  • After a week off for printing, Grapevine editor-in-chief Valur Grettison and his trusty Chief Morale Officer Pollý are back to take you through the latest in Icelandic news. Full details of everything discussed in this episode can be found in the description below.
    There is now less chance that the volcano in Grímsvötn will be going off, and therefore the orange alert for flight has been lowered down to a yellow alert. Read our latest article here: grapevine.is/news/2021/12/06/...
    COVID-19 is the same as before - too much. Current restrictions were due to expire today, but have been extended with no change. Read our Covid coverage here: grapevine.is/news/2021/12/07/...
    Jón Gunnarsson of the Independence Party has been made Minister of Justice, a very controversial appointment. Jón has been criticised for his anti-feminist views in the past, and other politicians have been questioning whether he is suitable for the role. Read more here: grapevine.is/news/2021/12/06/...
    In other news, Menthol cigarettes will be banned in Iceland and the price of fireworks are expected to skyrocket (pun intended). And lastly, actor Kaley Cuoco is in Iceland shooting HBO’s hit show, The Flight Attendant.
    You can help us to develop our RUclips content by becoming a member! And membership comes with perks, such as special access to the Grapevine Team and to our video content. The 2011 eruption at Grímsvötn was the largest from the volcano in more than 50 years and actually produced more ash than the much more famous eruption at Eyjafjallajökull. What was different was that the plume was largely carried to the north-east away from transatlantic routes which meant there was only a little disruption to flights. The other good news from Grímsvötn is that the magma is almost always basaltic (like that in Geldingadalir) which means it tends to form bigger ash particles than the stickier magma at Eyjafjallajökull, so much less ash can reach high altitudes and interfere with planes. Of course, that just means the ash falls closer to the volcano which is pretty miserable for the communities in the SE of Iceland.
    Chances are, that if Grímsvötn erupts, the eruption might not even break through the icecap, but it could send more water down the rivers, so there is still some risk from flooding along the southern coast,

    • @TheReykjavikGrapevine
      @TheReykjavikGrapevine  2 года назад +6

      It's due to synchronisation between camera’s frame rate and the frequency of the AC power that the lights are plugged in to. To avoid this we would need to use special filters to lower frame rate, but these filters doesn't go well with our stabilisation equipment - sorry about this.

      @@TheReykjavikGrapevine I imagine Art has tried using PAL at 25 fps. If not and Art is using an iPhone, he should be able to change the Camera Record Video settings and enable the ‘Show PAL Formats’ toggle. Then try 1080p HD at 25 fps (PAL) or 4K at 25 fps (PAL). I'm not sure if RUclips changes the playback rate. 25 fps playback should be ok on computers. I'm not sure about smartphones. The audio may go out of sync from RUclips, so it's something to check, if he hasn't already.

    It’s not serious because everyone takes it seriously, Iceland rules! Would love to see a saga series filmed in Iceland based on the old Iceland folklore tales. Netflix has put several Christmas movies out this year from Norway and Sweden dubbed in English that were really enjoyable. Hearing fireworks, church bells and church choirs all over Scandinavia at Christmas and New Years shared live on Instagram the winter before the pandemic began was absolutely magical.

    • @peterginsburg2465
      @peterginsburg2465 2 года назад +2

      It's the Hallgrímskirkja church. It's the 2nd highest building in Iceland. On New Year's Eve, it's where everyone lights off their multi-rocket fireworks packages. Art did a video of it, which is on the video section of the Grapevine RUclips channel. You really won't believe how many fireworks are exploded. When Valur mentions the fireworks, it's really a big deal in Reykjavik. They go a bit crazy. There's no public sponsored fireworks display. So, everyone in town lights off their own.

    I'm wondering why all the lights in shops and on the street are blinking. Anyone?

    • @peterginsburg2465
      @peterginsburg2465 2 года назад

      Lights actually flicker on and off because of the electric power grid alternating current. We don't see it, because it happens so fast. In the US, it's 60 cycles/second. In Iceland and Europe it's 50 cycles/sec or 50 hertz. Art's camera shoots at a frame rate that is probably a little off. He might be shooting at 30 or 60 frames/second. So, the camera is running faster than the lights switching, so the camera catches the period when the lights are off, when the current switches from positive to negative.

    • @imsbvs
      @imsbvs 2 года назад

      I saw that as well, including inside the buildings too - must be related to the recording (I'm not technical enough to explain but does occur elsewhere too)

    • @mikerichards6065
      @mikerichards6065 2 года назад +6

      It's an optical illusion caused by the shutter on the camera which isn't visible to the naked eye. The mains frequency in Iceland is 50Hz so LED bulbs have a 50Hz flicker. If the camera's recording frequency isn't synchronised with the mains frequency, the lights will be occasionally 'off' when the camera records a frame - so you get this pulsing effect.
