Agreed! Even back in the Dreamcast days, I remember seeing the original Dead or Alive 2 in magazines and being blown away by how good it looked, then I finally got to play it and it became one of my favorite games. The ultimate edition on Xbox just stepped that up even more, and now that it's backwards compatible on Xbox One and Series S/X it looks phenomenal.
The best DOA release in the entire series. The level design, physics, and small character details were so far ahead of any other fighter at the time. A true classic.
I completely agree. Everything you stated above, plus the fact that it had so much content built into the game without any need to purchase or download additional DLC, were some of the reasons that this game was and always will be the highest point of the series. I feel like Dead or Alive 4 deserves a mention too because it kept the same formula, added some great characters and did a fantastic job being the first true high definition entry in the series. It's sad that the games that came after it were so tainted by DLC and corporate greed, because this series can and should stand among the best fighters out right now.
You're welcome! For me it was the demo of the first game way back on the original PlayStation. The fact that it ran at 60fps blew me away at the time, and I loved the characters, the music and how simple it was to get into. I've followed the series really closely ever since then, always picking the new games up on release. If there's one thing that I'm very thankful to own an Xbox for, it's the fact that it allows me to play these amazing games in high definition without having to jump through any hoops.
@@8-bitbasement I couldn’t agree more! I wish I had a Playstation back then. It was either that or the Nintendo 64, and I went with the latter option as a kid. Of course, fighting games on the Nintendo 64 was… mostly absent for the most part! Haha. The Xbox was for sure an amazing system! Dead or Alive Ultimate was the perfect 2-in-1 combo for those getting into the franchise! I picked up all the titles as well… I’m just missing the 3DS Dimensions (which I regrettably sold back then) and the original Playstation 1 copy!

I'm planning to do more recordings of this series in the future as well as re-recordings of DoA2U and DoA3 in 4K resolution with the unlockable characters shown as well, but I can't give an ETA on that just yet.

And nope not modded, the game was purchased digitally, running on an unmodified Xbox Series X and all of these costumes are unlockable in-game for free by meeting certain conditions. It's one of the big reasons that people were so disappointed with how DLC-heavy the series became. We used to get a really good amount of unique costumes for each character without having to pay anything extra, now we're lucky to get five unique costumes and the rest are locked behind paid DLC.
I would love another version of this game for modern consoles, but I feel like Koei Tecmo would just run it into the ground with DLC again. I'd love to be proven wrong because I care about this series so much, but ever since Itagaki left, that's how each new release has been. Maybe one day we'll at least get a collection that includes all of these upscaled versions of the first four games for all platforms, kind of like the Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, but with updated online play. That's really the only thing missing from these Xbox releases right now.

That's not to say that the third game is bad, far from it, but if I had to choose one I'd always go with DoA2U. I've always liked the stages in 2 more and the the movesets are similar enough that I don't feel like it's a huge step back. I agree with you though, these games were beautiful on release and they're still beautiful today. I really hope that this isn't the last way that we'll be able to play them.

Yeah the intro to Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate is still one of the best in the series. It does a good job of explaining the backstory and the music ramps up perfectly near the end. Still get chills watching it.

My favorite is four but I just emulate this on my phone and I actually can get it damn near 4K upskilled resolution.
