Just what I needed to make my decision. CMP Special Grade M1 Garand: M1 Garand Springfield Armory receiver. This is a completely refurbished rifle consisting of an original M1 Garand Springfield receiver, new production Criterion barrel, new production American Walnut stock and handguards, and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. Thanks so much.
As a avid ww2 history buff, I had to have one of these rifles. December 1943 rifle in my collection from CMP. Has a new CMP stock on it, but I just purchased a USGI ww2 stock online. Excited to have it all back to full ww2 parts.
My dad carried an M1 in WW2. I have his PPK with the German markings on it. My mother told me the true story of how he took it off of a German lieutenant he was forced to kill in battle. He never told me the story - said it was "war surplus." I purchased several of these at Anniston CMP last week. They are super helpful and great people. Of course with COVID we had to go in in 6 at a time groups. Sure hope this operation doesn't get closed down in the spirit of "gun control." Its a great way to get a real piece of history into the hands of enthusiasts.
They still got some. Placed my order last week. It’s difficult to purchase in California, add $100 for FFL dealer and $35 for CA test. But, it’s all attitude, if there is a way you do it. I got a DD-214 so it helps. Now about that ammo.......
We never gave the Russians M1 Garands, the Russians had the AVS 36, AVT 40, SVT 38 and the SVT 40 by the start of WW2. We did lend lease Thompson Submachine guns, Colt M1911s and maybe some M1 Carbines. Total production of the M91/30 was around 17 million, not counting other models.
Surplus guns are usually more expensive in the country they came from. For instance, Americans want the M1 Garand, Germans want the Kar98k, Russians the Mosin-Nagant. It has to do with patriotism and nationalism. Even though I love the Kar98k, and like the Mosin-Nagant, nothing beats a Garand, except for the 1903 Springfield, which is a work of art.
+Fuzzy Ferguson It also has to do with the safety regulations in those countries. In most foreign counties, suplus forearms cannot be sold, unless they are properly inspected and proofed. This does have an upside for those shooters. For instance, Canadian .303 & European 8mm Mauser ammo is loaded to pressure levels that give performance similar to that of our 30-06, but U.S. makers download them, so they'll be safe in imports of questionable quality.
@John Nicodemus 100% correct. The 03 springfield is nothing but a fancy 93 mauser. German 98 mausers are way better, that thing is overrated. People want it to be the best thing because its american-made, but it really isnt.
I was thinking of stopping by cmp ill be in the area in about a month. Does anyone know all the extra stuff he was talking about for purchasing a rifle from them. I have a ccp in Alabama buy I'm not a member of any clubs. And what was that about a notarized letter. Is it not like other stores with just the background check?
My friend got me drunk on Jack Daniels. I stumbled all over the place and found my rifle. It was made out of Oak JD barrels. I knew it was the one on the spot. I love it to this day. No kidding true story.
LOL,the crate at 5.47 says "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΣ ΣΤΡΑΤΟΣ ΥΠΗΡΕΣΙΑΚΟ ΤΥΦΕΚΙΟ" which means Greek army service rifles, we had such a huge surplus of ammunition for that rifle,we where using them for target practice until the 90's,its an awesome rifle, i was always getting 8 out of 8 with very decent grouping. I find weird however that you can get a mosin nagant for 100$ and that rifle costs 500!.
Well the SMLE is no slouch, the only one I have seen was in bad shape but I was very impressed with the smoothness of the action, and they hold 10 rounds. Take care. DAVE
@bsrman36 Some of the rifles are not disassembled and sent through the untrasonic cleaner. rifles with low serial numbers, collectors, correct rifles are set aside. There has been some discussion of not running the stocks through the cleaner. One thing we need to understand is that all rifles are checked by the CMP staff and test fired for function.
I believe you can get a Field Grade CMP Garand for around $450. I'm probably going to get a CMP Special Grade for around $900. I'm also building a classic A2 type AR-15 for around $750. If you're looking for guns on the cheap, you could always get a really nice 22, a Mosin for about $100, hunting rifles & shotguns for around $300, etc. Just look around. Remember, guns are one of those things that hold their value, so you could always sell or trade them later to upgrade when you're ready.
The M1 Garand's are becoming a collectors rifle therefore they are in short supply . Even though there are millions sitting in warehouses in South Korea none are being allowed into the country "thank Barack Obama" which is also driving the cost up. There are also 770,000 M1 Carbines in South Korea also banned by Barack because the 15 round .30 cal. carbine magazine makes them high capacity assault weapons. I.e. Cost versus demand $1.000 is becoming a bargain. I have a feeling in 5 years a field grade M1 Garand is going to cost $3.000 or more.
I do not think so. It is just a roll of dice what you get. Just received mine yesterday with a SA receiver Ser# 825XXX. Heck that would make it a 1942 one????
I just got a M1 Garand Special Grade in 308 just this week so they are still available you just have to watch close and act quick. It makes my second M1 Garand from the CMP the other one an International Harvester I got back in 1990 and it was never issued with paper wrapping still over the sights. I also got a never issued 1903 Springfield it looks like it was just made. A true early Springfield manufacturer also not an A3 or with the weak forgings that are prone to blow up. I kind of regret buying the latter two because they're both un issued un fired so it would be foolish for me to shoot them so I'm stuck with just owning and collecting and not shooting and enjoying. So if you read down this far I'll say one more thing I unfortunately have no Descendants the past my valuable collection down to and I'm afraid one day when I'm gone they will just send up in a pawn shop bought by some jackass who doesn't know what they have and just trashed. Maybe I should just donate them to the NRA before I check out of here.
If you cant see the rifle yourself in person, opt out of getting it from CMP. With M1s, just suck it up and get a $1K M1 with a good barrel, brand new stock and a custom trigger, you wont regret it. You also cant get any 1903s (other than A3s) from the CMP these days either...so just keep combing through the auction sites. I do appreciate CMP's effort in the vintage rifle and pistol field, seeing as how AR15s are taking over the match scenes more and more.
you realize rusiians used m1 garands right also my mosin is a 1928 dragoon which is about the same quality as 1936 made kar 98 and also the m 1 garand had 6.25 million built thats only a million short of the mosin nagant production the reason their so high in price is because they are all being held by either the government or collectors and slowly being trickled out to the public
I hope they don't forget all the firearms loaned to Korea, they want to return them but Obama refused. Now that we have a President we should bring them home and donate to the CMP.
Korea wanted us to buy them back after they paid for them years ago (they are the only country that actually paid for the rifles). The rifles were in very poor condition and many parts had been replaced with Chinese made parts. They have since been imported through a third party and import Mark's were made on the rifles.
@mayohater2 dont make fun my my 1928 ex dragoon mosin XD and ps love my freinds garand i just cant get a garand for a good price *sigh* one of the most produce rifles of ww2 but yet i cant get on for under a grand
Great video , i just love how these politicians forget the taxpayers paid for all these fine rifles already , now the the middleman get`s to jack the taxpayer again ? come on dudes , i paid $ 150.00 for one in 1990
Two things I love , CMP and AMERICAN RIFLEMAN !
Good Bless The CMP, I got mine 2018 of November and my new to me was a 43 of November. Just like my dad's ole rifle.
Great presentation to the CMP program, as well as how the rifles are built.
Just what I needed to make my decision.

The South Store has shrunk quite a bit. It's only one rack now. I wish I had gotten into the hobby back in 2011.
As a avid ww2 history buff, I had to have one of these rifles. December 1943 rifle in my collection from CMP. Has a new CMP stock on it, but I just purchased a USGI ww2 stock online. Excited to have it all back to full ww2 parts.

My first year in Nam (1964 Seabee tech team) I was issued an M1.
Second year (65) I was issued an M14 with selector switch. I really missed the M1.
They still got some. Placed my order last week. It’s difficult to purchase in California, add $100 for FFL dealer and $35 for CA test. But, it’s all attitude, if there is a way you do it. I got a DD-214 so it helps. Now about that ammo.......
Well said.
I have one of these. You are correct it will shoot a foot high a a 100 yrds with hunting amo, but it is right on the mark with silver tip amo

when it's your first time holding a grand
(Watch his left hands thumb)
I think you can get parts, receivers are a different story, that is where the serial number is, that means paper work. Jest look at their web sight
Remington and New England Westinghouse produced Mosin Nagant model 1891s for Russia during WWII
you got that right
We never gave the Russians M1 Garands, the Russians had the AVS 36, AVT 40, SVT 38 and the SVT 40 by the start of WW2. We did lend lease Thompson Submachine guns, Colt M1911s and maybe some M1 Carbines. Total production of the M91/30 was around 17 million, not counting other models.

Im American and I absolutely love my Enfield No4. Although its Savage manufacture, so technically its American. haha

are there any CMP programs in Oregon??????????????????
@50TNCSA, Because an M1 is a shit ton better than any mosin nagant? Mauser 98's are fine guns, though.

it still out of my price range :( all i can afford is smle ,mosins and mausers
Just got my tracking number
You can get a grand from the CMP for lots under 1000$ look at their web sight. I think they start at 595 cant remember.
damn they have gone up
Well the SMLE is no slouch, the only one I have seen was in bad shape but I was very impressed with the smoothness of the action, and they hold 10 rounds. Take care. DAVE
Nice rifles but over a grand in my area hell no I got a mosin and a ar for the sam price as a garand
@bsrman36

I remember when they used to go for 300$ dollars but 1000$is overpriced

i hope trump allow m1 garand back to the US
Agree 100%
@Jose Guzman,,,, I remember when gas was 20 cents a gallon. Now gas is over $2.00 a gallon that would make $300 Garand worth $3000
Bought my first M1 for $180. Took 2 full years to the day to get. Worth the wait. It was an "as new" Winchester! Shot like a dream.
I do not think so. It is just a roll of dice what you get. Just received
mine yesterday with a SA receiver Ser# 825XXX.

greek army boxes with garands and bars

I'll take em and give them a good home
@50TNCSA because the M1 Garand is better then any bolt action rifle and is the cadillac of semi-auto rifles from its era.....
If you cant see the rifle yourself in person, opt out of getting it from CMP.

If you have a C&R can you purchase a M1Garand ?
Yes but most states you don't need the C and R .
