Amazing to see such a long-range synopsis! I encourage my students to record themselves in order to document their stages of development too. I tell them that no one ever has to see it but they will want to see just how far they have come in x weeks/months/years when they do what you have done. Well done on publishing this important document of self development, Mary!

I love these kind of videos. It is great to see the progression that someone can make over the years. So often on youtube, on stage etc we just see the ‘finished’ product and it can be disheartening to see people with seemingly ‘instant’ talent and think ‘how can i ever get there’, we forget about all the hours of work that goes into this. I think this kind of video can be truly inspirational to those that are trying to improve their skills, to see that even those we admire had to start somewhere. Love your work Mary.

You came a long way your voice sounds amazing now and a great combo with your unique guitar style. I started singing and playing in bands a long time ago. Now I've been in bands again for the last 10 years or so doing clubs and parties. Recently I've been thinking about doing a solo thing. Its much easier to control the feel and the speed of the songs and really get soulful, closer to the sound I have in my head. I think I'm going to try some solo gigs and see what happens. Thanks for the inspiration, your channel is great and very inspiring.

This was wonderful. What I enjoyed the most is the development of “your” style. I watched the same with Brandie Carlisle. I saw her many times from small coffee shop in Bellingham into what she is. She could sing anything but what made her stand out the most is she found her own way of being her. This video proves the same of you.

Amazing Mary, even inspiring. At the beginning it's obvious you didn't know a lot about technique but it's really encouraging too to watch all that progress. When you sang really low just because, and then you realized you could sing a lot higher with your mixed register and your head resonance, then you pushed that part of your singing. But my favourite part was when (around 2010-2013) you realized and understood a lot better about you and your voice. It's like you said to yourself "Ok, I'm an alto singer, I have this deep vocals, and I also have this lovely upper register with my mixed voice and a sweet falsetto, ¡let's work with that!". In that moment, I think, you started to became Mary Spender as a full singer, in terms of identity, of how you like to write, sing and compose. It's just outstanding, role model, I salute you from another continent. I'm speechless at this point
Thank you, Mary, for encouraging people like myself to not give up (I'm taking my first vocal lessons and it's scary, I'm a musician, mainly a guitarist).
Just thank you and please keep doing this stuff, I'll be watching your content and progress always.
    Greetings from Colombia, Mary.

I did not read all the comments so don't know if someone else had the same thought. Your voice really turned a corner in 2010. Your enunciation became much clearer and you have maintained that. Please never loose the clear speech part of singing. If the observer does not know what is being sung it is much harder to get that emotional connection to the singer and the story they are singing about. Merry Christmas Mary! Please keep the videos coming.

You always had a good voice but the way your tone, control, and emotional connection to the music and the ability to convey it has led you to this point. Mary, 11:59 'yes, until I'm a popstar', exactly what I was thinking for you all the way thru this video, and then, at the end, you said my thoughts. You are talented and worthy, and still young enough, just, that you should be focused upon a big career in pop/rock. As an example to you, take Tove Lo, she could've stayed with TrembleBee singing gothic rock, but instead realised a change to solo electropop would create the successful glittering world she now has for herself. Similarly, you have the foundation in yourself to create the same. At the same age as you were, Tove was also saying the same thing; ' I want to go on until I'm a popstar'. You're very talented Mary, go for it. Best wishes, Alan, England.

Mary, thank you for sharing. Friends of mine got a group of us together that us the BAND app to share videos in a small group to document our progress and provide some support to one another. It does help to be able to see your progress, good and bad, on video. Thanks again.

Great video. In the age of “overnight sensations” it’s a great reminder how much hard work goes into learning a craft.
