My mom went to Kirby-Smith Elementary School in Gainesville back in the late 1940s. It is now an administration building for the Alachua County School District. Several years ago the Kirby-Smith name was erased from the building

Colonel Simkins comes to mind; a controversial figure due to his later klan activity, like Nathan B Forrest. Edit: i ahould add that he claimed to have loaded the cannon that fired the first shot at Fort Sumter, and was present at Appomattox.

Those people have likely never read a book. i personally will not forget the florida brigade and their service to the cause
