Can you imagine how fun this part was to film
I would know, since I was there. We filmed for two days. However, we had to get there at various intervals during the night to check in, get our costumes and props, and then sit in holding waiting for the sun to come up so we could shoot. And they filmed the charge so many different ways and to cut the action, they blew power horns. Believe me, it takes so much to get this stuff to work.
That's amazing
Wish I was there
Well, this scene was filmed in NYC in the autumn. The snow is fake.
Director: Ok... I want 300 cops, and 300 mercanaries...
Casting guy: why?
Director: I want to see them charge eachother in a massive brawl
Casting Guy: ...I volunteer
I love the delivery of "There's only one police in this town."
He sounds afraid but also ready to die for Gotham.
And his character did die.
This is the kind of police force that can finally manage Gotham with Batman gone. 😢
Foley was a jackass. Glad he died. He was on a power trip
0:14 - This guy is a hero in my eyes. He was afraid, felt powerless, yet he mustered his courage and led his men for the city and for his family. He died a hero.
Gordon also tells him I don't expect you to be in your dress uniform and he shows up for the battle in it
The police’s morale must have shot through the roof when Batman came out of nowhere. Telling them, “I’m here with you even to the end.”
They were all pissed off for being trapped in those tunnels for five months anyway. I know if I had been one of the cops trapped down there, I'd be hitting the thugs so hard that even Rodney King wouldn't believe it!
@@sha11235 sheesh
@@sha11235 Mathew Modines character had the biggest arch in this film. He went from a cowardly beaurcrat to LEADING his men into almost certain death. Gordon asked him "did you bury your uniform in the backyard!". Then here we see him wearing it for his last stand!!
cop: YOU NEVER PAID OFF YOUR PARKING TICKETS *punches*
+jordan crawford (JC) Now that was funny!
I told you the light turned red WHILE I was making the turn
The point of this scene is that it's their last stand, their last chance. The bomb is ready to go off and kill all of them but instead of just waiting for the inevitable, the police try and make one last fight for the city; they do their job which is to protect the people of Gotham even if it means their death. It goes back to Harvey Dent's quote; "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain"; they could have done nothing and let everyone die but they made the choice to try and fight for their freedom and give their lives to do that. Even though they've hardly any weapons and no chance of victory, they still fight because it's the right thing to do
AzerGhost16 No like seriously, because If he wants one, I can send him one in the mail?
That's nonsense. Being a cop is a 9to5 job (unless ur working the 2nd or 3rd shift). First thing these 'badge-wearing civil heroes' would do is go home to their families first, take a much needed showers, eat whatever's left in the fridge during these hard times, and ponder on how to come back at Bane's goons with their trusty sidearm, because that's all they were left with. This scene of rushing against terrorists with assault rifles and tanks with the all-or-nothing-attitude is some pure Spartacus bullshit. Batman would not want these cops to do something so foolish as this crap, but in the movie all he does is destroy one out of three fuckin tanks and then flies off??
antediluvian99 Agreed. If these films were supposed to have won me over with their 'gritty realism', 'dark tone', etc..., this whole sequence pretty much fucks up all of that in one fell swoop. I prefer the alternate universe of...well, the previous movie in the trilogy, where the cops were a severely-flawed lot who were generally helpful to Batman's cause but also only human and capable of abetting some of the movie's worst disasters. Here, they're just waiting in the tunnel like the multi-ball option in the Batman-saves-Gotham pinball machine....no depth whatsoever.
antediluvian99 Even with the Bat-Chopper or whatever his flying device is supposed to be called, remember: Batman took an oath never to turn a gun on a human! Blasting Bane's men with that thing's guns would have been really convenient, but also totally non-Batman.
antediluvian99
WHAAAAT? Who cares about schedules and showers when there's a BOMB about to annihilate you and your city!? Besides, if they did waste time doing that sort of stuff after getting out, Bane would have caught on and purged them in nothing flat.
Imagine being there, your city is about to get nuked, no hope left and out of nowhere the batman comes to save you guys! This scene gave me chills.
Not my favorite movie but the cops and criminals running towards eachother is probably one my favorite scenes of all time, it gave me so much chills
+UltimateGeek710 Still a great film tho
Still my favorite scene of any comic book movie!
The best part is that all the people in the fight were actually there and no cgi was added to make it look like there were more people
True. I was one of the thugs on the set that day. We shot this so many ways.
+sha11235 Really?? Did you meet Chris or Tom or anyone?
As unrealistic as this scene might be, the part at 1:12 where the Batplane flies in and the police start cheering gives me chills.

At least no CGI except for The Bat
Absolutely
The reaction of the police at 1:18 sent chills down my spine in the theater...made me feel like I was about to rush forward and fuck...shit...UP!!!

love the beginning there. police morale was barely hanging by a thread as they timidly approach, then just a few seconds appearance by Batman was all it took to renew the fire in them to fight for their city.
This is my favorite scene in the whole batman trilogy. Primarily because it shows the people standing against the villain and leading the charge. Batman is present but he is no longer leading the charge against the villain. I think this is the scene that really shows the city no longer needs Batman; the city won't fall apart as soon as he would be gone for good. It is a big change to go from yelling, "No more dead cops!" to being willing to die; fighting to defeat the villain at all costs. The Gotham cops would definitely not stand for any crap from anyone after this.
+Michael Jensen I love this scene because I worked on it, playing one of the thugs. We had about 1000 people there for two days.
@@helafinwe This is the third movie. We have Batman Begins, The Dark Night and The Dark Knight Rises.
Even I got lost at first.
Cops are the opposite of “the people” lmao
This shows cops literally charging at the people to beat them down after they finally took control of their city
Are you seriously going to try and claim that Band's army is not a Radical Terror Group
I guess they're the people in the Jacobin sense, but that is not really something you want to be compared with.
@@smonkedweed7414 So are you saying that the cops shouldn't try and retake the city from a group of people threatening to blow the entire city up with a nuclear weapon? The city was in good shape. They'd gotten rid of the mobs and other organized crime, the kind that would slit the throats of your family in the night if you got in their way or could possibly be a witness to their crimes. There wasn't exactly a big corruption problem anymore. Besides, how would it be better for the people to be put into a lawless balkanized state where you could have neighborhood fighting with neighborhood and mock trials with punishments far outweighing any alleged crime? The cops had the knowledge that the city was about to be nuked, that if they didn't retake the city there wouldn't be a city anymore. Doesn't that make a difference? Looks to me like they are giving a beat down to exactly the people they should be beating down.

The second Batman shows up, the cops see him and start cheering, and then just burst into a full on sprint down the street gave me chills. Just like a "Let's fucking do this!" type of moment. They got Batman on their side now. They got this.
1:36 best shot;)
1:18 I love this moment because they are not only cheering because they have been saved but they haven't seen the Batman in a long time and for the first time there is hope and a chance for them to win ...
And it is all because of him ......
Its The Division, only this time the cops know how to fight back.
JTF vs Rikers Gang, movie version 😎
Yes!
And they can actually *kill* enemies too
Most (if not all) of the criminals at the front line in this scene were not part of Bane's professional mercenaries, but rather just random thugs. Hence their bad aim :-)
+darthen856 Possible storm trooper ancestry.
+Tate Cash Shared universe??!?
Their bad aim is mostly psychological. Only about 1/4 of untrained people will fire in the direction of the enemy, and about 1/50 or 2% will actually shoot to kill. When dealing with another species we have the fight or flight response. However, when dealing with our own species to other options become available. That makes the choices fight, flight, posture, and submit. Try to kill them, run away, intimidate them into running or submitting, or you put up your hands and surrender.
Most of the thugs shooting at the cops in this case are not trying to kill them, but are trying to intimidate or scare them into running away or surrendering. And in that case the loud noises made by the gun are ideal. This is why the slow firing inaccurate muskets were preferred over the quickly firing and far more accurate bow and arrow. Th musket is louder, and therefore is a lot better at being used for intimidation. This is because the vast majority of people do not want to kill another person under any circumstances.
Nevertheless, the United States Military has been able to get that 2% number up to between 90% and 95%. That means our soldiers fire over 40 times the efficiency of most of our opponents around the world. This was done by switching to firing at silhouettes of people rather than circular targets, getting the soldiers more used to the idea and to develop a habit of shooting another person. There's quite a bit more to it, but that's the basic reasoning.
+Michael Jensen That's not completely accurate.
Ryan Swaggert or maybe the cops are wearing protective kevlar.
The retaking of chaz
I love how Bane looks pissed as fuck as he's walking down the steps. You can just tell he's thinking to himself, "God dammit, I gotta do everything myself around here..."

i just find it funny how people are angry about the lack off logic in this scene and how more people shouldve died, while completely overlooking the fact that there is a full grown man running around dressed like a bat trying to fight a modern darth vader
Because the movie is grounded in a sense of reality. I honestly hate people who can't grasp what the 4th wall is, and how we suspend our disbelief.
Yasss
Full body and head armour exists in real life as do VTOL aircraft, and Nolan's films are often cited as being somewhat "realistic" so it seems odd that more officers weren't killed.
I dig it
@@maxpalombella11 "Full body and head armor exists"
No, it doesn't. No body armor can stop a bullet fired from a modern-day rifle.

The part where the batwing comes in and all the cops start cheering and charge just shows how Batman gave hope when there was none, the dark knight trilogy is a masterpiece
People bitching about how it's unrealistic... Guys, there's a fucking flying bat mobile, if anything, that's unrealistic, but no this is a movie, fuck the effects, the great script and story is what sells it
There's a difference between improbable and unrealistic. A flying bat mobile are things that are a generally accepted function within the movie's reality. As improbable as it is for a flying bat mobile to function in real life, we suspend our disbelief to accept that it can happen in that world. Shooting waves of people that should account to hundreds of dead bodies is also improbable to borderline unrealistic (It's debatable). Unrealistic would be something along the lines of the Indiana Jones movies (i.e. Surviving a nuke by hiding in a fridge).
The Bat used in the film is a real military fighter jet. They just painted it black and took shots of the front and CGI'ed the back. No really unrealistic at all. Nothing about TDKR was unrealistic
YEAH,computer high five
At 2:25 the cop to the left gives the weakest punch ever.
Some of the extras were faking their punches of course. We didn't want anyone to get hurt.
Damn I have to hurt you but I don’t want it
Cop just realized it's his friend from high school. So cop and thug decided to fake fight so they don't have to fight others and get hurt.

No but it needs to be.
@USA#1 !! the goal should be to stop ot while its contained in the cities. Once the big cities fall it will be in the suburbs. Do not ignore it now. Deal with it now.
Be proactive not reactive
Batman is here fight back everyone.
This is what happens when you have a leader he inspires to stand, the way the cops run when they realize Batman is with them makes me tear up everytime.
Seeing Matthew Modine emerge from that crowd in his dress blues was god-damned glorious.. Easily the best scene in the film..
I remember wanting to cheer when Batman destroyed the tank and the police cheered and started their charge.
Yeah... BOOM!!!
"So you came back to die with your city?"
"No, I came back to stop you"
A better line would be "No, I came back to save it"
and "CAUSE IM BATMAN!!!"
Exactly what I was thinking!

Or "no, I came back to break you"
“I forgot my keys”
The battle for the CHAZ begins!

Something I use to help get me into the story of a movie is this: never place the movie in our universe. When you see something unrealistic or cheesy or something, it doesn't matter. In that movie universe, things are a slight different than ours. Not talking about this movie but all movies. Plus as a huge batman fan, I had goosebumps at this scene and ready to run through the screen and join lol

Hans Zimmer is just amazing, indescribably incredible. I admire him so much.
By this point in the film the theatre was ready to fight Gotham I distinctly remember people let out a small cheer when Batman came and the cops charged. One of the single most satisfying finishes of any film period
I love the dead silence at the beginning of the scene.
Modine scores one of the best lines of the movie and his character redeems himself, almost makes it all the way through before he meets his end, but dies a hero.
No cgi for the crowd. The amount of extras was amazing. Some people complain about the fighting in the crowd being too fake. The fact Nolan pulled this scene off is impressive.
People knock this for not having a lot of actual Batman but they miss the entire point of this amazing series. Batman wanted to inspire people and when he began, GCPD was a bunch of evil corrupt scum or passive cowards like Gordon was at first. Bruce was able to rally the troops and when Mathew Modine does a 180 and LEADS his men into battle I almost wept. "There is only one police force in this town!" Sure, he dies, but better to die a hero than live long enough to see yourself become the villain. This was a perfect final film of a perfect trilogy.

Yea, a cop who shot a wannabe gangsta who had just assaulted and robbed a store owner (who also represented a racial minority) and then proceeded to threaten the cop and attempt to gain control of the cop's firearm, was definitely a 'bad' guy.

Every movie is in its own universe
undeniably, the police are brave!
and the criminals are stupid. they had more guns and ammo than the police, so they should have just shot them when they had the chance instead of engaging them in close combat.
William Thompson most of them are from Arkham or blackgate and most petty criminal in Gotham aren’t smart

First time ever the Gotham police force wasn't useless
AL EX not the first time
To be fair, regular police academy doesn’t include fighting on ice with Ra’s al Ghul.
I am pretty sure that fighting supervillains is not the responsibility of Gotham police. They leave that to Batman.
Jesus, did Bane hire storm trooper drop-outs or something? I could do more damage to those charging police with a pistol
Without being well trained, when the moment comes to kill another person 3 out of 4 people can't get themselves to do it. The result of which is firing away and purposely missing. (I'm referencing the book, 'On Killing' by David Grossman)
That is why our soldiers are trained often to charge head on into enemy fire. There lack of disciplined training makes them miss most of the time, and our superior training helps us to hit our target most of the time. That is one of the primary reasons our enemies have so many more casualties. A perfect example of this is the final battle in the movie 'Tears of the Sun'. So the goons' lack of aim at the charging police makes perfect sense.
+Michael Jensen no... there are hundreds of guys with automatic weapons opening fire into a condensed group of charging enemies from 20 meters and closing... A fuck ton of the police are going to die
+DavidStnl83 most of these criminals probably have never shot a gun before. Which means most of their shots either went above the cops or below them. Just because you got a big gun doesn't make you threatening unless you know how to use it. These criminals are like children as most are in the real world because they think just because they have a powerful weapon in their hand automatically means they're the best in the world when that is far from the truth. So it makes a lot of sense that not that many cops died. Cops are trained and criminals are just amateurs. You probably play way too many shooters that makes shooting a gun look easy
+channelnw true there rifles would have clicked empty within ten seconds of full auto fire
+DavidStnl83 For Bane it is about giving the cops false hope. Here the police are fighting for a chance to live and Bane knows that the bomb will go off and kill them all so it doesn't matter if his men shoot them down or not. if anything making them think they have a chance when they don't have one is more evil and it is Banes way of torchering Gotham to the very end
