I used to work in Operations at my old career and I oversaw sourcing, pricing, and assembly of components for our equipment. Eventually, we ran the math and the cost of sourcing and assembling a "low" spec *and* a "high" spec for our equipment drove the COGS up on both, hurting margins and making both specs cost more to assemble than if we built the high-spec only. So, we did what any business would. We stopped sourcing the low-spec parts and built everything from the high-cost components, and the low-cost option went away. Was that the right decision for the consumer? Almost 90% of our sales were the high-spec, and this gave us wiggle room on the margin for the high-spec. For the other 10% that wanted the low-spec? It was worse, yeah. But for 90% it was often better. If the prices are right, and this allows a low-cost option for consumers who want it by reducing the overall COGS, I'm in favor of this. If the prices are not competitive for the base bike, walk away. Otherwise, this feels like complaining "things cost more than they used to".

The capital it took to install the features on the bike is considered sunk costs and it's built into the original pricetag. They make profit selling the bike to you when you buy the base bike. They they try to sucker you out of more money by activating things on your vehicle that they've already sold you. The person who wants the features has to pay more money than they should, and because the costs of the features have to be baked into the base price of the bike, the customer who doesn't care to buy the extra features would be paying for it regardless. None of the consumers win. If people care enough, KTM's sales will suffer horribly from this decision, so much so that they'll stop quickly and preferably fire the moron who pushed this idea.

    • @KyleStanfield
      @KyleStanfield Год назад +7

Never mind that whether or not you pay to unlock these features, the tech itself that exists costs money.
Take heated grips for example. Not everyone wants those. A standard, non-heated grip costs less than a heated one, so if you equip all the bikes with non-heated grips, they cost less to make. You can still sell heated grips to those that want them. Otherwise, if you make them all have heated grips (locked behind a paywall), you just increased manufacturing cost of all of them with a feature only some people want (or are willing to pay for), which increases consumer costs by making them pay for something they don't want and then don't even get unless they pay again.
Never mind that electronics can fail, software updates fail all the time. When is the last time you bought software or bought any piece of tech and there wasn't 200 million bug fixes to be downloaded over the next 6 months?
And the other issue with complexity is the more complex the system is, the more failure points it has. Imagine the heated grips on there that you didn't want and don't function because you didn't pay for them end up getting a wire pinched and it shorts or starts drawing abnormally.
Or imagine wanting to customize it and make it your own. Don't like the look or feel of the grips? Too bad, you're stuck with them unless the manufacturer offers a different option that they can install (because imagine clipping the heated grip wires causing failures and fault codes). Hope you like the ones they offer, because it won't be long before there's proprietary connections where you can't just swap an aftermarket heated grip on.

Companies like Oxford, who are the go-to default for adding heated grips to a bike, or Power Commander, or even nuke the ability to add an aftermarket exhaust to a bike.

Its cheaper for them to just stuff all the features into every bike, than it is for them to kit the bike out with the individual wishes of each customer. Alternatively they could raise the prizes of the bikes by 1-2k or whatever all the additional stuff costs and make it available from the start.
Actually it benefits the customer because you can buy a bike for a cheaper price upfront and then buy the stuff you actually want later on.
For example KTM, why would I wanna pay for a quickshifter or cruise control when I don't want to use it?

I know I personally have had up and down experiences with KTM. I bought a brand new 2020 790 Adventure S last spring. It was already discounted $1K from the original MSRP since the 890 had already been out. I spent about $900 to add the Quickshifter+, cruise control, and rally mode. To be fair, cruise control wasn’t built into my bike and new switch gear was installed as part of it. The Quickshifter+ and rally mode were just software upgrades though. My bike started leaking oil from the valve cover within the first 500 miles. I took it to the dealer for a warranty claim and it took 5 months for a valve cover gasket to come in. Since they had to take quite a bit of the bike apart to diagnose the issue, it had to sit there the whole time if I didn’t want to pay for labor to reassemble it. 5 months for a gasket directly from the manufacturer is absolutely unacceptable. I later had to order a new oil pan and gasket for the bike (because of my doing, not the bike’s fault). I got those parts within a week from a third party supplier. Overall, the bike is just amazing. I still feel mine has been a good value for what it offers and everything it can do, even with the supply chain issues and having to pay for features. I don’t think I’ll buy another KTM though, even though they make some of the best performing motorcycles you can buy.

I suppose you need to weight up the cost of upgrades such as the difference between paying to turn on a function compared to buying a base model and adding these as either post purchase manufacturer installed or aftermarket installed functions. I can see where KTM is coming from in the sense that the cost to produce one model with all the functions verses manufacturing two different bikes of the same model is probably more cost effective, knowing that customers would likely pay for an upgrade down track. However, subscription based upgrades would be a huge turnoff for me. Another issue with all the programable electronics would be if governments decided that available vehicles (new and already on road) had to comply with new emission regulations and the manufacturer electronically adjusts that vehicle to meet that requirement, changing the engine performance in the process. Now that would really suck.

It's not a subscription or a rip off, it is just like if you go to buy heated grips - in this case, the software is enabled, in the usual case they have to disassemble stuff, run wires.. etc and charge you a whole lot for that privilege.. That's crazy. I promise I won't be considering a new (or old) KTM any time soon, and I seriously hope nobody else does either because this is an extremely dangerous precedent. Real shame.

These features are included in every bike regardless if you've unlocked them or not. Meaning their cost has already been factored into their MSRP when you buy the bike, so you really are paying for these features TWICE. Wow..

Great video Spite, loving all these new videos. From the beginning of your video it was giving me BMW subscription vibes, and I agree with you: if it's physically on the vehicle you should pay for it once and be able to use it for life. The options list has always been a way to make money, but this is a massive step too far.

Don't put features on a bike or car or anything and lock them behind a paywall. Just sell me the complete package or not at all. You and people like you are the reason why companies are pulling this shit. Can't wait to buy a new fridge but have to pay 500 bucks to keep anything below freezing.

    Thanks for clarifying.
A friend of mine had a KTM 790. He bought it used from the dealer, with very little milage on it. The bike had slipper clutch feature, which the dealer claimed other 790 did not have.
He rode it for a bit til he decided to sell it.
At that time he took it to the dealer order to ensure the bike was fully serviced before selling it.
It turned out that, when he picked it up, the slipper clutch no longer functioned.
He went right back to the dealer and complained about this, and they took the bike back into the shop to find out what happened.
Dealer kept saying that according to the computer, everything was OK.
Yet... slipper clutch was no longer available.
My friend insisted that he wanted the bike back in the same condition he had bropught it in.
This went on for over a week or so. Miraculously, the slipper clutch feature came back, and my friend sold the bike. Yet, the dealer never explained what had happened.
Thanks to this video, now we know what happened.
I am certainly staying away from KTM.
This practice of selling you an expensive motorcycle with features that you will only be able to use if you páy more, is simply outrageous.

What happens when your payment method expires, your subscription payment doesn't work and your subscription is unknowingly cancelled. Then you go for a ride not knowing that certain safety features have been disabled which causes you to crash and hurt yourself?

  • @admireinspire

My opinion is that some of these brands can't compete on the prices other brands are offering. So their bike is being compared to something vastly superior at the same price tag. I think a lower base price allows more riders in and also let's the company deflate the msrp so it looks better. I guess I'm okay with it because that's been the dlc of video games for as long as I can remember. And the guy who never goes off road and doesn't need heated grips saves a little money.
