  • On the night of February 17th, 1864, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley levees Charleston harbor and sinks the Union sloop USS Housatonic, making it the first submarine in history to successfully sink an enemy ship. Despite the success, the Hunley never returned to bass, and did end the lives of 21 Confederate men as compared to 5 Union men in the time of it's short lived commission. The Hunley would remain missing for 131 years, before, in 1995, is was found and excavated. It is now on display at the Friends of The Hunley Museum in Charleston SC.
