In case you are into coding, having two screens also comes with the benefit that you could turn one by 90 degrees. Which is convenient to display more limes of code vertically. Or also in case you extensively use the command line.

@@sunset6958 I personally prefer a three screen setup with one screen turned by 90 degrees. For the reasons given my comment. Maybe it could also be a widescreen and a second turned one.
But finally for me it totally boils down to personal preference and what you use the screen for.
For video editing or if you use a daw for example I guess the wide screen might be the better solution.

I like my 21:9 for design with a second 16:9 (16:10 preferably) monitor for testing how it looks to most. I dont code too much, but I guess I could make it vertical for when I do, I never thought of that, tha ks for mentioning it.

To everyone, just be aware that if you move from Curve monitor to Flat monitor, you will face one issue. Edges of flat screen will feel away while the center would seem bulging. It will feel as convex lens. Really annoying. And might feel weird and have strange feelings looking at the monitor. If you plan to have curved at work and at home then it might be ok. but moving back and forth from curve to flat might cause eye strain and feel strange. I have 34 inch curved and I wish I could go back to flat. And at 34 inch size curve is not worth it. It might be useful when you go ultrawide >38 inch and above. Otherwise say away from curve. And curve is going to cost more than flat in most cases.

As an artist/coder/designer I would be lost without my dual 16:10 IPS screens. I can run Visual Studio on monitor1 and I can run Photoshop on monitor 2 with my Wacom A5 tablet mapped to monitor 2 as well. That means my tablet still matches the aspect ratio of a single monitor, which avoids inconsistent X, Y scaling.
When I used to mod games like GTAV, I would run the game and Visual Studio on monitor 1, leaving monitor 2 for browser, reference docs, 3DS Max or Photoshop... or a combination of those 4. I also use edge-snap a lot, so it's nice having 4 edges to snap things to. I started using dual-screens in the 90's and I'm happy to stay with that setup.
If my PC was a pure gaming machine, then I would probably have an ultrawide (or triple screen) but it has always been a development PC first and foremost.

I've been looking into ultrawides for about 2 yrs now. I've been using dual monitors for about 15yrs. The advent of curved ultrawides got me interested. But... I've been waiting on certain things to happen. 1) Gsync. I like it or freesync. But the physical unit drove costs up. Luckily Gsync on certain models no longer requires the unit to reap most of the benefits. 2) Better panel tech and improvement. We have got that over the years but I'm still waiting on some more innovation with things like OLED and for costs to drop. 3) Cost. I've had 0 issue with spending $500 to 800 on 1440p Gsync unit monitors but I'm not interested in paying much more than double for a single ultra wide especially with the added costs of the newer tech despite it no longer having the physical Gsync unit anymore. 4) Screen splitting. There are tons of software options now. And you can even run monitors as 2 separate ones with another cable if the monitor supports it. But it's a curved display. I'd want to be able (at least in a fair bit of games) to have the game playing in the center with 16:9 and have 2 smaller vertical ones flanking it. You can do this but I also want the ability to Fullscreen it. It seems like some software will be able to do this shortly. Funny thing is when all this stuff happens and I finally get an ultra (or super ultra) wide, I'll still probably end up using on of my current monitors as a true second monitor anyway.... I'm too used to it. But I'll probably just use it in portrait mode.

@@francocolomba nope, high-end PC CRT's will actually do these kind of resolutions and refresh rates and you can still find them for very cheap. Plus they have very deep blacks in the right conditions making them great for content consumption, with only a few exceptions (for exemple shows that are very dark, like batman movies, will be almost unwatchable because of CRT's relatively low dynamic range).
CRT's are basically oled, but take up more space and are more flexible in terms of resolution, refresh rate and latency (they can have badically no latency if your GPU supports pure analog VGA, most newer GPU don't support it or convert from DP to VGA, which adds latency.)

  • @SMGJohn

Problem with dual monitors in my experience is that they are nice if you got lots of shit running that you might want for references etc, like a word document open as you edit something in InDesign.
But you can already do this with ultrawide even in Windows Vista. If you are casual user, dual monitors are mostly used for having stuff like Steam chat, web browser or Discord open while you play your game on main monitor, but if your game does not support borderless which is A LOT of games out there, you basically have to minimise the game to change something in the browser or your discord, some games crashes when you minimise because they are just that poorly designed. And again if you run borderless mode, you sacrifice performance, for some people it could mean 5 fps which would mean you go from stable 30 fps to 25 which is no bueno.
Most ultrawides allow you to just crop the sides of the monitor if you go fullscreen in 16:9 mode in the game, there different scaling methods inside the monitor settings most of the time.
But really, dual monitor setup has quirks and ultra wide has quirks too but its just one monitor and its far more versatile than dual monitors, considering these days ultra wides are like 200 euros for a high refresh rate one, I am starting to think it just makes no sense going for dual monitor anymore because at the end of the day if you are going to do work, ultra wide gets the job done, but if you game and you run borderless you can still just lock your game to half the screen and have your discord on the other halve, so effectively you still have the same setup except its in one screen.

    • @dianneT

Maybe ultrawide would be better than dual setup if you can also easily share your screen (I meant specific split screen) for Zoom meetings without installing any softwares to do so. Let's consider those who have company-provided PC that you would like to connect to personal monitor. Even if you buy LG ultrawide with onscreen software, it would be useless with company provided computers since the IT would prohibit you from installing or uninstalling softwares which means you could only use windows snap. At least with dual monitors, multitasking and sharing one screen for presentation during meeting is easier.

I got my first ultrawide a year and a half ago and will never go back. Movies and games look gorgeous. More of an immersive feel. Mine has a slight curve, not the more hefty curve of the Odyssey. When I checked out a heavy curve (sorry don't know the official terms) I found it too annoying at the edges of the screen, slightly disorienting. Kept my old monitor to use as a second but don't think I've turned it on in over six months.
I play primarly newer games but now and then load an older game from my Steam library. So far they have all run fine. I don't play any fps games though.

Good idea! I am planning on a video comparing different monitor panels (IPS, TN & VA) where I will focus more on productivity. I think for productivity it depends on what that means for you. If you need to read a lot, the extra vertical resolution you can get from a 16:9 display is handy, whilst if you're editing videos or producing music you may appreciate the extra width with the ultra-wide.

Which means LOADS of screenspace, but also more space taken by monitors. But honestly that seems to be the best setup, because you can play on the 16:9 in games that are better fitted for it and still can simultaneously watch shows

My experience is if you're into gaming 2 x 1080p monitors might be the way go. Ultrawide 1440P requires a powerful/expensive GPU which I'm not prepared to buy. Lots of older games that I still like e.g. Crysis--don't do 1440p. I've tried 1080p gaming (NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650) on the ultrawide. The visible desktop bordering the 1080p gaming window makes for an ok but not as immersive as I'd like it to be gaming experience. But I bought an ultrawide for work reasons so, that's ok.

I will share one more opinion on this.. with dual monitor setup you can continue working on personal things on one monitor and only share the one which has your code or professional work running. The other is completely out of view.. and you are still sharing your entire monitor... I typically have one personal chrome profile and my whatsapp which sits on one monitor and my work google chrome profile open on another monitor and i make it a point to share entire screen with only the professional google chrome profile.
