  • Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!

In this week’s episode we cover:
    1. Hi Andrea! I love tuning into your episode every week, you've taught me so many things and have inspired me to learn to spin! I really love your tessellated patterns and I plan to make the cardigan this fall. I'm not too well versed in mosaic knitting so I decided I would knit the Rad Plaid Cowl first to get a hang of the stitch pattern and see how my handspun will knit up! My question is, do you have any tips/tricks for keeping the three yarn balls from becoming a tangled mess. I'm only about an inch or two into the pattern so far and I feel like I'm spending just as much time untangling as I do knitting. I'm hoping that there's some sort of trick on how to arrange the balls when switching. Thanks!
    2. I started the Framed sweater in July and was apparently too excited to read the pattern notes carefully before casting on (I'm normally very careful!!!). I had suspected my ribbing wasn't right as soon as I started in on the color work but I checked and double checked the directions, and I knew my gauge was correct from my swatch so I figured this was the intended look. I'm now at the shoulder ribbing of the front yoke and sure enough, my hem ribbing is wrong! Somehow I confused the needle size for the body and the needle size for the ribbing and didn't realize it when I didn't even switch needle sizes between the two! So, now I am waaaay past the point of ripping back but I'm concerned the final sweater will just look silly and unbalanced with a ribbing knit in size 7! What are your thoughts? Should I finish the sweater and go back, put in a safety line at the knit row right before the yarn changes and the color work starts, rip out the hem and knit it correctly? I would never have been brave enough to consider this normally but I've learned a lot from you podcast and feel like maybe, just maybe I can pull this off with a little help. This is only my second sweater (DRK Everyday was #1) but I am a confident knitter, just new to garments. Would appreciate your help and I LOVE your designs! Thank you so very much!
    3. Hi Andrea - I’m wondering if you use 100% wool to knit for your kids. Do you have yarn suggestions for kids? If you’re using 100% wool for them is itchiness ever a problem? Thank you!
    4. I'm a new spinner and and hoping to make your Traveler Cowl my first ever hand spun knit project. I have my first useable yarn made in a Chevoit 2 ply and to my horror just learned that I might have spun my yarn the "wrong way" (S twist singles and Z twist yarn). I was told that Z twist yarns are for crochet while S twist yarns are for knitting and am terrified that I will untwist my yarn as I knit. Is this true? Could I switch my style of knitting to save my project (go from picking to throwing or throwing to picking)? Should I chalk this all up to experience and for future spinning do Z twist singles and S twist plying? Maybe I'm making too big a deal out of this. Have you noticed a difference between Z twist and S twist yarns in your designing/knitting?
5 . Hi Andrea, I am an experienced knitter but a new spinner. I’m familiar with substituting one commercial yarn for another (matching fibre content, gauge, etc), but nervous to substitute commercial yarn with my own handspun. Do you have any tips? As a newer spinner, my yarn is still thicker/thinner in many places. Do you have advice for what to look for in a pattern that would make it more forgiving of handspun irregularities? My eventual goal is to spin and knit a sweater. Thank you so much!

About knitting for kids. I found the first sweater I knit for my grandson was knit from acrylic and it was too warm to wear. I found superwash a much better choice and they kept them on all day. Plus they were easy care.

I have been knitting for my kids since they were newborn. We spend a lot of time in northern Sweden (= very cold winters) so they definitely need wool as a first layer next to skin. I mostly use Knitting for Olive merino and it has worked wonders for both my girls! 😊 Don't really bother with superwash and all that, only make sure to go merino! And also, have used Cascade 220 for sweaters for them and they have never complained or seemed to be itchy 😊

I recommend Rowan Summerlite DK for kids sweaters, especially if your kid is always too warm!

For your kids I'd try a Ruby & Roses superwash, new DK base is supposed to be super soft. Great colors.

As I have super sensitive skin and thought I was allergic to wool before discovering fine Merino, I would never knit anything for my kids with scratchy or traditional wool. When they were little I knit their stuff with Zara but with a much smaller needle size in order to prevent pilling. Their hats survived an accidental trip through the washer and dryer courtesy of my husband.

I love woolly wool and hand dyed super wash for my garments, but I chose Berroco Vintage, a wool/ acrylic blend for matching sweaters for my three grandsons (infant, 4, and 7). They are very comfortable and can be machine washed, so I know they will be worn and cared for easily.

If I’m knitting a sweater for one of my kids, I always use a superwash. It’s just easier for all of us.

Hi Andrea! About the side of plying wool, I would say that for a mirror left-handed knitter like me, I would spin the wool the opposite site of a right-handed knitter. Because I always do the opposite side of right-handed and I never had problems.

Yarn management is part of knitting, just like frogging or swatching. That being said, the tessellated vest is one of my FAVOURITE patterns. I've knit two!😍

Working with Lettlopi cured my fear of my hand-spun being too thick and thin. Lettlopi is pretty noticeably thick and thin but it still knits up beautifully.

Z and S twist depend on the way the yarn is wrapped differently on the needle/hook. I knit eastern with the loops at the opposite orientation on the needles, and I do notice S plied yarns loose twist a tiny bit. normal knitting adds a slight bit of twist. For crochet, you wrap the yarn on the hook opposite from knitting (same as eastern), so S will loose a little twist, and Z tightens up a bit. I also notice with single ply like noro, normal knitting would untwist a bit and the eastern way I knit adds extra twist. Not sure if this makes sense, but since I learned to spin and about the Z/S twist, it answered this mystery for me :)

I recently made the rad plaid cowl and kept the suri strand inside the tube of the cowl while not using it which helped it not to tangle with the other strands.

I have found that I cannot wear any remotely itchy yarns. (I have a few sweaters that never get any wear!) My favorite soft yarn at the moment is Malabrigo Rios. It's really soft.

For the person asking about the Framed sweater bottom ribbing, Marlene, of Marlene knits just reknit her body ribbing just as you described by ripping it out, she talks about it on her latest podcast (she's marleneknits here). She also talks about it on her Ravelry project page.

For Kids I use superwash fiber : Drops baby merimo (sport) ,Drops Merino Extra Fine (DK) or Drops big merino(Aran) beware since they are superwask, they have a tendency to grow.

When I started spinning I just twisted on one way (ended up being counter clockwise), so I have just continued that. I spin counter then I ply clockwise and I have only knit my handspun and haven't had any issues (I have a right had lever knitter, if that might also make a difference).

I use a lot of wool/acrylic combo yarns for baby or kid knits. Even my adult daughter has at least one wool/acrylic sweater knit by me when she was a teen. ❤

Could elastic be added to the bottom ribbing to help with getting a tighter hem? Just a thought.
