Fighting against many trends that became popular... thanks for reassuring me☺️ and I just recommended my friends to follow you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Would you be shocked if I told you it was Bob and Brad.
You mean those 2 stretches they made us do in school every day? 😣
It's most likely that they never bothered to correct it (or also didn't know how to do it) because you have to hinge from your hips and the back has to stay neutral
Government schooling at its finest. Decades behind on changing the routine in light of new contraindications.
Yup... and I've had freakin' sciatica bouts all of my adult life.
And they are still doing them today...Doh!!!
Those Stretches aren't bad It's just some higher level mobility. Many people are simply forcing themselves into it. Regressions/Simple Versions are for ordinary people.
I love how you guys just nonchalantly dump our reality upside down by educating us on a fundamental stretch actually being horrible for us. Please don't stop
They explicitly said it isn’t horrible if you do it right. Do it right.
Totally agree. I'm a yoga teacher and I did those stretches at first and my low back got so sore. I stopped doing them and instead started strength training. Feel so much better
You were not doing the stretch correctly then. You must bend from the hips and keep your back straight when bending to touch your toes. They fail in epic fashion in the video to give themselves any kind of credit.
The fact is when performed correctly touching your toes actually allows your back to fully decompress which can only otherwise be achieved by inversion.
Bone doctors, Chiropractors, are not qualified to be speaking on muscles and ligaments, else they would be another kind of doctor altogether such as a Kinesiologist. They have minimal training in this area and is limited to its role directly connected to the bones.
@@seanregehr4921 I know that now, but I did not 15 year ago.
@@seanregehr4921 They are physical therapists, which essentially serve the same function as kinesiologists to assist patients in normal, pain free movement. Kinesiologists will generally spend more time with patients actually supervising the exercises they have patients perform, but there is a lot of overlap between the two fields.
As physical therapists they are well versed in the soft tissues and not limited to bones as you suggest. Kinesiologists are not doctors either. They also stated that certainly the stretch can be performed properly, but that it isn't worth the risk as most are not mobile or knowledgeable enough to do so.
Bottom line you failed to note they acknowledged the stretch could be performed safely if done properly, and you are misinformed on the topics you spoke on with with great authority.
What the hell is a bone doctor, you mean an orthopedist or orthopedic surgeon? They diagnose and treat bone disease and injuries, and they are also experts in ligaments and tendons, as well as the muscles these tendons connect to our bones. So "bone doctors" are actually experts in muscles, tendons, ligaments, or in other words the musculoskeletal system as a whole, as their specialty is to restore normal movement to an injured patient. Pretty incredible to think that you'd have to be an expert in muscles (the things that apply forces to bones) in order to understand human movement, and diagnose and treat disorders thereof.
As for chiropractors they aren't doctors of anything, except Chiropractic "Medicine" which, is absolutely quackery, and not worth mention.
Stick to yoga.
I'm started to notice too that I spent so many years focusing on flexibility and stretching alone through yoga at home (or group lessons, but teachers often don't have the time to correct their students individually and now with covid they're not allowed to correct anymore). But with all the backpain, neckpain and pain in my wrists I need to stop yoga and start focusing on strength. Never realised how bad some of the stretches were if they're not combined with strength.
Maybe you was sore cuz your muscles wasn’t used to getting worked like that? Which is usually what happens when you are sore
I’d like to see them evaluate things gymnasts do and how that can lead to problems later in life. I’m an ex gymnast with lots of problems
Me too! So many aches & pains & creaks & pops & stiffness & mystery twinges! But I rely on these 2 "bad" back positions every day to compensate for the bad knees I got from coaching (spotting while kneeling).
Its because you're an "ex" gymnast and no longer using all of your muscles I assume. This video is only applicable to your average person who is quite unfit. There's nothing wrong with doing forward folds as a fit person.
Oh, my friends who are ballet dancers already have old people's bodies at their mid-30s!

SarahBarson Hollinger I teach to fold with bent knees. If they are bothersome then try bending your knees more, taking your feet wider, remove all or a few.

I just did that a week back....
And I'm LITERALLY bed ridden since yesterday....
It took me over 20 minutes to just stand on my feet today morning after waking up with same pain, its that bad....

These videos are awesome. The way these two converse with one another is like watching your 70 year old dad and his 70 year old best friend use the internet for the 1st time.
I want to thank you both for this video. In my stretching routine each day I was doing it all wrong. The stretch felt great during but after I suffered all day with pain and bedtime was even worse… to the point where sleep was difficult. I couldn’t figure it out because I thought I was doing it right. Yesterday, after watching your video, I changed my routine following your recommendations. No pain all day and last night I slept so much better. Bob and Brad (“the two most famous physical therapists on the internet”) you have helped me time and time again. Have you tried the hamstring ones? Also inner thigh.
I found doctors to be terrible when it comes to muscular/skeletal injuries. Physios are way better.
@@jimbobjunior. Doctors definitely don't understand muscle/tendon and skeletal issues. Even some physiotherapists or rather chiropractors don't tell you what's really wrong with you.

It's weird all these stretches and exercises from school are so harmful.
Oh yeah I remember the gym teacher pushing us and pulling us if we didn't do those stretches no pain no gain right. All those years ago and they were killing us.
When my youngest was in school and they had them doing sit-ups and she used to complain that it hurt her back just like it hurt mine. I used to tell her to tell the teacher she was doing it wrong. They never wanted to listen.
We must have been in the same gym class 😂
It's only harmful if you don't use proper form. Just like any exercise or movement, if you do it wrong you can be injured. When the wrong muscle group takes over, injury is bound to happen.
@@lauriethomas1924 The wrong muscle group? There is no wrong muscle group. It's your back that you don't want to take the brunt of that
They aren't harmful. These two goons say they are harmful - that doesn't make it true.

You guys are the best! i had a serious back injury in 2016 (herniated discs L4/L5 & L5/S1) and much of what I do today to stretch, exercise and maintain back health has come from your practical, easy-to-implement advice! I can't thank you enough.
Actually stretching is not the issue but it's the loss of muscles in the back. Strengthening the muscles will give longevity.
Strictly speaking, active stretching is bad, passive stretching is generally safe.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade it's the other way around lol. Atleast what experts would say. Personally both passive and active are fine if you don't push yourself. Many people want to be super mobile in 1 month whereas it may take 1+ year. In the process they hurt their body

I’m a yoga gal, and will never do those forward bends without a bend in my knees. As you said, terrible for the lower back.
Leslie Miller this is true ! and bend in the knees and long spine for seated forward fold as well xo
Still not good for your spine
@@dannyspitzer1267 Bob and Brad's videos are for the average person. Those of us that practice yoga, ballet, and work out regularly to have developed the strength to keep our back straight as though we were lying down can do this. Just like they said in the video. It doesnt hurt my back and I can press my face into the front of my legs. This is for people that don't have the flexibility or strength to do the forward fold properly. It's all about proper form. As soon as you have to round your back, that's when the stress on the back happens. See at 2:45 when they say that if you do it properly it won't hurt your back. Yes most people cannot. I can.
That's funny I always do those forward bends with my back because it relieves the pressure on my nerve. I have really bad sciatica and I'm getting checked for stenosis soon.
Now they say it's not good . ☹️
KCCAT5 the one he shows at 6:30 cured my sciatica. Very counter intuitive because at first it aggravated it very badly. Eventually however, I was literally cured and could walk again without pain. It’s called the Mackenzie back treatment
Spreading truth! That forward fold caused me a herniated disc and three years of pain. Everyone acts like it's the greatest stretch, but it's evil! Replaced it with an upward dog/sphinx pose.

Totally agree. I had been stretching like that to try and help my back pain, and I found it only made it worse and worse. Great video!
In “yoga” posture practice, bending forward is done as a warm up, and bending the knees is key.
that for practice and survival simply put that younger kids have flexibility for that and as you grow flexibility stabilizes, those old yoga practice people do it 100% correctly and practice and compensate their muscularity for flexibility. and that's why common people shouldn't do these. hanging is enough
None of that changes anything. Those postures are still not good for your back.
not rounding the lower back is key and
you're not warmer after a "warm up"

I've had lower back problems (and surgery) since I was 19 and aside shown exercises, child pose (a yoga pose but with hands behind you instead of in front) really gives great relief to my lower back. Try it. I also found out myself that in the gym you can do this upright (still go through your knees) while hanging on to a bar in front of you for even greater stretch of the lower back. Every one of these stretches you have shown us to do instead make me feel sooo good; they relax my back to the max.
Wow I love your channel. I was suffering as a kid (middle school... electric shock pain from my hair to my toes)... my doc ... instead of feeding me pain killers & surgery gave me a printed page full of stretches..some were these stretches :) best doctor ever. ❤️
Lately I’ve been doing a lot of flexibility and mobility exercises and I’m definitely doing both of these exercises and they feel great. I make sure to do spine flexion as well, but I feel a lot better now that I also do spine extension and not only flexion. It feels a lot more whole and natural. My back hasn’t felt this good in a while in all honesty.
OMG !! This is CRAZY !! This "worse back stretch" is exactly what I did 2 days ago, and even though I did it gradually, I'm still paying the price for it now. So now I've been soaking in hot baths with Epsom Salts, applying DMSO, taking Ibuprofen & lots of antioxidants, and gently doing the acceptable stretching shown here, and hoping and praying for the best.

I'm a long time yogi and I love those two stretches! Forward folds are part of our sun salutations in vinyasa style yoga. I would like to know how you do it safely and if there are any other blacklisted yoga poses ("asanas") from Bob and Brad. Thanks!
Agreed. If you bend your knees as you fold so that your back is supported until you develop the flexibility to do it with straight legs you are fine. Once you start to roll your back, that is when the stress on the back happens. Just keep your knees bent and your chest flat on your thighs. Then work on straightening your legs. The biggest reason they say not to do this is people do not use proper form. Don't arch your back and you are fine.
They have done other video's on harmful yoga poses and one of good yoga moves, you might search their channel for those videos
@@marciagrahn982 it's only harmful if you don't use proper form. Found the video and they say that the sitting forward fold is bad for you, and yet in this video they say to do it. ruclips.net/video/BDDiv3_fAL4/видео.html

My elementary school had us doing those first 2
Might be interesting to know I did yoga class for some years, and those two 'wrong' exercises were not in the routine. And surprisingly (?) the recommended were (called de-gassers ;-)). And I couldn't agree more (with the recommendation). The wrong ones were taught in primary and secondary school. Finally, in yoga class you start with a long relaxation period and that makes a huge difference once you start stretching. That's different from stretching from a cold start. It doesn't require a lot of imagination to see the wrong ones in a cold start can't be good at all.
Thank you guys, this was wholesome and very informative. Also I was doing the 'touch your toes' back stretch quite often and had excruciating pain from doing it wondered what I was doing wrong. Welp the the whole exercise is wrong. Thanks for clearing things up. I'll try your stretches for my back.
I'm a wushu (kungfu) practitioner for over 40 years. Those 2 stretches are fundamental to any flexibility routine in the sport, plus more. Never, ever had, or seen, a problem with it. Love these guys, but I'm scratching my head on this one. Maybe for usually sedentary people, they shouldn't
I agree. I've been doing these stretches for more than 10 years, I'm 53, and feel fine. I started doing Jefferson Curls 10 months ago and have worked up to 27.5kg dumbbells. I'm fairly certain I have a stronger lower back and stronger hamstrings in their most extended position. Which has to be good right? Strength and length.
I have been doing Kung Fu since the 1980s. Never had an an issue with that stretch UNTIL I had an unrelated injury causing tears to L4 and L5.
What happens is the basic stretches we all know and love, Do stretch the muscles, HOWEVER, they compress the disks. This forces the damaged disks out of shape due to the compression. Nerves get pinched. Its not a problem if the disks are healthy and strong.
I wish they had showed the spinal model, and how this action occurs during the motions. The video just doesnt make sense without understanding that.
I have a lot of back problems.(specifically my lower back) they’re totally right on this. If I bend straight over to touch my toes it compresses nerves and is incredibly painful. Staying away from these stretches is just safer
And there are tons of dudes who didn't get cancer from smoking. And yet... 🤔
Nope, if you are aware of correct body mechanics you’d know they arent a good idea.
Great professional advice!!!Yes, I was going to yoga weekly and doing forward folds. Back pain was getting worse and then I woke up with a herniated disc at L5-S1 compressing the sciatic nerve. Had a microdiscectomy that wasn’t so micro. I’ve learned my lesson
Was it in your lower back?
You guys are just great. The best PTs in the world and funny to boot!
That intro was all I needed to know that these guys mean business. Subscribed.
In the UK the first thing the physio does is say touch your toes, then asks why you can't.
But you have to preform it with your legs open, not together. That's how we had to do it and it really helped.
That was my first “test” when I went in for PT with a herniated lumbar disc and spinal stenosis. Crazy!
Well it's pretty hard to hold them touching them isn't hard for me atleast but holding them there is difficult
