You don't have to go to caves to find glow worms either, they like places that are sheltered and moist so can often be found in the bush, on sheltered banks of streams and low cliffs etc.
I love exploring caves but I've never been to one with Glow Worms. That was so cool. I did enjoy the science lesson too. Thanks for the cave to explore in Colorado also!!
My wife & I done both. (Caves one day & Hobiton another) However with the caves we did the Black Water Rafting experience, where you abseil in to the caves & float along in tubes. Great experience for approx 3.5 hours. A little expensive, but very enjoyable.
Theres been a lot of changes to the main waitomo caves since the 90s. They completely redesigned the entrance and in fact bored another entrance tunnel into it. The main chambers have new walkways and the climate control in the cave is far more sympathetic to the wildlife. Its worth a visit if you are in NZ as I know the village is doing it tough without overseas tourists.
We've seen the 'Jewel of the Otways' in Victoria so we didn't go see the glow-worms in NZ but if I'm ever in NZ again I'll definitely go there it looks fantastic.... we love NZ so im sure I'll be back there one day.
If you are visiting Waitomo the black water rafting leaves the walking caves tours for dead in my opinion. There are several companies which run them and they range in difficulty level from quite easy to full on adventures. You get to see far more glow worms on a black water raft trip than any of the walking caves because the larvae are in their natural environment, whereas the walking tours have modified the caves a lot to enable access. Anyone with average fitness is fine for easy rafting trips, just need to bring your own swimwear, the company will supply a wetsuit, gumboots, hardhat and headlight. If you feel the cold though you could wear top polypro or those lightweight neoprene top people wear on the beach.
Guess we have to go back :) I am a little freaked out from dark, confined spaces and I don’t like the cold or getting wet, so it wasn’t the most appealing adventure for us to do, but I think now I would muster the courage to do it!! :)
@@HappyHoppe The easy trips say with Caveworld only involve having to crouch down for one part on entry to cave (so its light) and then the rest of trip you are with a group of people and guides and there are no tight squeezes. Though a few surprises along the way. As to cold and wet, its caving. Hence the wetsuits. Almost everything outdoors in NZ you have to be prepared for cold and wet. Milford sound has a rainfall of 12 metres a year, thats why the waterfalls and rainforest exist there to start with. People aren't visiting the place for our deserts.
Guys, it's not polo but polocrosse. Polo uses a hard head on the end of the stick and you whack the ball but polocrosse uses what looks like a tennis racket type head which can catch and holds the ball.
I'm pretty sure that that was a game of polo cross which is supposed to be a cross between polo and lacrosse you can tell because they had little nets on sticks rather than mallets. But I'm no expert.
Oh thanks! That makes sense! We had no idea! 😂 Never seen polo before in person, but now that I think back to what I’ve seen in movies, it is always mallets for polo! :)

Awesome 👏 yeah, we may have to go back to do the rafting! That sounds fun :)
I went too waitomo last year too! It’s so pretty walking through the cave
Gosh, it's so different to the time I saw them when I was a teenager. Mind you, that was back in 1977.
🤩 did they have the paved walkway down to the cave or did you have to climb down?
@@HappyHoppe It was a wooden walkway back then.

We are not allowed to use a good long exposure camera with the tripod in the caves to capture glowwerms?
Wonderful !

Ooo, I just looked up pictures of that! Looks like a beautiful walk and a more affordable way to see glowworms 😊
Yeah beautiful place and I'm always about free lol
You can go black water rafting in Waitomo too.
Yeah, that looked pretty cool! We saw people tubing!!
Glow worms also in south-east Queensland, Australia.
Yes true... Springbrook and tambourine maintains, last time I was there was the early 2000s and they were free then are they still?
Yes, it was so great to see glowworms while we were in that part of the world since they are unique to Australia and New Zealand :)
Ashamed to say I've never been. We've been in Aus since 93.
It’s a pretty unique thing to see! :) they are only in Australia and New Zealand

Lake Taupo is the best.
