Your enthusiasm, positive attitude, and advice have really confirmed my own beliefs and I'm going to be pursuing Civil Engineering in college next year. Plus, you're hilarious!

When I was in high school and trying to choose my major, I actually watched Matt and really enjoyed his videos. He was making quality content reviewing college majors from a brutally honest standpoint and his videos are part of why I picked engineering over other fields. However, he started pivoting in the next few years and it really made me second guess majoring in engineering or even going to college at all. In fact, I think this video was released right before I started applying to colleges.
Luckily I didn’t let the video influence my decision, because I really like engineering and 100% would’ve regretted not doing it. Videos like his are really negative and discouraging, and I’m not sure if they realize it, but people actually listen to their advice. Glad people like you and Wissam have a different perspective than he does, it’s really important that prospective engineering students hear both sides of the story before making a decision that changes their life forever.

I think the main problem with mechanical engineering is its hard to do engineering on your own in a very small fast paced environment. most of the time you need a massive factory, tons of machines and equipment.. CS you literally need just a computer and server. so its also it skews heavy towards defense contarctors... its a whole different lifestyle.

another great resource if you are struggling to find a job is to connect with professional organizations! I graduated with my civil degree w/o any internship experience and was fortunate to get a job after graduating. All of my other classmates that had internships had a job lined up for them so I was under the impression that I "fell behind". Don't fall into this mindset! If you're motivated enough to put in the hard work, you'll be rewarded. It was a hard grind for me but I managed to do it by developing my network through joining professional organizations, attending their events, and conducting as many informational interviews as I could!

Just throwing my $0.02 out there, the first facebook post he talks about didn't have any internships in college. This is why you MUST get internships. It gets your foot in the door at the company, and gives you a great resume builder. Also I migrated to software engineering from electrical engineering and I see a lot of software engineers who have an electrical background. If you can't find a job a good electrical engineer or civil engineer, maybe you are in the wrong part of the country or the world and maybe it has less to do with your major.

in the US it is like that with software engineering paying so much more than other fields but like for example in EU its bs, IT does not really pay that much better than other fields in general and well none of them is easier and both are equally stressful. To understand what he believes, we should be in his shoes.
MZ generation is in a transition period of growth curve. Nobody knows it will go up or it will go down. Expectedly, it will go up though.
The point is the job market. From 1900s to 2000s, the market had been growing based on engineering based industries such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and so on and so forth. I believe the market nowadays is growing based on mainly based on computer industry from the 2010s. When Matt the bald entered the job market, it was like computer tech and engineering tech is combining. In other words, all the miscellaneous tasks were getting digitalized and the required minimum workforce were getting reduced. Say, less job opportunities. It may seem like they are declining industries, actually not tho.
Another point is the money market. The market grows so fast. I mean, insanely fast. It is good one though. But it may be nightmare to MZ. Knowing that stock market fluctuating insanely, the gap between earned income and captital income is getting bigger. It is not bad. It is how capitalism works. The sad point is, it may demotivate many young guys who dream to climb the hierarchy of social class. It is a half fact that it is really hard to climb.
So, what Matt sees.. What MZ sees is the gap between expectation and reality. They expected stable future but it may be not based on reasons above.
He has a point. Do not go engineering like me who ain't know a shit about it. Very true.
The sad point is, he talks like he knows everything about engineering. He ain't know a shit tho.
