Subscription Boxes for Men (my opinion)

  • Are subscription boxes like Sprezzabox, Gentleman's Box, Urban Dapper Club and all the other men's fashion boxes any good? Are they worth your hard-earned money? Even if you have the money, should you spend it on mystery boxes?
A few years ago, subscription boxes didn’t exist. Now there’s a subscription box or option to subscribe to almost every type of product or service - even stuff that doesn’t make sense.
I get it - companies like the model - it’s predictable, recurring revenue.
In this video, honest opinion about the model, specifically for menswear because food subscriptions obviously make sense. Really, anything consumable makes sense to me, but what about stuff that lasts a long time like clothes, shoes…and yeah, watches?
If you want my opinion, I don’t personally spend money on subscription boxes. I’m very picky about what I wear and what I own. I don’t like to own too many things. I’m no minimalist, but I consider myself to be pretty intentional about the things I surround myself with and keep in my home and office. I really don’t like owning things that just gather dust, and I don’t like owning more than I really need.
Of course, you should spend your money how you want to. But I firmly believe that buying more things will not make you any happier. That's been the case in my life, for sure.

The Modest Man They are most certainly a waste of money. Subscriptions are at best a dubious way to receive merchandise, at worst, they are a scheme centered around making the company, not the customer, happy.

      The Modest Man
It's cool, for a couple of minutes. But any mans collection of stuff is a window into who he is. You can't get that kind of personalization from a one-style-fits-all monthly box.

I agree 100%. The ones that bug me the most are the nerd and pop culture boxes that give you stuff like bobble head characters and collectibles. It just feels like you are paying to get garbage and clutter delivered to your house every month. At one point you said that you aren't a minimalist, but you kind of described yourself as a minimalist. Everything you own is intentional. I believe that is the true idea behind minimalism.

Love this video. I subscribed to SprezzaBox for a few months and just found that a majority of the stuff wasn't of my personal interest or to be honest, wasn't up to the level of quality I looked for in my clothing. I'm not high class in any way, shape or form, but found a lot of the stuff to be just average at best.

For the most part, I kind of agree with you and this video was refreshing to watch. That being said, I wear a shirt and tie everyday at work and although I am trying to be more knowledgeable in fashion I honestly have no clue what I am doing lol. I was thinking of doing the basic gentlemen's box because they will match everything together and have some information in their booklet that I could learn from. I also hate shopping so this solves that problem as well. I can't speak for the quality of the ties and socks they send, but I think for $25 it is worth a shot. Most ties I get cost that by themselves. I definitely wouldn't intend to stay subscribed forever, but I think it is a nice starting point for someone like me who has trouble matching his ties, socks, shirts and everything else.

When I bought my first suit I subscribed to sprezza and gentleman’s box and purchased all the past gentleman boxes they had in stock for a discount. I’ve since canceled both subscriptions when I found a thrift store with $1 ties and I bought the rack. I still use a wallet, scotch ice tray, glasses, watch straps, socks, tie clips, lapel pins, pocket squares, shoe laces. Customers love the outfits I put together with my collection. I’ve had a customer buy a tie off my neck after his haircut.

I'd never buy subscription boxes, but I do have one subscription, it's a cigar club membership. I like the idea of a cigar club since I do smoke cigars, so it's not for everybody. And it's Privada Cigar Club in case anybody is wondering. The only reason I chose them is because I get rare and well aged cigars that I wouldn't be able to find otherwise. One added bonus which fits with the theme of this video is, I smoke them and they're gone, so no clutter. =)

I couldn’t agree more with you on your view on this topic.
I constantly repeat that mantra to my wife whenever We’re out shopping & she wants to do a impulse buy.
I guess I’m too practical of a guy. I’m constantly asking myself those 3 things.
Also when I purchase anything I want it to have purpose & a use as well as it to last me a long time.
Unfortunately most products are not meant to last as long as we would like. It’s simply a rouse to get us to spend more money to either replace it with the newest better thing.
Unfortunately we’re all constantly marketed all the time to buy a lot of useless stuff we don’t really need or want or even have a use for.
Essentially we’re just making some else rich with our hard earned money.
Thanks for your honest opinion & I enjoy your content. Keep the videos coming

Most subscriptions are so broad they don't capture enough of a unique user to make them worth wild. Unless I can choose my size, desired color, style, and roughly what the item is beforehand, I'm not interested in. Sadly where this is possible, I find it better to simply buy the item as I know what I want and would rather buy 6 today rather than 1 a month for 6 months.

I agree with you, being an anti consumer is necessary at this point. Mainly because it creates a false sense of statistics in the manufacturing sector where it feels like people need something thats why they are buying it but in reality many are buying just because they are told to and own it for the sake of it. A friend of mine buys a new backpack every year if there is a sale on something he liked but he still uses the one he bought 3 years ago because it still is fine but he buys because he can and he liked it and it might go away from the marketplace forever.
The buying decision for me is first Do I need it? and then can I afford it? If yes then buy or just forget about it. If I really think more about something then my mind might find reasons to buy something I really don't want to.

  • @gentwithin
    @gentwithin 6 лет назад +4

Agree with you that the longer something lasts the less sense it makes as a subscription service. I subscribed to Sprezzabox a few years back and it was cool getting new things everything month, especially the grooming products as I learned about some brands I wasn't aware of. However, overtime it just became too much. You can only own so many funky colored socks and ties before it becomes tiresome. I think they're good for guys who want to experiment, but I, like you would rather spend my money in more of an intentional way. Too many subscription boxes in the menswear space now.

Awesome video and really refreshing you say your true own opinion and I can just nod to it. Subscriptions doesn't make sense for fashion/non-consumables in general. If even a size selection isn't possible it's more or less resource waste.
Despite the resource aspect it's a loose on so many levels:
    - things you don't need or want
    - things which doesn't fit
    - no own style choosing and style buildup
    - no own quality selection
    - superfluous gadgets
And for these looses you should pay continuously? Sounds like an awesome deal :D
Sure it's awesome if you get inspired - like with complete outfit boxes where you can select your style, give measurements etc and get a stylist-picked selection and return the things you don't need. These did I try and it works but I prefer a local store where you can try, have good staff and get the fitting done correctly in first place. Took it's time to find such store but now I'm so happy and prefer the personal experience way other some boxes.
Finally I can really share your thought about minimal owned clothing/items in general. I sorted out my wardrobe a couple of days ago and filled up some missing peaces and it feels just wonderful to have items you really love, wear them and in good quality. And without walking ads for some brands ;)
Keep going the good videos - best wishes from Germany (y)

Well I'm a 50/50 fan...I really connect with your perspective of not being someone that doesn't buy things for the sake of if...it's really sad to look at your shoe collection and realise you don't put on something anymore...to be honest I think of people that don't have anything and how you buying things you don't technically use is sad in a way, all in all, totally agree with your point on things

For me lots of good clothing stores are closing in my town, and subscription boxes let me to try new things that were not options, and blend in to what I already own. It works for me!

The only subscription I have is for a cologne. Want to check out some expensive colognes cheaper until I find one I love then just buy a bottle of that

I’m way too picky for subscription box. It’s for people who don’t have the capability to choose themselves.

I love the analogy to Christmas! I do like a few things about subscription boxes. I have found out about a few different brands to try out that I otherwise wouldn't have. Also, places like Bespoke Post can open up your mind to things you didn't know you needed :)

Like you said, they work for consumables but not for anything else. It's just a way for companies to push products on you.

I subscribe to the sprezzabox. I do it for fun, as a let's see what I receive.
What I don't use, I give away, or my wife and kids take what I don't use.
But I recently started dressing nicer, and it was a quick and fun way to gather accessories and ties.
It's $28 a month. And my wife's ok with it.
She is a subscriber to fab, fit, fun.
We both agreed after a year. We would stop, due to its fun but that money can be used somewhere else.
It was our Christmas to ourselves.

I agree. I had a subscription for a box for men for 5-6 month. I ended up with a drawer full of stuff I didn't want, couldn't use, and didn't like. I closed it down.

I agree wholeheartedly with you on your points, but there is a flip side: If a guy is just starting to begin his professional life and doesn’t have much, this might be a great way to just get some exposure to some finer things. Yes, maybe not this particular product since some of the items were not great quality, but nonetheless. If a company allows returns of unwanted/unneeded products, this would be a great way to start out by keeping the items you would use and fit. Me personally am extremely special about certain things such as watches due to smaller wrists and glasses because of a slightly smaller head shape, but I’d do a service specifically for clothing to expand my personal preference. Maybe you’d get something that you’d NEVER otherwise consider and realize it suits your personality and would consider adding it to your daily wardrobe. Just some thoughts! I do agree about the constant bombardment of consumerism and living relatively minimal though. Keep up the good vids!

I think they may make sense if you're starting your fashion journey, don't have a lot of time to shop and want to experiment with different accessories. It also helps if you're the typical size.

I generally agree with your thoughts on subscription boxes. They make more sense for consumable items like men's grooming products and less sense on clothing items and accessories. I do think that services like Trunk Club and Stitch Fix are a better model for clothing. You work with a stylist who can pick clothing items based on what you like and what fits. Plus you only pay for what you keep and you can determine how often you receive a box.

I hate shopping, being tall and skinny as well, it takes ages at a store to find something that looks good and fits as well. For the last year I have done a clothing subscription box, and while there was a month or two where I had to return things because of fit or style, I have no regrets. I don't have to spend hours in the store, they know my size and weird quirks as well. It's nice, I don't have to worry about shopping for clothes, I simply tell them what I'm generally looking for or need. 11/10 - will keep doing. Buying with intent is great in all, but this cuts down on all the clutter and hours of hunting for me, and I actually have a wardrobe now.

Bespoke is a good sub box. You put in all of your sizes so that’s one of your problems solved and you also get to choose from a variety of boxes and you know what’s inside them before you agree to pay for it and you can change between them or opt out for a month. So it’s basically just a way to discover cool unique products that you can buy if you want

It's depend upon the costumer itself if it's worth it to buy or not(my opinion also)💖

I agree. The values they claim are highly inflated, I do love watching unboxings though.
