- In this video I analyse the goofy, but secretive father of Ichigo, Isshin Kurosaki, or Isshin Shiba as he was once known. Very little is known about Isshin, until the arrancar arc where we learn that he is a shinigami. We never really get to appreciate his status as a shinigami until the Everything But The Rain flashback, which takes place during the Thousand Year Blood War arc. Hopefully by the end of this video you will know everything about Isshin, his status as a former captain of the gotei 13, explaining how he had left the soul society, and how he married Masaki Kurosaki. So let's analyse BLEACH’s best dad Isshin Kurosaki.

I don't think allot of people realize this. When Ichigo first finds his shinigami powers in his inner world (out of all the falling boxes), Ichigo pulls out his father's hilt
Right? His sealed Zanpakuto had the same tassels at the end of the hilt that Isshin's do. The only differences are, 1, the size, as Ichigo had little control over his power, and 2, the guard is squareish shaped, rather than more hexagonal, like Isshin's.
@Zac Glover was it because he had no control? I thought it was because his reiatsu was fucking massive, which was originally why he was able to sense spirits pre-shinigami. Also why his standard non-shikai zanpakuto was huge..

@@Link00TMM Ichigo's ability to see ghosts & hollows was due to the fact that he was spawned from a Soul Reaper and a Quincy who both hold the same ability.
@@Link00TMM both. the size is determined by how much power you have but as stated in ishins fight with fisher shinigami regulated the size of the swords or they would be swinging around buildings
It always bothered me that there wasn’t a “This explains everything” moment for the other captains seeing Isshin as a Soul Reaper again and learning he’s Ichigo’s dad.
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.
That also includes rangiko and hitsugaya's reaction to first seeing him and finding out he's ichigo's Dad. As well as the other captains reaction to seeing him during the fake karakura town arc
Or for Rukia specifically, like "that's why he looks so much like kaien."
Kubo explained all of that in an interview. Rukia just though it was a human that had the same first name and a very vaguely similar face, but much much older looking than Captain Shiba (since Shinigami age waaaaay slower than humans), as at the point of meeting her, he had no power to sense, and seemed to be way older than the Isshin she knew could be. Also Kubo revealed that Shinigami and Humans can't have children together naturally, except with the humanizing gigai that Isshin's soul was stuffed into. Due to these facts, Rukia immediately dismissed the idea as even possible, and just passed it off as a coincidence. Though, Isshin remembering who she was was the reason he was so gung ho about letting her stay with them all the time. He liked seeing a familiar, friendly face, even if she didn't realize it at the time.
On the other hand, Rangiku and Hitsugaya immediately noticed him for exactly who he was and put together where he'd gone all those years ago. Though, they silently agreed with each other not to even approach the issue or Isshin himself about it, as they both believed he must have had a sufficiently important reason for doing what he did, and that he may have had some painful memories pertaining to it.
Also, between the end of the Arrancar Arc and the beginning of the Fullbring Arc, Isshin silently revealed himself again to the Soul Society, but was given a pass by Yamamoto, the same way Yoruichi and Urahara were cleared and welcomed back as allies due to them all being an integral part of their victory. With that, Ishhin was allowed to remain in the Human World as a "Human" until Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu were all able to live on their own without him.

Seriously i'm still disappointed that Isshin and Ryuken were on the sidelines in the TYBW arc, I was expecting a battle between them and Yhwach to avange their respective wives (even if they don't win or they get joined by their sons that would've been epic)

In a way, Ryuken did get his vengeance. After all, it was his arrow that Uryu shot that allowed Ichigo to win.

I love, just *love* that Ichigo's signature ability is inherited. It cements Ichigo's core character trait of being a protector of his family. How does he do that? By using the strength of his father and mother. It's beautiful.
Isshin and Ichigo’s father and son dynamic is really nice. Everything but the Rain really shows that Ichigo is Isshin’s son, through and through. Hope you do a Masaki video at some point!
Also, if you notice in his adulthood, Ichigo looks uncannily like an orange haired Isshin during Isshin's time as a Captain, but with some of Masaki's slighter facial features.
@@Zac_Frost this is why i always say kubo is a genius when it comes to character design. Look at kazui as well he's so much like orihime but his facial features is like ichigo.
@@shukufuku17 Yeah. He's got Orihime's eyes and face shape, but his hair is bright orange with a bit of wildness to it like Ichigo's, not the same perfectly smooth burnt orange that Orihime's is. Just like how Ichigo has Isshin's spiky hair, but in orange, and most of Isshin's facial features, but Masaki's nose. You'd instantly recognize that all of them are related even if you never read the series.

I’m glad Kibo will be assisting with the anime filling in all those plot holes left behind in the manga due to it being rushed. I know Isshin has a bigger role in the TYBW arc then what we’ve read. I’m eager to see his Bankai, his interaction with his clan and the 10th squad, etc.
Well with 200+ episodes in the works, then you would assume that will happen.
Kubo is a shite writer. The anime writers always did a better job of telling the story. Bleach is like Star Wars. So much potential yet is been trashed on with bullshit mary sues and a great deal of explain but don't show storytelling. If you're telling a story, show and don't just tell.
The funny thing on this anime is that Uchigo tried his best to hide the Captain's hanging out in his room without knowing Rangiku and Hitsuyaga were his father former members on the 10th Captain of Gotei 13th
Imagine if Isshin busted in the room during those times and the scene it would cause.
Honestly what I love about Isshin Kurosaki and Ichigo Kurosaki is that both Father and son have no problem drawing their swords to fight, but also know how to enjoy and maintain peace and not becoming bored with the lack of action.
I will never forget his introduction as soul reaper/shingami in Episode 111 while destiny awaits was playing in the background.

I forgot how much I love the interaction between Ichigo and Isshin at the grave site I even remembered the line "If you can die smiling" before the panel showed the quote ❤
I didn't grow up with a father because we were are both in different countries. When we did reunite, our relationship was distant at first but when I read Bleach, Isshin's charachter changed my mind and now I have a close relationship with my father. Isshin is a very cool person and so is my father.

Really what country
Isshin is one of my favorite characters in Bleach and I'm glad you got to analyze him. Not only is he a father that takes an active role in their children's lives, he one of those characters that you are happy to learn more about. While at first appearing to be just an overly silly dad about everything who messes with his son, slowly but surely, you learn that he a some representation of what Ichigo can become: a person willing to do whatever takes to protect his loved ones, but also can laugh during the good times. The biggest factors that prevented Ichigo from developing into the kind of man his father is his angst of his hollow abilities and his grief over his mother's passing. After growing pass these personal hangups we see through he's not as goofy as Isshin, he has become a much happier person while also keeping his strong drive to protect his family and friends.
Another that I've always liked is the comraderie between both Isshin and Urahara. Both characters find themselves trapped in the human from their desire to do good, with Urahara being exiled in his attempts to save the visoreds and Isshin being trapped after giving up his shimigami powers to rescue Masaki. They also have the ability to present a goofy persona that hides a more capable and serious indivisual, especially after Isshin regains his powers. These similarites allow for them to work together well very effectively and it is always reassuring that Isshin can trust Urahara to care for his son when the latter trains Ichigo.It would have been great to see the two interact more and at least have them fight together in a battle. If their is is any scene from the anime or manga that has this, please let me know.
Kisuke and isshin teamed up with youruichi and fought aizen in around episode 308-310 306 is all out war when aizen solos the gotei they fight shortly after but aizen wipes them as he is fully merged with the hougyoko at that point but he fought well
Isshin is also one of my favorite characters in bleach that nobody really give enough credit or attention to. Great video as always!

I think Isshin was a really excellent character by the end and I was also disappointed we couldn't see his bankai. Still, a fun and memorable character. Thanks for this analysis!
Ishins bankai is ichigos shikai a giant sword striking long range energy blows at his will which u cant avoid them because they are lightspeed opposite of ichigos getsugas

Fun Fact: Isshin Shiba (Ichigo's father) and Minato Namikaze (Naruto's Father) share the same Japanese Voice Actor. So, both Ichigo and Naruto are brothers in a way 👀

Something I never understood was a lot of bleach characters had been at Ichigos house but act like they don’t know him. Always found it strange. I mean he was a former captain but multiple gotei 13 officers see him at Ichigos house and never mention it. Hitsugya and Rangiku both visit Ichigos house and Isshin was there former captain. Figure they would say something about it.

I buy that somewhat but after Ichigo broke into soul society I would imagine any half asses intelligence agency would research Ichigo. I could believe Urahara made his gegi show himself appearing slightly different to shinigami than how he looked as a captain. Just seems like that’s a plot hole that should have been answered back then. Guess better than toriyama retconning things he forgot about.

I really hope Kubo adds more stuff to the anime that he could not in the manga, given the time they had and still have for production until October. Especially since with all the help for Soul Society and the world, ne never got to visit his Shiba relatives or Rangiku and Toushirou. After Gin died, despite Rangiku having resolved herself to help Toushirou, I think it would have helped her to know at least one person she lost was still alive. Then after the final fight, I wanted Isshin to visit Kuukaku and Ganju

Isshin has to have the most goose bump inducing moments per scene he's in than anyone for me. He embodies honor and shows you don't have to be serious 100% of the time to do so. Love him so much!
I feel like not mentioning his interaction with Rukia in WDKALY was a missed opportunity, although for me personally it just leads to more confusion. I'll always question his role regarding Mugetsu, as even Kaien doesn't have a Moon Themed Zanpakuto. Don't get the wrong idea though. I love the guy, Ichigo or anyone would be happy to have a father like him. Masaki was their Sun, and besides the Earth the Moon too revolves around it.

Ichigo isn't a human or a quincy, he is a balance of all 4 species. Human, quincy, shinigami, and hollow. How his soul didn't go berserk or self destruct is a testament to Urahara, Isshin, and Misaki ANY imbalance in him could have killed him.

Also to take note is that in the Fake Katakura Town Arc, when Isshin tells Ichigo to open a senkaimon to chase down Aizen in Soul Society, Ichigo tells him how massive Aizen's reisatsu and that there's now way they could stop him. At that scene, Isshin was shocked that Ichigo could sense Aizen's reiatsu when he couldn't and state that it may still be possible for Ichigo to stop Aizen. When they enter senkaimon and that the Kototsu was destroyed by Aizen, Isshin finds the chance for Ichigo to learn a way to stop Aizen in time, the Final Getsuga Tensho.
What to take note here is that when Ichigo tells Isshin that he could sense Aizen's reiatsu, Isshin confirmed that Ichigo's power has already evolved at the same level as Aizen. What I mean about Ichigo's power here is his shinigami power, his original zanpakuto, White Zangetsu. We learned in Everything but the Rain that Old Man Zangetsu suppressed Ichigo's shinigami powers, his zanpakuto which is his inner hollow before it could mature. Before arriving in the fake Karakura Town, Ichigo fought Ulquiorra and died. At this moment, death ruled in Ichigo's inner world thus releasing his inner hollow and it matures into its final form. It is at this time that Ichigo's power achieve the same level as Aizen and he only needs to master it to learn Final Getsuga Tensho.
I mean it was told by Aizen himself "it seems you've gained a new power after your fight with ulquirra" , Aizen knew something was suppressing his powers and needed to give a push to Ichigo , also Aizen killed the cleaner so that Ichigo could train in there for longer , but he was unaware of Mangetsu being a thing

Isshin was well-written. I like that everything but the rain flashback. I really think he could have his own series as him as the main character. Going over what had happened to him and the Soul Society maybe give some insight on the shiba clan going back maybe even to his father ichigo's grandfather that would be interesting.
I think that Isshin's and Ichigo's resemblance between zanpakuto's are more a byproduct of their direct lineage than from being a part of the Shiba Clan, because Kaien's Zanpakuto, Nejibana, is totally different from Engetsu or Zangetu.
With that said, I always liked how goofy Isshin was, a direct contrast with Ichigo's frowning all the time, especially with those "Wake up, Ichigo!!" entrances...

Isshin saving Masaki always seemed to me to resonate with Ichigo saving Rukia. The will protect and both carried them like luggage. 😂
This is like in Naruto where many says Sakura resembles Naruto's mom a lot personality-wise (and maybe lookwise just with different haircolor) yet they still didn't end up together...
@@high_sky8581 except the hair Sakura never resemble Kushina at all. Even in at her small age Kushina was sweet, smart, kind and loving total opposite what Sakura was in Naruto original. It's not after lot of criticism towards Sakura character kishimoto changed her personality more mature and caring in shippuden. Also Kushina never acted like desperate simp like Sakura did for sasuke in original

Isshan was always one of my favorite characters. When I first started reading the Manga, his goofy actions, with a sprinkle of deep wisdom made him stand out as a character to me. And when he was revealed to be a shinigami, it was awesome, and him cutting down grand fisher was all to sweat. When his past was finally revealed, I was glued to screen. I do wish I could have seen his full power

Great video. I like the idea of Getsuga Tenshou being a clan technique and I wonder if learning the final Getsuga Tenshou is actually a sort of rite of passage for someone taking over as clan head. I wish Kubo had explored it more.

when I 1st saw that he was a Captain in the manga, I got so hyped and the way how they drew him in full shinigami clothing is so cool, he has the most simplistic design as a captain but GOD dam he looks so cool with it
There's one thing that always bothered me, how the hell Rangiku never realized or even met Ichigo's father? She was Isshin's vice-captain, after all.

An interesting thing about Isshin’s Zanpakuto is that the handle of his Engetsu looks just like the handle of Ichigo’s first sword, when he becomes a substitute Shinigami. They both have 2 blue strings and the handles are red.

That he is. He espouses the rebellious outsider nature of the Shiba and gave his family a normal life away from the troubles of the Spirit worlds, especially the nobility with their endless lethal scheming.

Isshin was what sold the story to me. Even before we learned he was a shinigami, I just loved his parenting. I really liked Ichigo but Isshin was my favorite character. That was sealed when I saw the graveyard episodes. I fell in love with the anime at that point.

There’s one thing you got wrong, isshin is the head of the shiba clans BRANCH family, if he was the head of the family in general that would make him related to kukaku, ganju and kaien siblings

Only thing I would have liked to see explored more is his connection to the Shiba clan. Due to the importance of the clan members in the story it would have been an interesting interaction. Also not sure if Ichigo knew he was related to the Shiba clan. Does anyone know if he was aware?
I'm more curious if Uryu reacts to the fact that their parents were cousins. He tolerates Ichigo, but possibly would have complicated feelings about actually being related.

Shiba clan used to be one of the pillar noble clans untill Isshin dishonored clan by leaving duty due to his sacrifice to save quincy woman ,shinigami dont retire unless they grow old and find valid substitute (just like in case of byakuya's grandfather) Urahara explained to Hyori that thoose who choose to leave on their own get chased down by punishment squad and trown into prison .

Poor Naruto, has his real dad give up his life to save him on the same day he is born, has his dad ask Hiruzen for one thing in his final breaths, to protect and look after Naruto... and then Hiruzen proceeds to let Naruto run wild across the village, live alone in a run down studio apartment room, and eat instant noodles for every meal, and maybe some spoiled milk thrown in for dessert once in a while, all while Naruto is like not even a teen yet, just a poor little kid living alone..... you had one job, "grandpa" Hiruzen.... smh

One of the things I wish had happened was linking Ginjou with Isshin in some way. It would add more depth into the backstory of Ginjou and more weight into his motivation. I would have made Isshin the Shinigami who Ginjou was closest to and the Shinigami who "killed" him. I think it would've made the fullbring arc much more accepted and would've added to the mystery of Isshin.

He’s wonderful! I love seeing a great parent character, especially one who is still alive.
Him rescuing, then settling down with and raising a family with Masaki in a way foreshadows the general peace and reconciliation that Shinigami and Quincy would undergo after the TBW thus showing how supposedly mortal enemies can cast away the hate. The loss of Masaki sure steeled his resolve to give their family the peaceful normal lives that eluded the Spirit worlds they came from.
Isshin has been one of my favorite characters in bleach since Ichigo fought the grand fisher
One detail you got mistaken on, Ishin didn't brought Aizen to his shinigami limit. What Aizen was saying is that his limit as a shinigami was reached since he was about to transform, plus the hoguoku was draining his reiatsu
And I really hope when the anime comes back, they will show off Isshin and Ryuken skills

Pretty late to watching this but had some more general questions about the Shiba clan and how Isshin's departure from Soul Society affected his clan. Love these analysis of characters! It's always great watching these! Brings so much discussion and its great for how much modern fans disregard Bleach. It keeps me up to date with Bleach and its characters! Thanks so much DBZimran!

I read in a fan forum quoting an interview with Kubo Tite that Kaien and his siblings are children of Isshin's older brother.. will be searching for that info soon

I like how you avoided all the spoilers, even though the manga and anime has been out for years...
I thought getsuga might be a Shiba technique too but since we see that nowhere else in Bleach, passed down techniques, I think it’s more likely that they have the same ability and similar zanpakuto names because Isshin poured all his reiatsu into Masaki and she transferred that to Ichigo which is why they are the only two people we see using the same zanpakuto techniques. Hoping they give him and Ryuken more screen time in the anime since Kubo is going to expound on the rushed aspects of the manga from what I’ve read.
I think it's a mix. I think Zanpakuto powers may be vaguely hereditary, but also the Hollow White may have, in a way "copied" parts of Isshin's powers as it was a Hollow that was fused with Isshin's genetic Shinigami abilities to become a Hollowfied Zanpakuto Spirit.
The reason I think this is because Kaien's Zanpakuto had absolutely no relation to having the Getsuga ability, or even having "Getsu" in it's name. His powers were totally unique, and he was part of the Shiba Clan.
On the other hand how many Soul Reaper families do we actually see:
-> Kuchiki-Clan, we never saw Byakuyas Grandfather in action nor is Rukia related by blood.
-> Youruichi and her brother-> Again, both dont really make use of their Zanpakutou, but mastered their kind of Shunpo/hand-to-hand combat.
Only evidence that every Zanpakutou is totally different is the second Bleach movie......which isn´t canon and basically Hitsugaya Fanservice.
Isshin was always an underestimated characteristic loved & sensed had a much grander role. He is my 2nd fav character, after Ichigo.
