts.
I'm glad they put on a show so people realize just how quick some of those old cars really were.
Well, they would've seen trains, some of which were pretty fast even back then. But I get your point. What a phenomenal vehicle.
Now THIS is how you enjoy a historic race car. YOU FUCKING RACE IT!
MY god I love seeing, hearing it driven properly. Seeing it sideways, driven by someone who's not afraid of the thing...even if they have every right to be afraid of that thing. Bravo, godspeed, and let's hope you have many more fun runs in historic racers!
You just took my words!
"Phew! Still alive" - passenger, probably.
There was more danger in that lap than in the last five F1 seasons.
This is one of the best GFOS vids ever.
Co-driver: "So what's the plan?"
Driver: "I'm just gonna farken' send it!"
Co-Driver: "I'm just gonna hang-on tight & pray"
Ah yes, doctor-assisted suicide sure has come a long way.
HAAHH! Is there a better way to go? These guys have balls of steel :-)
LOL Brilliant! Simply brilliant.
How in the hell would anyone disliked this? A 200 hp 1905 cage is damn impressive, if you ask me.
I don’t think cage is the right word though.
It amazes me thinking this machine existed before HMS Titanic
The design of the Titanic has been around way long before this chassis of a car came about
@@hybridShinx and the internal combustion engine was a few decades old by then.
RMS or SS not HMS but yeah amazing to think about. I bet she's had a few scrapes in the past 115 years but it's a bit easier to fix a slide in to a hay bale than stesming into an ice burg!
Indeed, RMS Titanic as in Royal Mail Steamer. Not HMS, as she wasn't a naval vessel. But yeah this was astonishing to watch!
RMS Titanic. HMS is reserved for warships.
Built and driven by men, who also;
Went up in airplanes made of plywood and cloth, without navigation or any chutes.
Went over the top out of trenches, straight into machine gun and artillery fire.
Climbed up the riggings of a windjammer during a hurricane.
Attempted to climb the Himalaya's dressed in tweed suits.
And were lucky to see 30....
With the exception of those who fathered children and grandchildren; e.g. us.
They must have had incredible 'safe spaces' and 'support networks' to get them through the anxiety! ;-)
I wonder if any of them whined about their “anxiety acting up“
@@EATSLEEPDRIVE2002 they just killed themselves instead much manlier
quite simply one of the best things I have ever seen, makes me grin like a cheshire cat
If only the people who first saw it in 1905 knew that in 115 years it would still be tearing down a track!
The sense of speed while driving/riding that thing must be intense.
group B cars: we are the most dangerours cars ever made
Darracq: hold my beer
"Hold my Wine" or "Hold my Cognac", it is French hu! ^^
@@clio2rsminicup the Joke it's still work with beer, wine or cognac

Ok, that was hands-down the most awesome thing that I've seen on the internet today
that was truly great to watch live, I thought the passenger was going to fall out!
My blood is boiled up while I have seen this video :D :D
OMG OMG
A wehicle from 1905 what has an owner who can drive it like the devil.
Whatta pure, strong, genuin, sound.. :) :) :))))))
Sound...(quiet)...2nd gear..Sound...
Check the number plate at the first turn :D :D :D
This video has chance for the "Car video of the year" award I think.
Amazing car with amazing people.
Thanks for upload!
Balázs Pethő : D
Loos like a complete death trap to me.
If they roll that they are a a dead man.
I think its very easy to handle.
Looks like a bmw e30 on wintertires with stock suspension.
@@maxmoritz5065 Hahahahahaha :D :D There is not e30 with 205 hp except M3 :D
@@balazspetho5070AgroGO iam not talking about engine . More about the handling.
The small tires on the car and the time he has for stabilizing and handling the car gives me that look its very easy to handle.
But one mistake and your gone
This very cool big pile of parts went 122 mph on Daytona beach in 1906 & this guy drove it like he stole it. How times have changed, I'm off to Bonneville for Speed Week 2016.
No.
A car with this engine went 122mph. This is what is normally termed a re-creation. A fantastic re-creation but just that. And Mark Walker is a brilliant driver. But please let's not continue the myth that this is THE 1905 Darracq.
Again no.
Please, do your research and you will find a magazine article that records the previous owner 'recovered the engine and a section of the chassis' (Not - repeat not - a complete chassis or a car). A recreation/reconstruction took place using period parts but not from the actual car. It was sold at auction to the present owner who has done a lot of work on it - and drives it extremely well. But it is NOT the "1905 Darracq record car" as such.
Peter Bloggs do you have a look for the article? I'd like to read it, thanks.
They only made one Darracq v8, for the purpose of breaking speed records. So the only period parts they might be able to get would have been the parts of very same car.
I can't explain how much I love that he drove it like that! Well done!!
This is what I truly admire about our European brothers, they know how to properly treat antique cars. No 3 mph putting around show grounds for them. "Hey mate, how's 'bout we pour the coals to this car?" Fantastic.
To see this old skeleton warrior called a car hitting120 mph or more is one hell of a sight to behold!
Such brave men!
Back when the only safety you had was not being strapped into the thing.
It was generally considered better to be not strapped in so as to be thrown clear in the event of an accident as these cars had a propensity to catch fire ! Not nice to be trapped under a burning wreck.
They were right to want to be thrown clear. Not just for fire but everything was so rigid that all the kinetic energy from impact would be dumped into the soft squishy drivers if the were strapped in. Thrown out all that you have to worry about is the momentum in your body not 4 tons of iron.
That was amazingly fast. That driver really showed the world what that old car was capable of. Bravo!
Wow, for 1905 back when there still a lot of horses and buggies around people must've marveled at seeing such a vehicle move so quickly, Goodwood is truly where automotive legends live on and never cease to run!
That car is incredible. Sounds real nice for such an ancient V8. Thanks for posting such a great piece of automotive history.
That Power Slide!! Those guys have BALLS!
This is absolutely amazing, 115 yrs old and so bloody fast! Lovely sound too!
Always surprises me how much ass these old death traps can haul. And you know the tires back in the day were barely bladders that held air. I found a still picture once of one from the turn of the century getting serious air.
Love the drifting...
That was freaking awesome.the aerial shot in the beginning where you could see the valves opening and closing was so cool.
1905 - 1970 lovely time of cars
I searched "Goodwood Insane" and was led here.
I was not disappointed.👍
"back in my day, the car was actually fun to drive"
Absolute madman in that car, your footage of the event is top notch! I can't believe his balls fit on that thing
Can you imagine seeing this in 1905?!
This must have blown some minds.
passenger: I really have to go to the bathroom.
Driver: Here comes the 1st corner.
passenger: Never mind.
what a Ride experience !! and what a Drive Skills !! best Goodwood video i have seen ever im in love with this old cars
That beast has 200 hp and 750 pounds of torque... another French masterpiece...
115 years old...still more powerful than my Ypsilon 🤣
German Retro Guy Yes, the 2009 model. Still proud of it...after all, it’s a Lancia
German Retro Guy Yes, but the most recent version of it, after the 2006 restyling
I am like !!?!!!!
A pleasure to see an ancient car being used for what it was meant for!
Full restoration, properly maintained, and driven to the limits. That is how machines should be preserved, not gathering dust in a museum.
Maybe car museums SHOULD be vintage tracks. We're doing museums all wrong.
The creativity has been regulated out of modern racing. Bikes are the same, just bicycles with engines, it could all have been so different and more interesting and exciting.
Good vid. Ta for posting.
The best car and driver in the FOS 2015 Festival of Speed hillclimb!!
Here's a hot rod for the ages...
A big v8 strapped to a couple frame rails strapped to what are essentially motorcycle wheels. Brakes? It's designed to go, not stop!
In 1905 people must've thought this thing was the second coming. Amazing!
Some of us still do !!
One of the most entertaining and surprising runs I’ve ever seen at Goodwood. Buddy needed Pampers.
The definition of "hang on for dear life".
The way he was driving I thought there was money at stake on the fastest time.
A fossil of a sports car from 1905 raced in the 21st Century is a breath of fresh air! What a sight! Lots of torque from a gem of an engine as reliable as a locomotive! The great wyrm grandfather of the Lotus 7 and Ariel Atom!
By far the best hill climb run I've ever seen at goodwood. To drive a car that old like that takes some major balls
Stunning Gorgeous Car! The Gran Mother of Alfa Romeo....Bravissimo Driver!
That is a beautifully crafted machine, it's purpose inherent in it's form.
And that was an unbelievable run... super quick, courageous.
You gotta love the flex on the chassis and the soft leaf springs!!
This gave me chills like I've never had from a youtube video.
A very distinct blend of bravery and insanity.......love it!
Wow that was really amazing. I must say the sawing away with the steering wheel reminds me of F.Gonzales in the Ferrari in the '50s
Mad Men! Love how mechanical that motor is!
i love how simply leaning can change its center of gravity, amazing
Lived in the same village when I was younger as the driver who would take various cars out of the same era for test drives, my mate's and I would be sitting on a bench opposite his drive and you heard them rolling down then he would be foot down and off down the road with all the noise, bloody brilliant.
Reading some other comments on the Darracq's restoration put the torque from this 1550 cubic inch V8 at 950 ft-lbs! In some of the other videos, you can see the frame twist as Mark taps the throttle.
thats just to cool,to get that much power from such ancient technology is crazy, its all about that torque!
Absolutely amazing... a chassis with a big engine, 2 blokes and bicycle tyres. That's it. Amazing.
Everyone: Wow, this is a pre-war race car, with such technology that was the most advanced of it's time, and is over a century old.
Driver: *Peace was never an option*
The thing actually handles!
Well "handles" in a loose meaning of the word.
The thing has to be manhandled to handle ?
Well, yes! Actually it does look like it handles more than decently. It seems well balanced when it drifts under power. The engine is well behind the front axle so it’s not that nose heavy.
What an old ripper! no roll cage OMG .love it love it love it!
Congrats to these two gents, the driver and the ballast weight! You've gotta have balls of titanium and a death wish to drive this thing. The power to weight ratio is practically thrown out the door. And people thought drifting was invented in Japan. Glad to see this thing actually being driven hard as it was intended instead of rotting away in a meseum. Awesome vid!
Thanks RUclips algorithm! I Love old Cars!!
The flapping plate in the front made it look like they were pedaling, lol! Awesome car!
That's the most intense crazy af batshit cray driving I've seen in years.
The torque these monster's make at such low RPM's is just astounding! Freaking awesome to see it putting to work!
Some of the finest wheel work in all of motorsport history
Those two men got balls of steel. And a death wish too, but - to be honest - that's what really makes a great show ! Staggering to watch and kudos to the driver and the fuel-pump-guy.
200hp and 1905... That's impressive! Great to see these kind of cars driven hard :D
Absolutely terrifying and wonderful, all at the same time!
WOW! Very amazing and simply fantastic. Brilliant driving. Because of the oldtimers worth I would never allow me to do this (and probably miss a lot of fun!?).
Thanks a lot for sharing.
I love everything about this!!
The sound of the car and the swaying of the driver and co-pilot cracked me up xD
I'm glad somebody is still willing to take the risk and have the balls to drive that car exactly the way it was driven 115 years ago!
It only had two forward gears.
I never saw the car in person, but I can only guess the gear positions on the quadrant were marked "Go" for 1st, and _"GO, GO, GO!!!"_ for 2nd...
Amazing fast, great to see the race car being used and enjoyed
This is fast!!! Best video of Goodwood.
OH MY GOD!!
THIS IS AMAZING!!!
THE BEST CAR OF THE FESTIVAL!
Ken block should try this thing out
Elian Hasanaga He'd probably want worthless safety features like a windscreen, doors, or a roof. What's next, a place to put your purse?
killerskillet also like 5 other cars so he can wreck a shit load of tires and a few years to of practise so he can make anothe 5 min gymkhana
id rather not see him drive a piece of history into a tree thankyou very much
You are so right
ken wouldnt know how to drive this beast.
Car is half as old as America and he still drives it flat out. Beautiful!
North or south America? ;)
Amazing how fast those actually were.
Everyone is going on about the power, which is no doubt impressive but I’m just as impressed by how it handled the corners on little more than a motorcycle sized tire.
The original white knuckle ride!
So it's a one seater + a removable counterweight, clever.
A reminder that Darracq built this thing just because he wanted to see how much faster he could go. He basically did it for _fun_ .
Looks like he's having fun and we get to see what history looked like before it was sanitized.
Juste énorme!!! Tout à la glisse dans les virages, excellent!!
Absolute madlad tribal driving
Under that helmet, believe it or not, is the very handsome and brave Mr. Toad of Toad Hall.
That thing is mental! . Hats off to the man driving who could have easily had a date with the grim reaper.
Summed up nicely by the man in the crowd: 'It's really going, isn't it? Bloody Hell!'
When your granny driving you to kindergarten, but you forgot your teddy home
ah its sounds so mechanical like the raw kind clunky and just beautiful for me to hear
