Real Scenes: Mexico City | Resident Advisor

  • Life in the Mexican capital throws up many obstacles, but as we found out in the return of our long-running film series, a small number of dedicated people are trying to build an electronic music scene in one of the world's most chaotic cities.
    Mexico City is one of the largest and most vibrant metropolises in the world, but its electronic music scene has yet to truly flourish. It's a city where vast inequality, crime and widespread corruption are everyday realities, and where nightclubs are largely reserved for the moneyed elites. For those who put music first, there are many obstacles-a lack of venues, a limited audience, very little financial gain. Whether you're putting on parties, releasing music or hustling for gigs, making ends meet is a constant struggle.
    But the issue also runs deeper. Malinchismo, which means a preference for the foreign over the local, is a term you hear a lot in Mexico City, and it spills over into all aspects of life. In dance music, Mexican fans and DJs will avidly follow artists from Berlin or London but pay little attention to national talent. The domestic scene therefore suffers, unable to develop an identity of its own.
    In our latest Real Scenes film we travelled to the colourful, chaotic capital to meet the people who are trying to make dance music work in Mexico City. We found a core community as dedicated, talented and passionate as any in the world.

    I’m from LA and my mom is from Mexico City, dad from Argentina. I lived a few years in Mexico City and visited my whole life. It’s truly a special place for me. The music and arts scene is in their blood. Many have no idea just what an amazing culture they have respectable of being admired worldwide.
    It’s September 2022 as I type this. Many Americans and foreigners are currently living and/or visiting Mexico City more than ever. It makes me so happy that so many people are now discovering the local Mexican talent and the special energy of this city that cannot be found anywhere else. Mexican DJs, please know that the world is not only watching you, but listening to you closely and cheering you on. Everyone is excited to be a part of something so special, that is in many cases more attractive than any other American or European music scene.

    We are what we hear.

    I really don't know shit about what it's like in Mexico City beyond what's in this documentary (which is very well done btw), but in regards to how the artists there could forge their own unique sound and identity, I recommend taking a look into how other styles of music started.
    Heavy metal started with bands like Black Sabbath in late '60s Birmingham, England, which was this very bleak, desolate, and heavily industrialized place. That environment had a direct impact on Sabbath's sound (especially given that their guitarist lost two of his fingertips in a factory accident and had to adapt his playing style).
    Detroit Techno developed in similarly desolate, industrialized settings, but with some key differences. Detroit used to be this bustling city with a booming economy, center of the nation's entire automobile industry, but once the assembly line workers were replaced by robots, people lost their jobs and abandoned the city. In an almost literal sense, the machines took over and people became obsolete. That kind of environment is reflected in the sound of techno.
    I could go on, but what I'm trying to get at here is that you don't necessarily have to look into your culture's traditional music to create your own unique artistic identity, especially if you feel like the styles don't mesh well. Instead you can just try to evoke the feeling and atmosphere of your environment. What does it *feel* like to walk through Mexico City, and how can you represent that musically?
    Just from this video, I hear that it's a place "full of contrasts," with rich areas and poor areas right next to each other, warm friendly people but also a lot of violence and danger possibly lurking around any corner, a rich culture but also a lack of confidence and constant struggles with political, social, and economic problems.
    I'm not Mexican so it really isn't my place to decide where this all goes, but just going off of that description alone, I could hear potential for some really really cool music. Warm and peaceful vibes, but with a constant underlying tension, and it could all very abruptly become violent and aggressive in the blink of an eye, so it could be very unpredictable. The traditional Mexican influences could be there too, but they wouldn't even be necessary to come up with something unique that really feels authentically Mexican.
    So yeah... Probably not really my business, but I just felt like putting that out there. I'd love to hear some creative new music from Mexico City.

    • @isaacaguilar1813
      @isaacaguilar1813 8 лет назад

      +Patrick Tow I'm no musician so, it's really not my business to give advice on music either, but something I find really interesting/amusing is just how the world perceives or wants to perceive the Mexican people. This point became even more apparent to me in the last James Bond movie "Spectre". In that film, you could see the whole downtown area flooded with people dressed up in beautiful colorful costumes for the day of the day parading down the street, leading down to the main square in Mexico City... Nothing close the reality, heck they even did it better than we do,! LOL. So, my point is, I believe that music that would sound truly Mexican, an authentic Mexican sound, would go over the world's head as their expectations of what Mexican music should sound like are closer to Mariachi (no, we don';t listen to Mariachi in our everyday lives) than to what we enjoy. And that's another problem. Mexico has been sooo Americanized that it's a true challenge for some of us to tell where our likes and dislikes come from...

      +Isaac Aguilar yo man, interesting comments, mexico looks like a cool place, but there seems to be a struggle to gain recognition but at the same time not give a shit about what the outside world thinks. Im from australia and we are similar in lacking confidence in our own scenes compared to the US! Best thing to do is just not give a fuck and immerse yourself in your own culture hopefully creating something interesting and worthwhile...

    Wow, such an amazing work. This short film truly reflects the problems in the perception of Mexicans to its culture; idolizing others for their success while instead of learning and building on those ideas, oppressing their culture to simply be the beholders of something they could completely revolutionize. Music has so much power and Mexicans have always been a true symbol of musical joy which unifies our people.

      You don't need a visa to come, and the houses .. Well you can say they are cheap, only if I recommend you make a saving. From my point of view if you don't go crazy with the disorder Mexico City will not make you bad, if you find something. Because if yours is the beach, I would go to Huatulco found in the state of Oaxaca, it is a place that I love, and about two hours there is Puerto Escondido, many surfers around the world they go because they say the waves are great. Guanajuato is elsewhere, for the month of March to April, there come to compete for the World Rally Championship More to the north Like this Monterrey is just less populated than the capital city. But there is no way to come and give you a better idea, and if you plan to live here, believe that will spend well. I leave some links, the first is the foreign secretary and the second is the board of touristy promotion. Mexico City is pretty beautiful, unique, full of history, traditions, delicious food for all he budgets, warm amazing people at the same time pretty modern and cosmo. Everytime I go there, have lots of fun, always somewhere to go, the city has Live. Agree it has some problems and areas of improvement, but not too different as other cities in the world. Bottom Line Mexico's capital it's a city that every Mexican should be proud off and also locals should work on the things that needs and can be improved to drive the city where it needs to be and make it a safer place Love Mexico City!

    I know many old school profesional artists that been developing this city underground, but didnt apear here, where is Alvaro Ruiz, Kampion, MHV, Itzone, Jerga, Redeker Kupa and many others. i really dont feel this work necesary reflects what this place is about culturaly, most of people featured in, are the new generation that aparently doesnt even know who where and are the ones before, that been pushing and supporting electronic music since late 90´s

    opiniones distintas, gente diferente! A los Mexicanos siempre...siempre nos molesta que otro Mexicano se supere. Somos mas racista que los vecinos. Necesitamos cambiar nuestra mentalidad de siglos pasados. Del caos pueden sobre salir cosas muy lindas e uniformes.

      +Exospheredweller en serio llevaste historia? Hace 1000 años no existía un país llamado México, ni siquiera estaban los aztecas, y en los países ricos hace mil años aun vivían en la Edad Media, la mayoría viviendo en una pobreza extrema y de pestes. Las cosas cambian, no por etnias sino por idiosincrasia. De donde seas ve quédate intoxicadote tu sólo con tus ideas tóxicas y llenas de ignorancia, porque a nadie mas le sirven.

    Andromeda, Rimel, Danzoo, La Tirana, Pervert Lounge and the list goes on of places that weren't posh with an even bigger list of artists from CDMX. Point being that the city's scene precedes what this beautiful and well intended video documents. Unfortunate cus as much as i get inspiration from all this really talented people, i know that City has much more stories to share. It comes across as if nothing existed until now and its just not true.

    Mexico is badass but it's crazy how in the US Mexicans here like me are more Mexican than Mexicans out there. We listen to banda, corridos, and norteñas. We wear boots and sombreros and in Mexico City seems like they are trying to like what's outside of Mexico like EDM and rock. It's crazy maybe because of the conquest but like electronic music it ain't Mexican music. Banda is Mexican, Mariachi is Mexican. Etc.

    • @theancientwizard8993
      @theancientwizard8993 7 лет назад

      What are you trying to say?, so if you don't listen to certain type of music you are less mexican........... naahhh been mexican is about other things, modern banda is not even a true representation of mexican culture, modern banda its like some sort of plastic pop here.
      I listen all type of genres and trust me, the music you listen is not what mexicanism is about. And I live in CDMX.

    • @elvaledecolima
      @elvaledecolima 7 лет назад

      Antonio Aguilera yes banda is somewhat pop but no other culture is bumping banda or mariachi. Unlike EDM is international or salsa which is Caribbean... you get me. Unlike banda is about corridos in Mexico and stories of Mexican love. Cmon don't tell me sonidero is not a rip off salsa cumbia colombiana. My cuzzen in Mexico City dresses like a rocker and is dark like a frijol and I'm more paisa and look white... I dunno it's weird

    • @javierpompa5935
      @javierpompa5935 7 лет назад +1

      Your comment about banda and norteños and what makes you Mexican, is weak. And gives the impression that your idea of the "Mexicaness" is limited what you watch on Univision or what you can interpret from el Komander.
      Mexico is a country like most others, constantly diversifying its tastes (including music) and evolving through through cultural exchange. It's complex.
      And by the way, Banda and Norteños came from European immigrants introducing the instruments and polka style to Mexico.
      Widen your scope, homie

    • @elvaledecolima
      @elvaledecolima 7 лет назад

      Javier Pompa I get you man but I honestly love all music but in my humble perspective it seems like Mexico City is apart from the rest of Mexico. In many ways and of course it doesn't mean you're less Mexican but like I said ranchero, banda or norteña music is identified to the history of Mexico. For example the Mexican revolution. I mean Mexico City is special but like I said if a European visits Mexico for the first time and they listen to caifanes or Mexican EDM, they'll probably think it's being copied from europe...... I mean who listens to banda, mariachi, or norteñas other than Mexicans??..... haha maybe not people from DF... I don't think my comment or perspective is weak because that is what I see and I have been to both places.... not sure if you have been in the US?

    I am an American and I hate when other countries say all Americans are racist and bad and any other !! We have awesome citizens here!! Just like I hate it when I here people talking shit about people from another country. I've heard for years that Mexicans are lazy, too lazy to improve their own country so they illegally come to America where it is better! I don't believe that Mexicans are lazy!! I do believe they have for generations been told by, not only their own government, but by other countries that they are not good enough, so it seems most believe that lie!!! I think that, if enough, Mexicans get tired of their corrupt country men that keep getting rich off of the poor, start working for and striving to make their country great, I think that a majority of Mexicans could get together to keep their government honest, and start attracting business minded Mexicans so build up honest companies that could employ Mexican citizens at fair wages!! America didn't become a wealthy nation over night, it took time and good people winning over the bad people! The majority of Americans are good, hard working people. Just like ,I'm willing to bet, so are the Mexican people!! I've been to Tijuana twice. The first time we went, I saw the slums as my husband and I crossed over from the US, and it broke my heart!! I wasn't expecting to see the poverty right there, so close. The absolute poorest people I have ever seen. I was overwhelmed by it all. We stayed only until the sun started to set. The second time we went was after the bad flood. I could not believe that the whole slum area was gone!! We found out, after talking to some venders, that a lot of the poor, that lived in those slum, died because they weren't evacuated, and they were too poor to really go anywhere else!! It was hard not to cry, because children were among the dead. I wish I could have done something, but again, I was overwhelmed by the huge need!! The government should have helped the poor more than they did!! I know charities from other countries tried to help, but I'm not sure the money went to the citizens, I think it lined the pockets of corrupt politicians. I have known many Mexicans that were very nice, compassionate people!! I even knew some illegal immigrants that only wanted to raise their children in a good and safe place. Some even wanted to go back to their home towns but knew they couldn't make a good future there for their kids!! I would love to see Mexico succeed and be a great country for the people!! Not all of us in America think Mexico is full of lazy, thieving, drug addicts!! I like to find the good in people, and I would love to visit Mexico again, one day!!
