- Finally we are diving into the vizards from BLEACH starting with their leader Shinji Hirako, a former captain of the Gotei 13 who was exiled from the Soul Soceity during the Turn Back the Pendulum arc. In this video I analyse the past of Shinji, going over his first chronological appearance within the story all the way up until the latest chapter of Bleach. Shinji was the former captain of the 5th division, his leuitenant was none other than Sosuke Aizen, which means that his character shares a significant history with Aizen, I explain their relationship in this video including the role that Shinji plays within the story!

@@drkoldness3529 there’s actually a lot of biblical references in bleach. Quincys as a whole is a reference to christianity. An example is the quincy using a cross and Yhwach is a play on YHWH in the bible meaning God in Hebrew

I like how his initially mysterious persona and then goofy elements hides his pure badassery before he unleashes it. Him going against Aizen was was awesome even if he was seriously injured. What added to his repertoire was seeing his more ruthlessly practical side in CFYOW with his Zanpakuto's main ability. In a way it shows how his his harsh experiences have unsurprisingly affected him.
@Dark Ginobli he explained it cause it wouldn't matter. Also, he hide the info vission changing which lead to him hitting aizen, had he not aizen would have not been hit at all.
Fun fact Shinji is also, at the points, the captain of the DRIP DIVISION. HIS FITS THROUGHOUT THE STORY ARE JUST NEXT LEVEL

We actually do know what Shinji’s Bankai is as it is revealed during the Can’t Fear Your Own World light novel. It’s name is Sakashima Yokoshima Happofusagari and its has a large area of effect and inverts the enemies sense of friend and foe causing friends to kill each other and foes to love each other. The ability is so dangerous that he is not allowed to use it while in the presence of other members of the Gotei 13.

Under right circumstances he could destroy whole soul society in one attack. He would need to tell everyone at once that he is a traitor, activate his bankai and now whole soul society tries to kill each other and see Shinji as their only ally

his Bankai is actually absurdly scary - and it can be used even less frequently than Shunsui's.
It's confirmed by kubo that cfyow is canon yes. it's the only novel series of bleach which is canon. Shinji's bankai is banned from being used since it effects everyone around him, but that is why when he used it it looked so busted

Shinji and the vizards had an amazing build up and made me so hyped especially when they showed up in fake karakura but even I have to admit that they were done dirty ever since their fight with aizen
Totally agree with you, the way they were presented in this fight, and every other major fight, doesn't justify them being Captains. I just think Tite Kubo wasted their huge potential despite the thrilling build up for them.

He's actually very intelligent too. I'd say he's close to bein on par with Aizen and Kisuke. This man knew Aizen's every step and even Aizen himself compliments his keen eyes. When he tore down Aizen's disguise when he was hiding, I dropped my jaw lmao. He many not have been strong enough to beat Aizen, but that moment showed that Shinji was aware of Aizen's weakness: Arrogance. That eventually led to his downfall in the future.
Always loved Shinji, he’s like Kisuke lite. He doesn’t have that morally grey personality like Kisuke and he’s not as practically brilliant but he’s very intuitive and has great instincts, and we all know Sakanade would’ve been so bad ass had we not all ready been introduced to Kyoka Suigetsu. He’s great any way you slice it, too bad he didn’t get to show out in TYBW. Still love how Kubo telegraphed Shinji’s power to us by him being upside down and writing backwards long before we saw his ability.
Shinji Hirako is one of, if not my favorite captain/vizard in Bleach, for some reason. I do agree that he wasn’t used to his fullest extent but I love his design and his dynamic with Aizen. Also, Shinji’s Bankai was revealed in the Can’t Fear Your Own World light novel. It’s called Sakashima Yokoshima Happoufusagari.
After hearing Shinji's new theme we can say with certainty. Shinji is a certified rizzard.

The minute I saw this guy he became one of my favourite anime characters of all time, I don't care about power scaling but this guy is badass. His style in music and clothes is exactly amazing which inspired me to dress up as him for Halloween.

I've started re-reading Bleach again and it's cool to appreciate Bleach for just being Bleach. Too many times I've seen people comparing Bleach to the other big three (myself included) without just appreciating it. I think the best way to enjoy the series is to just read or watch the series just to have a good time.

Shinji is also responsible for one of my favorite lines in the series, the "miscalculations" line at the end of the Turn Back the Pendulum arc.
Also, given what we learn about Shinji's Bankai in the Can't Fear Your Own World novel, it is my headcanon that Kubo originally planned Shinji to be the one to defeat Gerard in the TYBW arc.

@@lukepichler8881 Well, according to the novel, Shinji's Bankai takes things further and instead of inverting directions it actually inverts concepts. In the novel Shinji uses it to make an army of monsters turn on each other because he Bankai lets him transform "friend into foe".
My headcanon is that Shinji would have applied his Bankai's effect onto Gerard's Miracle reversing its effect, dooming Gerard instead of empowering him.

@@lukepichler8881 Given the rushed natured of the ending, my guess that Kubo had to choose between giving the Gerard fight a proper ending or have the three most popular Captain team finally team up, and the obviously chose the latter. lol

There are a lot of cool and interesting events that occur in the novel, Can't Fear Your Own World, that I'd like to see animated. It would make for a decent if not great non/semi filler arc to go between TYBWa and the Hell Arc.
It never ceases to amaze me how Kubo ties everything together so well from arc to arc - the way that he planned out concepts years in advance is mind boggling

I really dug shinji as a character i loved his personality and design i just wish he did more after fake karakura i would of loved to of seen his bankai hope gets more justice down i think it would of been better if they didn't go back to the gotei 13 i would have just left them be as they were or have them work alongside kisuke from the distance.
True that. Him getting revenge on Aizen would've been something were it not for the latter's OP state. Still at least he lived with the others to see Aizen ultimately defeated and imprisoned so that counts for something.

I had no idea that Shinji was featured in the first chapter. I imagine that he was planned to be one of Ichigo's friends since he's featured with the rest of them. Then Kubo would pull a twist and reveal that he was a Vizard.
Shinji was one of my favorite characters and I was also disappointed he didn't get more fight time and more influence on the story. Thanks for the analysis!

Hurray~ So glad you finally did an analysis on Shinji. The man has been my favorite in BLEACH forever.
Thought I'd throw something out there about Shinji too: Tite Kubo has a tendency to pair his characters up into male-female dynamics in order to bring out parts of them that otherwise wouldn't go explored. With Shinji, his relationship with Hiyori immediately stood out to me as unique compared to his relationship to the other Vizards since she's the only one who can banter and rough house with him on a daily basis despite their rank difference. With Hiyori being a lieutenant and Shinji being a Captain, the fact that they're able to talk to each other like high school kids is a huge indicator of how close their relationship actually is. Which is later confirmed by Captain Hikifune when she said it was rare to see Shinji without Hiyori by his side. Shinji knew how hard Hiyori was taking the loss of Hikifune after she was promoted since she was like a Mother to her and his talk with Urahara was also for her sake since he wanted to help her get adjusted to her new Captain. When Urahara told the Captains about Hiyori's endangerment, Shinji was the first one to come to her defense despite Lisa being sent ahead of the others. Which tells the readers and audience that Shinji Shunpoed there like his life depended on it. Then it's worth noting that the brief battle between him, Kensei, and Mashiro was all done one-handed since he refused to put Hiyori down despite his own defense being lowered due to carrying her. Only when she started to transform did he let her go after she struck him. When Hiyori even attempts to help Shinji, despite going through the hollowfication process herself, she gets cut down by Tosen which prompts Shinji to attack him and battle with him in an attempt to save her life. In doing this, Tite Kubo demonstrated the deep bond these two have and how their relationship grew after their exile from the Soul Society. Even during the Can't Fear Your Own World (CFYOW) novels, despite being separated now with one in the Soul Society and the other in Karakura town, they constantly bring the other up in conversation and Shinji even gives Hisagi the task of teasing Hiyori for him when he goes to Karakura Town to interview Urahara. Shinji and Hiyori are mutually provocative and they're not afraid to rough house but they're also extremely protective of the other and their relationship is one of the more personal dynamics within the Vizards. As I said before, Tite Kubo has a thing for putting his male and female characters together in relationships that bring out the parts of them that otherwise wouldn't go explored and when it comes to their relationship I think that it goes overlooked by a majority of BLEACH fans even though they have the most interaction together in the series within the entire Vizard group.

Tho his bankai is similar to Shunsui's bankai, it cant be used with others around.
He would be one of the most effective fighters in Bleach if only he'd stopped explaining how him damn abilities worked. The same goes for Rose.

Shinji had captain level physical abilities and a utility shikai. Kubo did Shinji wrong by not only having him fight bambietta but also not using Kido. Kido in bleach is underrated especially when it's supposed to be essentially the main abilities for most shinigami. It would've been very interesting to see Shinji be a master kido user, capable of fighting captains with bankais. So something like Shinji using Kido to block Bambietta and pin her down to defeat her or just give him a different match up but I still can barely see how he can use his physical abilities to defeat other Sternritters since they were just that OP, cutting them down would definitely not work since some of them are almost immune to physical damage or untouchable.
I'm assuming the vizards also couldn't use their masks because of how Quincy counters Hollow, iirc quincy powers literally disintegrate hollow powers.
Regardless, it would've been very interesting for Shinji to use his bankai to do a 1v10 against all the sternritters like Ichigo did when he burst in. Shinji could've appeared then and used his bankai to solo them all, but I guess that would ruin Kubo's planned moment of Ichigo's friends reappearing.
Shunji is an awesome and different type of character in the series to aid Ichigo and his powers. I hope you add more Visvored characters like him later on.
Shinji is definitely underrated hopefully cfyow is animated so we get some more bad@$$ moments especially his bankai reveal

I'm convinced Shinji had to have known Aizen was involved with Ichigo's inner hallow. But besides that Shinji is a badads always thought he was one of the coolest characters bleach has.
Shinji is my favorite character by far in the series and there are so many reasons why. I wanted to watch this video becauese I knew you would put into words some of the reasonsing I love this character that I havent been able to express myself. Him and Kisuke being almost mirror characters in their look(blonde, slim, mysterious.) their demeanor (relaxed and layed back) and their role to Ichigo as a teacher. im only 5 minutes in and im sure theres more to come!

Super underrated and underutilized but I actually highly praise Kubo for at least allowing them to maintain relevance throughout the story as we see that post Fullbring Arc, Shinji, Rose & Kensei return to the Gotei 13 as captains. Not only this, but post TYBW we see that Lisa has also taken a captain's position for Kyoraku's former squad 8.

Some people say Kubo's a bad writer and doesn't plan anything, but seeing Shinji appear in that very first page of Bleach just confirms & validates Kubo's forethought and in depth planning. It implies _so much_ about where Kubo wanted to take Ichigo's Hollowfication, and the upheavals in the Gotei that led to the Vizards & Urahara's exile.

To be honest at first I didn't like Shinji but after this video I really realized what another great character that Kubo has created! :D
Shinji is one of my favourite characters in the whole of Bleach if not my all out favourite, I just wish Kubo felt at least somewhat the same way. Let's hope Kubo feels some of that Shinji love for the Hell arc.
His bankai is quite interesting since it definitely has the potentially to became close to reality class.
This because since he capable of reversing direction, up and down, left and right. Then if this was taken further then he could have come up with the ability to reverse damage and turn it into healing.
With his bankai he achieve a lot of things like reversing the affects of light and basically becoming invisible. There's more but it requires more thinking and pondering over.

I don't want to offend anyone here but I always felt like the Vizards were just filling in the blanks for captains that were stronger than them. I mean even Shinji's Op bankai can be nagaded if the opponent has a higher reiatsu like Yamamoto, Aizen, Ichigo and Yhwach or outplayed by Urahara and Kurotsuchi

While I agree for the most part, the fanbase really needs to stop using that “higher spiritual pressure negation” argument for while an ability is worthless.
I know it's true to the lore of Bleach, but evidence has shown it be inconsistent and having only happened once.
Aizen is literally the only person who has achieved that feat in the entire anime. To make matters worse, if that feat was actually consistent throughout the entirety of the story, then Gin's bankai should have never affected Aizen and Kisuke's kido should have affected Aizen, because even if the hoguko rejected Aizen, he still has a much higher spirtual that's on another level to everyone except Ichigo.
So, while yes, I agree on your take, I do not agree with your reasoning behind it. On top of that, Shinji and Rose at the very least deserve their positions - both of their abilities are overpowered, it is just that they suffer from shonen logic.
Considering the fact that he was a previous Captain makes every complaints Hiyori had for him when she was first introduced make perfect sense XD "Why are you being follow?" "Why haven't you completed such a simple task?" XD
