Although fairly new to your channel, due to the Iceland eruptions of the past several months, I watch regularly because of your teaching style. Having said that, I know you are a professor first and a RUclips podcaster second. However, with your time, financial investments, and care and concern you've extended to the Icelandic community (I am not one. I live and reside in the US), I am glad you discovered the second fissure eruption as it occurred. I was watching your livestream and saw when it happened via your drone flight, but this is a good post (just think, you will be in historical literature!). Thanks again for the educational exploration.

If this trend of quick and dramatic eruptions in the same fissure system continues, can we say anything (from earthquake data for example) about if the next active fissure will be another kilometre south, or if the magma has least resistance going north of the first vents instead?

It is truly amazing what drones are able to do and the view they are able to give us -- not even helicopters can match this ability at 1000X the cost to operate. That closer fissure has already destroyed at least 3 homes and if the eruption continues for a couple days then the east side of Grindavik is likely to follow suit.

THOSE OUTLIER HIGH GPS READINGS THAT SEEM TO COINCIDE WITH THE ERUPTIONS ARE INTERESTING.
COULD THEY INDICATE A SUDDEN EXPANSION/COMING OUT OF SOLUTION FOR GASSES?
Maybe a bad analogy: the system is pressurised and full of dissolved gas, the earthquakes as it breaks through shake the bottle, a fissure opening takes the lid off, but the opening isn't big enough in the first minutes, so the gas coming out of solution builds excessive pressure throughout the system, hence a short-lived significant ground heave 🤔

A minute or so before Shawn first notices and points out that vent, you can see a gas plume in the background. It disappears for a while behind the map in the upper right corner, but then reemerges shortly before he points it out.
And if you look at that the earlier time about a minute before, there's no sign of lava coming out, it's just a very large gas plume, much larger than when he notices and points it out.
So I think that earlier point about a minute before he catches it, is the large gas plume actually cracking and erupting out of the surface, and then just about the time he points it out is when you see the first lava coming out.
So yeah, I think they actually captured on video the gas plume that opened that vent up, and the first bits of lava emerging from it, even before he starts pointing it out.

QUESTION: On the Sundhnukar - Grindavik livestream timestamped between roughly 11.00 and 12.00 (Iceland time). The cam is showing the northern end with two active vents. In the foreground near the edge of the lava are two prominent plumes of gases which resemble the plume that preceded the opening of the new vent at Grindavik yesterday, but do not lead to a new vent opening. They seem to be coming from the ground not outgassing of existing lava. Could they be directly connected to the near surface magma chamber and be releasing pressure within the dyke? During this time period the visible vents are becoming less vigorous.
I’d be interested in your comments.
Thank you for yr livestream and keeping the plight of Grindavik residents in mind.

ive looked at the town and topography south of the southern flowfield. It seems to be possible to restrict the damage to a relatively small area and then let the lava collect on the flatter land just north of the campsite. Hopefully the lava will have stopped by then. If not then it'll flow into the harbour.
