  • Hello wonderful people, today I am discussing if the fragrances go darker in juice color and stronger over the years if you let them sit for couple of years, the findings are from my own experiences and I discussed some negative/risks also. If you find the topic interesting, please watch the video :) thanks so much.

A perfume is not quite like wine ... but all the same, you can keep a perfume for well over 3 years.
The 36-month indication on any cosmetic or perfume product is first and foremost legal and legal cover for the industry, in order to be safe in the event of product deterioration, and therefore complaints after this period.
But if you've ever had the chance to smell a vintage scent that's over 50 years old, you might have found that some do really admirably, and that it would have been more than a shame if their first owner put them in the trash after 3 years.
In short, the worst enemies of perfume are: heat, light, humidity and air.
The best way to store a perfume bottle is therefore to keep it in the dark, in its box, in a closed cupboard (UV rays alter the olfactory molecules), at a constant temperature, between 11 and 15 ° ideally. (heat accelerates reactions), and at low humidity (a wine cellar will be perfect).
So you will understand, the worst means of conservation are bottles without box, displayed in the bathroom or on a window sill ... and at worst, in the sun!
Spray bottles store better in theory than splash bottles because opening the bottle increases contact with air which accelerates oxidation.
Be careful, however: if the bottle has not been used for a long time, the pump should be primed by spraying "empty" several times to purge the perfume contained in the dip tube.
A full bottle will always keep better than a half empty one, again due to contact with air and oxidation.
Finally, perfumes and extracts, which are more concentrated in “basic” or resins materials, keep a priori better than fresh, light waters with more volatile notes.
The more volatile top notes (citrus, aromatics, etc.) are generally more sensitive to oxidation than the base notes, which, heavier and slower to evaporation, are also more resistant to instability over time .
In general, amber and leathers are more resistant to time. Be careful with chypres, where patchouli and oak moss tend to rise and swallow up the rest of the composition, bringing a plastic odor.
Some flowers darken naturally with age without altering the smell, this is particularly the case of jasmine and especially orange blossom, due to the presence of methyl anthranilate which forms on contact with an aldehyde this called a Schiff base.
But there is no real rule, we can not predict how long a perfume will be still wearable.
The best judge is your nose: apply it on your wrist, and if after a few minutes the scent seems recognizable and pleasant to you, there is no problem.
If, on the contrary, an odor of vinegar, of plastic, or a metallic, unsightly and unpleasant note persists, it is because the perfume is "shot", too transformed, it is a bit like a corked wine.
And if you are afraid of catching Ebola: since perfumes are mainly made up of ethanol, antiseptic by nature, there is little chance that a colony of bacteria or fungi will develop in such a hostile environment ... the risk is therefore above all olfactory, not sanitary. 😊

Fragrances that are heavy on mid to base notes tend to get stronger smelling over time because the molecules of the top notes degrade over time which give that perception of a richer deeper fragrance on first spray. It works well for those types of fragances...woody chypres, gourmands etc that tend to have their predominant scent character in their mid to base note components. Fresh fragrances on the other hand are likely to be perceived as being spoilt after a much shorter time as their scent character will be drastically altered with the relatively fast degradation of the top note molecules on which the scent profile of the fragance depends heavily. So its perhaps unwise to have used fresh fragrances sitting for an extended time...especially with lower juice levels which permit a good amount of air in the bottle. The likelihood is that given the increased oxidation and reactions with the volatile molecules of the top notes, after a while the fragrance will simply smell of the alcohol and remnants of woody notes....a perceived 'spoilt' smell.

Ive had a bottle of Allure Homme since 1997 which is a citric fresh cologne, and it’s been sitting in the back of my closet with a little over 20 ml for the better of two decades. I spray it occasionally every once in a while and let me tell you that it smells pretty much the same at least to my nose. So, not ALL the time the same rules apply to every perfume.

@@engell3707 well...not all fragrances are created equal. Chanel is.likely to use top notch fragrance oils that are not susceptible to degradation easily if stored properly. My bottle of Terre D Hermes has not feared to well after a number of years. Top notes have all but gone and has smell of alcohol for quite a while till near the dry down when the other notes come to the fore. Thats perceived as a spoilt fragrance.

Second story: Year 2002 bought a bottle of Jovan Musk Sex Appeal at Walmart for about 20 dollars, sprayed it on me and I was like eww hell no, I didn’t like it, left it forgotten on my car in extreme weather conditions for 4 years (I live in Chicago) One day in 2006 before I punched in at the supermarket where I used to work at I found the bottle so hot, it was summer, sprayed it like 3 times then walked in, everyone was asking me what I was wearing, cashiers, managers, customers and vendors, that was my most complimented fragrance until I finished it, I wore it everyday after I showered before going to work and everyone knew I was around because how good the store smelled when I was around, I bought a new one but never received a compliment again, the bad one smelled so good😂

Yea this needs to be studied. I’m surprised one of the larger fragrance companies has not already done some digging into this. Maybe they have and just haven’t released info.
One of the fragrance channels should start a kickstarter and raise some money to have some labs analyze some of your older perfumes.
I heard Sarah McCartney on her channel mention they do not get stronger, it’s just the aroma molecules over time bond more to the ethanol molecules and thus instead of the alcohol evaporating say at a 60-70 percent ratio along with aroma molecules, it is closer to 100.
In other words when you spray a freshly made perfume, you get a alcohol smell first, then the fragrance. In older fragrance you are getting a completely bonded fragrance evaporating together.
I’m sure the answer is most likely a combination of all of these things.
1: degradation of top molecules, the stronger mid/base notes coming through
2:Some alcohol evaporation, thus a stronger concentration
3:A better bond with alcohol and more AM evaporation.
4:An unknown variable, such as a sort of shiff base reaction, but positive and beneficial that makes the scent stronger.

Armani code eau de toilette & Jimmy choo ice eau de toilette. At first, I stored them in my fridge, because u heard you can. Then I used them & the strength & smell of them, after a week in the fridge, smelt kinda "weaker." So I taken them out of the fridge & left them at room temp. Have I literally ruined my eau de toilettes?? I'm panicking now. Cheers 🍻

Even a short amount of time you will notice a difference. I have had scents that I hated when I first smelt them, but let them sit for a few months and now they are some of my favs. How strong they are is debatable. I have had some get stronger and some get weaker. Haven't had long enough time to truly test though.
I have an original Huge Boss Bottled and Givenchy Pi from 20+ years ago. Both of them smell super amazing still. There is barely anything left in the bottle, but even with all the air they still smell great. Only thing I noticed is if you let it sit for a super long time (years and years) without spraying the first spray may smell like alcohol. Not rubbing alcohol smell like the opening in cheap fragrances, but actual alcohol that you would drink. I think the stuff left in the tube goes bad, but the rest of the scent was fine after that.
I have also heard if a scent has changed to where you think it may have gone bad to shake it a lot and spray it 3-4 times first before applying to skin. Never shake a fragrance normally, but if you think it may have gone bad you really have nothing to lose in trying. I had some that ended up smelling better after that, but at the end of the day if the scent has gone bad you are most likely screwed.

I would not expose fragrances to sunlight, even in cold countries. UV light damages and degrades even very tough paints over time. The only thing that seems to be truly impervious to UV light are ceramics. Organic compounds are particularly vulnerable to it. A fragrance getting exposed to UV light will sooner or later change. Whether the new smell would be better or worse who knows, but my strong guess is that the probability of it becoming any better is extremely low.
Another thing: after several years some fragrances may darken. What should not be happening is fragrances that were clearly darker not after several years, but right then when new a few years ago, and are now being sold new in clearly lighther colorations. And next to that, claiming that nothing has changed in the formulation, that buyers just need to wait because the fragrance will darken over time. This is something that Sebastian Jara has exposed, showing examples of it in at least two of his videos.

The maceration thing is definitely true but there are way too many variables to say how exactly does it work. People often claim contradictory things. Some proper research needs to be put into this.
And I mean like buying several dozens bottles of the same fragrance (same batch as well) and storing them in different conditions (all combinations of temperature/temperature change/humidity/sunlight exposure/closed box/freshly sprayed/decanted in various quantities/etc. - preferably more than one bottle for one combination of conditions - but that would be easily over 100 bottles) for at least a couple of months, and in the meantime sampling them and testing on GC/MS to observe the change over time.
Then we would have a proper picture.. of one fragrance, which probably doesn't represent how all the rest would macerate 🙃

I feel like it's in the best interests of a house to perform such tests on their product, not necessarily before release, because it would make the process longer and more expensive, but definitely over time. Perhaps some houses do and we don't know about it.

From experience I've found some of my weak perfumes don't get stronger with time but rather they are weaker on the day I purchase them and once the first few sprays are used they perform as intended.
I've also run into fragrances that get better over time in a year or 2. You start getting a richer fuller scent. This happened with Dior Homme Intense.

In regards to buying an older vintage fragrance because it's more macerated, generally just get the new one, the old batches aren't worth it and actually it just comes with more risks because you'll end up with a few duds that weren't worth it. A few exceptions should obviously be made, like if you're a collector and you want different batches and you can afford it, get whatever batches but that wouldn't be the case for just anyone. Also, there are some fragrances that you can find older vintages for pretty reasonable prices or even in some rare cases you can find the older vintages for cheaper or the same price compared to the more modern ones; I own three Thierry Mugler era A*Men fragrances from the early 2010s that were the same price or even cheaper than more modern bottles, so if that's the case then absolutely go for the older vintage.
Just keep an open mind, look for the right deals, if you have to pay $200 for a 2010 bottle of La Nuit vs. $60 for a new one especially if you have to ask. If you have to ask, it means you're not sure in which case you should always go for the better value and not the collectors item that's 3-4x the price.

Leave a bottle of perfume in direct sunlight and it gets better?
I’m willing to run this experience in the name of science, now I just need to find someone willing to lend me their brand new bottle of Aventus in order to do it.

Just ordered a 150ml of Dior homme intense. Should I let it sit in the box for awhile ? Or should I spray it a few times first then store it ,

New batches are strong in my experience. No need to age. Just wear it, the more you spray the faster the aging will happen

No offense, but from the little I know about fragrance the only thing that makes it bad is exposing it to light / exposing it in your bathroom shelves to so much heat .

  • @moustachio334

People in the fragrance community are so foolish. Fragrances get more intense over time because the alcohol content starts to decrease which increases the parfum concentration. I hate hearing people talk about reformulations. Why would YSL risk their popular product with a dramatic change? It makes no sense to make “bad” reformulations. Companies have an image to maintain. LNDL was always very weak. 4-5 hours on my skin too. I didn’t care. I loved it enough to spray more throughout the day.

    • @zeroedout
      @zeroedout Год назад +1

Reformulations do happen especially when the materials they used before have become scarce or more expensive. The perfumers will use a different source and it can make the perfume smell or perform a little different

    • @omegarad123

I don't know your age but reformulations are horrible and and uncalled for... laugh if you want to don't care but..Drakkar noir in its prime was incredible and if it had remained the original formulation would still be turning heads same goes for Dior Fahrenheit which melted peoples mind it smelled so incredible.

    • @DuSeun
      @DuSeun Год назад +4

The reason reformulations are bad is because they happen because of regulations, not because the company wanted to make a better version. IFRA keeps banning important ingredients which is slowly killing fragrances. Fragrances in the 80s were nuclear bombs, nowadays they are barely more than scented water. Most fragrances turn into faint skin scents within 20 minutes
