  • This is by far the most painful thing I have ever experienced when it comes to TASing and just Dolphin in general.
Let me just explain what it took to make the thing you are watching.
Back in October I spent a weekend night TASing all of Contender%. This was done very sloppily I must admit, so I'm actually in a way glad that it desynced and all my hard work was ruined. I didn't even know about desyncs at the time because I had never experienced them before. As I had only ever TASed two individual fighters.
Fast forward to post christmas, my Doc Louis TAS gets released. I'm thinking now is the time I want to actually TAS Contender%, so that I can get it off of my back as it's been requested forever. I do this and I check the input file after every fighter to check for desyncs. Everytime I got a desync, I had to retas the whole fight that it desynced on.
There is no way to skip to a part of a Dolphin video file so I had to watch it everytime. It got really painful towards the end of the game because it averages one desync per fighter, sometimes two. That's not even counting fatal wii remote desyncs, which is where the movie stops completely. Whereas other desyncs a punch is mistimed and it ruins the fight from there.
I finally got done with it to be told by the TASVideos community: 1. This thing doesn't sync anywhere but my own computer, because I used a laptop and it runs so differently. And 2. More importantly I TASed this on an NKit.iso which they don't really want a submission with. I thought "ok that is 100% on me, but I can at least upload this TAS to youtube myself... right??"
I quickly learned I would not be able to use OBS to record Dolphin while it plays, as I TASed this whole thing on my laptop and it can't record without a lot of lag. I scrapped the idea of the TAS until roughly 4 days ago, when I was told about Frame Dumping by Mysteryman and Saria_100 in one of Mysteryman's streams.
Frame Dumping is not fps based and is frame based, so the file it outputs can't be laggy. I thought that this was perfect, so I set it up to dump the whole TAS and went to bed. I woke up in the morning to find that it dumped the entire thing into PNGs, and they're not even good quality.
I talked to Mysteryman who told me that I needed to dump it in an AVi or FFV1, but you can't do that on a Mac without a lot of extra steps to recompile Dolphin.
I didn't know how to do that so I thought "I'll just get a program to dump all of these images into an avi that way." So I then dumped the whole thing at 1080P this time, and went to bed.
I wake up to find that my computer has run out of storage, because there were over 80,000 high quality images before it stopped (the TAS having exactly 100,521 frames).
I then realized I was going to have to dump in chunks, after doing this I realized there was no good program to turn the images into an avi, and it seemed that it didnt even dump every frame in the first place because there were chunks missing. I realized I was gonna have to figure out how to recompile Dolphin.
That's where Saria_100 comes in. They tried to help me to set up Dolphin and run terminal commands so it would dump, but it really wasn't working and we kept hitting dead ends. They then suggested I take this to a mod in the Dolphin discord server, which I did.
I want to give a huge thanks to Hibyehello on the Dolphin discord server, who helped me through 99% of the process and kept helping me when I would ask stupid questions and when we kept running into problems. Which happened constantly. Every fix to a problem brought another problem it seemed. But after 4 long days, I finally have a syncable TAS that frame dumps to an avi file, and here we are.

Now I will give a pastebin of the TASVideos fighter descriptions I wrote out for anyone who wants to learn how they work. I highly recommend you also check out the POWii IL Guide if you want to learn how to fight all these guys.
