Overview:
This is a tool assisted speedrun of Punch-Out!! for the Nintendo Wii (released 2009). The run is done in the Career mode, which sees Little Mac rise through the ranks in Contender, defend his champion status in Title Defence, and ending his career by taking 3 losses in the Mac's Last Stand gauntlet, all completed as fast as possible!
All of the fights put together total 19:40.81 in-game time. In real time (RTA), the time is 1:00:18.20.
(Note: This game is quite loud, and it was decided to use raw, unedited audio due to different audio setups. You may have to turn things down a smidge)

Just want to give a huge thanks to Mysteryman for offering any help in the first place, this TAS would not be here if it weren't for that. TASing this was way easier than Contender because I didn't have to think of a plan, I just had one to execute. Also was able to only have to TAS around three fights that I'd call super time consuming. (TD Macho, TD Bull, and TD Don). MM did the rest of the time consuming fights, so again huge thanks to him for taking on this project with me!

that has happened on more than one occasion. back when butterbean (eric scott esch) was still fighting, he squared off against james baker and it ended with butterbean claiming victory 18 seconds into the first round. baker got his clock CLEANED.
I know it's a joke but irl, that's why boxing events, unless it's biggest names in the world facing off, will always have more than one fight, instead having several of them

I like to think that some dude literally just came in, proceeded to beat everyone in the ring AND defend his title, and then just called it quits. All within an hour.

Example: If you use the 3 star punch on glass Joe after he steps to the side and taunts he gets an instant KO

What I love about Punch-Out!! TASes are how they're pretty similar to the actual speedrun. Normally I love watching a TAS completely break the game, but it's almost more impressive that the speedrunners can keep up with a lot of the TAS stats in this game

Tas either goes apeshit with a 20 minute improvement over real runs like in Celeste
or its tame and pretty similar to normal runs
This sort of thing is actually fairly easy to do in Punch Out games because the series lets you input a move while you're doing something else and it will start as soon as that other move ends. This buffering is used quite a lot in RTA. The role of TAS is more to make sure the AI and RNG cooperate to allow for the optimal strategies.

At least Von Kaiser finally beat little mac incredibly quickly in last stand mode after Little mac beat all his opponents twice to brag about, and heal himself over, so he got that victory at the end of the day...only Don Flamenco, and Sandman himself could also say that they won against Little Mac.

One of my favorite parts is when you win against Super Macho Man, and his overexaggerated defeat is just fantastic.
This is legitimately one of the most graphically beautiful Wii games I've ever seen.
I love how you even restarted the match just to hear Von Kaiser yell “COMBAT BOOTS!!!” In german
It’s actually because of the “power on” glitch, where if it’s your first time fighting them their first attack will come out a frame later
The same glitch applies for the other fighters they reset on

@@millios3592 The purpose of most TASes is to show the game beaten in the perfect, best possible time
In the case of this punch out TAS, it’s recorded in match time (shown at the end of the fight), not total game time, so those seconds spent don’t matter
If you have that extra frame, it won’t be a perfect run anymore

What's a TAS?
@@Quax4448 tool assisted speedrun, a program that is used to make precise inputs at very specific timings that would be incredibly difficult/impossible for a human to pull off in a speedrun, especially in a single segment run. in punch out wii's case, usually to make frame perfect move cancels, making an input on the first possible frame to save time and see the human limit (punch out runners are insane and can tie with the tas for individual fights)

@@tailsthefox_in Last Stand you're supposed to lose. The game will never end until you've lost 3 times. Since it's a speedrun they lose as quick as possible. If you're lucky (or unlucky) you might face Donkey Kong.

I checked the pastebin on the strategies for these fights. The explanation for the restart on CD Soda, TD Kaiser, and both CD & TD Bull was in order to get rid of the "Power On glitch".
I looked everywhere, but I cannot find what this glitch is and what it does. Can someone enlighten me on what that is?
Those fights have their first move come out 1 frame later than normal if it is the first time they are fought after loading the game. Restarting removes this feature. And also, all of the fighters affected by this feature are also affected by when the intro is skipped.

That was so mean of you, letting Soda think he could win.
Soda Popinski and Von Kaiser would go down in history as the ones who managed to knock down the monster known as Little Mac, before Mac clearly gave up on boxing. Dedicated Von Kaiser fans insist that his win against Mac was totally legitimate, and that it was what convinced Mac to give up, rather than him deciding beforehand.
Fans of Don Flamenco and Mr. Sandman likewise agree that their boxers displayed a superior will to Little Mac, who to them was too shaken by loss to make a comeback, unlike their favorites who maintained determination and eventually won out in the end for it.
In response to these victories, the rankings were redone with Mr. Sandman reclaiming his spot at the top, on account of an actual win and the battle that ended Mac’s career, as well as his previous placement as #1 prior to Little Mac taking the spot. He was followed by Von Kaiser, and then Don Flamenco and Soda Popinski.
Soda fans maintain their favorite was cheated, that Little Mac clearly threw his third fight with Don Flamenco, but Don Flamenco’s fans point out they don’t know for sure, and a win is a win, unlike Soda Popinski. When asked on his opinion on the debate, Soda declined to answer. In the end, his ranking remained unchanged from prior to Little Mac’s reign of terror, despite his effort and stardom as the first one who stood a fighting chance against Mac, adding to his fans’ chagrin. Nonetheless, the match in which Little Mac was revealed to not be invincible remains memorable to this day, despite Soda’s eventual loss. As they say, if you can make God bleed...
That said, the lack of an actual win, as well as Soda’s disappointing follow-up match, remain additional sore spots, and lead others to claim Soda merely got ‘lucky’. Two knockouts suggest otherwise for some, and others wonder if Mac intentionally allowed his knockouts from Soda and Von Kaiser simply to play around, before throwing his final matches.

Wii U still has it digitally for $20, if you don’t like spending money but somehow have a computer with decent specs, download a rom and dolphin and play it that way for free

So I was reading the Pastebin document because I was curious as to why TAS restarted on Contender Soda,
however there is no mention as to what exactly the "power on glitch" is.

When it's your first time playing Contender Soda, Contender Bull, Title Defense von Kaiser, or Title Defense Bull, for whatever reason the game has their first attack come out a frame later or (0.06 seconds). It is unknown why this happens. Because I value game time above all else, I take an extra 5 or so seconds to save this frame.

I was about to say "What happened during the Contender Soda Popinski and Bald Bull" but then i readed the strategies explanation and i was like "Oh, that makes sence, so still, Soda Popinski's still a Bitch to fight" tho i think it might be worse in the PAL version when it comes to the Title Defense because, The Cutting Room Floor page said this:
In the NTSC (North American) version, title defense Soda Popinski can be knocked out after the player knocks him down six times. I have a PAL console, so at one point, I might see if that is true. Normally, Soda Pop in his pre-round animation will pick up two bottles and drink from them at the same time, but the Punch Out wiki states that damaging him enough makes it so that he will instead pick up both crates and drink from the bottles in them, so I might test that too.
@@jacobyoshi3161 Huh.. didin't knew about the pre-round animation with the crates, guess that i might have to pick up Punch Out Wii again, it was a very long time ago since i did not played it again.
As for what i mentioned from TCRF, i did not saw that myself, it just said that, so that's another thing i'll also have to see.

Punch out wii seems like a really good and interesting game to speedrun, no luck based stuff outside last stand, and it really tests your skill at the game with frame perfect inputs, and complex patterns/pattern manipulation all over the place. Imagine a flyweight 17 year old boxer taking down boxers, and TKOing them far faster than Mr. Sandman ever could, all because little mac has absurd reaction time, and knows how to properly exploit the weaknesses an opponent has to instantly down them.
