I have found that I can get thru yearly moth prevention efforts more quickly with my large sweater collection by baking rather than freezing my sweaters. I put parchment down on cookie sheets and pile up several sweaters on each sheet. I bake at 90 C/195 F to 100C/212 F for 30 minutes. This should kill any eggs that are hiding. I set a timer and every half hour swap out for another batch. I never store my sweaters or yarn or fiber away during summer - I keep everything on fairly well lit open shelving all year and try to rummage around a lot on the shelves since moths don’t like light or movement. I do try to keep each sweater in a large size zip-loc. I feel superstitious about the moth traps- I know they work well and I have used them for pantry moths in the past, but I don’t want to tell the moths where my sweaters are🤫

For the yarn shop - in my community, a new yarn shop opened and the owner has really put forth an effort on creating a sense of community. There is a place as you walk in the store for knitters. There is always a folding chair brought out for someone coming in to knit. It is so welcoming regardless of what someone is purchasing. Andrea nailed it. Also have different price points and don’t necessarily stock every thing a customer comes in and asks for. You will get lots of you must stock this….be thoughtful of what you do stock.

I have to say, I've found several LYS that were so unwelcoming that I felt judged just walking thru the door when I was in my 20s. I had a low budget, I looked young... But I'm still knitting now at 50, my budget is now almost limitless, and I've almost never used my LYSs due to those experiences. I do wish I could find a local knitting community so I'll probably try again, I want to find a knit in! So put some cozy chairs around and get a coffee/tea station, and say a happy "welcome in!" to everyone!

I just opened a yarn shop! Biggest advice business-wise is to NETWORK. Connect with other shop owners and get advice, especially shops you admire. Do your research on demographics locally and connect with local business development centers (NYS has a free one SBDC and I wonder if other areas have them), get help running your five year projections and assumptions, building your business plan, and planning your starting stock. CUSTOMER SERVICE. Don’t open a yarn shop if you don’t like people or customer service. I get so peopled out, but I knew going into running a shop that I love retail and people. I’ve heard of shop owners who only opened a shop because they love yarn and knitting and realized they have no patience for people.
The highest compliments I have gotten are: what a wide range of stock I have and wide range of price points, how well stocked my store is, I have a small section of local pottery and jewelry/gifts, customer service-people first, everyone is welcomed warmly, social gatherings and classes are greatly appreciated.

I live between two LYSs, one that allows knitting with yarn purchased elsewhere and one that does not. I feel that the latter's decision is detrimental to their customer flow. I wasn't able to go there a few times because I happened to be working on a project without their yarn. Had I been in their space, surrounded by their beautiful yarn and samples, I likely would have planned my next project with their yarn. Now it has been over a year and the issue just continues to perpetuate, not because I don't like it there, but because the other store is where I am and where I'm inspired. Also, the store I frequent is open on Sundays. It is the only one I've ever found open on Sundays. They teach a lot of classes that day and there is a ton of traffic.

  • @michelledelehanty1600

Not a business owner but spend TONS of time and money in my two favorite, wonderful LYSs and as a knitter, spinner and enthusiastic yarn consumer who never passes up an opportunity to make more yarn purchases, I could not agree more with customer service. Yes that includes offering classes if you have space, yes stock for all budgets, and absolutely being inclusive, but being a part of the fiber community means supporting your customers and potential customers by not refusing things for instance like helping someone who comes in for help with a tricky spot in their pattern, or allowing the use of your ball winder and swift, or just a place to sit and knit with others, even if the yarn in these scenarios was not purchased at your store. If the shop is quiet and no one is taking up your time or equipment it costs you nothing to help your fellow knitters and you’re more than likely to score a sale that way and likely a repeat customer and good word of mouth to build your business. Particularly in vacation communities you never know when someone from out of town might need to wind a bit of yarn to knit while on their trip, and then also spend a bit of money. Knitting community service is customer service.

I will add - make sure the lighting is good! I went to an LYS a couple of years ago that was so dark I had trouble locating things. (For context: I’m not as young as I used to be.). Add to that the lack of service and I left empty-handed and never went back. Also - if someone is tending the shop for you, make sure you trust them to be kind and discreet AT ALL TIMES. Andrea is so right that we hear everything that is said. I used to go to a shop where one of the employees complained constantly about the owner! After a while, I crossed that place off my list. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

About the moths, I don't find the moth traps work at all. I have moths at home and I've tried using the traps in various spots and they didn't catch the moths. Also, I have cats so I don't think it's possible for me to get completely rid of the moths forever. They always find a spot where there's cat hair and dust. Once in a while, I'll throw my knits in the preheated oven for 30 minutes to make sure nothing stays on them. I think 120F or 130F will kill them all. From what I understand, it might be a better solution than the freezer (and it's quicker) BUT I use the freezer solution when I can't really put the item in the preheated oven (for example: a WIP with plastic stitch markers on it).

For the person thinking about opening a yarn store, aside from all the great advice given below, make sure you stock sweater quantities of yarn. There is an LYS near me that only has 2-3 skeins of individual yarns, so I don't shop there anymore. One other little tip, if you offer winding services, ask the customer if they plan to pull from the center or the outside. This same shop wound yarn for me and just assumed that I planned to pull from the outside and buried the center end. I had to re-wind at home as I prefer to pull from the center, or sometimes use both ends.

I put EVERYTHING in plastic bags after bring moths in with a new wool rug.. Moth Traps are cheap and a good reminder of what is out there. Whenever I bring home yarn from anyplace other than a reputable LYS it goes in a separate plastic bag and in my car for a week or two. If it is hot, that will cook any eggs. If it is below freezing, that will also kill. I keep it out there for 7-14 days depending on weather. When I bring the yarn bag inside I do not mix it with other yarns and I keep that in the bag until I inspect it next time I am looking through my stash.

MOTHS - I have found moths and larvae from time to time and my go to method that always works is to put items in a 150 degree oven for a half hour. It kills all stages of the moths. I actually do this now every year or so for anything that’s been out and unwashed. Haven’t had a problem again in several years! Also agree - keeping things in the light and moved around every so often helps, too.

What you said about local yarn shops is right on the money. We have two shops one really well stocked and not so welcoming. The other is a smaller shop, higher end products but super welcoming. I'll go there over the larger shop unless I have absolutely have to. The owner comes across like any extra minute helping you, is one minute too long. It's a shame.

You can kill the moths in the egg if you put it in the oven at like 120F (50C) even a little more if you want for 30-45 min. I put it at the minimum temp for my oven 175F (79C) on a baking sheet or in a lasagna plate. It doesn't damaging the wool, I let it cool and wash it after.

Yarn shop opinion: accessibility is important. While I am young I have kids. Most shops I have been to are not stroller accessible and I am shocked to see that. I know that the typical age is older so it's quite shocking as a wheel chair is bigger than a stroller most times. I know wanting all the things is big but it's overwhelming when it's just all piles of yarns, even without the accessibility issue.

Yes! I live close to San Diego. I love the look of one yarn store but their yarn prices are just a bit too high to buy more than 1-2 skeins. They are friendly enough but man the prices it’s hard. The other store I like to go to is well… a lot of yarn in smaller space. But I go there even though I’m a bit cluster phobic they are nice and yarn for any price point.

Your advice about yarn shops is very true of many businesses. I got to hear employees loudly gripe about colleagues, I've seen supervisors berate employees in front of customers. And yes I have been to stores who's owners had a Go away vibe but personally I can tolerate the latter to a point if the selection is good. So I agree that bad vibes hurt small businesses as much as poor selection.

We have lost our only shop in the area. While this is disappointing it was not the warm and fluffy shop , and was NOT that welcoming. Sometimes even feeling that my questions were so simple they were board even talking about my issue. Plus the yarn the shop sells also makes a HUGE difference! This was mostly a superwash shop. I hate superwash yarn, so there’s my bias. This is of course just my opinion and many folks love superwash yarn, so you do you. But I encourage everyone to try a knit in a non superwash yarn once in their knitting life! ClaudiaSJI

They even helped me rewrite a pattern from someone else's grandmother's knit that they had not finished. It was amazing ❤️ The other shop makes you feel like you are kind of a bother when you come in. And in order to participate in their groups. You have to have bought all your yarn and all your supplies from them. Which is a huge turn off. I'm much more likely to buy their yarn if I found community there.
