  • Today we'll show you the detailed installation of our Starlink Pivot Roof Mount that we installed on our 5th Wheel RV. We also review the other mounting options that are available on the Starlink website and we'll show you how our friends from the RUclips channel @GrandAdventure used the Starlink pole adapter to attach their dishy to their RV ladder.
    This is the 4th in a series of videos that we have produced while traveling the Western Unite States and living off grid for in our 5th wheel RV. This is where we will extensively test the Starlink system in each location to find out just how well it will work for RVers and other digital nomads. In our future videos, we'll post updates on the performance in each location, how we’ll deal with obstruction issues, further details of the Starlink app, setting up cellular to make phone calls via Wi-Fi and much, much more. Always do a reboot from within the Starlink App on the wifi and the router once a day. That will dramatically help with speeds... Also put the dish into stow mode and then hit un stow once a day and that will also force to dish to find a more preferred satellite which helps the speeds big time. I am in a waitlist area with the RV vesion and my speeds are always up near 70-100Mb download. Get 2-3 mesh units as well.... Huge difference !! AWESOME!!!

We still run it this same way even after several months. I thought I would do it a different way for a more permanent run, but, this is just as easy and I don't have to worry about the cord or end being damaged by leaving it up on top of the rig while traveling.

    Hey - great video - thanks so much! I was wondering though, if they didn't leave the higher "Sides" to allow water to drain out from under the mount? When you put butyl tape there, that cut off the water from being able to drain there. I saw you sealed under the pivot mount as well (directly under the pivot), but what if the pivot itself leaks? Wouldn't it just be OK to leave the butyl tape off the sides, leave those sides "Higher" so they can drain any water that leaks through those holes under the pivot or the pivot itself?
    I am also wondering about cable routing. We just bought a Class-C and are planning on having StarLink for Internet. Other questions are answered below, like does it hurt to turn the unit off overnight and so on. And, I assume it's not a problem to turn it off for longer periods when RV is not in use and so on. We have a crowded roof on ours, it's only a 24' Winnebago, so we may opt for the ladder mount, that seems pretty handy, and might even lend itself to being able to disconnect the unit and take it down for storage (and anti-theft) when it's not in use. Avoids the issues above of drilling, taping, sealing rooftop.
    Thanks!

    • @EddieAtLarge
      @EddieAtLarge  Год назад

      Hey Scotty, glad you enjoyed the video! I'm certain that they did leave the sides higher for the purpose of drainage as you stated and I did initially place butyl tape in that area by mistake, however, after further consideration, I decided that it would be better to completely seal the mount both inside and out. If I would have left the sides and center open the way they intended, the only protection the holes made by the bolts would have would be the butyl tape at the corners. If the bolts were to loosen at all, that would leave the holes vulnerable to water infiltration. The pivot post is located up above the open center area of the mount so I was able to completely fill the center void with self leveling sealant. I also removed the post before installing the sealant to make sure it got worked under the mount.
      You are correct in regards to being able to turn it off for extended periods. We do sometimes turn it off overnight when we don't have much sun to recharge via solar and it's also turned off while we move locations (usually weekly). I do prefer using the roof mount as it works well for our situation. Do you have a specific question on cable routing? We run ours through our RV "wet bay" which is where the water hose enters when on hookups and we plug the router into an outlet in our RV storage area.

  • @patriciapeters5526

    • @EddieAtLarge
      @EddieAtLarge  2 года назад

      Thanks Patricia! We take the dish down prior to traveling. It’s quick and easy to remove from the mount. We run the wire up through the hole where our water hose enters the rig when we’re on hookup and can close the hatch door without the wires being in the way. We keep the router in our 5th wheel “basement” area where there’s an outlet to plug it in. The router is powerful enough to transmit the signal throughout the rig with no problem. Hope that info helps!

      Thanks Dennis. We remove it before hitting the road. Good chance it would survive if we left it up there, but, don't want to risk damage as the unit is not made for mobile use and chances are good we would clip it off while traveling under an overpass. It's fairly quick and easy to remove and reinstall though. Starlink is working on a truly mobile unit that can be left in place on the roof of a vehicle and can be used while driving down the road, just no word on when that will be out.

    • @EddieAtLarge

      Glad you enjoyed! We take the dish down before moving and I would not recommend leaving it up there. It may handle the wind, however, there would be potential clearance issues at overpasses and low tree limbs, etc… and when hitting rough spots in the road, it may loosen the mount or cause damage to the dish. Some people are now making custom mounts by disabling the motor, cutting the back of the housing off, installing a new backing and installing the dish flat in a fixed manner on the roof. Hi Aldi, we do put it in stow mode and then remove it. Our rig is about 12' tall without the dish and we would be concerned about damaging it when going under an overpass. We also do a lot of boondocking and take the rig off road, so, another concern would be it possibly getting damaged by low hanging tree branches. The dish is very easy to remove and reinstall. Starlink also includes a dish carry bag with a shoulder strap when you order the mount which can be utilized when taking it up and down off the rig. Hope this info helps with your decision.

    We'd love to install v2 rectangular dish on the roof of our popup truck camper. When driving, with the unit powered off, we're hoping we can use the Pivot Mount to lay the dish flat on the roof (on clean, flat rubber mat to avoid scratches and reduce vibration). It would reduce wind resistance and minimize ground to top of dish clearance height.
    When arrive at camp, we'd then manually loosen the "pivot" arm and raise it to 90º; power on starlink; and let it find the satellites.
    BUT... it seems that "at rest" the dish is on a significant angle from the pipe? The Pivot Mount itself seems to come with the female mounting socket lying flat/parallel with the base(?) Can the Dish & Pipe lie flat as well?
    If not, can we replace the pipe with a shorter one that does lie flat to the dish?
    Also, how is the Dish's pipe attached to the Pivot Mount? Will it stay attached at 80mph and/or bumping on washboard roads?
    Lastly, do you see a 12V power adapter option yet (we'd rather avoid 12V - 110V - 12V wastefulness)?
    Thanks! So very exciting!

      You may get it to lay down, however, it will be at a different angle each time you "stow" it for transport as it gets stowed facing whatever direction it was last facing. So, it may be flat sometimes and angled at a different direction other times. Several other issues that you will run into are that the knob that secures the pivot mount at different angles has a plastic piece that moves the metal gear wheel. This may end up breaking over time by loosening and tightening it over and over again. Also, there is a good chance that the dish will bounce up and down in that position while driving down bumpy forest roads and get damaged. The dish clips in and is easily removed from the mount with the push of a button. I would highly recommend taking it down each time and leaving the pivot mount in the vertical position as that is what we do. Hope that info helps.

      @Homie At Large Thanks so much for your quick reply! So I guess there's no "Park" function (either software or manually) that'd move the dish back vertical (flush with the pipe)? If not, how do you store the dish and the pole (eg, sometimes the dish and pole could be 90º, with dish pointing straight up? That'd seem to be much, much hard to store than if the dish is flush with the pipe?) Can you manually move the dish to lie flat on pipe? We are in a popup truck camper, so storage space is at an ultra-premium!
      If dish does go parallel with its pipe, what's the least it could be made to stick up (off the roof) lying flush with Pivot Mount?
      As far as bouncing around, I should have mentioned that we'd strap the pipe and dish down to the roof (against a rubber pad) so it didn't bounce around. This way we can also run the cable through the roof, etc. and not mess with it as well!
      Re; plastic knob wearing out, great point. We've already been looking at replacing it with a metal one (like you find with Flagpole mounts, which use the same teeth).
      If you do another related video, it'd be great if you'd show where the pipe attaches to the back of the dish! Thanks again!

      Check out our first video at 2:22 to see the back of the dish in “stow” position. Here’s the link. ruclips.net/video/wm8IJ65dgag/видео.html That is as flat as it will get to the pole. We use the original box to transport and always put it in stow position before doing so (that’s how they ship it). Stow position also locks it in place. If you can protect it well with the rubber mat, that may work for you. Sorry, didn’t see your question about the adapter. Nothing from Starlink yet. I asked them a while back and they claim it’s in the works, but, didn’t seem like a high priority at the time.

      @@EddieAtLarge Very much appreciate your additional response! Even at 2:22 (where you're snapping pole into the tripod mount), it's really hard to see how close it'd lie flat on our roof with the pivot mount. If you get a chance to snap a photo (in pivot mount at 0º) and/or even show detail of it in the box where you stow it, it'd be a HUGE service. Thanks!

    You should not do a full seal around, because the water, possibly coming from the tube, needs to flow out

    • @EddieAtLarge
      @EddieAtLarge  Год назад

      At 5:55 I show how I also sealed inside the mount base (under the tube) to ensure water did not penetrate below the base and get trapped. I filled this area with the self leveling sealant that would seep under the base and then I completely filled the void to just under the tube (I removed the tube to do this). Any water that gets into that area will be able to drain out from the top. I decided to do this as I was concerned about water working it’s way to the bolt penetrations as the only thing protecting them was the butyl tape. If the bolts would loosen at all or there wasn’t a good seal from the tape, water may be able to leak through the roof. In my estimation, there was no other effective way to make sure water did not find its way to those locations.
