Saw this car being started viewed from the left side. When she fires, the engine rocked violently to the right, fired up and spit fire like a red dragon! AWESOME!!!
I would imagine a compression release lever is there somewhere. When rotated it pushes down on the exhaust rocker, lifting the exhaust valve off its seat a bit. Old Caterpillar engines with the pop motor starter had those. Even at -50°C you could get the pop engine running and let it warm up a bit. Meanwhile check fluid levels, fill fuel tank and release compression. Starter gear in low and engage the clutch. Now the diesel is turning over without fuel injection and the starter engine exhaust ran through a pipe in the intake manifold to help preheat the intake air. Then you could sit in the truck and have a coffee from your thermos. This is getting the thick oil warmed up and pumping. Now go out and change to high gear in the starter and go have another coffee. After about 10 minutes more or so the diesel is loosening up, so you can climb up and push the throttle lever ahead to idle fuel position. The diesel will start poping in the exhaust and blowing smoke rings. Eventually it will kick the starter bendix out. Turn the starter engine fuel off and shift to neutral. Idle the starter down and let it run out of fuel to let the float drop and not bounce and flood the starter engine. The float bouncing would hammer the needle and seat out. Left the diesel warm up some more before hoing to work.
