    The feeding problems (not jams) was pretty much common to all drum magazines from that period (the Thompson mag was much worse) It happens when the clockwork spring weakens with wear and could usually be remedied by loading slightly fewer rounds into the mag. The early 35 round box magazines were very weak and prone to damgage to the feed lips, but once they started to make them out of thicker steel they were very reliable. The PPSh itself was from the beginning a sturdy and reliable weapon.

      @tavianbroadhead78 3 года назад +5

      The PPSH may fire fast but it fires an extremely light and small caliber, 7.62x25mm, which creates very little recoil. The PPSH-41 and the TT-33 which both used such caliber has extremely low recoil, as a comparison to rifles like the ASVAL, which is portrayed as having low recoil in many games, despite it firing a large 9x39mm subsonic round quite fast. Dont believe CoD or movies, the PPSH is a very comfortable gun, and actually very uncommonly used the drum. It was much more likely to have a 35 stick mag.

      @tiberiusclaudiuscaesar5238 10 лет назад +14

      *****
      Ever considered how expensive the Suomi 31 was to produce? It was much too time consuming, expensive and difficult to manufacture in large quantities which made it unsuitable in a total war of attrition. Even a wealthy country with seemingly limitless capacity like the USA found the Thompson submachine gun much too expensive and time consuming to produce, which is why the M3 submachine gun was designed.
      The Suomi 31 drew much inspiration from the German Bergmann MP28 so it was by no means as original a design as you think it is.

    The PPSh has less stopping power because the 7.62mm Tokarev round has a high muzzle velocity and the FMJ projectile gives it rather extreme penetration for a pistol round. It can penetrate a modern PASGT kevlar helmet at 50m so it pretty much flies right through a human body without leaving much of its energy in the form of tissue damage, unlike the very low velocity projectile of the .45 ACP of the Thompson. The upside is that the PPSh has a long effective range for a SMG and great penetration.

It's like corporal translating to English. He told me that all not private soldiers have ППШ with drum mags including himself when he was raised. As I understood - he never saw ППШ with stick mags.

      @tavianbroadhead78 2 года назад +1

      @@clementinetfsteam Post 1944 is odd, but if he was a junior sergeant its likely he wasn't in consistent contact with general infantry as much as higher ranks, whom would have predominately more drums in use, but overall the drums were made and used less because of cost and reliability, having the drum jam up around every ~65 rounds.

  • @McLarenMercedes
    @McLarenMercedes 12 лет назад +12

    When it came to the issue of jamming, the drum magazine did jam because some of them weren't always compatible with the weapon they ended up in. This is also why the drum magazine Thompson submachine gun was never issued in large number for war. Aside from being difficult to fit in combat it also jammed and took quite some time reloading. Hence the stick magazine became standard.
    The German MP40 was more keen to jam in winter conditions. Something the designers of the Carl-Gustav M/45 learned.

    For that rate of fire, it has manageable recoil, but the guy in the video (small as he may look) is very, very good at controlling the weapon. There are plenty of other videos here on YT featuring overweight American hobby-shooters, who can bare keep the PPSh steady.
    As for accuracy, it's on par with most other WW2 era SMGs, but the Tokarev round gives it a high muzzle velocity, great penetration (but lower stopping power) and longer range than contemporary pistol ammunition.

    Coconut you are one hell of a wikipedia historian. I'd love to consider your theory however, your comments are very biased. The Germans lost primarily because they invaded Russia fighting only one front and by 1944 they were fighting a three front war, their manpower and supplies were run thin. Sure the harsh winter favored the Russians, but it in no way "saved" them. Regarding the strategy and tactics of the Russians you can read up on the Soviet deep battle theory implemented at the time. Russians were not "sub-par" fighters, they were poorly equipped for the most part. They did a hell of a job with what they had. PS, I'm Polish and Russians should be the last people for me to defend but you are just plain wrong.

      Also, the Soviets had a (very) superior manpower, under-estimated by Hitler. The nazis also under-estimated the military-industrial machine of the USSR (saved, in part, by the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, after it's relocations eastwards), an apparatus that produced guns and weaponry at a scale and a pace that Germany couldn't afford.

    Very cool vid, almost looks like you're just shooting blanks based on the minimal recoil! It's a 9-10lb firearm though, so I guess pistol ammo, even at 900-1000 rpm, won't be too punishing. All set to kill some fascist scum! ;)
