Nikki, it's heartbreaking to hear what you had to go through as a child, but at the same time, it's heartwarming to witness the person you have become.
Agreed, it is heartwarming to know that someone can go through that kind of trauma or toxic stress and recover to be such a positive and motivating individual who creates entertaining and inspiring content. I’m sure support from Jason and other family has helped over the years.

Yeah. That was awesome. A lot of us have been through horrible abuse. Hearing her story after watching and enjoying them for years was awesome. It only grows my love and respect for her and them.
I grew up in Auckland. One half of my family came to Waipu about 160 years ago. Visited the caves many times over the years. A family friend had a farm right next to the caves a we used to stay with him as children. He was a half blind pig farmer and worked the property himself. On my honeymoon 1973 I took my wife to the cave. A nice San Francisco girl. She sat in the wet cave for at least an hour just looking at the lights. Up until that poin she had not believed me when I told her about glow worms. Yours is one of the rare videos I have seen that starts to show how bright the caves can be. I have sat in the cave and read a book if it us silent. In the summer in the north I have seen small concentrations of glowworms on the bank of creeks when I have been camping. Love the video. Thank you.
Nikki & Jason, this was a wonderful episode on many levels: 1) The “risk” undertaken to find the Glow Worms in their natural habitat; 2) The lengths you took to capture them on both stalls & video; 3) The depths (how far in) you went to explore the cavern. The woman singing in the cavern was beautiful, as you correctly called it being like in a cathedral, and was quite the treat. Nikki, I am so sorry that your early childhood was so traumatic. Very few of us actually lives the "leave it to beaver" childhood we saw on tv. Most of us have some early trauma to deal with as adults. Thank you for bringing some "light" to those of us who often have had to deal with varying levels of darkness in our lives! And living out a childhood dream is a WONDERFUL experience isn't it! I teared up when you told your story, it really touched my heart. That lady singing was like a healing. Just perfect for the setting. Thankyou both for sharing. It was beautiful.
Nicky and Jason, two of the most decent You tubers on sailing Chanel ⛵. I'm an Aussie and I've loved your authenticity, your sheer determination, the videography is simply stunning always. The one stand out overall is your connection to humanity, this is what places you ahead of the big number chanels some that sold themselves out and took without Truley giving back under the guise of all the isms! Thank you Nicky for being so brave, no wonder Jason adores you..
I've always known (or thought) that it takes a lot of work (drones, time lapse, redo's, back and forth) to produce a video. Today's video was so great in so many ways; the least of which was the time and effort to get such great footage to share. GWTW is a true treasure.
I cried so hard hearing this. That scenario would be my nightmare for my child. I am so glad your father got you back. You deserve to have a beautiful rest of your life as it is, but especially after that horrible circumstance. So glad you two are together living your best lives. You are both beautiful people.
Nikki, My wife and I wait patiently every week to watch your videos together. Your enthusiasm for life is so uplifting and your humble beginnings give so much hope for others. This is one of our favorite RUclips channels. Your photography and story telling are truly outstanding. Thanks for the hope you give.
I remember the glowworm cave in New Zealand on the South Island back in 89aaaaaaaaaaaa' when I was a middle age traveler/ We had to boat across a lake at sunset then board some little punts to tour the cave. I remember it like a strange night sky that dripped little yuckie bit on you as you looked up. Thanks for another good video. We only had film back then.
I love how open you guys are. I feel I’ve learned more about you guys this New Zealand trip, than in years of watching the channel. Keep up the excellent work!!😀
It takes a lot of courage to expose childhood pain to complete strangers. Thank you for trusting us with that. Keep on exploring and loving and glowing, you two. You bring a wonderful light into our lives with each adventure you share.
I did have the “Leave It To Beaver” childhood. It took me a lot of years to understand that was not how everyone grew up. Nikki, you bravely revealing peeks into your life really touches my life. Thank you for sharing your story. I did actually cry. I’ve followed Gone with the Wynn’s for a long time. You never fail to give me joy & adventure❤️
Hey there! It was so nice of you to share that post and I would imagine not incredibly easy given today's climate. I wanted to let you know from someone who had a rough start, that for all of us it really makes a difference to know what is possible. We need healthy people living what is possible to their potential for the rest of us to heal.
Mark twain once said" The two most important days of you life. The day you were born, and the day you discover why" I feel as if you just shared with us as to why. Your continued transparency with us has helped so many. Thank you both for the life lessons and daily journeys you are taking us on.
Incredible how you got such a lousy start in life, but turned out so well. So many other people in the same situation end up just repeating their parents lives and failing. How did you ever succeed so well and turn out so well rounded and stable??? And dealing with your step sister thrown in for good measure! Amazing. Job well done Nikki.
When that young woman was singing, it sounded like something elvish from Lord of The Rings. This was a great episode. Thanks so much for sharing. You are both amazing. Stay safe out there!
@@familyupgrade That's right, they filmed LotR in NZ! I'd not have guessed that Howard Shore's leitmotifs were garnered from extensive exposure to NZ native culture. Most of his music does not sound Maori. And this seems about as far from Haka as I can guess. The _Lament for Gandalf_ in Lothlorien from the movie "Fellowship of Ring" was the one I was reminded of. Now I realize the young woman's chant is not the same, just reminiscent. In fact, it also reminds me of some of the leitmotifs found in the series Doctor Who, perhaps one of the more contemporary seasons, with maybe Tennant or Smith portraying the Doctor. Perhaps some musical progressions are universal. ruclips.net/video/YMjKPVBNQ0E/видео.html
@@familyupgrade Or maybe you could be less cynical. Maybe it was based on the actual writings of J.R.R. Tolkien, after all, he did create the world, the Elvish language and the songs. He was a professor of linguistics after all.
Thank you, NIkki, for your courage to share your story. You never know who will find courage in your story to share their own with someone who can help them process the trauma of childhood. This is what makes the Wynn’s story so compelling-your transparency, your struggles, your personalities and your victories. Thank you both so much for the great sharing of life you two are doing. It’s inspiring!
Angel your piece to camera was so moving perhaps that experience. Has made you wonderful person you are today it also helps that you look like a more beautiful version of Audrey Hepburn keep on being perfect. X .
Aw Nikki! ❤️ I just want to give that baby Nikki a hug and tell her that she will grow up to be an amazing, capable woman who will create a beautiful life full of safety AND adventure. Also, excellent job with the time lapse, Jason!! 🎉
Nikki , you and Jason are always an inspiration to me. You both have such admirable qualities, and you are the kind of people I enjoy being near. You both are such "Can do" people. Nikki, the additional story of the rough start to your life makes you even more of a warrior. EVERY ONE has a story that could have made excuses for a stagnet life. It seems to me, only the special ones have the ability to take charge of their lives, and vow to enjoy it. I really really enjoy your weekly episodes. I love EVERYTHING about it-- the adventure, the sailing, the appreciation for glorious mother nature, the problem solving, goal setting, and now the overcoming adverstiy that you have so graciously shared. I want so bad for some of the obstacles you and Jason have been experiencing, since the pandemic, to lighten up already!! You both deserve some more stress free adventures, and maybe even some easier freedom to visit the special people, and family in your lives. Stay safe, healthy, and continue to embrace your optimistic attitude that has been an amazing fuel as you go forward.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I just want to say that. Look how far you’ve come. My mother was a serious alcoholic. A lot of trauma and gaslighting. Crippling victimhood. Thank God you survived it! I am thankful for you both. Such an awesome video! Cheers!
Nikki, you had me in tears. I’m so sorry you had to go through that, and love that you are such a strong and positive woman today. The photo of you and Jason kissing under the glow worms warmed my heart as it made me feel that you are safe and loved. Thanks for being so brave in telling your story.
Oh my dears, thank you for your honesty and openness. I'm a retired pediatrician and for every horror story I have heard in my life, the many many of them, you have blasted right through all that darkness with a bolt of lightning flashing hope into every one. You made me cry, I'm so happy just to see you free and doing, living, loving what makes you happy. The Universe smiles for you.
That snapshot of Jason kissing you and the glow worms in the background. You came full circle, and Jason and the worms are keeping you safe. Good on you:)
Ok so I was moved by what you shared. I too understand those kind of child hood challenges no child shout have to endure. I have always liked both you guys but now your on a pedestal. I’m really proud of the person you have become. Your dad must be amazing!! It’s a real ugly thing the illness of addiction. Your a brave beautiful person. Thanks for being real. Peace. Your fan Jason.
Nikki, your willingness to share the deepest parts of you is one of the reasons your channel is so successful. Humans are built for relationship and even though it's virtual, you and Jason connect with us on an intimate level. Keep living life to the fullest and pursuing your dreams! We're all rooting for you!
Wow! Thank you so much for telling us your story. Maybe someone can connect with it and help them through their troubled past as well. What a beautiful cave!
Fun fact: While this specific species is found only in NZ, this genus of glowworms, Arachnocampa, can also be found in Australia. And while that genus of glowworms are the larva of fungus gnats, there are also glowworms who are the larva of beetles. The Phengodidae family (or glowworm beetles as they are called) are found in the Americas. This family also has railroad worms, which glow a RED light as a warning to predators. Even firefly larvae glow! So to those who won't or will never be able to make it to NZ to see these caves, you're still in luck! Mother Nature is incredible and mind-blowing, isn't it? I'm sorry about the rough childhood that you had, and I'm glad your dad rescued you from that sick mother who thought it was a great idea to sell their own CHILD. I too that a rough childhood...on top of my father passing away from leukemia when I was only eight, I was bullied in elementary and the first two years of middle school simply because I'm autistic. I know what it's like to be treated like a second-class citizen. We both got out and moved past toxic situations. But it is okay to take a step back in time and relive the good memories we have from our childhoods...the memories that we want to cherish rather than try to forget... because it is a special one of a kind experience. It's just something that words cannot describe. Whether it be a toy, a doll, or a special necklace...those things are the light in a dark place. Our comfort zone, and it is always okay to have one. Uncle Iroh from Avatar the Last Airbender said it best, "Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel. You can't always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving...you will come to a better place"
I’m so proud of you sharing your painful secret and turning it into something that brings excitement and peace to you. It shows others we can move forward. Those glow worms were so beautiful to see. Thank you for sharing.
Nikki and Jason, it's stories like yours that help so many others just like you know that they're not alone. It also makes you much more relatable as well.
Nikki you are one strong woman, you chose to rise above a very heartbreaking past. I am so glad that you have a partner that helps you instead of telling you to sweep it under the rug and forget about it. I wish you both nothing but peace and happiness❣️ Jason, just wanted to say I’m so happy you know how to do all that camera stuff! The glow worms were incredible!!
Nikki, I love when u share your story. From the moment I started watching yalls videos I could tell your story was deep. I know u don't like sharing all this but its so brave of you to open up
Nikki you demonstrate braveness that is astounding. Not only walking into a cavernous unknown, but your personal disclosures. Allowing us all to witness and vicariously participate is yet another demonstration. Jason, your love and support are equally incredible. What a tremendous light you both bring during our time! Continued blessings on your journeys. I thank you for all your work on videos that completely delight us all!
Nikki your journey to become the remarkable person you are today should serve as shining beacon of hope to others who have suffered similar childhood trauma. You are living proof that "where there is a will, there is a way". May God continue to bless you and Jason.
Amazing vlog for so many reasons. Beautiful, educational, emotional, adventurous. Thank you sharing your curiosity, your art, and your story. 💕 You are brave - for sharing your story and for staying in that water after seeing the eel!
I've been living here in New Zealand for a couple decades (I love New Zealand!) and never been to Waipu cave, really enjoyed your video. Also, it broke my heart to hear about your life as a 3 year old. But, you met the love of your life and have seen so much of the world, really happy for you both! I hope the boat repairs are coming along as well. :-)
This brings back wonderful memories for me. I went there in 2014. Did a tour from Auckland hostel. wonderful experience. Your history is very heart breaking. You have such a wonderful outward happy personality! It is truly inspiring to see you withstand all that trauma. You both have have been a foundation for each other. Love all your adventures.

Thanks for a awesome cave experience, I’m glad you worked so hard to capture the glow worms, it was magical. I had to dry my eyes after Nikki shared her past. I knew you guys were some of the most courageous people on the planet, but to overcome a past that might have destroyed a lot of people makes your journey very inspiring, thanks for sharing.
I am late to your channel but have really enjoyed playing ketch up with your sailing adventures. What has intrigued me is your spirit of discovery and willingness to explore your world and yourselves. I am in awe that two kids out of high school have carved out a life most people only dream of, and put yourselves out on the internet for the world to see. You make nice documentaries with beautiful visuals and excellent commentary. Your blend of sailing, sightseeing and personal challenges and discoveries is well balanced and entertaining. Thank you. The series for your anniversary was awesome and this short video was exhilarating and gut wrenching. I wanted to reach through the screen and give you a hug. I love that you are two relatively normal people doing something extraordinary.
Your story brought me to tears...tears of sadness as you spoke of your mothers desperation, and then happiness as you revealed how the stuffie glowworm helped protect and save you as life progressed. One would have never thought your early life had been so, so difficult. You clearly demonstrate the power of hope and imagination and the positive effect that kind of thinking endows. You are remarkable.
This might be the best episode so far … WOW. Incredible to see those glow worms .. and Nikki, you are so courageous and brave to share that super sad story with us - God Bless you, you are an amazing person. You deserve all the joy in the world, and so does Jason. So glad you found each other. ❤️

What an amazing adventure. How clever of the glow worms. My girls loved their glow worms. So glad you got to see them in person. Thank you so much for sharing both this cave and your past. Sending hugs and I hope you always have your bubbly personality. Isn't it amazing that God brought you and Jason together to go do what you do and help those who can't do that or go there heal.

Twenty years on and I still remember it vividly. Loved your videos and time lapse of the glow worms. This is one of your best adventures yet! So glad you’re out of lockdown!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I can't imagine how difficult it is to put it into words to one person, let alone all who have followed your adventures this far. You are both amazing people ❤ and I hope your continued journey is twice as amazing as it has been. And yep, as a fellow 80s kid, those glow worms are the bomb!

Amazing story telling, other worldly photography, emotion, realism, humor. This one had it all in 18 minutes (Ok, except sailing). What videographer, photographer, RUclipsr . . . The one stand out overall is your connection to humanity, this is what places you ahead of the big number chanels some that sold themselves out and took without Truley giving back under the guise of all the isms! Thank you Nicky for being so brave, no wonder Jason adores you..
As someone that has experienced trauma growing up, I appreciate when those with a platform share about their own. Thank you.
Couldn't agree more!
I love that after a traumatic childhood you’ve become such a happy and positive person, another reason for me to admire you.
Thankyou for sharing. Vulnerability is what makes the world a better place.
Well said!
So sweet. You guys are so lucky to have each other. What a strong woman you have become Nikki.
💙💛💙
My guess is that the song from LotR was a rip-off from something regional. They are, after all, in NZ.
Parts of it sounded like it might've been in Maori but it's hard to say for certain.
The woman was singing in Maori, I could only catch certain words (Kiwi here)
Thank you, NIkki, for your courage to share your story. You never know who will find courage in your story to share their own with someone who can help them process the trauma of childhood. This is what makes the Wynn’s story so compelling-your transparency, your struggles, your personalities and your victories. Thank you both so much for the great sharing of life you two are doing. It’s inspiring!
All I have to say is “Well done,” as that about covers it…for Nikki’s story and this marvelous video. Love y’all!
Angel your piece to camera was so moving perhaps that experience. Has made you wonderful person you are today it also helps that you look like a more beautiful version of Audrey Hepburn keep on being perfect. X .
T gt
Your courage to share speaks to the heart of how your lifestyle has transformed that little girl inside of you. Thank you.
Really happy you shared your story :) I appreciate you Nikki! You too Jason! I really enjoy you guys being a part of my Sunday mornings Thank you!
Nicki, we’re SO BLESSED you hit the publish button! Beautiful …
Something no child should go through. Thank you for being brave enough to share your story.
Peace. Your fan
Jason.
Amazingly brave sharing, Nikki. I hope we all honor your trust. The chant was incredible too, Jason.
OMG. The story, the beauty, the cold water, the "glo-worms", 10 hours. The editing was terrific. I really enjoyed this episode.
Love ‘n’ hugs Nikki.. you didn’t have to share that intimate and heartbreaking insight into your past, immense respect for your bravery in doing so xx
Except in Australia, each glowworm is guarded by a crocodile...
😜
I’m so proud of you sharing your painful secret and turning it into something that brings excitement and peace to you. It shows others we can move forward. Those glow worms were so beautiful to see. Thank you for sharing.
Nikki and Jason, it's stories like yours that help so many others just like you know that they're not alone. It also makes you much more relatable as well.
Living vicariously through you two. Keep the dream alive 👍🏼
Thank you for sharing, NIkki …. Jason, you are a master with a camera! Everything you both do comes to life via your skills.
You are brave - for sharing your story and for staying in that water after seeing the eel!
Thank you, Nicky, for trusting us with your vulnerability and your heart. You just bolster my belief that wherever, however we start, how we live, love and finish is up to us. Be blessed.
What a beautiful place to contemplate one’s existence. The young lady who shared her voice was amazing. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience!! Love and hugs from sunny Arizona 💖😎💖
The fact you can share this, shows tremendous strength of character, shows well in your life now.
Oh wow, Nikki!
We have more in common than I could’ve ever imagined. Thank you for sharing. You’re VERY brave. ❤️👊🏻👌🏻
That picture of you with your toy was powerfully emotional even before you told its powerfully emotional backstory.
Wow! That was beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. Thank you for sharing your story. You two are amazing.
The love Jason has for you is so pure and true and breathtaking
Thanks for sharing your story, I see how tough it must have been. Prayers for your continued success in life. Keep on adventuring
I'm a kiwi and never knew glowworms aren't worms. Awesome
This might be the best episode so far … WOW. Incredible to see those glow worms .. and Nikki, you are so courageous and brave to share that super sad story with us - God Bless you, you are an amazing person. You deserve all the joy in the world, and so does Jason. So glad you found each other. ❤️
Nikki, you're so brave and beautiful! You had me in tears when you shared that glimpse of your childhood. Thank you for sharing and being so vulnerable. 💜
Okay, I may have cried a little during this one. Thanks to Nikki for being brave enough to share her story. It's good for those of us who had traumatic childhoods to know that we weren't the only ones it happened to and to see that, with people who love you, you can recover. ❤
Nikki after watching you and the kindness you show everyone around you, I in my head, thought what a beautiful soul, and that you must have had a wonderful childhood. The fact that you are so humble and kind after all you have been through as a child, is a testament to your spirit. Your candor and openness is just one of the many reasons your fans love you and follow you.
What a start to life, thank you for sharing your inner most feelings.
You never know you telling us your child hood might help someone watching.
A beautiful place
Nikki it takes a lot of courage to talk about trauma I wanted to thank you for sharing the difficulties you went through as a child and the heartwarming story of how your little buddy the glow worm brought you so much comfort
This video touched me deeply. I feel by you sharing you have brought us closer into your family. Thank you my friend for being so vulnerable and open to share.
Such a heart wrenching experience about your childhood. Just shows that we can rise above bad parenting. Thanks for being vulnerable.
Well that was beautiful, I used to be a Lighthouse Keeper, so my "Glow-worm" was a tad bigger than those, but meant to protect. Love you two. PS. You made me cry.
Cool story. Would love more details of that.
@Peter Halil Thank you - I'll think of that every time I see one! 💙💛💙
Wow your childhood story is heartbreaking! So glad your dad got to raise you. I went to Waitomo but repelled down into a different section of these caves. It was amazing!
I am continuously blown away by the quality of content that is put out by so many RUclips creators. Watching this video today was a gift. This one is really next level. Amazing story telling, other worldly photography, emotion, realism, humor. This one had it all in 18 minutes (Ok, except sailing). What videographer, photographer, RUclipsr . . . Says to the themselves, “hey let’s go into the worst possible filming conditions to make a great video!”? Thank you both for putting so much energy into your work and sharing it with us.
I’m deeply moved by what you have shared in this video. Thank you. Great job with the photography, too.
Nikki, thank you for trusting us with your story. I can't imagine the pain you feel, but know first hand how negatively being abandoned can effect our live. Give that little girl a big hug from me! Love you guys!
As always …inspiring, courageous and generous Nikki, thank you for sharing. You guys are my dearest Sunday friends❣️
I just started watching y’all’s channel these past couple months. This one brought me to tears and Nikki didn’t even cry. I love you guys so much just for the content you put out here, and the enthusiastic starburst that is always Nikki. Thank you for sharing such a private series of emotions and story, Nikki, it takes such bravery (even more so than walking through murky water) and you did it! so proud!
Awesome video that re-enforces the fact that none of us know the life story of strangers and what they've been through.
The story we write is for us but others as well. When we offer it to others it is a gift…to inspire, encourage and heal. Some things find us, some we find…we choose forward. No doubt you are writing one amazing story is helping others write theirs as well…especially from within. ❤️
Wow... Nikki, you certainly have a way with words in expressing intimate details of yourself! Hearing you share your story on a deep personal level takes courage. I have been a fan for about 5 years, and feel like I know you. So inspiring. Never a disappointment in seeing your stories/adventures unfold each week! Thank you!
Nikki that was a sad story. But you made it to a wonderful woman today.
Awww Niki, look how brave you are! I am so thankful for you, your journey and your story. What a testimony you are to how love heals. May this bring healing to many others out there looking for a way out of the pain of abuse on so may levels. Love and blessings to you both!
I am so beyond proud of Nikki. You have really opened up in the past year. You are a survivor and you will reach so many people by sharing your story. Thank you for opening up to us. We love you. You and Jason are amazing story-tellers. I look forward to every video. Much love!
Wow. this was all amazing. Thank you.
Nikki, thank you for sharing your story. My heart goes out to you. I'm so glad were freed from that situation and your resilience enabled you survive and thrive. And now your light shines through. Much love.
I’m very glad that little girl survived and grew. We see her frequently in the awe and wonder with which you see the world.
You're so courageous, Nikki. Thank you so much for sharing your story with the world. Sharing our traumas are both healing for ourselves and healing for the world around us. Thank you for helping us heal, too. ❤
Wow Nikki thank you so much for being so vulnerable with us. Brene Brown has always put vulnerability best in my opinion: "Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity." I wish you all of that and more, and sharing it with this community only encourages love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy and creativity! Very cool for something to come full circle like this.
Thank you both for spending the extra time & effort to show the beautiful glow worms in the caves - a hidden treasure of God! Nikki, you have become the glow worm for so many people living in a very dark world. They are drawn to your beautiful Light that shines from inside you! Praying for God’s continued blessings & protection in all you (both) do in spreading His Light!
*“The light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it.” - Gospel of John 1:5 *
Diane B: 'Windwalker' shares your prayers and then some. Amen in all respects!
I look back on my childhood when I get stressed etc. Never would have thought I would be where I am today. I feel ya ma’am.
It’s been so special getting to know y’all better. You both have incredible stories that help so many. Brave, compassionate, real and turned your stories into a beautiful (sometimes challenging) adventure. So relatable. Keep shining!
It’s more than magical in the waipu caves , but the courage and honesty to say what you did that is real magic and very inspiring to all I hope
