- In 1975 Christopher Lee (1922-2015) was filming 'To the Devil, A Daughter' at the (EMI) Elstree Studios, which are North of London. Through our EMI contact we managed to arrange an interview that took place in Hammer House which was then located within the studio grounds. Films clips have been removed to ease copyright problems. The interviewer is Mark Caldwell and it was shot (originally) on 16mm film, in black and white. This is the first time it has been seen since that time.
Please note, that the many years that have passed by, have not been kind to some videotapes and you'll notice more oxide dropouts than usual on this recording!

People quite often speak and sing in unnatural range for them. As it can be perceived by members of society as quite offensive if a low or high voice is used loudly. To not show character - people mimic. The middle range.
When person with a deep voice feels stress or tenceness (as on the interview), or talks with an intention to be polite - they go higher into the middle range.
That uncontious and contious behaviour is so strong, that deeper voices tend to not know their natural range pretty deep into life. One does not look further then bass singers: Peter Steele, Mark Lanegan, Nick Cave to name a few, their biography stories of voice are the same. Paraphrasing: I did not understood or accepted I had deep voice, so I sung in my higher range all the time and was puzzled why others can sing and I can not and why with that terrible singing I hoarse my throat all the time.
And to the older years the person becomes more seasoned and so biological voice comes naturally.
Because of that even such a deep voice actor can talk much higher in register, maybe to say many words in the short time, it may be nerves, subcontious, consciousness or politeness.
Aging takes its toll, although Christopher Lee's aged voice was just epic as a mauve folker.
A combination of age and smoking, but it is remarkable.
His voice is like a fine aged wine. Red of course haha.

He was a youthful 53 here, you could tell he was going to live well into his 90s.
Interviewer did a fine job of asking good questions and then getting out of the way while Lee spoke at great length at the speed of light.
From the vast interviews I have seen Lee has been a man who was always highly respected by his interviewers, when he spoke everyone would just stay quiet and all he says just makes you want to listen more and more about all his stories and memoirs. Surely missed, a magnificent Actor who blessed us with such amazing movies and performances. His career spans over so many generations of people there isn't a household that doesn't recognise him either as Dracula, Scaramanga, Saruman, Lord Summerisle, Count Dooku, Pastor Gallwells, Alquazar, Mohammed Ali Jinnah
(who he mentioned countless of times is his proudest role he ever did along with Lord Summerisle).
Amazing man, intellectual, knowledgable, remembered every single person he worked with and had a story to tell about everyone. Just watching his interviews is mesmerizing. Glad that I lived in the generation where I enjoyed him from Dracula up until his passing.
Lee was largely autodidactic, meaning his extensive knowledge of various skills and subjects were mostly self-taught. He said in his autobiography that math ("maths" in the UK text) was his weakness, and he was bullied a lot in boarding school. So, it's even more inspiring to see how he took charge of his own learning.
I never knew Ian Fleming was his cousin, wow. I could listen to Sir Christopher Lee speak all day, very articulate and so honest, love this man !!!

Sir Christopher Lee is the prince of horror movies, he was also the greatest Count Dracula actor and no one will ever matched that, plus, this is a super awesome interview talking to Christopher Lee in this 1975 gem!!

Curiously enough, I was watching "100 Years of Horror" from 1996 recently and it seems that during the intervening 21 years between this interview and that production, his views on Witchcraft, Demonology and Satanism evolved to become significantly more historically informed and less reactionary.

I suspect that he would have sounded much deeper in the room on this day, but this is a poor quality taped copy of a broadcast which itself was heavily compressed.

It must be the sound on this video. I have never heard his voice so high and thin. His voice was different in The Man with the Golden Gun and also the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, both of which he mentions were released before this interview . Or maybe he was just doing a different voice for fun?

The interviewer asks, rather dubiously, about the existence of black magic at 1:33 and one telling off later, probably regrets it.

That’s only a detailed response to a question. This is what interviewers are looking for, and he was undoubtedly happy that there wasn’t any dead air. Sir Christopher was one of the best raconteurs.

The Huysmans book he mentioned is called "The Dammned" in English, and I think that is what he is referring to when he talks about the appalling acts that are actually done. Huysmans (sic?) was basing the book both on his research on turn of the century French occultism, and the real life crimes of Gilles de Rais, which involved allot of black magic too. I feel a distinction must be made between, say, Chaos Magick, Thelema etc and what de Rais was up to, but he is correct that it is a historical fact that this stuff went on.

Exactly why I'm here 😂 Currently reading "Master and Apprentice", which features flashbacks to when Qui-Gon first became Dooku's Padawan, when he was just a child. Not sure exactly how old Dooku is in those scenes, but I figured I could get a better idea of what he would look and sound like, by looking at old footage of C. Lee.

He's asked if black magic is real and then pivots by misinterpreting what the question obviously meant. The interviewer wasn't asking if people have been doing rituals from dusty tomes in real life, he was asking Lee if he thinks any of that stuff actually works.
Mr. Lee misinterpreted nothing. The interviewer is asking about the rituals efficaciousness.
He answered it by explaining that exists, and he believes it

I think he's saying both of those things. Black magic has been around for a long long time. If black magic didn't work people would have abandoned it long ago. He's quite serious about this stuff and not at all being coy or dismissive about it.

Hm, I do sort of believe Christopher Lee's take on black magic/occult and the overall "evil" was part of his image, or a way to smoothen the image of the movies he performed in. He certainly was a reasonable person, which makes it unlikely for him to take on this direct, literal meaning of evil or the devil, which is a very petty way of seeing the world.

Well evil has a large range that's for sure but as for the utter bollocks of "Religion killed more people than all wars put together since the dawn of man" I don't think you've ever heard of resource shortages, or territory, or politics, or expansions, or heck even slaves! Lee likely did have a broad, somewhat fantastical understanding of the occult, but he also had a lot of teaching and conversations with occultist figures and religious 'experts'
Hollywood is the epicenter of Satanism. Celebrities, Musicians, Actors, Comedians etc are all in secret societies. So they'd definitely be the ones to know. Many movies show you glimpse of what really goes on. They didn't learn that knowledge through research either..
Incorrect Christopher Lee was in WWII and was a spy agent. That man saw insane things. He also has a very wide knowledge of paranormal and metaphysical subjects. You shouldn't be so quick to dismiss him.
