1984, I'm sitting on the right side of the backseat of my stepdad's maroon Honda Civic driving from the Central Valley, Ca. to So. Cal, the window is down, it's 90 degrees, it smells like hay, and I'm listening to this cassette on repeat with my new Sony Walkman. Weird the precise moments music can take you back to.

Synthetic music is so familiar now that it's probably hard to imagine the impact it had when very sophisticated synths first appeared in the 1980s on pop records. Of course there had been synths for decades and some had been polyphonic, but by the 1980s it was possible to synthesise pretty much any sound and so tracks like this featuring combinational sythetic instruments, synthesised percussions etc - had a wow factor that is hard to imagine now. It's not a bad song either and of course the band's styling was so very 80s that the whole package was about as "of the moment" as it was possible to be.

Now you've done this, you gotta go back to their first album. Love on your side, Lies, Tears, If you were here, we are detective and so much more. You can't miss with any song on the album.
    Give it a shot, guys!
Another good one this time. Thanks
PS, there were no actual twins. The lead singer/musician Tom Bailey and percussionist/ singer Alana Curry were married and musician/singer and producer Joe Leeway filled out the trio.

"Side Kicks" was actually their third album.
Songs like "In the Name of Love" were on their second album.
But by far, "Side Kicks" (With all of the remixes) is their best most complete album.

"So I sing you a new song, please don't cry anymore"...that line encapsulates the changeover from the 70s to the 80s in America, so very well...musically, culturally, politically, all of it. A new era, and a helluva decade.

First time I was ever in the UK this song hit me. Friend picked me up after I cleared customs in London and I drove thru London jamming to this. I made him play it. I had to listen to it.

One of my very favorite new wave songs. Saw them in the late 80s and they were unexpectedly fantastic. The female is an amazing percussionist and stole the spotlight. Very talented.

The 80s music was so much fun and good natured positive music. The band's name was based on the two bumbling detectives Thomson and Thompson (who are not twins) in the English language version of Hergé's comic strip The Adventures of Tintin

Lex's description of the composition as 'simple' reminded me of the comedy sketch you'll find by searching 'Harry Enfield Who's That Girl sketch' about a tone-deaf fishmonger trying to sing the Eurythmics song, 'Who's That Girl'.
You don't need to do a reaction, just watch and laugh!

Fantastic 80s band. We did bring out some fantastic music over here in the UK back then. The Thompson Twins got their name from the detectives in Tin Tin by the way.
