Also...NO BULLY LOL, i was raised on the interwebs and had no real life friends who watched anime or engaged in japanese culture, so i not only grew up on the english dic dub but my pronunciations of names like naoko takeuchi is literally bc ive been saying her name like that since i could read. Enjoy the doc and stop finding tiny things to bully me about. Step back or ill tell my mom (ง •̀_•́)ง ผ(•̀_•́ผ). Ill do better next time❤
Please don't listen to them. You don't owe them anything. I can tell you put so much work into this and that's all that matters. Keep improving where you feel you should, but we're all moonies regardless of whatever language we found the show through or how we pronounce things, we're still all connected. And you cant learn if you don't begin or try somewhere, right? You're already ahead of the game. Quite literally the heart of Sailor Moon is love. Love isnt bound by voice, nationality, race, birthplace, or yes, the way we pronounce things. As long as you lead in love, you're a-ok. Usagi/Serena wouldn't have it any other way.
Literally without Sailor Moon we would probably not have shows like Winx, LoliRock, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, The Powerpuff Girls, and hell maybe even the She-Ra reboot
And without Urusei Yatsura, Candy Candy, CutieHoney,Minky momo ,Creamy Mami ,Persia the magic fairy ,Magical Emi the magical star, Pastel Yumi, the magic idol, we MOST definitely would not have Sailor Moon. 😂
Not to be that guy, but The Powerpuff Girls debuted as a part of Cartoon Network's "World Premiere Toons" show in February of 1995 before Sailor Moon began its initial run in US syndication later that same year. The PPG was a hit out of the gate & was the most anticipated new series of all the cartoons that debuted on that program. The series itself wouldn't launch until 1998, but that part of your statement isn't accurate. The PPG's creation or success isn't due to Sailor Moon
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else say this in the comments, but your theory on Blue’s name holds up. In Australia, redheads are often nicknamed Blue or Bluey. It’s not as common anymore but it used to be a massive cultural thing - it even has a Wikipedia article you can look up! It’s a bit of a joke, obviously playing on the fact that they are the opposite of blue. So theoretically, if someone on the team was familiar with this, it’s not far fetched that they decided to name their red haired character Blue!
God, I just loved that interview with Lynn. It reminds me of when I went to a Q&A panel for Mai Aizawa, a Japanese voice actress and singer who had been in a ton of popular animes - Lucky Star, Mirai Nikki, Clannad, Negima, Nichijou, etc - and many fans were excitedly asking her about her popular work. When I came up to the mic, I asked a question that left the translator stumbling as she shifted through her notes. I started off my question by stating that my favorite roll of hers was as Yumemi from Munto (the first original series that Kyoto Animation ever made that is so obscure that KyoAni doesn't even list it on their website). The translator stopped me, shuffling through her notes, but Mai simply rested a hand on her shoulder and said "I know Munto" in Japanese. Despite not hearing the translation of my question yet, she seemed transfixed as I finished stating that I was more or less there to tell her it was my favorite role of hers and that I just wanted to know what it was like recording for the project. After she received the translation, she paused for a moment, looking stunned. Finally, she leaned forward and thanked me for my compliment, and admitted that her role as Yumemi was one that she was extremely nervous for because it was the first time she was ever casted as a main character. She went on to praise her co-star, Daisuke Ono (an insanely famous voice actor with multiple awards), because he was able to help calm her nerves and help her give her absolute best in this milestone roll of hers. Even before hearing the translation, I could absolutely see the love and passion in her eyes and carried in her voice from this charished part of her career that most of her fans don't even know about, so she rarely got to relive those memories and speak of her time back then. I had no idea that it was her first role, or even that she would react so strongly. It wasn't the first time I had approached a celebrity with an obscure piece of media and left them stunned, but her pure and genuine reaction left me loving Munto even more and now everytime I hear her role as Yumemi whenever I rewatch it, I can't help but picture the nervous newbie Mai Aizawa in the recording studio being cheered on and supported by the legendary Daisuke Ono. That thought always brings a smile to my face.
There's something so poetic about a project surrounding Sailor Moon, a story about young women growing into adulthood and discovering themselves being part of Lynn's own journey into becoming the animator she wanted to be. Really enjoyed all the twists and turns in this documentary and can't wait for the follow up, regardless of outcome search-wise!
My husband just told me he was at the expo and saw the promo for the American Sailor Moon! So funny to me that he was there for this lost media history.
Had Toon Makers' Sailor Moon stick to only 2D traditional animation instead of mixing live-action and 2D animation, TM Sailor Moon would have been green-lit, and may ran for four seasons, each with either 13 to 26 episodes. It may not be as great as the OG anime, but we might still love it as it is.
I now kinda want to see a documentary on the lost English dub of Mermaid Melody. It was dubbed by ADV but became lost media after ADV failed to find a distributor for it.
@@jadedheartsz crunchy roll has become corrupt after Sony bought it. Have not heard that they attempted their own "anime" by the name of high guardian spice? 🤔 it looked more like a gender swapped Steven universe and stole to much from anime
That cliffhanger tho.. Seriously a masterpiece of lost media hunting, right up there with how the lost media community found Cracks and Clockman. Can't wait to see where this ends
That Lynn interview was really sweet! There's something about hearing women recall their past jobs in their careers in the pre internet era that makes me feel cozy and heartened. The comment where she expressed her thoughts that the Sailor Moon live action/cartoon hybrid concept could still work and that girls needed more female super heroes reminded me of the time I got to hear Trina Robbins (a female cartoonist who also published books on the history of women cartoonists and made art for a video game in the early 90s) speak at a comic con and speak with her at her table. For lack of better words, it feels like a very 90s woman sentiment, and I think it's very sweet.
Holy crap I have a book by Trina Robbins! "The Great Women Cartoonists." (I used to draw a lot) It was one of the few non-boring gifts my late grandparents got for me. I love that book, I've read it over several times.
I think that it’d be interesting to see something like PGSM done with that hybrid- doing the fight scenes like that would allow for an easy international release, as you could have the live action segments done locally while using the animated parts- kind of like Power Rangers, but hopefully more faithfully. PGSM did some cool stuff with having the hair change entirely with the transformation, which would probably be good for the whole adaptations thing- PGSM had a bunch of twists and turns on the manga and 90s anime, and this format could allow that to occur on an international level, with each version having slightly different takes on the story, as a gimmick- this could hypothetically allow for a higher profit, as people might want to watch every version to see the different stories, and because they’re different you could sell each version as something separate.
Slight correction on Sailor Stars, it's actually a common misconception that it wasn't dubbed into English because of censorship of certain themes. In reality there was a lot of complicated behind-the-scenes stuff(which we still don't know the full details of and I suspect we never will as I have no doubt Naoko has no desire to risk pissing off the hand that feeds her) going on at Toei which caused them to refuse to license out Sailor Moon anywhere outside of Japan, not just the U.S., and that happened in 2003 and as a result it was a full decade before we saw anything new SM related outside of Japan. So the Sailor Starlights really had nothing to do with it(and I heard rumors that Naoko herself wasn't happy with how the Starlights were drastically changed from the Manga and that she herself did not want an English dub of Stars at the time for that reason). Toei didn't exactly treat Sailor Moon the best after airing it, as they let the original prints deteriorate into lousy condition(which explains why the 2004 sub-only DVDs are of such poor quality) so them arbitrarily keeping the show locked away for a decade is just par for the course for them.
Not to mention, the anime made sailor stars weird. Idk why, but instead of making the sailor stars crossdressers, they deemed it more appropriate to make them shapeshifters. Course, the anime changed a lot of things from the manga, some of it was good, like I do prefer why Serena and Endymion died in the anime than how they did in the manga, but what the anime did with the sailor stars was just bizarre. Even the new crystal anime made some weird changes, like with what happened with Haruka. Haruka's whole schtick is that she has the strengths of both sexes, and that she didn't care what her sex was because she didn't deem it important. But for some reason the new anime made her be both male and female, what to my understanding is due to a mistranslation, even though it's well established ONLY females can be Sailor Soldiers. I do love the anime, but it has caused a LOT of unnecessary drama in the community by doing odd stuff like this instead of sticking to the original storyline.
@@heavennunya809 you know I’ve though about having the sailor stars would be better if they were shapeshifters if the sailor star series were to be dubbed sooner in the past. I’m not hating the series which it’s my top 4 of my top 10 favorite anime series like the from the sci-fi series for example. The last episode may as well be like how usagi goes god mod that you won’t have to see her nude form if again was dubbed sooner in the past.
No thats not true, many countries got the liscence to dub the stars season in its first run. Including germany where im from. One of the reasons naoko refused to give out the liscence for Sailor Moon later on, was caused by the drastic changes they did to her characters in many countries. America beeing the worst by changing names, stories, japanese letters, asian food into american food. They tried everything to americanize the original anime. To this day naoko has to approve EVERYTHING. Its not toei and it never was. They also had a fallout and naoko blocked the liscencing. In germany we still get delays in dvds and manga reprints from time ro time cause of naoko. If somethings not okay with her, it has to be changed. And thats totally fine, its her baby at the end.
"Why did I bore you with my obsessive deep dive over some search for a list toy?", she says, after telling this story with some of the most enrapturing storytelling the internet has to offer.
That interview with Lynn Walsh was amazing, hearing such a passionate animator remember her early career is wonderful But hearing it right after the news of Discovery WB's mistreatment of animation and disrespect for creators makes it kinda sad 😞
@@SterlingCalm TOEI was going to do an anime adaptation of Hannah Montana, but it was cancelled and iirc no actual animation was made for it besides test music videos
I always find weird yet fascinating how the USA tries to transform Japanese media, and the whole Saban Moon thing is wild. Sailor Moon was super successful in Latin America, we got all seasons, less censorship (at least compare to whatever the USA Dubs did) all lead by a pretty faithful to the original Dub, and we got a lot more anime than English Speaking Countries. I saw the premiere of Sailor Moon by accident (greatest accident) because I was watching Saint Seiya and didn't change the channel when it was done, it was great. Guess anime in LAM was just received differently.
The thing about Sailor Moon's Mexican dub is that, although it was translated directly from the Japanese version, the characters' names were the same as the U.S. version (Serena instead of Usagi), but starting from episode 66 there were some changes, all new characters kept their Japanese names, and there some actors were replaced (Tuxedo Mask went from Genaro Vásquez to Gerardo Reyero, for example). Still, the dub was excelent, as other dubs from the same studio, Intertrack (they also dubbed Dragon Ball, Digimon and Sakura Cardcaptor there) Sailor Moon's Neutral Spanish dub is so great that almost all of the original cast reprised their roles for Crystal, the only major voice changes were for Sailor Jupiter (since her original voice actress passed away in '99), Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Saturn
Same for France, animes were very popular. Of course a lot of it got localised and a bit censored to fit children audience but the plot was still faithful overall. The ones which got the most censored where animes not created for kids, like City Hunter and its famous vegetarian restaurants replacing love hotels. Here Sailor Moon debuted on 1993 on national TV (club Dorothée) fully dubbed and was a huge success.
@@JinMeowsoon here in Latin America Saint Seiya was localised as Los Caballeros del Zodiaco and the opening song was actually the European Spanish opening which in turn was a cover of the French opening, though when it was rebroadcasted in the 2000s they replaced it with a cover version of the Japanese op/ed. Fist of the North Star was dubbed into Neutral Spanish, but it was a dub of the U.S. version and it was only broadcasted there, though recently we got a dub of one of the 2000s OVAs. City Hunter is one of the few anime based on a Shonen Jump manga that was never dubbed into Neutral Spanish.
@@JinMeowsoon ... I now imagine little kids asking their moms why Ryo (though perhaps he was named something different in France?) so often was around vegetarian restaurants, and getting some non-commital "You know how pushy vegetarians are about their diet" answers, and it amuses me greatly. But for serious now- vegetarian restaurants? They really went with THAT excuse in the French dub?
This documentary was amazing. Excellent work. Man, I was there for the “Save our Sailors” era. It was SUCH a big deal when Sailor Moon came back. Another reason Sailor Moon struggled is not only when it aired, but how it aired. I recall the show airing completely out of order making it I’m sure very confusing for the young audience it was aiming for. When it was brought back on Cartoon Network’s Toonami block, it was one of the few times anyone played the show in proper order which I think was a big help in bringing more people in. Does Toon Maker’s design of Sailor Moon look like She-Ra to anyone else?
My first thought was: there’s now way this girl can get any new information about Saban Moon, at the end it was: if somebody it’s gonna find new information it’s gonna be this girl What a masterpiece 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 every Moonie should watch this
This was one of the best documentaries I have seen on RUclips. As a first gen "Moonie" who discovered Sailor Moon when it first premiered in the US and was genuinely molded in the best way by it, I sincerely thank you for doing this work. It was so much fun to go through memory lane of the niche parts of PGSM like SOS Sailor Moon!
i always really liked the localization of "serena" v "usagi". "usagi" was supposed to be evocative of the rabbit in the moon legend, and audiences in japan would get the reference. "serena" was supposed to be evocative of serene=tranquil=tranquility base=the moon landing, and audiences in america would get the reference. it hit exactly the way it was supposed to, unlike the gobshite cardcaptor sakura dub that picked random-ass white names and called it a day
I had some thoughts about this documentary: I HAVE THE MOON CYCLE...and boy, I was surprised where it was originally from. It was too bad it was opened, but now I have a goldmine of a toy. But wow...you dug further than ANYONE has ever done on the infamous "Saban Moon" and delivered a goldmine of finds. And one more thing... WHEN'S PART TWO!? 🤩
I have one as well. I could never get the gold stars to stay on the cycle and one of the wheels would always fall off. I never played with it because of how it essentially just fell apart from being taken out of the box for the first time.
Oh my god. You're AMAZING!!!!!!! Congratulations on getting actual results. You had me crying the way you depicted Lynn's story. And I'm just in awe of how dedicated and unrelentingly passionate you are. All of Sailor Moon history owes so much to you for your efforts! ♡♡♡ And thank you. I was one of those little girls waking up at 6am to catch Sailor Moon airing season 1 on weekday mornings. Devastated when they stopped airing it. And so excited to finally find a Renaissance for it in the late 90s. Websites like SaveOurSailors, and other fan run websites were my hobby through the early 2000s. I remember having to download only one episode at a time of the Sailor Stars fansub, watch it, then painfully delete the fule just so that the computer had enough internal space to download the next episode. You brought back so many precious memories of my childhood. Thank you.
Nobody makes me cry my own tears but the part when Lynn Walsh meet Chuck Jones had me tearing up so much touching amazing documentary best 1 hour 33 minutes and 55 seconds of my life
Sailor Moon SOS was how I got in touch with Tracey Hoyt (original voice actress for Chibiusa/Rini) and ended up conducting a little interview with her when I was 12 for my Sailor Moon message board RPG. It blue my tiny preteen mind that someone who had done all this work on a show that I loved so dearly would actually respond. I ended up finding her on Twitter several months back and mentioned it to her, and she *remembered* me! Sailor Moon was a big inspiration to me in so many ways (if my user name and profile pic are any indication), and this was just one part that solidified my place in the fandom. tl;dr: SOS was an incredible website and Tracey Hoyt is an absolute sweetheart.
Wow!! I love this so much! These were such different times! I was able to email a feminist icon of mine when I was that age and I was stunned she responded with a full message. Back in the day when celebrities and famous people would reply with letters/emails. Tracey Hoyt was such an iconic voice for the show, that's so incredible she remembered you!!
What I love about your content is the comforting nostalgia you bring to it. It’s nothing forced but just genuine and relatable. The wait was well worth it ✌️
Given how the original translation projects around the world handled LGBT and GNC concepts, I shudder with both fear and curiosity wondering how these American Moon projects would have butchered things like Haruka and Michiru's and Kunzite and Zoisite's relationships, the Starlights' genderswap gimmick, or the large percentage of male characters that dress and act in atypically masc fashion. If the dubs were a mess to begin with, the adaptations could have been an unholy nightmare.
I have a feeling they probably wouldn't have even tried and would've instead just done their own thing entirely. It's pretty clear that they weren't exactly setting out to tell the story of Sailor Moon as much as they were hoping to cash in on it.
I just needed to pause at 17 minutes in to comment because I am already very emotional from that introduction. Discovering Sailor Moon when I was a small kid, in Ireland in the late 90's + early 2000's had a profound positive impact on me. I found it not long before puberty started and I was aware of my bisexuality at this stage. They only aired season 1 + 2 on the British station I watched it on so I eventually managed to get my parents to buy the VHS tapes up to Season 3 including movies. Even though the English dub made Haruka and Michiru "cousins" I understood immediately what I was actually looking at and it meant so much to me. I'll continue watching now. Thank you for making this docu.
You definetly deserve more subs for your amazing works, you are not just trying to cover and find lost media, but also documenting the whole process and showing how tedious it can really be. Your videos are amazing to watch!
Raven, you've absolutely outdone yourself!! The fact that you were able to find anything about any of this is an absolute *gift* to the moonie community, and your hard work has paid off!! I don't know how you're gonna outdo this one, but I can't wait to see what you do next!! ❤🌙
I loved the part about Lynn Walsh! I have seen her dedication as she drew, non-stop, for an entire weekend. It would be great to see a whole documentary by you on women animators of the hand-drawn days!
Phenomenal, phenomenal work, can't wait for the follow-up! I'm pretty sure that SOS site was where I learned the word "anime" in 1997! Let's all buy unfrosted strawberry Pop-Tarts to show 'em we want more Sailor Moon!
As a huge SAILOR MOON FAN, I have to say THANK YOU!!!! Your research, your interviews and all your hard work touch me! I liked and subscribed, I give you all my support!!!! Awesome!
This documentary is excellent, I’m about to watch part 2. OMG I was SCREAMING over Lynn’s interview! What a moment omg like literally imagine the feelings she was experiencing. This is so beyond iconic, thank you for going through LENGTHS to make this happen. Talk about a literal legend 😮💨😭❤️
This era was way after my time, but hearing the licensing and distribution history behind one of the biggest icons in animation is absolutely fascinating. Its so cool seeing you develop into standout online documentaries!
That story about Lynn meeting one of the all time greats was absolutely mind-blowing to see, and the animatic style really does it justice. Honestly, That might be better than the whole Sailor moon thing :)
This was absolutely phenomenal!! You dived deep into actually researching something many moonies, like myself, have wondered about for years! Outstanding job! Can’t wait for part 2!! 🌙
Rather you succeed or not, there's no denying your hard work and dedication to your craft. I think it's safe to say you're becoming a legend in Lost Media. Cheers, Raven.
When you announced a documentary on one of my favourite TV shows growing up, I got so hyped, but now that I have seen it all the way through, I can't wait to see a follow-up video, the suspense is enough to make me hunger for more, fantastic video, amazing searching skills, and beautifully made
One of my favorite parts of these videos is the journey of trying to communicate with the sources, it's really cool to hear that insight about what it's like to research this sort of thing, and the fact that some mysteries are still left open makes me so excited for future follow-ups. This was fascinating!
I’ve just discovered you! As a huge Sailor Moon fan (and content creator too) your video popped up on my feed’s algorithm. Super inspiring and wonderfully done! You’ve gained a new subscriber 💖
THE CLIFFHANGER!!!!! Sailor Moon is such an important show to me, Usagi taught me the kind of person I want to be and offered me solace in my gender in a time I had to act like a boy to everyone else in the world. This whole thing was so good and made me so happy, amazing work!!!!
So you went looking for Saban Moon? I'm happy to hear that. The way you looked for the employees and contacts mirrors the way I went about finding the Genesis copy of the Akira video game. Going through resumes, calling random numbers, dead ends, asking for names. It's pretty cool. Sending photos usually helped jog their memories. By sheer luck, two copies survived, and good thing too, because one of them didn't function properly. You did a good job on the search and this video. :) I'd make a video on the finding of it, but I don't know how honestly. :p
I remember sailor moon coming on between 6 and 7 am on channel 5 some mornings. I always wanted to watch it, because the episodes I saw caught my attention as a kid, but I never seemed to find it at the same time. It was this phantom show that would appear before most kids were awake during the school week, and I only ever seemed to see it on accident. When toonami started playing it I was floored, because I recognized it! From then on, my friends and I were obsessed.
WOW, I've been watching so much lost media stuff for the past age, and this video is a month old and I haven't seen it until now?! This is such a ridiculously high-quality documentary and I'm shocked it doesn't have more views or likes. I'm not even a fan of Sailor Moon (though I did enjoy the theme song when I heard it on TV, haha) but I LOVE seeing these searches for lost media and you absolutely delivered here, holy crap! Gonna go back and watch your other Lost Media vids as well and I'm hyped to see more of this one. Fantastic work!!
This was amazing! Thank you so much for your hard work for us Moonies! You unlocked memories for me and it was such a ride. Also, Lynn is just so sweet. I literally gasped when she told her story because as an animation nerd I am obsessed with Chuck Jones and Don Bluth. Like, WHAAAAAAT!?
This is amazing! I also really loved hearing Lynn's stories when she was on the project. Hope all who were on the project would be able to compile their experiences in a book or a documentary. That would be pretty cool.
I personally didn't know much about sailor moon my self, but I genuinely enjoyed learning about sailor moon and your process of how everything came together for you. From the chapters in your production, to the unfolding of events, to the detail you included . *chef kiss* A MASTERPIECE . Looking forward to the rest of it. Amazing job! Bobdunga
Sailor Moon certainly changed my life. It was my window into Japanese culture and the very fact that third grade me had the dream of some day watching it in the original Japanese without subtitles was the catalyst to how I am in Japan now and have made it my home. I get to share it now with my sons and I just went to the Sailor Moon Museum in Roppongi the other day that commemorates 30 years of Sailor Moon. Several of the journeys the characters go through resonated so strongly with me as a child and even now I will revisit certain episodes as a comfort blanket when I am feeling low.
I was SO obsessed with this show when I was in the third grade.. it played at 2:30pm - I VHS taped it every day & watched it until it started again and I remember sobbing in confusion when it simply stopped in "season 3" & began again. I only understood a few years later with the internet and fanfic. I just turned 39.
This took some damn effort, time and tears, I can feel your passion pouring through the screen! I never knew it would have ever known this much about the western sailor moon without this video, you beat believe I subscribed! Keep up the great work Raven~
I was at an ALA panel back in 2010 I remember seeing these Saban moon clips, I never thought I would see more than those clips shown to me that day, thank you for this video!!
As a self proclaimed Sailor Moon expert with two podcasts on the matter, I went into this video thinking it would be all information I already knew and would be just a fun way to waste an hour and a half, but holy hell was I surprised! I knew most of the stuff about Saban Moon since it’s such a cult phenomenon within the fandom, but I had NO idea that there was even talks of a Disney Sailor Moon, let along that Geena Davis and Melissa Joan Hart were in talks to be Beryl and Sailor Moon!! That is absolutely insane! That being said, this was so well done and I’m really hoping we get a Part 2 with the conclusion on The Man in Red! So so good!
I found myself smiling throughout so much of this. No one else is putting out work of this caliber, you really oughta be proud, Raven! I look forward to the follow-up!
The way the ending of this documentary lit a fire in my heart. I once wanted to be animator, idk why I stopped that dream but my god do I want to get up and create right now.
I WISH more of RUclips was this well produced. Seriously, props. I’m not really a huge sailor moon buff, but this better than a lot of professional documentaries today.
I rememebr when Sailor Moon aired in dead timeslots. I was one of those freak kids that woke up veryearly in the morning on the west coast and would occupy myself with tv volume on very low while my parents slept. I adored this show so my parents bought the movies on VHS for me and the books when they showed up at the Japanese flea market.
the whole swapping luna and artimes colors in Saban Moon is so funny to me, in the Portuguese dub they only switched genders. Luna became a male cat and Artemis became a female cat called Artemisa. It was also the reason why they didn't aired one of the sailormoon movies (the one where Luna is turned into a human girl) because they though it would confuse the audience
Thank you so much for your dedication for reasearching this! As a 90s kid Sailor Moon played such a big role in my childhood - even though I'm not from the US - everything related is so interesting so thank you for all of your efforts to bring this deep dive to life!
THAT CLIFFHANGER!! Oh, my heart! As someone approaching their mid 40's now I recall the entire S.O.S. campaign from back in the day. You've done such an incredible job through your hard work and perseverance. For the first time in a good 20 years I feel like we might actually get to see the Toon Makers pilot. Even if it's bad (and I'm not as certain as others that it is) I still want to see it with my own eyes. I can't wait for part two!! 🥰
Just found this and want to say great investigative journalism and it was fun to go back down memory lane of the 90s and learn more about America's introduction to Sailor Moon. Crazy to think there could have been a world where North America didn't get Sailor Moon because that show truly changed my life!
This is outstanding work. The persistency, the stamina, the analytical journalism and the storytelling in this video of the whole process on top - incredible! Thank you so much for charing your work with us!
I'm so so so excited about this !!! Thank you for your hard work you put into this ! I'm a 30 year old mom of 3, & this just sent me way back. I remember SOS & finding out all of the censorship as a young child on the internet. This show will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart !
Literal chills right now. Amazing work as usual truly one of the most underrated youtubers on this platform with incredibly editing skills. Really excited to hear more.
It's entirely possible that the English logo and character names were provided by Toei themselves. The same thing happened with Magic Knight Rayearth, as TMS provided an English logo for use with the Sega Saturn game and the anime, and had a set of Americanized character names that they had tried to force onto them (which goes into a deeper rabbit hole involving a cancelled Rayearth dub for Fox Kids, but I digress).
That's right. The logo was the official international one that was present in any other localization, not only the american dub. As for the names, probably were official localizations too by Toei. Those names are also in the Latin American dub made in Mexico, and that was dubbed directly from the japanese version (not the Dic version).
@@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736 I never said anything about America in regards to Sailor Moon, and all three English adaptations of Rayearth (the TV anime, the OVA, and the Sega Saturn game) were done by American companies.
I am so grateful for the amount of effort you put into this. I couldn't find anything on it, but, for the past 15 years, every once in a while, it would cross my mind, and I'd just wonder. You took the initiative and got answers, and my soul can be at peace thanks to your diligence
That cliffhanger left me at the end of my seat! But still, this gotta be one of my favorite lost media documentaries I've seen, fantastic work on this! I can't wait to see the follow up to it!
the way these documentaries make me care that much for things I usually would barely spare a second thought is astonishing^^ also those production values are such a flex, the amount of effort in this is insane!
I’m EXTREMELY EXTREMELY GRATEFUL for ALL THE SAILOR MOON fans if not for people who started the S.O.S. (Save Our Sailors) movement in 2002 and just the fandom in general, we wouldn’t have the Sailor Moon we have today. That’s why I would never consider myself a #1 fan of Sailor Moon because if that were true the show wouldn’t be as big as it is today. I’m so glad we have all the fans we do. THANK YOU ALL 🌙 I was apart of that movement with my Angelfire webpage lol 😆 I also remember when Sailor Moon was taken off Toonami it was 2002 and Hamtaro started taking over and eventually replaced it. The last episode of Sailor Moon that aired on Toonami was the Super S arch episode 38 Queen Nehelenia’s circus tent exploded during a bout of “Moon Cosmic Dream Action!” And that was it Hamtaro took over. At first I thought it was just a promo episode to promote the show so they put sailor moon in the back seat for one episode but NOPE! It was a full Hamtaro take over and I was so sad.
Oh wow I REMEMBER THAT! Thank you for unlocking that memory for me. I was super into SM as a kid and my younger sibling loved Hamtaro; I remember being SO confused and disappointed with the weird swap out, and we just never got an explanation. Gods, I haven’t thought about that in decades.
I was at some anime convention in Ohio and explained this at some sailor moon panel and the hosts acted as if I lost my goddamn mind when I said this. I am so happy that you confirmed what I knew to be true
The amount of time and dedication you spent on trying to find and reminisce of the mysterious Saban Moon, is really impressive! This was very informative. I always have been curious about Saban moon after finding a picture of Saban Moon’s Sailor Moon and Darian online back in 2012 when I was a kid just discovering the world of Sailor Moon and anime in general. Sailor Moon holds a special place in my heart, while not my first exposure to Anime (that would be Dragob Ball Z and YuGiOh) it was my first exposure to the Magical Girl genre. It led me to find shows like Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew, Full Moon Wo Sagashite, and so many more. Being 20 years old now, I can honestly say discovering Sailor Moon and anime in general has made a huge impact on me, I have so much more appreciation for the animation industry and the dedicated fans. This video has given me back that small hope I had as a child in discovering the mystery behind the Live action to animation Sailor Moon and what it was. The story is far from over.
I'm from the Philippines and an avid fan of Sailormoon and bumping into this video brought a lot of memories.... Sailormoon was just a big hit in the Philippines during the 90s and I never thought they canceled it in the US. I love this documentary and your devotion...love love love from the Phils.
Raven really has a hidden skill for this I wonder if she ever even dreamed that doing videos like this would be her road to fame. I could see her eventually having a team of people that would help with this in the future.
It was 1995. I wasn't very old, but my dad told me about a show on UPN that came after Bananas In Pajamas. He did his best to explain what the characters looked like and the general premise - bless his heart, he really did try. So, excited, I told my dad to wake me up when he got up for work. 5:30 or 6:00 AM, I don't remember, but it was one of those two. Needless to say, I fell in love with the series from that moment forward. He always tried to find the dolls to buy them for me. Then, we got dial-up internet, and... man, that really opened my eyes to so much. Haruka was my bi awakening (as I'm sure it was for many lol.) Well, I'm 36 now, and as I write this, I still have a lot of my old merchandise--the clunky locket and moon stick that played music even though they stopped working years ago. My fiance likes to tell people, "She told me she wasn't into anime and now our apartment is covered in Sailor Moon stuff." ... anyway, thank you. This was so lovely and extremely bittersweet since my dad passed away not all that long ago. oh I just saw there's another video, yay.
This video was great. and Lynn's intervied left me so warm and fuzzy. To hear how much love she has for the industry as an art form was great. I hope you come out with a part two soon, and am eagerly waiting. You are an amazing producer/editor.
Loved this video and all the reenacting scenes of you researching. This was hilarious and informative. Thank you for your sleuthing, patience and the deep dive. Great job with styling, pacing, and with your findings! The ending was so moving.
Omg I didn’t even mean to watch this I accidentally clicked on it and couldn’t stop watching. This was so good and so in depth. I hope you’re able share you’re interview with them!

I'm curious to see what came of your talk with the people at the end. The suspense is killing me. Did they manage to help you uncover the lost pilot?
Sailor Moon was a part of my childhood. 💖🌜

Hello I love the She Ra reboot! It has such amazing representation of autism!
And without Urusei Yatsura, Candy Candy, CutieHoney,Minky momo

,Persia the magic fairy ,Magical Emi the magical star, Pastel Yumi, the magic idol, we MOST definitely would not have Sailor Moon. 😂
Yes we would have bffr
Not to be that guy, but The Powerpuff Girls debuted as a part of Cartoon Network's "World Premiere Toons" show in February of 1995 before Sailor Moon began its initial run in US syndication later that same year.
The PPG was a hit out of the gate & was the most anticipated new series of all the cartoons that debuted on that program. The series itself wouldn't launch until 1998, but that part of your statement isn't accurate. The PPG's creation or success isn't due to Sailor Moon
@@FireMadeFleshII I think the general visuals and buildup was inspired by Sailor Moon
I too love Munto and that’s really cool to learn. Thanks for sharing your story!
Gonna check out Munto now
That's such a delightful story, I've never heard of munto but I'm glad to hear this since she clearly loved the role so much
I literally started CHEERING when she found Lynn! I can't even imagine how exciting that must've been for her!
The canceled American Sailor moon will always be a truly fascinating enigma to me.
I just want to know everything there is to know about it, as much as humanly possible.

@@RealRussellJones86 I heard some countries that dubbed Stars back in the day painted a purple bikini over Uasgi in her final form.
@@jadedheartsz The only other dub I’ve seen was in Spanish and they let her just hang out full nude, as I the original. 😂

That interview with Lynn Walsh was amazing, hearing such a passionate animator remember her early career is wonderful
But hearing it right after the news of Discovery WB's mistreatment of animation and disrespect for creators makes it kinda sad 😞
This girl should try to find the lost Hannah Montana anime that Disney canceled
What’s that?
Still, the dub was excelent, as other dubs from the same studio, Intertrack (they also dubbed Dragon Ball, Digimon and Sakura Cardcaptor there)
Sailor Moon's Neutral Spanish dub is so great that almost all of the original cast reprised their roles for Crystal, the only major voice changes were for Sailor Jupiter (since her original voice actress passed away in '99), Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Saturn
I mean, you can't get worse than "extremely affectionate cousins" with censorship. Leave it to the U.S. to do that😂
@@JinMeowsoon ...
It's definitely got Filmation vibes to It's look

This was one of the best documentaries I have seen on RUclips. As a first gen "Moonie" who discovered Sailor Moon when it first premiered in the US and was genuinely molded in the best way by it, I sincerely thank you for doing this work. It was so much fun to go through memory lane of the niche parts of PGSM like SOS Sailor Moon!
Amazing job! As someone who studied journalism, I really appreciate your persistence in getting the answers that you were looking for. Great work!
i always really liked the localization of "serena" v "usagi". "usagi" was supposed to be evocative of the rabbit in the moon legend, and audiences in japan would get the reference. "serena" was supposed to be evocative of serene=tranquil=tranquility base=the moon landing, and audiences in america would get the reference. it hit exactly the way it was supposed to, unlike the gobshite cardcaptor sakura dub that picked random-ass white names and called it a day
Lol okay but I literally have never met a single person besides you who is 'aware' that Serena is a reference to anything.
When I was younger it reminded me a lot of Selene, which is the personification of the moon in goddess form, so I thought it was because of that lol
@@miyuu1317 That is why, they just picked a less "ancient" sounding iteration of that name.
I thought they chose it based on Serenity?
It's not like they could just translate Usagi to 'rabbit' for the English version lmao
Red Bard's video on Saban Moon is actually what led me to your channel in the first place! Cool to see things come full-circle like this!
I had some thoughts about this documentary:
I HAVE THE MOON CYCLE...and boy, I was surprised where it was originally from. It was too bad it was opened, but now I have a goldmine of a toy.
But wow...you dug further than ANYONE has ever done on the infamous "Saban Moon" and delivered a goldmine of finds. And one more thing...
WHEN'S PART TWO!?
🤩
I also have one and spent a lot of time wondering when I'd see it during the anime when I was younger.
I hoped there was people that had it, actually looks like a fun toy!
I have one as well. I could never get the gold stars to stay on the cycle and one of the wheels would always fall off. I never played with it because of how it essentially just fell apart from being taken out of the box for the first time.
I cannot fathom the surreal wonder of being an aspiring intern animator and finding THE Chuck Jones just casuallu drawing at your desk one day

This is brilliant, Raven! You've grown into such a terrific content creator! Just incredible. Keep living your dreams, cousin.
It's pretty clear that they weren't exactly setting out to tell the story of Sailor Moon as much as they were hoping to cash in on it.
they probably would've turned Amara and Michelle into sisters.
The dubs aren't THAT bad though.

*ahem* Fighting evil by the moonlight, winning love by daylight, never running from a real fight, she is the one named Sailor Moon!
Bobdunga
Your email responses to Dale were so professional and respectfully written. I gotta take notes.
Hello from blameitonjorge! Thank you for your hard work for lost media!
Amazing documentary, thanks for taking your time to combine many things into an incredible video!
This took some damn effort, time and tears, I can feel your passion pouring through the screen! I never knew it would have ever known this much about the western sailor moon without this video, you beat believe I subscribed! Keep up the great work Raven~
Holy crap I LOVE the level of detail. Bravissima!
This was absolutely amazing, worth the wait, and I hope you're as proud of it as we are. Good shit Bobby
This is one of the best video essays I've seen! And very thorough investigation. Thanks for uploading :)
Why does america keep getting blamed for the dub when it was the Canadians who translated it 😂😂😂
@@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736 I never said anything about America in regards to Sailor Moon, and all three English adaptations of Rayearth (the TV anime, the OVA, and the Sega Saturn game) were done by American companies.
I am so grateful for the amount of effort you put into this. I couldn't find anything on it, but, for the past 15 years, every once in a while, it would cross my mind, and I'd just wonder. You took the initiative and got answers, and my soul can be at peace thanks to your diligence
20:43 dude I STAYED on Castle in the Sky. That was my favorite website in the world when I was kid 😂😂😂
That cliffhanger left me at the end of my seat!
But still, this gotta be one of my favorite lost media documentaries I've seen, fantastic work on this! I can't wait to see the follow up to it!
I am so stoked for part 2 you have absolutely no idea!!!! Great job, Raven!
the way these documentaries make me care that much for things I usually would barely spare a second thought is astonishing^^ also those production values are such a flex, the amount of effort in this is insane!
THANK YOU ALL 🌙
I was apart of that movement with my Angelfire webpage lol 😆
I also remember when Sailor Moon was taken off Toonami it was 2002 and Hamtaro started taking over and eventually replaced it. The last episode of Sailor Moon that aired on Toonami was the Super S arch episode 38 Queen Nehelenia’s circus tent exploded during a bout of “Moon Cosmic Dream Action!”
And that was it Hamtaro took over.
This is indeed a labor of love. Thank you for putting all this time and effort into this!!!
I'm so excited for the next part of this!! You seem to so far have amazing luck of getting the information you need just when all hope seems lost.
