In this video you’ll see how you can easily create melodies and chord progressions in Maschine MK3 without knowing much music theory.
All these features are available on all Maschine controllers: Maschine MK1 and MK2, Maschine Mikro MK1, MK2 and MK3 and Maschine Studio. It’s just that the MK3 adds dedicated buttons on the front panel for quicker access.
So these music theory helpers are in Keyboard mode and Chords mode
With keyboard mode you can choose a type of scale, select a root note and play in any key and only the “right” notes are available on the pads.
Chords mode has two options: Harmonizer and Chord Sets.
Harmonizer creates parallel chords - the same chord but starting from a different root which is not very flexible, it’s similar to Ableton Live’s chord effect.
Chord sets offer you a bunch of chords that will sound good in a particular key and they are not the same chord played up and down the keyboard. It’s basically a pool of chords that you can play just by pressing a single pad and create your own chord progressions.
this is the best video on the internet that covers the keyboard mode settings on maschine. thanks for your time and effort making this video.
This is so nice to hear! Much appreciated!
3 years on, still really helpful! Thanks for this.
Glad it was helpful! I think I made it in November 2018, so that's 4 years ago.
Maschine is extremely versatile and capable, I'm glad I ended up keeping mine; I almost got disgusted and traded it, but I hung in there, and today I'm 100% glad
Thanks #ShoutOut to Low Heat and NI and Maschine Mk3 Devs & makers
That's great to hear fam!
The fact that I've never noticed the chord set feature after 4 years of having my Mk3 shows why this is the BEST video out there

Best video on this topic.
Thank you 🙏
Just found your channel, good video, I want to get back in to music production and I'm cross between the Akai MPC live or Maschine MK3, my question is with the MK3 in chord mode can you play chords like sus4? Also I need to be able to record audio tracks like a guitar and vocals into the software can you do that with this kit?
the live is and standalone
Yeah, there are all kinds of chords in the chord sets, not just regular major and minor ones.
Also, yes, you can record audio but it's more like loop recording, not linear recording as in a proper DAW.
Thanks for watching!
Thank u so so much~ The beats are fire!
I appreciate that!
#TeamMaschine forever ♾️ 👌🏼✅✌🏼
Very helpful, subscribed , thanks!
Thanks man!
Nice Thank You You Explained It Great i Have a Question How Do You Set Up So You Can Record Chords Back into a DAW Like Cubase So All The Chords are Recorded Midi Note into Cubase Thanks Bro
You need to go to the Sound's MIDI output settings and choose "Host" as a destination. Then you need to setup a MIDI channel in your DAW to receive MIDI from Maschine. I'm not sure how to do it in Cubase though, I use Ableton Live.
Thanks Man
Esta bueno el video!!! Thanks man!
Much appreciated man!
Just brilliant!
Much appreciated man!
You the man bro great video
Thanks for watching bro 🙏
Great video dude
Thanks dude!
Great video! Can you load in to the MK3 authentic acoustic piano and electric bass samples?
Thank you! You can load literally any sound you can get your hands on, and also plenty real instrument sounds come bundled with it.
Excellent vid!
Glad you enjoyed it man!
Thanks! Great content
Much appreciated!
Great tip bro!
Thanks for watching bro!
I just subscribed. I got a new channel too.....I actually got a Maschine Mikro from the pawn shop and have been make music with that....keep putting out content my brotha....I'll be checking in.
Much appreciated bruh!
Dope,do you think Mk3 has enough chords?
Yeah man, 16 sets with 12 chords each. I think it’s more than enough.
Low Heat Beats I think the chords sound generic and boring, I think they need more unique chords. Using the Maschine chords gets old very fast I'm my opinion. I can't just use these few chords over and over forever in my opinion, not enough chords.
@@CADILLAKTRACKZ I don't know man, I mostly play my chords with a keyboard and use these from time to time. But they are fine for me. I wouldn't use them in every track anyway.
@@CADILLAKTRACKZit's all about how you use them. Ofc you can't use the same ones over and over but you can do a decent amount. I'm working on a large EP solely arranged on a Maschine.
@@CADILLAKTRACKZ you can exit the chord mode and play your own chords. Remember it's 16 sets and 12 chords per key.
Great Video bro
Glad you enjoyed it!
With these chord bank presets that you're showing at 5:20, can you please tell me if you can edit/modify the individual notes in those patches, then save your own edited 16-pad chords layouts as your own patch/preset. Thank you!
That would be great, AFAIK it's not possible in Maschine, I think you can do that on the MPC though.
@@LowHeatBeats Oh right thanks for answering, I'll check that out!
Is it can control a keyboard directly in chord set function without computer ?
Maschine MK3 can't do it without a computer but with Maschine + it should be possible.
Hi Low Heat Beats :-) I am looking for either and Mpc Ren og the MK3. Is the swing on Maschine MK3 just as good as the swing a Mpc has ? I am into Boom Bap :-) Could you do a video making a classic 90s Boom Bap beat because a lot of us out there hear that swing on Maschine is not near as good as an Mpc ?
Hey man, I'd love to do a video on swing. I've used an MPC1000, Ableton Live and Maschine and TBH I've never thought any of them was better than the other. If you're deciding between MPC or Maschine, there are much more important considerations than how they swing. But really most of the time I just play my own groove unquantized without using the swing option.
@@LowHeatBeats Thanks for the answer
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them! I will try to make such a video.
@@LowHeatBeats Thanks a lot :-)
Hello from France 🇫🇷 nice job 👍👍👍👍🇫🇷🇫🇷🎧🎧🎧🎧💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Much appreciated man!
Dope bruh
Thanks dude!
This makes me want to upgrade to MK3, I still have Mikro Maschine One lol!!
Yeah the MK3 is dope but you can actually do this on Maschine Mikro MK1 too.
@@LowHeatBeats You should be able to do this on any Maschine hardware. I'm using the Studio
thanks for this video
Thanks for watching
What I don’t get is why you have to pick minor or major. Shouldn’t you chose the key you are in for the song and it does the chords for that key? This way you have the right chords because all keys are a mix of both major and minor chords. Is it possible to do this
Because major and minor keys have different chords. For example C major uses different chords than C minor. And yes, they have a mix of both major and minor chords but that doesn't mean they are the same chords.
Yesssss man
🙌🙌
You rock. Thanks for the kickass tutorial.
Happy to help!
So if I wanted to play chord progressions I couldn't do the 2 5 1 with harmonizer
I think you can in some keys, where the three chords are the same type, e.g. minor.
@@LowHeatBeats thanks man
It’s kinda limited, it doesn’t give you everything in my experience. Like you get one, or the other, or both, but if you want both, you only get the ones they choose. Like why can’t we have all? Only way I’ve seen is to switch between chord groups or modes, but it disrupts workflow. Seems the only option is to become a pianist.
And will this pretty much play any chord known to man for the most part if manipulated correctly
Not sure about that tbh but I think you can get a nice variety of chords.
Hi can you help me please.
Maschine virtual out and in are missing.
Sorry, I’ve no idea why they are missing.
So i have the chords only for major and minor scale ? Where can. i find the chords for the other one? Sorry i am a totally noob
You can play other scales together with those chords, not just the basic major and minor.
I like that!!
Thanks man!
Are the chord sets in progressive order like Major I min II, MajIII, Maj iV etc.?
Hmm, that’s how they should be but I’m not sure, as I actually rarely use this feature and I’m not in front of my Maschine right now.
@@LowHeatBeats Hey mate thanks for your reply. If you happen to figure out please let me know :) Since you rarely use that feature, i think the keyboard feature could be more useful.
Yo really dope instructional video or tutorial on the MK3! I’m digging the functions on this piece of gear!My friend just copped a Mpc One recently. Watching this video I like what is being shown also done! I see you are using Ableton is it the base version on the updated version just curious? The sounds are dope.
Hey, thank you! I’ve got the full Ableton Live Suite 10 but you can do a lot with Standard too.
Dope
Thanks!
Can you make chord inversions on the mk3 or plus??
I don't think so, although some of the chords in the chord sets may already be inverted.
how do you tell what chord your playing in that e minor scale? do the buttons tell whats the chord like g c d ? rather than just hitting random chords
Yeah, you can see the chord names on the display
How do you avoid the same chord progressions?
Play chords in different order with different rhythms, patterns, etc.
So question when you set your scale no matter what you'll always be in key
Yup, that's how it works.
@@LowHeatBeats Nice thanks dude ✊🏾
Wonder why they can't add this to Maschine Studio? Seems like the MK3 is a better option, even if just for this feature....
All these features have been available on all Maschine controllers including the Studio for some time now. It’s just that the MK3 adds dedicated buttons on the front panel for quicker access.
@@LowHeatBeats Awesome to know. So many RUclips videos on the MK3 make it seem like this is a new feature specific to the MK3. I like the studio a bit better, but if I can just assign a button to do bring up this option on the screen, might go with STudio still. Thanks so much for the info.
@@Curious_Skeptic Sure, I'm happy to help. On the Studio you just press Shift + Pad Mode and it's there, so it's pretty easy too.
Merci bon tuto
You’re welcome ☺️
When I record my chords, the loop cuts me off. No matter what I set the bars to. I need help PLEEEEEASE!!!!
Hmm, maybe you have set the loop bracket in the arrangement page to a shorter length than the legth of your pattern?
@@LowHeatBeats
How is that done?
Can i use mp3 files?
Nope
Very helpful, but if you know nothing about music theory you do not even understand what all the names and choices available means 😃✨
Noted! But also it's a great opportunity for you to research some of the terms and this way you'll get introduced to music theory.
My nigga✌🏽
I appreciate it bro 👊
cover shaft
click bate. Where is the cheat? Your'e just showing how to use the chord function on mk3. Smdh.
Hey, I’m sorry you felt click-baited, most people found the video really helpful. Of course music isn’t a sport and you can’t actually cheat. But it’s a cheat in a sense that it allows you to compose music without actually knowing any music theory.
Annoying reflections of you recording equipment in the MK3 displays!
Well, I'll try to do it better next time, thanks for the feedback.
Get over yourself. He doesn't have to make these helpful videos. Be grateful
Thank you!
Great video!
Thanks for watching it!
I like that!!
Thanks bruh!
