      Strangely been thinking about it for years. Been looking at my 9n tractor with that in mind as well. America needs a light diesel option with a manual transmission. Saturn is likely the last quality (for small american cars) option with that viability. I just wish those 3 cylinder diesels weren't a billion dollars. What I really want to do is mesh an electric motor with this diesel engine and proper regen brakes. It works for the train industry...and I'd love to toss this in an S10 or ranger. I think it would resolve the slow starts and improve mileage, obviously.

    I did suggest this a while ago but worth repeating - you could improve the flow through the exhaust housing by tidying up the casting. These Chinese turbos are rough inside and restrictive compared to the IHI originals. This will produce boost earlier and help lower the exhaust temperature.
    Here's a link to a how-to video which gave impressive results on the same turbo entitled:

    I had a 1990 Chevy Cavalier Z24 with a 3.1 5MT. The 5MT, which was the Getrag HM282, had a flip up and pull out style dipstick. I actually replaced it while I owned the car because the original didn't seal up when flipped back down. I also had a very, very rare 1991 Cutlass Supreme International coupe with a 3.4 DOHC V6 and the super rare beefed up big brother of the HM282, the Getrag HM284 5 speed manual. They only put this transmission in the W body chassis (Cutlass, GP, Lumina) though the Regal never got the MT option. They also only ever paired this trans with the 3.4 in these chassis for 2 years with a total production of less than 500 in all 3 cars for the 2 years 91&92. There was supposedly 1 93 GP with a MT. The 284 used a pull style throw out arm like the corvettes had. A cheap clutch was $450. Being only ever paired with the DOHC 3.4, they were geared perfectly for this engine, which had a 500 RPM higher red line than the automatics. When you ran it to the red line, and hit the next gear, it dropped you right in at 3,200 rpm, where the powerband picked up. They also had 25hp more than the autos.The 284 also had the same flip up style dipstick.

    • @bartlevenson7851
      @bartlevenson7851 Год назад +24

      @@Cowboy.underwater This will lower the fuel milage for sure. the problem is that you are too severely underpowered, amd the turbo- the smallest in the world- cannot develop good boost down at 1600 - 1800 Rpm where you will see exponential increases in diesel fuel mileage. an ideal solution, if you can score the 4 cyl. 1105cc Kubota diesel, would be to transfer your turbo and intercooler set up to them and use the tallet gearset. It would be happy and relaxed cruising at 50- 55 mph as the engine has 60 more displacement and torque from the get go and with the turbo it would make some semi serious torque wher you want it, which is below 2000 RPMs. Tony Capana did this back in 1981 in Torrance Ca in 1981 with an old Mazda sedan that he modified with different Kubotas and he achieved 85 mpg cruising at 55, and 101 mpg at 50 mpg. He was running bald tires with 90 PSI, however, so the car must have ridden like hell. He also managed 74 mpg in a VW Beetle with a 1300 cc Kubota. His son, Lloyd, managed nearly 50 mpg in a '74 Camaro with a 3.3 liter Mitsubishi industrial diesel turboed to make 130 hp and 2.56 rear ends plus overdrive so he could cruise at 50 mph at 1200 RPM.
      When I drove semis in the 1970s, we got 4.2 to 4.7 mpg. Now with engine improvements and aero improvements, drivers are averaging close to 7 mpg, an I know a guy with a 13 liter Volvo with turbo compunding who gets 8.2 mpg cruising at 63 mph! He is only turning 1175 RPM at that speed. That is nearly 1000 RPM slower than we did 45 years ago!

    Here's a tip if you're not producing at least 3lbs of boost then remove the turbo and check your performance, you see the back pressure caused by the turbo means you WILL NOT see any gains but losses of performance fuel mileage or power until you hit 3lbs of boost or more. With a diesel engine even that one in a car you want at least 5lbs of boost at optimum rpm and speed, we call it the sweat spot like you talked about the motor wasn't happy
    Play with the boost controler or just remove the turbo and see what happens. I think you will be very surprised, me I would play with the boost because you could improve your 0 to 60 time and not hurt long distance fuel mileage, just get your boost and afr working together! I have commented on it before but porting the exhaust housing of the turbo to match the size of the pipe coming from the exhaust manifold should help it pick up response and possibly get you a couple of PSI of boost while cruising.
    This could also be helped by making a 2.5” down pipe that’s about 8-12” long coming out of the turbo to act as a expansion chamber for hot exhaust gas allowing the turbo to spool more rabidly as there would be a greater pressure differential across the exhaust turbine.

A couple of our friends had already bought their Rabbit pickups with the standard 4-speed trans, and were getting over 50MPG (52-53, if I remember correctly). We thought that the 5-speed would get us even higher mileage, but it averaged around 45 MPG, as the little 1.6 liter diesel (no turbo) just didn't have enough oomph to run economically in 5th gear.

    Thanks for not catering to everyone who has an opinion! That being said, i did have an idea that i just wanted to say... if it struggles at lower rpm because of the lack of boost, an interesting way to get around that would be to have a compound turbo, one small turbo that feeds another, which feeds the motor. That would allow it to have more substantial boost when cruising at low rpm, which may fix your problem. Have a great day!

    When I was in college I had a little '84 Nissan diesel that got about 55 mpg at 60 mph with the stock engine. Fast forward 40 years and you really can't get significantly better mileage from a car. The EPA made it all about emissions and mileage has at best stayed the same. The EPA mileage estimate for that car was 45 mpg I think and a few years ago they tweaked the test and knocked about 1/3 off the ratings of all older cars to make it look like new cars are better but they really aren't.

    About 25 years ago I put a Onan OHV 16 HP twin cylinder engine in a MGB and it got great fuel mileage BUT it was only good for in town driving. It couldn't even drive on the highway and couldn't even pass on a 45 MPH country road.
    My point is that a car can get great mileage but isn't practical for real world driving.
    FYI - I learned to drive / owned a VW Beetle at age 15 (Texas rural permit to go to school) which if I remember right had a 36 HP engine so it drive fine as a low HP, poor aerodynamic car but it took forever to pass, you had to have a BIG gap in traffic actually drop back a bit and start accelerating to pass BEFORE the oncoming car got to you. So you were actually seemingly going to rear end the car in front of you, then the oncoming car cleared and you had to quickly with it floored, whip your car into the oncoming lane and pass then get back in your lane. I had to learn mad speed and distance judging skills. And THATS why I own and drive a supercharged racecar as a daily driver, no having to do stupid stuff to maneuver on the road (and I do track the car frequently to maintain skills and keep the adrenaline glands flowing freely)

    That OD cover, you don't need to make a gasket. Ensure the surfaces are spotlessly clean and dry with an aggressive solvent like a brake cleaning type solvent, then use Permatex grey silicone.
    Many Japanese gearboxes never actually had gaskets OEM. For the metal on metal machined surfaces they used a product called Threebond red-brown silicone. Permatex grey is a fine substitute if you can't get Threebond.
    This is how good the grey silicone is, V12 Jaguar engines replacing a valve cover gasket is a major operation. I never put paper gaskets back in, I just use Permatex grey and the screws holding the covers can never come loose as the gasket compresses, so they never leak. Also there is no osmosis through the gasket material. Customers ask me how I get them to stay so dry and I have to tell them it's a trade secret otherwise they worry.

    • @bobirving6052
      @bobirving6052 Год назад +1

      I have worked on this and sometimes there is a clearance issue with the shaft oiler in the cover. It is stamped sheet metal and can wear through when it hits the shaft. Then metal shavings get in the tranny and your bearings can fail from running dry.
      Sucks to lose a tranny.

    another tip == Automotive businesses can do well in recessions as people are forced to look after their vehicles and pay for repairs when they cannot replace them.
    ⛽⛽⛽⛽Pros and Cons: The pro is that many states do not require a formal qualification to repair vehicles (though qualifications are beneficial to have). It is also a specialized field unlikely to be flooded by other new businesses. The con to running a private mechanics’ service is that you need a workshop, plus the cost of equipment and tools, which starts at $20,000, including a basic hoist.

      tip on getting a lift --- Know thy garage
      Sometimes sheer enthusiasm will overshadow what’s physically feasible. It’s important not to get carried away. Measure, re-measure, and re-re-measure your garage. Car lift alterations are sometimes possible, but they are rare and always costly. Double-check with local installers to find out the minimum space required to work on your new auto lift. Triple-check the physical dimensions of your favored car lift either online or over the phone. If you can, find out if anyone nearby, such as a dealership or a neighbor, already has the automotive lift you’ve got your eye on. Most lift owners are extremely proud of their car lifts and will probably be happy to give you a quick tour. Also, make sure you know where your electricity is, if you need a compressor to operate the locks and if your concrete can handle the bolts, should you be required to secure your auto lift to the floor. Basically, it comes down to really getting acquainted with your garage. One great way to keep track of everything is with a quick-reference notebook containing some of the more important dimensions of your garage, so that you are prepared with your install-site information at all times.

    Your videos are always intriguing to watch and its fun seeing how much you can pull out of that adorable little diesel engine.
    And to that effect to me it seems like out of everything that's on the car at the moment the biggest problem is probably in the exhaust system and that T shaped log exhaust probably doing the most harm, two of the cylinders are effectively doing anti scavenging and pushing exhaust back into the cylinders and the backpressure is probably not helping the 3rd cylinder either, since it's such a short distance between the turbo and the exhaust it wouldn't be particularly expensive or difficult to make a simple exhaust header out of some steel tube even if it ends up looking like a chickens foot I think it would be worth while considering, especially since its likely severely hampering the turbocharger and fuel economy of the vehicle in general :D

    There is a type of wrap or "tape" that you can fold around your exhaust pipes which is used in racing, the idea being that the temperature inside the exhaust stays as stable as possible. Not warming up your car??
    Starting to drive your car while it’s still “cold” is “the worst thing people do.” Yet it’s probably something many drivers do without even thinking, or if they’re in a rush. And another common misconception about this is that you only need to wait for your engine to “warm up” in the winter. “Be it summer or winter, your car’s engine and fluid systems need a full three to five minutes to warm up properly, especially if you immediately must rev your engine to get onto a highway or climb a steep hill,” Hanson says. This will keep your engine in good condition for much longer and reduces strain on it.
