I love the X1 carbon line but they are really tricky with thermal management, mostly they suck at it. I repasted the CPU, and then loaded up ThrottleStop. I have it set to cap the CPU at 3.1GHZ which is plenty, also I set it to better performance on battery not BEST as it eats battery life. Also a quick .75mv undervault, and basically this beast runs at 40-55c all day long with no complaints, without doing this I was running 60-80c all day long. So with a little work these X1's are some of the best on the market.
I know this is older, but there is an SD Card on the Carbon X1's. It's on the back, same place as the SIM slot is for the devices with LTE. It isn't full size though, only micro I mention it as the Gen 6 Carbon X1 is still a viable option today
@@bmp713 No more than any other Laptop PC. The new X1 Carbons have better speakers than this model, which is now 3 years old, but they are laptops and no laptop has brilliant speakers, unless you go high end gaming. The X1 is designed for high end business use.

Its important to note that he mentioned an SD card slot which is present on the older thinkpads (fthe X1C1 for sure), a microSD card slot does the same job without the convenience of a full sized SD card slot on the side of the laptop. Its not like he missed it, its just less convenient.
Glad someone pointed this out. If I had watched this and not known anything about the laptop, I would've assumed there was no SD slot (micro or otherwise) and likely decided against getting one! Still an awesome review otherwise, though imo
Just ordered mine with a FHD non-touch display and i7-8550U, 16GB RAM. Super excited because even honest, genuine reviews like this one haven't scared me a bit! Should make a great everyday laptop. Heat is my only concern, but with high performance chips and tiny carbon/magnesium cases, theres not a whole lot you can do :-/
Somehow never saw these comments. It's now been almost 3 years and it's still going strong except the battery has lost some capacity (but I leave it plugged-in almost 100% of the time, and don't limit it to 80% charge, so I knew I was not treating it well). The computer definitely gets hot when you're using it a lot, and you have to be mindful of covering up the fan intake if you're using it on your lap or a soft surface, but it hasn't caused any issues...just don't use it in direct sunlight. Black metal casing + beating sun = overheating! No popping with the headphone jack except for the usual when you plug in or unplug, but, admittedly, I don't have that much experience with it because I almost always use Bluetooth. The speakers, I hate to say, are pretty lame. Totally fine for conference calls, and decently loud, but tinny. Honestly I find this to be a fantastic business laptop and, after using it 8-10 hours a day 5 days a week since buying it, I still don't feel like a need a newer one and it still blows me away with how thin and light it is. Oh, and I use the Trackpoint *constantly* lol
I have an X1 Carbon 5th Gen and I found switching to Ubuntu helped my temps/fans a lot. Windows has way too many processes that feel intrusive to my workflow. I know Linux isn't a viable option for a lot of professions, though. Just curious, how do you clean your laptop?
I ordered the new XPS 13 9380 (i7, 512 GB SSD with 4k Display) from dell's website but I had to return twice (once due to rattling touchpad and once due to half build product- I could see the penny size gap on the back) and just ordered thinkpad x1 carbon. What's going on with the PC market theses days? Apple- terrible butterfly keyboard and took away all userful ports, Dell- Unexpected quality control issues (rattling trackpad, coil whining, overheating), HP- stopped making real laptops; just makes X360s. Decided to try Lenovo, let's see how it goes.
I don't know what all are doing with their laptops. I repaste my cpu, and test temps. I load up CC CLeaner for Reg Edit cleaner, I load up Malware Pro for my Anti-Virus and I do all the updates on the PC including BIOS and what not. I don't have a single issue with my 6th gen, it literally runs flawless.
You sure do. I have a bit of an interest in retro computing and picked those up to play around with the floppy drive on an Inspiron 4000 (the original Pentium 3 one) I picked up a few months ago.
Do you keep your machine on performance mode all the time? I think this is the reason behind your complaints on battery life and the fan running all the time.

I used the X1 fingerprint reader the first couple days I had it, and it had the same issue. YMMV though.
What’s up big fella, great video. I am enjoying my gen 7 thinkpad x1 carbon. How is the screen holding up? I’m just cleaning it with a microfiber cloth, have you ever tried to use alcohol wipes for the screen or the keys??
Thanks Don. Screen has held up mostly well, but I do have one spot where there's a white mark on dark backgrounds from where it must have been pushed against the keyboard with a bit of force. That's a relatively recent development, so I may have simply gotten a bit careless after babying it a while. I've used alcohol wipes 2-3 times to clean up the palm rest/lid, but it doesn't seem to make any difference in how long it takes to get dirty, and no doubt would damage the finish if done enough. I never use alcohol wipes on any screen. Even if coatings have changed and it's now ok, I'd rather play it safe than sorry on the display.

Microsoft actually released an update about 8 months after I made this video that fixed the mixed scaling issue. I've used various combinations of scaling since then with no issues, so I wouldn't worry about it.

It does pretty well with short videos in Premiere Pro and After Effects, and I'm sure an eGPU would make a big difference in playback, which definitely can be slow to pre-render with effects applied. For making longer 4k videos (above 5 minutes) I'd prefer a desktop or a beefier laptop with an H-series CPU, but this is probably one of the better ultrabooks for the task, as I've yet to have it throttle below boost speeds and it's easy to get into if you need to clean the fans or want to repaste for even lower temps.

Wiping it down with a microfiber cloth does a decent job of hiding fingerprints by spreading them out evenly. Once it gets really gunked up, I'll wipe it down with a damp washcloth then dry it with a clean washcloth. Unfortunately there's really no way to keep it fingerprint free aside from wearing gloves.
Hi, the paint of my x1 carbon has started to wear, off, and I can start to see a doted line appearin at he bottom of the palm rest- is this the case for you as well?

hey there! thanks for sharing your experience with the x1. I have a question: how is the coil whine/fan noise situation? I am considering picking one up myself for uni but I tend to be very sensitive when it comes to noise output from my laptops. If you could give me a short feedback on that, that'd be highly welcome :D
No coil whine at all on mine, fortunately. The fan is audible at times, but I don't really notice it that often. That said, I spend almost all of my time with it in a noisyish office environment and am not that sensitive to fan noise, so YMMV.

Paint comes off easily, even if you take care of it very well (it's starting to peel off at 0:43), the X1 also has display lid issues and the keyboard quality is a lottery. I would get the XPS 13 instead - eventhough the Dell's keyboard has a very low key travel and no trackpoint. www.tomshardware.com/news/lenovo-laptop-quality-control-issues,37510.html
Really good question. A basic comparison (www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i3-8130U-vs-Intel-i5-6200U/3225vs2556) seems to favor the 8th Gen i3, and looking at the specs, it does appear to have the edge, at least comparing the i5-6200u to the i3-8130u. Clock speeds are similar, but the 8th gen i3 has a larger cache and slightly updated graphics. Another factor you may want to consider is the quality of the rest of the machine, if you're looking at laptops. One of the reasons I had to look up stats on the i3 is that they often get used in laptops that are unfortunately a bit junky. While you may sacrifice a bit of CPU performance, getting a two-year-old mid-range to high-end laptop can be a better purchase, as you get a better screen and build quality.
Lots of processor heat & throttling, fan on right hand side (most mouse users are right handed), case & lit covered in fingerprints, screen scaling issues, no SD card slot, average keyboard, compared to other Thinkpad models, average battery performance ..... otherwise a pretty darn awesome laptop.
It's doing great great. I have one spot around the back left corner where I lost some coating, but it's very small and doesn't seem to be spreading. All else is peachy and it's been running perfectly the whole time.
Biggest pro for the X1 is build quality and the availability of 16GB of RAM. As a second machine to use around the house or in meetings I really love the Yoga's style and touch-screen, but the RAM limits it as a do-everything laptop and I think the X1 will hold up better for a student or business user frequently moving it around. Primary machine or if you write a lot, get the ThinkPad. Second machine for light use at home and occasional vacations, save some money and get the Yoga.
Sorry for the delayed reply. The T480 for sure solves the battery life issue. It's a beast in that regard. Thermals definitely should be better as well with the same configuration, since the T480 is built to support a dedicated graphics card, meaning the cooling should be well equipped for integrated graphics. Weight is the obvious drawback, as it's over a pound heavier. If you need the battery life though, being able to leave the charger at home could help offset that. If price isn't an issue, it really comes down to battery + ports vs extra portability and cool factor.

That wouldn't be a good deal in the US, though I've heard that used ThinkPad prices can be quite a bit higher in Europe. I would have a hard time paying more than $550 for even a nice 3rd Gen X1 unless it was literally new. Like I said though, the market may be different where you are.
@@fjolublar From what I've seen on reddit, Germany is the one European country that seems to have almost as many ThinkPads as the US. They seem to be popular at colleges there, so maybe checking classifieds in college towns could help land a scoop. Good luck!
I’m considering getting this model for work. Wanted to ask, which dock did you go with and which cord do you use in order to connect to your external monitor(s)?
Glad I went with a Mac 15" purchase vs a Thinkpad X1 Carbon. Been a long time user of Thinkpads but the build quality and little things like plugging in external monitors and it just working is something Windows 10 does not do well.
I haven't used a Macbook every day since 2009, though I've certainly spent time all newer models. The X1 Carbon's trackpad is worse in every way than a Macbook, but it's not horrible. There are 3 main drawbacks I've noticed compared to a Macbook (or even an excellent Windows trackpad): (1) clicks are kind of mushy, and it feels like a lot of travel, which can affect accuracy, (2) the small size by 2018 standards to accommodate the trackpoint buttons, and (3) it seems to get gunked up more easily (in both look and feel) than other glass trackpads. Like I said it doesn't suck, I never have had a problem with it doing anything weird and it feels nice, there are just many better trackpads out there.
@@AndrewThrasher1987 Thanks for the reply. This is a rather big concern for me as I've read reviews that the trackpad on lenovo's weren't the best and it seems like you may have confirmed that. I did re-paste the CPU and I do have TTFan control sometimes I load it up if it starts to really crank out some operations, but it's a smooth laptop.
My 6th gen has been in service 4 times for trackpad issues. The trackpad is horrible. I've read this version has quality control issues.
how you can you clean the laptop since it easily fingers stamps on this carbon material?
Wiping it down with a microfiber cloth does a decent job of hiding fingerprints by spreading them out evenly. Once it gets really gunked up, I'll wipe it down with a damp washcloth then dry it with a clean washcloth. Unfortunately there's really no way to keep it fingerprint free aside from wearing gloves.
@@AndrewThrasher1987 many thanks
my XC16 with i5-8250U battery life is around 12 hours with normal usage.
Hi, can you do a review on LCD see how does it show apps with and without scaling. Also usage with 100% scaling and max resolution.
I am not able to charge mine with samsung usb C charger, but lenovo adapter usb C. Do you think i am missing something ?
I want to know the name of your dock with external display . Thank you !
I use the ThinkPad Ultra Docking Station with it at work, with a 4k monitor running through DisplayPort at 60Hz.
Hi, the paint of my x1 carbon has started to wear, off, and I can start to see a doted line appearin at he bottom of the palm rest- is this the case for you as well?
You dont have any coating peeling? I heared that this version suffer a lot from broken edges coating after short time.
Hey I've owned this laptop for over a year and I haven't gotten any coating peeling.
Is it a metal frame still or plastic like the older ones? (Plastic was lighter and not ice cold to touch in winter)
Is that better to buy second hand Lenovo X1 carbon laptop?
How do you clean it of the smudges and fingerprints?
i used this with Linux and there are no heat issue for me. Specially when it comes to the programming and web researching there are no any heat issues..
Dead Blast What type of programming do you do on it?
Java and python. And also web programing. With at least 7 or 8 hours. It get warm some times but its not hot. Cooling system handle it. Some times i play small games and no issue for me. I have the core i5 intel UHD midel.
Did you do a dual boot? What type of distro did you use? How's the driver support? Thanks!
I have an X380 and it's the same. Windows will make the laptop hot while linux the fans don't spin at all. I get about 10 hours of online note taking with it.
@@vince_m_f1129 i used the dual boot. Yes. I use the wndows 10 and Ubuntu 2016 version. For that ubuntu version there are no fingerprint drivers. So that feature does not works. Otherwise all performed very well.
Why didn't you get a T480s?
X1 carbon 6th gen won't turn on it just blinks i just updated the java then later on shutting it down then later opening it won't turn on
Don't use Sophos and get rid of the overheating problem? These days using the built-in windows antivirus is probably the smartest way anyway.
@Zack Shippage Yeah, the problem is dramatically lessened at least, but there are rootkits and the like for Linux also. But I do have Kubuntu on several machines I use regularly.
hey there! thanks for sharing your experience with the x1.
That said, I spend almost all of my time with it in a noisyish office environment and am not that sensitive to fan noise, so YMMV.
hey should i buy a lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th / i5 8é Gén V-Pro Quad-Core / Ecran FULLHD IPS Tactile / 8 Go DDR4 / 512Go SSD NVMe Or
DELL Latitude E5490 comme neuf neuf / i5 8é Gén V-Pro/ 8Go DDR4 / 256Go SSD NVME /14" Full HD ( 200usd less than the lenovo )
Does anyone have issue with this model where the laptop restarts right after you shut it down?
i have read that there is micro sd in the back?
Have you tried using a Linux distro on it? If so how did it do?
I haven't used Linux on mine, since my work PC use is all Windows-based, but everything I've read suggests that it's a great machine for Linux. I think you'd need to disable safe boot in the BIOS, but could then install from a USB stick like any other computer.
Hey Andrew, is there much screen flex?
Paint comes off easily, even if you take care of it very well (it's starting to peel off at 0:43), the X1 also has display lid issues and the keyboard quality is a lottery. I would get the XPS 13 instead - eventhough the Dell's keyboard has a very low key travel and no trackpoint.

Saw you got a x230 over there
Almost, it's my T420s. Looks a lot like an X-series from the side.
Very nice. Im still rocking the x230 in 2018 🤣
I was right on the verge of picking up an X230 tablet on eBay earlier today. Love that classic wedge design!
@@AndrewThrasher1987 if you can get a good deal, its a really good laptop. Love the travel friendly size and small foot print.
Hey me too
I am running Windows 10. I downloaded the Lenovo updating updating software that updated the bios, and that fixed it.
Which is better core i 5 6th gen or core i 3 8th gen
@@AndrewThrasher1987 I'm Iraqi and I can't understand what write you .. please choose one ethier core i 3 8th gen or core i 5 6th gen

I am an engineering student and I want a laptop to study and engineering programs .. Any quality and specifications Buy! My budget is $ 600
color correction is warm. laptop color looks different.
I believe there's a micro SD slot in the Sim tray
How’s this machine running nowadays?
It's doing great great. I have one spot around the back left corner where I lost some coating, but it's very small and doesn't seem to be spreading. All else is peachy and it's been running perfectly the whole time.
@@AndrewThrasher1987 Thats awesome, i really want one. Apple has betrayed me smh lol
i like my t420
We have T420 in the office and it takes about 20min to start them and approx similar time to shut down...
Bernd Haverkock ouch, i’ve got an ssd in mine and it boots in under 30s
@Agnostic Realist that might be because boot times solely depend on storage speed and os
Hey people, can anyone help me with what specs should i go with this carbon x1? and Does it have a dedicated graphic card?
This one over the 730?
Biggest pro for the X1 is build quality and the availability of 16GB of RAM. As a second machine to use around the house or in meetings I really love the Yoga's style and touch-screen, but the RAM limits it as a do-everything laptop and I think the X1 will hold up better for a student or business user frequently moving it around. Primary machine or if you write a lot, get the ThinkPad. Second machine for light use at home and occasional vacations, save some money and get the Yoga.
Do you thing that on a thinjpad t480 these problems (battery life, termal issues) are solved? Do you thing it s weight is a big weak point?
Sorry for the delayed reply. The T480 for sure solves the battery life issue. It's a beast in that regard. Thermals definitely should be better as well with the same configuration, since the T480 is built to support a dedicated graphics card, meaning the cooling should be well equipped for integrated graphics. Weight is the obvious drawback, as it's over a pound heavier. If you need the battery life though, being able to leave the charger at home could help offset that. If price isn't an issue, it really comes down to battery + ports vs extra portability and cool factor.
Andrew Thrasher My only issue with the t480 is the screen quality. If it had a HDR screen it would be the pick of the thinkpad line up for me.
Weight shouldn't be an issue. The t480 is less than 4 pounds. The x1c6 is an ultralight, normal laptops aren't that heavy anymore.
hey, can the 6th gen with i7 8550U and uhd 620 edit video? with premiere pro cc and after effect?
Don't you undervolting it?
Xps13 ,x1 6th
What’s better?

2.4-2.5? The MacBook Pro 2018 does 3.1
Btw no scaling problems, and no battery life problems with the larger 2k screen
Nice walking MacBook advertisement.
is a X1 3rd Gen i7 worth it now in 2018 ? for 700 €
That wouldn't be a good deal in the US, though I've heard that used ThinkPad prices can be quite a bit higher in Europe. I would have a hard time paying more than $550 for even a nice 3rd Gen X1 unless it was literally new. Like I said though, the market may be different where you are.
@@AndrewThrasher1987Thank you for replying. Currently living in Germany :(
@@fjolublar From what I've seen on reddit, Germany is the one European country that seems to have almost as many ThinkPads as the US.
Beautiful machine.
Muy buen review. Gracias.
Me voy a comprar una. Esta de huevos.
Have you ever used a macbook before? How would you compare the track pad to the mac?
Ugh.... From everything else, it seems like the X1 Carbon ticks all the boxes.
Luckily, Lenovo has a 30 day warranty, so i'm going to bite the bullet and see how it goes.
Thanks for the review and your time. I really do appreciate it!
Displaying crazy heat levels from only running Excel, I would not bet these will have a long lifespan, I would say they will be a paperweight in under 3 years.
This laptop doesn't have a think shutter
both yoga 730 and xps13 are still better for you IMO but I can get why you would be attracted to the sexy x1 carbon......
I had this laptop, but i had to return it since it had a camera defect ;-;
Who on earth installs antivirus on Win10 when you have everything built in? Those are buggy memory hogs that destroy your computer
Corporations.
This laptop is good for programming
1:25 just use Linux. Problem solved.

thinkpads are the macbooks of the pc world
then what is a macbooks in a mac world?
Carlos Kim nope it’s the Matebook
I returned mine immediately because of coil whine.
Get the FHD Laptop screen? :-o Get a QHD monitor for work instead! There you go! You definitely can tell the difference on a 24 or 27 inch monitor!
Problem is Window.
X1 plus OLED please
Not for video rendering!!!

Nice
I own a thinkpad x260: the keyboard and mousepad looked old, consumed, after just 2 months.
A distinct "made in China" feel, thinkpad going down the drain.
And speaking of feel, all the praising in this video feels a lot like an ad.
FUBAR)))) great word...
