Welcome to Reykjavík Newscast! Icelandic Parliament is back in session after its longest break in over 30 years and Reykjavík Grapevine editor-in-chief Valur Grettisson is here to tell you about it.
Iceland is still a red country when it comes to COVID-19, with around 200 people diagnosed with the virus yesterday (Monday 22nd). Just over half were in quarantine however, which is a good sign. Read our latest Covid report here: grapevine.is/news/2021/11/23/...
The Animal Welfare Foundation published a shocking video of so-called blood-mares in Iceland, shaking up the discussion about the industry. Read more of our reporting on this here: grapevine.is/news/2021/11/23/...
And in politics news, the parliament finally got back together. It hasn’t been active for around 150 days, which is the longest time since 1987. But there are complicated reasons for this, connected to the votes in the northwest of Iceland.
It's hard to decide which of the Grapevine shop's amazing Iceland-themed items to buy for your loved ones for Christmas! So we've done the choosing for you by putting together some splendid collections, and offering a 20% discount on them until midnight Icelandic time on November 30th.
Browse our 'Boxes Of Iceland' and decide which one you'd like to brighten someone's Christmas Day. Or you can buy a box, split it up to create a stocking-filler for everyone, and keep something for yourself! You can see the full range here: shop.grapevine.is/collections...

You will notice the sound in the middle of video changes - we had a problem with our mics and didn’t notice until after the recording. Rather than skip a newscast we’ve decided to put this out anyway, but please accept our apologies.

Cruelty against animals should be punished much more severely !
We have the OSPCA here in Canada, the O for my province, Ontario. I support the OSPCA as my main charity. I’ve rescued two cats from there and they do great work. A friend of mine works with horses and other large farm animals. They levy huge fines and prohibit ownership to offenders who mistreat the horses etc. Iceland needs to increase their punitive measures and perhaps the cruelty will cease or decrease. My Floozie, a very spoiled cat, is only alive because somebody cared enough to rescue feral kittens. She runs my household and my life as well! Just like Polly rules you, Valur! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦😺
Can't watch the horse cruelty video, but am glad you've brought the matter to attention. That girl chucking the Frisbee deserves that chocolate in your pocket! 😉
Nice newscast.
And I see that Josie Ann is helping Valur with keeping Pollý busy.
Also I have to say, that the mic problems are not that bad. Sure, when Valur is talking with the back to the camera it's a little bit difficult to understand, but the camera's microphone has a good range. It's interesting to hear the noices around you - especially the ravens. Very nice.
May I ask what camera Art is using?
Happy to see the Christmas decorations in Reykjavík. We left Iceland about three weeks ago and I am sure it is now colder and darker --but the decorations cheer things up! Fun fact: we had lunch at the Sker restaurant in Olafsvik on October 29. Christmas decorations were in full swing!
I was very saddened by that horse video and actually could not watch it all the way through. I wonder how those horse owners would like it if they were subjected to the same treatment?
Thank you for your report. Good to see you and Polly.
Just a heads up, the tree branch may be a customs issue with some countries. Plants are often restricted.
Won't be able to send that to Australia or NZ.
Careful ...... there might me a law against the import of plant/parts (twigs and leaves and stuff) to other countries. Plant pests, viruses, and the like could be present without your knowing it beforehand. Please check your local governmental agricultural -chapter before mailing things like that. I wouldn't want you getting into DoorSniffer trouble and get fined by SpoonLicker.
Looks like Poly has temporarily adopted another human!
Appreciate how well you handle the news. You have a common sense approach that gets facts out without a whole bunch of background noise.
PS - have never heard about harvesting of pregnant mare blood to force higher pig reproduction. Seems like EU farming policy is promoting gigantic commercial farming in a way that is against common sense.
Good for you to address animal cruelty! So many things go wrong with raising animals for food or other (ab)use. People get upset about the eating of dogs in Korea etc but think eating pigs or veal is fine... 😕😲 change is possible.
(says the animal protection party candidate in the last election in Canada)
Iceland is a good way to judge what happens if most of your region is vaccinated. Sure, there will still be cases but they will be mild. Iceland has 3X the cases of 2020 but 1/6th the fatalities (give or take). That means the vaccines work and work VERY well. However, it also means Iceland hasn't taken the mitigation seriously enough that so many people are still getting sick.

I did animal welfare for 12 years …it was abhorrent then 30 years ago and it is abhorrent now!… Wish your country luck on changing the global laws!
If there was any chance of sending a 5 ton block of warm lava that I can stick in my living room to heat my home for the winter I’d be very grateful…and so would my fireplace grate! 😁😎
I spent a year in Iceland. Military. I had friends in Grindavik and traveled as much as I could. I would love to return someday.
i love that you walk around the city areas … it is lovely to see your city and country.

I love Iceland 🇮🇸 but don't let your people mistreat your animals.

Pregnant horse urine is used in America to help people loose weight and build muscle. It has been banned in Canada. Polly is getting a good work out today. I was surprised to hear the ravens calling. It’s a sound I love at home. Thank you Valur and Art for today’s video.
Without a microphone it turned out to be a kind of special amosphere as if I was there next to you and watched as you were reporting 😁 I'm very interested in hearing background sounds that are usually not heard.
OF all Thee horrible things for THOSE WORTHLESS SO CALLED HORSE PEOPLE, needs to be stopped immediately of their ABUSE AND SICK WAYS ! Reporting them is the right way to go. No decent human acts this way. Also NEVER TO BE ALLOWED to have livestock or any pet
Dressed in rags, Fjörulabbi was last seen on Christmas Eve walking along the beach as The Giant Shadowy Feline stalked him silently careful not to get its feet wet…
Seems as though Valur's mic was not working very well.
I kept horses for years and will not stand for cruelty to any animal, there is never any excuse, stick the farmers in a field and poke and torment them to see how they like it.
Aside from everything else, I actually kind of enjoyed it when the mic stopped working and I could hear the street sounds. Would it be too weird to suggest a video of ASMR walk around Reykjavík?
I'd vote for that. In stereo too!
Regarding the taking of pregnant horse blood as an aphrodisiac for pigs, is this just an old traditional practice based solely on 'old wives' tales' or is there actually some real science involved here? Also doesn't introducing horse blood into a pig's system present some dangers regarding the possible crossover of viral or other diseases to pigs and horses? 🤔
Let me test my mike: "Hey Valur! Can you hear me?" (Now I turn my back on my monitor.) "Hey Valur, can you still hear me?" Nope. Something broken.
I lived in Iceland for several years in the 90's. One of the many jobs i held there was on a horse farm in the south of Iceland. The first thing to understand about Iceland is the ponies that don't meet the standard for the perfect Icelandic pony are slaughtered for meat just like cows and sheep. I witnessed various sorts of what I would consider to be abusive at best on that farm. I was assured it was all just standard practice on Icelandic farms.
There is no such thing as a Icelandic pony, only horses.
I subbed to the newsletter, but no question to answer about the Yule laddie...the answer is: Shore Laddie !

Shame on Icelandic and the Ice Horse breeders who are okay with this abuse and do not demand that is stopped.
Good to see you and Polly!
I don't believe Shore Laddie belongs to the Jule Lads

That's nonsense, but keep spreading your narrative.
@@ddpxl You can call it a narrative or whatever you like. I call it personal experience. You probably think it's okay and reasonable for police to stop and detain someone while they're just walking down the street.
Any shocking maltreatment of horses must be a very minority activity. The vast majority (around 80,000 in total it is believed) are, I am sure, well fed and cared for in good conditions in the open air. It is striking just how many horses there are in the fields alongside roads. in 2008 I rode one for a couple of hours at Landmannalaugur with Guthruni the resident horse-woman. These sturdy animals thought nothing of plunging into the two glacier rivers there, with icy water over the stirrups, before heading up into the surrounding steep and rocky hillsides. Later, a caravan of about 40 passed through the area, with two or three horses per rider, to prevent overtiring on a multi-day trek.
I see you have a new Journalist reporting on the new Volcano. Miss seeing your frisbee dog.
Polly amazes me. I've seen her in other videos too. She is non stop.
Valur, who can we write to re: the blood mare problem? I watched that video, it made me so angry. For some stupid reason I thought Icelanders we're better than that. But of course, humans are humans. I'd like to send a letter to someone about how cruel the blood mare practice is. TIA.
Nice area of the city your were in today!
Fjörulabbi (Shore Laddie) is not one of the 13 Legendary Yule Lad's.
I LOVE YOUR REPORTAGE ! YOU MISS TO PRESENT POLLA! SHE IS ADORABLE ! PLEASE DON'T FORGET THIS LOVELY MEMBER OF THE PRESENTATION TEAM. CONGRATULATION FOR THE CAMERA MAN - doing great job !
Interesting... Cochannel interference with your wireless microphone. The other channel sounds like a museum lecture. Seems to indicate that both systems are Narrowband FM and at your receiver, both signals are near the same strength preventing a signal capture lock. Switching to Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum systems Should overcome the problem.
That's lateral thinking ... to stand on a seat because its wet
Nah, it’s vertical thinking.
I'm with Nencat (below). I'm really surprised to learn of this legal form of abuse of animals in Iceland and the EU. Please, everyone who lives where this happens, write letters, protest, do whatever you can to end it. It's horrible. Here in the USA we have many farm-related animal abuse problems (especially on the agribusiness scale), so I'm not writing from some superior moral soapbox. I also really appreciate your reports about potential volcanic activity.
Fjörulabbi (Shore Laddie) is not one of the 13 Yule Lads.
It looks like the moved all of the planters that had various plants and bushes and replaced them with new benches. Was this done to expand the outdoor seating for the various restaurants during the covid period?
I had a hard time hearing you between the background noise and when you walked away or turned yoour back I could barley hear you. This hasnt been a problem in any other videos.
It's mentioned in the description. The mic in his jacket stopped working half way. They realized that after they where done and decided to not do the recording again.
@@ddpxl it wasn't when I watched this. I watched it right when it came out and didn't seeit then but yeah, he mentionoed it in the latest video.

Hello--- Not sure if this is the right venue to ask for Technical info, but do you know if Ham Radio is enjoyed as a hobby in Iceland? And, what might be their organization's name ? Thank you, kind sir.
My mother told me what farmers did to the horses. I'm disgusted. Legal..unbelievably crazy...my god...icelanders call your leaders...disgusting.
So voting issues are not restricted to Berlin, I see. Not sure if I should feel worried or reassured, but it made me smirk.
Check that microphone set up. Audio dropped off when you were several meters away, or facing away from camera lens.
The confusing election system in Iceland causes a mess in parliament and in forming a new government coalition. Yet in the Netherlands there was an election on March 17 - and still no new coalition government in sight. The current caretaker one muddles its way through the pandemic, with the latter always just ahead of the politicians. Small wonder when there are 19 (!) factions in the 150-seat chamber in The Hague. Hopefully, Iceland will not have to suffer the disgrace of that kind of mess...
Your wireless mic died into the video but you likely already know that
😂
That lady is going to take Polly home….

17:00 Is there a dog leash law in Reykjavik? I sensed a little worry on Valur's face when he saw those police.
There is a regulation, and it varies from town to town. It's not a police thing though, and it didn't even occur to me that it would be on their mind.
It was hard to hear Valur sometimes which makes me think the mic he was wearing either wasn't on or wasn't working. This left the microphone on the camera to do the heavy lifting.
We had technical difficulties, info in the description :(
@@TheReykjavikGrapevine Ah, I see. I agree I would much rather have a newscast with low sound than none at all :)

Fjorulabbi is not one of the Yule Lads. Thanks to The Reykjavík Grapevine, today I learned about Icelandic Santa Clauses.
I'm thinking it is, Ketkrokur. That is not one of the Yule lads.
Mic Swap at 8:22
Ahaha - I answered the Yule Lad quiz wrong because, after your explanation of the lads, I did not think they would beg for a candle, but would just take them. LOL! I see Polly got someone else to throw the frisbee while you were distracted. Smart Polly!
I had never known of the blood mare practice before today. I'm aghast! Abusing pregnant horses in order to abuse young pigs. (Inducing pregnancy before their bodies are naturally ready for it). WTF? Is there nothing a human will stoop to for the sake of greed? I guess the answer is no, there is not. I do hope and pray that the Icelandic people and the government in place can stop this completely reprehensible practice soon and successfully. At least in Iceland. Of course, you can't control other countries.
I do realize that farmers must often work very, very hard for very little money. It does seem as if the farmer collecting the blood is not the one making the big profit. But if this really is a farmer survival scheme in Iceland, rather than a 'greed' scheme at that level, I also hope that the government will find a way to support farmers who may lose their entire livelihood if the abhorrent practice is abolished. Not just abhorrent and so unnecessary to put pregnant mare through this, but to turn around and use the blood to abuse young pigs.
mic failure, ok though.
Replace mic battery?
My thought, too; mic battery.
Signed up, and I believe, Fjörulabbi is not :)
Is there a petition to sign to stop the horse exploitation and abuse?

This mare hormones is used to get pigs easier in heat, I thought other animals got this a well, like sheep and cows, and this is sold outside of Iceland. From spring to late fall they collect not mor than 5 liters per horse at a time, and you have vets and farmers doing this, people are selling them cheap horses. You can of course also buy horse meat from them since the male foals are being slaughtered. A lot of money is involved so...and guessing powerful peoples
I had three question but two were answered: Is that Josie in background with Polly?
I think that I hear ravens? Are the hotdog (pylsu) Kosher?
keep up good work Shore laddie is not on of the 13
How many horses are there in Iceland? If there are many pregnant mares, there must be many foals, and this could cause too many horses.
