  • A short film by Darian Brunetti. For booking and other info about Mike, visit www.mikemasse.com Listen on Spotify: www.mikemasse.com/spotify
This film is based around an interview Darian did (assisted by Ross Edfort, thanks Ross!) with me in my home studio in Denver, Colorado, in April, 2016. We talk about music (obviously), and a bit about the journey I've had from music major to attorney and now to full-time musician, all thanks to this RUclips channel, and some of the twists my life has taken to get me here. I hope you'll enjoy it, comment on it, and share it. Thanks!
And a big thanks to Darian for putting this together. I know so many people will appreciate it. I do!
    Best,
    Mike

Everyone falls down the Mike Massé rabbit hole. Every single time I've mentioned to friends or family that they should check out this dude called Mike Massé that does amazing covers on RUclips, invariably one gets a non commital luke warm, "Who? alright, I'll check him out...sometime...I guess". Then a day or two later I'll get a message on facebook or whatever, "Holy Shit Keith! I checked out that Mike Massé fella on youtube you told me about. I started watching some of his videos and then.....4 hours had passed!! He's incredible!! " Every...Single...Time

That's exactly what happened to me back when I found his videos lol. It's the truth. I remember showing my family and saying " You're not gonna believe how good these guys are, and it looks like it's in a pizza shop, like people are walking out with a couple pies" lol.

That's exactly what happened to me. And I just purchased tickets to his Germantown, MD show for next Saturday. Going to surprise my wife with this. I know that she'll love this concert as much as I will. Can't wait to see him in person.

At 25:00 you said what my intuition told me from the first time I saw one of your videos. I still remember thinking that night there are some really talented people that just want to make music, that don't want fame or fortune but just want to make great music, that's something money could never buy. I told my wife "this guy is incredible and he's singing in a pizza joint", I think she asked if you were famous and I said something to the effect I don't think he cares that's what makes him so great. It was so obvious from the raw energy and joy, with the perfect balance of refinement and organic interaction with not just the instruments, the music, and Jeff without being over polished, hope you never lose that. Honestly I never liked the original Africa (no offense to Toto-I loved Hold the Line), you literally gave it new life for me. All time favorite though may be Linger with Brenda Andrus even though you were backing on it that was an incredible performance by all 3 of you.
One thing I've always appreciated is the quality of the recording, your experience in recording really shines. It's transparent but I've always marveled at not just the performance but how well you capture it. I'd rather see you perform in that pizzaria than see any of the original artists in the finest venue (again no offense to them, the songs you cover were written and recorded by some fabulous artists). Not that you need my accolades, but you've got a fan...one of a few million lol, you're the real deal man.
Glad to hear Noah is doing well, your boys have some great footsteps to follow.

Lucky enough to see Mike twice in Michigan. The appeal for me was watching Africa via Reddit. The post was framed as an underdog story. Just these two guys in a random pizza place just killing this amazing song (that was ready to be exposed to a new generation). It was the simple video production, seeing the reflections of the patrons and staff walking in the background, it was the crazy hair and ball cap. And at the end, the smattering of applause for a piece of art that was so magnificently performed. It just made you want to be a part of that discovery. Mike, I know you read these, so please know that your talent has changed lives, help people through tough times and made a real difference greater than you may realize. We wish you and your family the best on this journey. Can't wait for the next gig.

Hey Mike, I've been a sound engineer for 20+ years here in Brazil and about 5 or 6 years ago a guy came into the studio and showed me ... ( guess what? ) the " Africa " video!!!
The thing about that video in particular is that when you are going to watch a video of two guys singing a cover song in a Pizza Place, your expectations are really low. And as I watched you guys it started grabbing my attention more and more because your soft voice was so pleasing to hear and when you sang those high notes with so much emotion I started to think to myself " how can I feel so much emotion coming from two guys singing in a pizza place?". And then I couldn't help watching it over and over again and showing it to my friends.
Because today I see some bands playing in huge stages ( like the Rock in Rio here in Brazil ) with impressive production and lights and everything but they don't make me feel half of the emotion I have seen in many of your videos. And I noticed that by that time you had already 2.5 million views which was so impressive for a low expectations amateur video.
Well then I started to search for more and more Mike Massé videos on youtube and I was very impressed how perfectly you sing and interpret most of those classic songs you sing.
Now I saw that the "Africa " video has reached over 14 million views which is unbelievable. I see so many artists struggling hard to get views on youtube and they usually don't get 1/10 of that number. And I know why! That's because once someone watches some of your videos, they will keep coming back to watch it again and again as I have done.
Today I watched this video telling about your story and once more the emotion took over me after hearing about what you've been through with your little boy. So I just would like to say that I think besides being such a great singer you're such an special human being. Thanks for your voice!

Enjoyed mikes acoustic renditions of his large library of tunes covering many years. In Feb of 2010, sent a message to Mike's Facebook page expressing appreciation with friend request and Mike actually responded! Well he was saying he would not take new friends he did not know personally, especially considering his occupation - I totally get it! But his kind message offered other great ways to keep up. Class act. Anyway much time passed and kinda forgot about this Pizza Jammin' Dude (Mike) that I used to show other musicians and friends and they all were amazed with the level of talent. So for whatever reason looked up his RUclips Page and am sooo happy that he is able to make a living playing his brand of music! The story above that I just listened too was awesome and even emotional especially considering his young child. So glad everything worked out!

Great interview. Love everything, but cherish The Pie vids with Jeff. Let me mention how Jeff's support with his bass and backup vocals/harmonies are stellar and add a depth to your covers. Kudos to Jeff. I will always champion Black Peter as your most underappreciated cover. Last, it's not just about your voice or musicianship. Your ability to attach the emotion and the sentiment (in your own way) of each song is what makes your covers great. People can learn to play. People can learn to sing. But I'm not sure people can learn what you have. Peace.

I am addicted to your music, and with good reason, you are an excellent musician.@ 14:10 you mention that people ask for songs you do not know. This reminds me that once I went to a lounge bar and a school buddy I had not seen for a long time was singing and playing his guitar. He asked for any requests and I asked for a song by an artist I knew he hated. He said he did not know it. I replied ''You do not know it or you hate the artist' I went closer so he could recognize me. His reaction was so funny that the audience burst out laughing. Thanks for the music Mike,

It strikes me as very odd that for as long as I've been a consumer of RUclips, this is the first time I've ever punched that subscribe button. Your story is one of the every-man and that is truly inspiring. The music brought me here and your story made me stay. If I could ask a question though: as a musician that knows this material so intimately, how do you keep your feeling for the music? I ask because I picked up a guitar years ago to learn the songs that moved me, and what I found was that as I understood the music more, I lost the emotion that drove me to learn it. You sing with such obvious emotion that it's clear you don't have this problem. So... how do you do it?
Thanks for the fantastic work, Mike!

Hi Mike! Great video :) So good and interesting to listen to such an honest and true musician. I'm a 16 year-old boy from Germany and I just love the songs you play...the Beatles are my heroes...David Bowie...Pink Floyd...and I really like Queen (so that might be my song request. something by Queen...maybe '39 or Love Of My Life? Do you like them?) It's so true what you mentioned in this video. I get lost watching your videos, forget all about time, homework,... and I go on a journey listening to your covers. My Mike Massé rabbit hole was your version of space oddity in pie pizzeria. Music is such a powerful and connecting thing that gives so much confidence and pleasure to people. It's like a big family and your videos are a big big part of that. Thank you for your work. I hope you keep on recording these videos for a long time. Have a nice day!

You are an amazing artist, so real and wise! I like most of your versions better than the original, and Dust in the Wind was what made me fall in love with your music initially. You've lost a lot of weight and look great, how did you do it?

Great video Mike, I have always loved all of your covers. My favorites are always your Grateful Dead covers, you and Jeff always kill it on them! I am going to be in Colorado (Boulder) in mid June following the Dead & Company, you have any Gigs in Denver around then?

I enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing it Mike. If you're after a suggestion for the future, I know you covered Marillion's "Kayleigh" in the past, but you should consider "Don't Hurt Yourself" - I think it would be a great fit for you. Cheers from Australia.
