  • The town of Grindavík was ordered evacuated at 23:20 on November 10, 2023, as a strong and dense swarm of earthquakes rattled the area and the Icelandic Meteorological Office identified a magma intrusion had formed beneath the town.
    Jón Trausti Sigurðarson went to the outskirts of Grindavík on Nov. 12 to speak with a police officer and two Search and Rescue volunteers about the operation to let residents go back to their homes for short bursts to collect necessary belongings.

    To all those worried about pets, a list of all lost pets was made after the evacuation Friday, during the window that residents between 12 and 4 to go back, pet rescue crews went in and also rescued the animals. The video i watched said that all the pets had been rescued.

      I am so glad the animals are being evacuated too. It may seem lightly humorous to have 50,000 chickens to rescue; however, in Iceland, agriculture is a precious enterprise. Every creature matters in the health and welfare of the larger whole of Iceland.

      @@marytyson7890 WTF didn't YOU understand that most of the town is off limits for these operations and that there are still animals left behind in those parts? Also even if they get rescued, they have nowhere to go, because emergency shelters are off limits to them and Icelanders are quite hostile towards renting something to someone with pets (why, when little children cause much more damage and tenant is always responsible for that).... I hope at least in this crisis they will manage to pull their heads from their greedy asses and make places available. P.S. the rental market is insane here (expensive and nothing available because of AirBnbs) and there are loads of greedy multiple property owners who rent out their property just from October to May and in the turistic season they change it to Airbnb and don't give a shit.
      I do hope the animals of Grindavik Will be OK.

      @@veveveve5743 A majority of the animals were rescued yesterday and the remaining few (8 cats) will be rescued tomorrow if conditions are safe. I am a volunteer with one of those shelters and I can assure you that the pets are safe and in good hands.

    Wie kommt es, das der grossteil der isländischen bevölkerung 1. so professionell mit solchen bedrohungen umgeht, und zu 2. so hilfsbereit und emphatisch einander gegenseitig ist? Liegt es vielleicht daran, dass sie ständig mit der bedrohung leben? Das kann es nicht sein, dann sähe New York, LA, Detroit oder jedes andere Slum anders aus. Ich weiss es nicht...

      I wonder if it is because it's a smaller community and everyone is probably in the same financial level. I saw a lot of people helping others during the pandemic here in Utah. Someone set up a Facebookpage wheree people could ask for something they couldn't find in the stores. They could post what they had extras of. People made masks for free and distributed them. A larger church here distributed food, just for the asking and you didn't need to be a member of that church. Some churches still distribute food once a week in their parking lot.

    Oh, my - thank you so much for the fascinating update - interesting in the sense of what is being done to help Grindavík residents as much as possible. I'm relieved to know people were allowed to get livestock away to safety...and what pets were reachable. I also understand why, sadly, others are not allowed to retrieve pets because of the worst danger zone. Whether the pet owners agree or not, and I'm sure many would risk it - I sure would - but human life is more important, so the authorities must choose human safety. This reminds me of the aftermath of 9/11 in NYC. So many pets were left in apartments, because owners were at work, but then no one was allowed anywhere near the area for many days.

      @JaneRobinson24 7 месяцев назад +2

      @broncoguy4862 It's impossible to tell the whole situation in a few words. The forum will last for 3-4 hours.
      Also, if you know, there is a censοrship in the comments and not everything can be said openly. So please wait until December 2. Don't miss this very important event: *"Global* *Crisis.* *The* *Responsibility"*

    Thank you for giving us such an impressive, but also troubled insight. Both for geologists and for the concerns, fears and worries of the inhabitants of Grindavik. We hope for the inhabitants that there will be no eruption and that the magma chamber will retreat again. Nevertheless, it seems to be a tense place for the future - geologically speaking. We hope that everyone is safe and that the residents can move all their personal belongings to a new neighbourhood/safe house if necessary. Far away from any risk.

    Thank you both; and thank you to search and rescue and everyone- for helping families and farmer's rescue their animals. please. Please work hard helping to return each pet, and animal considered livestock, to their entrusted caretakers & safety. Domesticated animals depend on humans to remove them to safety. they are incapable of leaving on their own. Allow owners to return and retrieve all animals if at all possible. My ranching roots are obvious. Animals under our care require our protection. Grateful to all for the excellent and timely evacuation orders for residents of Grindavík

    You need helicopters that can fly over broken roads and take off immediately, also go faster than cars by straight lines of flight - tell your authorities to summon aid by helicopters for the majority - wouldn't work for large livestock however.

    • @YeCatte
      @YeCatte 7 месяцев назад +2

      I'd like to know that also. Fifty eight cats and 114 pigeons were listed, yet it's only livestock animals that are now being rescued. Probably because they are worth money.
      I've read various reasons/excuses about the cats being left behind. None of them say anything to me about anyone actually bothering or caring about them.
      The most common excuse for the cats being left being spread online is that fifty eight cats "went into hiding" during the panic when their people were evacuating. I don't buy that at all.

    • @MsMoople
      @MsMoople 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@YeCattenot sure if you ever had a cat that had free access to the outside...they can be stubborn and refuse to come when called. The more stressed you sound, the less likely they come in. But they also are pretty good at surviving outside. Just hope they don't find the pigeons....

    • @YeCatte
      @YeCatte 7 месяцев назад

      @@MsMoople To add...
      ..some of the cats may have hidden in their homes where they may be "invisible" to panicked owners, then subsequently been trapped inside when their owners were ordered to leave. Those cats will have gruesome deaths from dehydration/kidney failure within a very few days. Most cat owners don't provide adequately sized water bowls for cats to encourage them to drink enough.
      It is an apathetic myth that domestic cats can survive easily on their own. I have worked with long term strays and ferals for decades and most do not do well without help from humans.

      @@charlesward8196 Icelandic is a fascinating language that has remained very similar to Old Norse for centuries while the other Scandinavian languages evolved a little more, being in closer contact with their neighbouring countries. They are all related though and look very similar on paper, but the pronunciation is often quite different.
