high tracks were never designed with the theory that they improve traction. the elevated drives were designed to keep the final drives off the ground to decrease wear on them.
I've done a simular test to this, but with an 8T not R. One thing no one has mentioned is that the Komatsu gearing is slightly higher than the cat. Plus its slightly more powerful so of course its faster than the cat. While we had them on demo, we put them slot cutting for a day side by side. We checked the material with gps and the komatsu had moved more, and used less fuel. Personally I like the Cat, but my company bought the Komatsu, and I understand why they chose it. Dealer is good too.
I run a 96' 155 with 15,000hrs alongside a new D8T last spring and out ripped him in a hard rock borrow pit, Komatsu have always had a better ripping dozer and better blade design on virtually everthing they make. Notable exceptions for me were the 135 and the 58LGP, both P'sOS and not made anymore. I know some owners that have done very well with Komatsu since the 60's (After the cat dealer screwed them on parts) ...So it goes both ways.
Komatsu D155 / HP-354 / Operating weight - 87,100 lb Caterpillar D8R / HP-305 / Operating weight - 73,850 lb Kinda like racing a Mustang and a Viper. Both cool cars but not a even lineup.
Also look at the angle the guy on the cat is running his ripper at. He's plowing instead of ripping. This video may be impressive to those who dont know what they're looking at but operators know whats up!!!
I have worked with Cat and Komatsu bulldozers in my works. My experience is that komatsu dozers ripping better than Cat dozers. I think is the design, Komatsu has more distance from ripper to the front wheel, it gets to be more punching power.
The old version of cat such D-9 is strong as Komatsu, but the new version with high track are not, because its doesn't provide the strong ground pressure, only good thing about high track is to keep the dirt out but not the pushing power.
Wrong. The d9n series CAT dozer have the high track and have 71.9 metric tons of drawbar pull. The kom in the video only has 66 metric tons of drawbar pull with the low track. The cat also only has 10 more hp than the kom making it a better machine.
The cat have 10 more hp than the kom but its useless and probably more expensive as well. There two good things about high track will last longer on the track and keep their dirty away, but if you want the power and get the job done quickly low track is the answer.
Been a Cheeky New Zealander here but I was told mate the other day cats can't back up over piles but Komatsu dozers can, I replied " why would want back up over a truck pile, when you normally would just back around it and push it out" . Komatsu lover my bro is😉
Both are good, I cannot say which one is better.Komatsu is reliable and easier to handle.Caterpillar is strong, durable, and solid. And both brands are much better than any Chinese made tractors.

i agree a komatsu 155 outrip a cat D 8 cat is balanced and komatsu weight is att the rear . but this comparison is not fair , the cat is at the top of the hill where there is no soft soil on top of the harder material . cat is in the hard rocks . so please compare apple with a apple
Dear friends, I really think that the greatest handicap of the 155 is that... it's not a Caterpillar! If this video was made by someone that really now's how machines work's, the CAT will beat the hell of the 155.
Its like watching two snails race, they are slow no matter what, why does it matter if one is just slightly faster? They both will get the job done at the end of the day.
I've heard over and over from guys In the industry, when it comes to parts availability, downtime, repairs, lifetime use, it isn't Komatsu. They rip well. That's it.
@KOMATSUIRONM4N I found parts to be over expensive? Poor availability of aftermarket parts? What models are built in the USA? I paid $1000 per hole for pistons and liners.....its not an airplane engine I thought?
Are you kidding! While we are at it why don't we get a D575 and let it push with a D9. Some of the comments made are ridiculous. The point of the demonstration was to put the same class dozer up against each other. That's what we did and the results are obvious. That's why the customer purchased the Komatsu.
Interesting stunt, and convincing to those who do not understand the application. Why didn't you let the Cat sink his shank angle in? Why is the D8 ripper shank longer? Why is the center shank on the Komatsu shorter? I wonder how long it took you guys to layer the right amount of fill to keep the Cat in the rock and Komatsu in fill. Interesting stunt. You should try it again with rippers of the same depth, and operators who know how to rip.
I have both of theses at my work. My brand new Komatsu is terrible. Overheats a lot Can’t take the work load for a 8 hour shift. It gets wash daily. Trying to help it stay cool.
Each machine has it's benefits, i run a d10 and a komatsu 375, controls are less fatiging on a d10, komatso more quiter, kopmatsu has digital display with built in camera and a you can select recirculating air, the 10 is better for crushing rocks, 10 has better cab with more room to keep your junk and you can see the bottom of the blade. Komatsu brakes don't grab so hard or shift gears as rough becuase of the damper. You run either enough you start to like one.
the operator always makes the difference,I saw a Cat ripping with two in the ground with the thing dragging dirt deep it had no problem .here the hydraulics were set at different angels to the ground and depths here as another posted the Cat was not set right.
Take the Komatsu cab and controls and put them on CAT and you'd have a hell of a machine, The biggest and most important difference is H-track vs L, the H-tracks beat you too death. 25yr Dozer operater currently on a CAT D11.
I'm not sure what you're basing your statement on, 915600. The coal mines at Grande Cache and Hinton (Alberta Rocky Mountains) switched from Cat to Komatsu and found less repairs, lower fuel consumption along with better operator satisfaction going with Kom over Cat.
Hi, Folks. It is interesting to read all these comments - - - and NOBODY changing anybody else's opinion. Fight, you dummies, FIGHT. I 'HATE' peace. Firstly, the Cat is quoted as being a D8R, which is only about 285 HP, NOT 305 HP like the newer D8T. It is also LIGHTER than the D8T, hence less traction. Pitted against a tractor with another 70 HP and probably close to TEN tons more weight? With that in mind, just what would common sense tell you might be the expected result? And then add in the 15,000 hours that the Cat is said to have already done. I am open to correction here as these figures are off the top of my head but I think they provide a more accurate picture than some are painting here. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful argument. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
There is a difference in the length of the Rippers. One had three that was shorter. The other one had one that was longer. Grabbing into heavy Rock. That's the difference. And at the end of the day it really didn't matter. One of them tears up big rock. And the other one digs up surface rocks. Totally different Rippers
We "had" 4 komatsu D155's, compared to the Cat D8T, there was no comparison, the 155s wouldn't stay running long enough to keep up with Cats, junk in the real world.
I work as an FSO for a power plant, run 3 Cat D8 continuously. We tried a new Komatsu and the damn thing had more computer/overheating problems. I’ll stick with our old D8N over any Komatsu new or otherwise.
The Cat highdrive loses track on ground during ripping. That's why when he forces the ripper down, the tracks start to slip. The ripper mounts to the machine in front of the rear idler on the Cat so the back of the track lifts when the ripper goes down.
your 100 percent correct about this operator. the longer he uses the ripper at that pitch the worse performance he,s going to get from his tractor as the boot rounds off & goes blunt. the 155 would still out rip the 8N but not to this embarrising extent.
The elevated sprocket concept was more for aesthetics effects but believe me it does not improve the tractive efficiency of the machine. Its more costly to maintain. The earlier Cats with regular tracks were class. Komatsu on the other hand is much simpler in design and more efficient. I recommend that Cat return to the regular track design and drop the elevated sprocket!!!!"Half is better than quarter".
If youre dozing Sand , have a look at John Deeres Speed Dozer - a Quadtrac on Rubber tracks! they have replaced Conventional dozers on I think it was "Fly ash" stockpiling due to high track wear on the conventional dozer
i run a D8r in a gravel pit ,affectionately known as the dirty deed, god only knows how many hours it has, still going strong i looked at the 155 komatsue at a dealer nice looking piece of iron! just wonder how it would hold up at 20 thousand hours
Haha funny to see all the cat-fanatics support their machine. I myself know very well as a salesman that the D155 has way better fuel consumption and part prices. Komatsu Rules!
Will give the komatsu pulled hard, I will always run a cat over a komatsu anyday, operator comfort. . Komotsu, has such jerky equipment. I will ALWAYS be a CAT guy.
We run the komastu 375s and the 475s then we have a cat D10R and Cat D10T. Yea the komastus are heavier which gives them better traction but but them both on a high wall or a sloping project and see who comes outon top. Cat by far is better equipment the komastu. Also run the WA1200 loader and the cat 994 which is an old run down machine will run longer harder and produce the same tons and its a smaller loader
355 horses verses 310....yup some shoot off try a D8t more even specs also try it when both dozers have 13,000 hours on them, I ran them both, komatsu is a great dozer....when it is new
@rogueorange And in the CAT it comes with a special option.. Fuel consumption.. While the Cat is drinking at the pump, the Komatsu will be still out working. At the end of the day, both very impressive production machines...
ill stick with an american made dozer over a Brazilian made one any day !!! komatsus break down 4 times more that caterpillar and on top of that komatsu dealers are very heard to deal with !!! Plus komatsu does what they want and doesn't listen to the customer ! I've run both cat and komatsu . komatsu had some nice features but at the end of my day I'm sticking to good ole Caterpillar . There is a reason they are number one !!!
The D8R was manufactured in the USA, with a 7XM serial number prefix, and in Brazil, with a 9EM prefix. The D8R II was manufactured in the USA, with a 6YZ prefix, and in Brazil, with an AKA prefix. Production of the 7XM ended in 2002. The D155AX-6 was manufactured in Osaka Japan. Cat makes great equipment. So does Komatsu. The D155 just rips better because of the low drive.
Komatsu is made in Japan not Brazil you dumb ass!. The problem with cat is high track is not good for ripping, but is good for keep the dirty out and easy to clean.
YaoMIngdix Shanghai komatsu dozers are made in Brazil and some come from Japan, a lot of loaders come from Japan and most of the excavators are made right here in the USA
Ive ran both. The Komatsu is nicer to run so you automatically might want to think its better..I would have thought the 8 would have done better. But then again a 155 feels more like a 9.
Yall were using a new dozer vs an old one. Why is that? An N model cat dozer has more drawbar pull than the R models. Drawbar pull = better ripping ability. They also have less power and weigh less. Let's see a Kom go against it. BTW I'm a deere guy
No is not that Komatsu have strong ground pressure because is low track. But Kat have high track its doesn't provide the good traction and ground pressure. The only good thing about high track is that its help keep away from dirt and clean.
@jaredjohnson1977 Any idea why Cat chose to have a 'high-drive' final sprocket? Am wondering whether there might be a distant parallel between say, a Honda Accord and a Cadillac DTS (feel's quite different behind the wheel)?
I was there guys, cat had 15,000 hrs. on it, Komatsu did a great job no denying it, owner ended up buying it over Cat, now lets talk about break downs and how long we had to wait for parts and get it running again, 4 years later I'm sure Cat was still going, Komatsu needs serious attention. Dollar for dollar I believe Cat will cost less and do more work. O' and excavators are still over heating on 90+ degree days, Cat doesn't.
Why is everyone is using Komatsu excavators more than Cat. As for break down on the bulldozer track you probably right. Low tract like Komatsu, Deer and others will easy to break down, because its put more pressure on its than the high track like Cat.
Dumb ass engineer, Cat is cost way more money than Komatsu, because its easily to break down and high track cost more to built than low track. Only American use Cat dozer, but worldwide are either using the Komatsu or Chinese built dozer name: Shantui, because they are cost less than Cat.
@@yaomingdixshanghai6125 So dumb you commented twice a year apart on the same comment on the same video, and the guy giving facts is the "dumbass". Jesus Christ.
Yeah im sorry but that cat is cutting solid rock. You can see the rock smoke coming out of the ground. And can see the blade can not get all the way down because of the rock.
Two machines that weight 40,000 kgs with the same number of square cms of track on the ground are going to pull the same amount, that comes back to the coefficient of traction, simple as that. You cant pull more than what u weight. Comes back to physics.
i work at a wood chip power plant and we have 2 d8s and a 155ax the 155 is quieter and more comfortable but thats it it overheats after about a hr of hard work id wont turn with a full blade of chips its slow but the radio is nice in it. the cats are louder but run cooler breakdown less and will climb and push like no other. ive gotten the 155 stuck and slid it off the side once the cats hold there ground and have never been stuck but they have pulled the 155 out.
we, the USA , are in deep-sh**. maybe we come back smaller with old-fashioned pride - mabe it is blue-state vs. red-state. there was a time when i was younger that i disparaged " red-necks. " That time is long gone and what were once " red-necks " are now the only hope for USA to survive. I am surely ready to fly " old-glory " and the confederate flag side-by-side.
155 has more power and heavier. Somewhere between 8 an 9. Maintaining the cat is far easier if you do your own mechanical work. Kamatsu is a great machine though.
I run a cat D8R everyday and it has the 3 shank rippers and I can bury it all the way in any kind of rock and dirt I've ran the komatsu a lot to and I hate it I'd pick the cat any day
Doesn’t mean it’s better then a CAT. Just because those final drives are good now doesn’t mean they aren’t taking a beating trying to move faster then what an average machine should move at a set pace. Not to mention the CATs final drives aren’t working as hard to move at a night speed while pulling a ripper.
They both are good but i will choose Cat, We have both and i will tell you my 10 years working together with them, komatsu always have engine and heating problem, both have heating issue because we work them 16 to 18 hour a days, each drink 300 litter diesel a day, Cat rarely have problem but when it get problem the cost maintenance was more expensive
@HomebrewCigarsmoker Hydrostatic drive? If you don't know anything about Komatsu bulldozers best not comment on whether this was apples to apples test. D155AX-6 is NOT hydrostatic drive it has what Komatsu call HSS Hydrostatic Steering System. This is just a hydraulic motor which rotates the ring gears in the planetary drives that are outboard of the bevel gear. It is definitely one hundred percent mechanical drive.
+Tod Lindley Cat is good dozer but the problem is high track will never have the strong pushing power like the low track. High track just like using one hand or one leg to push while the low track is two hand or two leg pushing.
high tracks were never designed with the theory that they improve traction. the elevated drives were designed to keep the final drives off the ground to decrease wear on them.
That Komatsu is a beast! Nice video, glad I found it.

The Komatsu has obviously wider tracks. Less slippage but far harder on those expensive undercarriages. Also a newer machine by 2-1/2 decades.
I run a 96' 155 with 15,000hrs alongside a new D8T last spring and out ripped him in a hard rock borrow pit, Komatsu have always had a better ripping dozer and better blade design on virtually everthing they make. MrBiggreedy ur exactly right! I noticed that to all he's doing is wearing out his tooth and he's got all his weight on the front idlers.
Yes sir ripper isn’t even curled
Mmmm, I thought that it needed adjusting, as you can see the angle was all wrong, surely they would have noted that?
100% on the money there
Well I'm saying one shank isn't assisted by two and the adjustment on the cat is poor
I have worked with Cat and Komatsu bulldozers in my works. My experience is that komatsu dozers ripping better than Cat dozers. I think is the design, Komatsu has more distance from ripper to the front wheel, it gets to be more punching power.

The Cat high drive simplifies and strengthens the transmission. This durability advantage is well worth the increased length of track.

Did Caterpillar have a response to why theirs didn't perform as well?
Very power full komatso dozer D155 Ax-6 than cat d8r China made. I was operated D155 EX -6 before in Philippines
355 horses verses 310....yup some shoot off try a D8t more even specs also try it when both dozers have 13,000 hours on them, I ran them both, komatsu is a great dozer....when it is new
Komatsu is the Land Cruiser of the heavy duty trucks
which machine cost more?
@rogueorange
And in the CAT it comes with a special option.. Fuel consumption.. While the Cat is drinking at the pump, the Komatsu will be still out working.
At the end of the day, both very impressive production machines...
I ran a d6 for years and and if I ever tried messin' around like this, my luck, I would have hit a waterline, lol!!! Cant beat a cat
Yes you can komatsu proves it everyday.
ill stick with an american made dozer over a Brazilian made one any day !!! komatsus break down 4 times more that caterpillar and on top of that komatsu dealers are very heard to deal with !!!
+Darrin Deason Komatsu is a Japanese company regardless of point of assembly!
Cara burro da onde q c tirou q a komatsu é brasileira ??
Ive ran both. The Komatsu is nicer to run so you automatically might want to think its better..I would have thought the 8 would have done better. But then again a 155 feels more like a 9.
The cat operator didn't pull his shank under him. He's dragging it through the ground not ripping it through.
Yall were using a new dozer vs an old one. Why is that? An N model cat dozer has more drawbar pull than the R models. Drawbar pull = better ripping ability. They also have less power and weigh less. Let's see a Kom go against it. BTW I'm a deere guy
the operator in the cat machine seems not to be operating it properly ,its not the machine its the operator.Everyone knows that, its no secret.
No is not that Komatsu have strong ground pressure because is low track. But Kat have high track its doesn't provide the good traction and ground pressure. The only good thing about high track is that its help keep away from dirt and clean.
Cat like Honda might not be the fastest or strongest but by hell I bet they'll out last everything else
@jaredjohnson1977
Any idea why Cat chose to have a 'high-drive' final sprocket?
Am wondering whether there might be a distant parallel between say, a Honda Accord and a Cadillac DTS (feel's quite different behind the wheel)?
You can't compare cat to komatsu. I use to operate a komatsu d155 ax - 6. WHAT A BEAST!
Again, do your research. Komatsu offers a Parallel linkage system as well.
Which tractor weighs more?
The Komatsu.
Poor old USA no one can ever possibly build anything better than you guys. Stop making excuses, sometimes you just get beaten.
we, the USA , are in deep-sh**. maybe we come back smaller with old-fashioned pride - mabe it is blue-state vs. red-state. there was a time when i was younger that i disparaged " red-necks. " That time is long gone and what were once " red-necks " are now the only hope for USA to survive. I am surely ready to fly " old-glory " and the confederate flag side-by-side.
Muy lindo video, que maravilla de máquinas las dos mejores del mundo y sin desmerecer al resto...
apples, meet oranges..
I've operated both in rock and I'll take the flat track, more powerful KOM any day.
155 has more power and heavier. Somewhere between 8 an 9. Maintaining the cat is far easier if you do your own mechanical work. Kamatsu is a great machine though.
very nice race,
komatsu without any doubt is the winner.
i enjoy the power of komatsu.
Don't know what is wrong with the cat dozer wrong gear or wrong operator cat was a disapointment kamatsu seemed too have more power
Komatsu is stronger, the reason is wheel design. Cat just look strong but don't let's the look fool you.
look at length shanks of the ripper on cat compared to komatsu
Garold Gibson 3 shanks on komatsu vs single shank on cat... huhuhu
I run a cat D8R everyday and it has the 3 shank rippers and I can bury it all the way in any kind of rock and dirt I've ran the komatsu a lot to and I hate it I'd pick the cat any day
CAT is our brand though, save the nation
komatsu is very fast and reliable while caterpillar is strong and durable.
They both are good but i will choose Cat,
We have both and i will tell you my 10 years working together with them, komatsu always have engine and heating problem, both have heating issue because we work them 16 to 18 hour a days, each drink 300 litter diesel a day, Cat rarely have problem but when it get problem the cost maintenance was more expensive
Sorry... I made a typo. The former should have said 'fan-belt pulley' for $1,100.00 +
Please CAT lovers just accept it. Maybe in the next round the CAT will win.
Compare with the weight too
depends where your located...4-12g's
CAT is in 1st gear, Kom is in 2nd !!!!!!!!!!, end of story !
+Tod Lindley Cat is good dozer but the problem is high track will never have the strong pushing power like the low track. High track just like using one hand or one leg to push while the low track is two hand or two leg pushing.
Rip in second gear yep ok you would tear that transition apart in half a day lol
komatsu would be in converter lockup giving higher ground speed.
